I was reading an article about how street cleaners in Rome were arrested for taking coins out of a fountain. The article said that the money is cleaned out of the fountain every day and half is given to a charity in Rome (where does the other half go?). Anyway, the charity is named Caritas which is (I believe) the same name as Lorne's karaoke bar in Angel. I looked on the official Caritas website and their mission statement is about helping people, regardless of race, gender, ethnic background etc. Does anyone know if this is why the name was chosen for the karaoke bar? In the show, Caritas was a place where "beings" (demon or otherwise), could go and feel safe and protected.

Caritas is Latin for mercy (according to AtS). I'm not sure how Lorne would know that. Maybe they speak Latin in Pylea.

Latin is a kind of cult language, people like to use it. I guess it sounds better than English, in some cases. Not to mention the connection it has to Buffy/Angelverse- it's practically universal for spells and ancient lore. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a coincidence, but if there's a common factor behind Lorne's pub, maybe there are writers knows someone in Caritas personally. Insignificant details.

Oh, I hate to see people disappointed. Here goes:

Well, I tried.

Dang, I was hoping to get a stirring rendition of A-Ha's "Take On Me"... ;)

I think Caritas was named completely intentionally, and with full knowledge of what the name meant. It's a place where all are welcome and no weapons or fights are allowed. In a world full of demons and evil, "Mercy" sounds like a good name in any language.

There's a local (Austin) hospice/homeless shelter/charity house here named Caritas, too. No drinks or karaoke, though... although that could make it much more fun!

Grrrrr. Arrrgghh.

I usually only break out the '80s tunes on Fridays after a couple of Long Island Iced Teas.

Good thing I had that margarita first.

I loved the Karakoe bar in Angel, Karaoke made me cringe till I made a friend who happened to be a kj. Now I actually do it and make other people cringe. Angel singing Mandy is right up there with Angel and Wes dancing at the party in season 1 for me in terms of Angel as the sweetest geek in the world. Could they have picked a scarier song for him to -like- (not just sing, but actually like) than Mandy? It showed me a whole other universe of information about Angel, which I think makes a fascinating contrast with shots of him reading Camus, and some of my favorite Jossfolk lines for Angel...the thoughts are there, but like the mirror they cast no reflection in you...(if I remember that right) and "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do." I mean, he thinks like this, and then he -likes-Mandy??!!?? These 2 factors in his personality (complex philosophical thought, contrasted with a liking for a song of epic maudliness) make an even more interesting triangle of polar qualities in his personality (in my view) with the insecure vanity of Angel worrying about how he looks.

I'm crazy about Loren the cynical but sweet alcoholic every(green)man with really scary clothes. Wash. I'm always a sucker for the Wash character. Well, I'm a sucker for all the Joss characters, so there goes my cred on that one. I was disappointed when they killed off Doyle, and always expected that Loren might go bye-bye too. (I'm only starting season 5 this week, so don't tell me.) So sometimes I feel myself holding back from Loren because I'm afraid to lose him. Joss, Jane, you b*****d! That never works for long either, I always get sucked in, then find myself thinking, go ahead, kill him now, see if I care, and then cringing at that thought. I have a really bad feeling about season 5 in regard to my folk being kill't off.

Thanks to viral marketing...SERENITY: reopening soon in a theater near you.

I just started watching season 1. I was so disappointed that they killed Doyle off. He was great. But then they had Angel dancing, and I laughed so hard I almost split a gut. It was so funny. Damn Joss reeled me back in.

Woops! Sorry about that oh queen, my queen! Good thing for my conscience that I didn't write any wretched spoilers, except the thing about our buddy Doyle, which you already knew. I figure I'm the last one in the world who hasn't seen Angel, but I'd better be careful cause that isn't so, especially with so many new to Joss peeps here.

Wesley dancing too! Oh so very bad. Then more dancing in the credits. I had to rewind and watch the dancing twice so I could laugh more. Wesley stuffing himself and his pockets with food at the party. I love it that the writers have almost every one of the characters in the 'verse just -stuff- some food item into their mouth.

No worries, Lim - I wouldn't get all mad if you spoiled it for me. Yeah, I don't even have any of the Angel seasons. I had to borrow this set from a friend. It's great so far. I didn't think it would be so funny.

GORRAMREAVERS

I dont remember exactly how it went but Lorne and Angel:

Angel: so your bar is named Caritas...

Lorne: You know what it means?

Angel: It means mercy.

Lorne: Oooh. Cute and smart.

So yes, Lorne did know what it meant.

"..it is my very favorite gun."
