I love Angel as much as the next person, I mean it was a great show BUT I think (personally) that the last season rocked due to the introduction of Spike.

I am even starting to think that Spike is actually a better character and not just that but better looking

I too think that Spike is an excelent character but the reason that season 5 was so great was because Spike and Angel played so well off of eachother.

Spike, definatly. And you MUST see Season 5 and enough w/ the excuses. It's some of Joss's best stuff ever.

Spike, absolutely. Who else could get away with calling Angel "Captain Forehead", or remarking that Angel had to get "some more of that nancy hair-gel"? :)

I didn't really care for Angel as a character at all, UNTIL I started watching Angel (the show). Then I started to appreciate him, but Spike still got much better, much funnier lines 9 times out of 10. Sure, if you were in a dark alley cornered by big-bads you'd want Angel to have your back, but at least with Spike at your side you'd have a chance to die laughing...

Hands down, Spike. While Angel has some amusing moments (imagining himself dancing, for example), Spike is just waaaayyy funnier. Not to mention hot.

OK I have to go against what seems to be the grain here. I'm always gonna vote for angel. Not to say that Spike isn't a great character, deep and hi-larious. "...and now I'm just a bigfluffy puppy." Spike makes me laugh hi=-sterically, However, I'm a sucker for the tortured soul thing. That inward turmoil and self doubt always drew me to Angel's character. Joss himself said that we identify with all the characters pain and that's why Buffy was always in pain. So I'll give Spike his due, but when it comes down to the two, I'm gonna cast my vote for Angel.

Angel angst is so well written and acted, "If nothing we do matters..." and the imaginary dancing (!)

But Spike stole my heart forever when he fell out the the car drunk in "Lover's Walk".

Whilst I enjoyed Spike on ‘Buffy’ (par the final season when I think that he was just too prominent and the writing of the character seemed, at times to be all over the place), I was pretty pissed about him transferring over the ‘Angel’ at the beginning of Season 5.

Putting it simply, it was because of the character’s popularity – which, I don’t think, it necessarily right. As an ‘Angel’ fan primarily (a ‘Buffy’ fan secondarily) I felt that the WB (who demanded that Spike come over – as well as slashing the show’s budget) were tainting my show. Furthermore, I worried greatly about the effect this would have on the screentime of the other characters on the show. As I comment before, the seventh season of ‘Buffy’ could have been renamed ‘The Buffy and Spike show’; and I didn’t want that to happen to ‘Angel’. I particularly feared for the screentime of Alexis.

Having said that, whilst it may not have been for the right reasons, it worked. Joss and co made it work. Spike came in he brought something new to the show. James had a great chemistry with David and his presence brought this new dynamic to the show. Also it created one of the best character arcs of the show’s history – Angel’s lose of faith in the Shanshu Prophecy and himself.

I do, however, feel that the sheer quality of Season Five (also my favourite of the series’ run) cannot simply be laid at James’ feet, though it was certainly a factor. The writing that season was just tighter, Alexis and Amy were phenomenal and I think the show benefited from the more attention that Joss was able to provide. And the finale was just…. Amazing is not the word.

I seen so much death... I been on fields carpeted with bodies, friends and enemies - i seen men and women blown apart to messes no further from me to you. But every single ones of those people died on their feet. Fighting. Or, hell, running away - doing summat to get through...

Spike, definitely Spike

but I did like Angel more when he was with Spike
they were definitely a good duo (or rivalry)

Joss said that he was always pairing Angel off with little blondes
and in Spike he had finally found the perfect ingenue for Angel

Angel was...boring. Just plain boring. Get over the whole "tortured" thing already! Spike was interesting from the moment he walked on screen in School Hard, and Angel boring from WttHM on. Angelus was a great character. The quote that always springs to mind is, "It seems that in losing his soul, Angel has regained his sense of whimsy." We sometime get Angelus-like moments from Angel, and that, to me, is one of the few redeeming features of the character. That and the amusing Spike-Angel interactions. Spike was the sort of person who spreads enthusiasm, much as Willow or Fred did. This to me is the ultimate measure by which a person is determined likeable. There is almost nothing Spike takes too seriously, which I consider to be a virtue.

And I would say Spike had more "depth" to him than Angel. Spike could be both pathetic and heroic, scary and comforting, bad and good. His character actually evolved. Was the Angel of AtS season 5 really different than the Angel of BtVS season 2? If the differences are there, they are quite subtle, compared to how much every other character on both shows changed.

Also? Spike is just that much hotter, with that tasty faux-british accent. I can't deny that that influences me in my choice.

As a side note- I'm watching Season 5 (having never seen 2-4) and I don't understand exactly what Angel does at W&H. In Angel Investigations, he clearly had the central role as tracker and fighter, but at W&H? Gunn does all the managerial stuff. Does Angel do anything but sign papers and occasionally dismember clients? The question's been eating at me all day.

Angel is CEO and President of Wolfram & Hart, Los Angeles. This means that he is ultimately in charge, the final arbiter of anything Gunn or Wes or whomever comes up with. Gunn is their legal expert, so he’s the one who deals with most of the technical issues and the speaking of the legalese. But Angel is the overall manager of things.

Which is not to say that he’s necessarily a good one. He’s not fond of just sitting behind a desk while everyone else does fieldwork. And because a large institution like Wolfram & Hart largely runs itself, he doesn’t necessarily have much of import to do even at his desk. I guess his most important role as far as the W&H system goes is simply to be there. Don’t know how far into Season 5 you’ve gotten, so I can’t really expand much on what else Angel gets up to while he’s there. But essentially, he has a vast amount of power at his disposal but is immensely frustrated by it because he can’t exercise that power except by proxy. That is, he’d rather go out and do things rather than tell people to do them.

So I guess, in the end, your question is the same one Angel is asking himself. Anyway, keep watching and hopefully all will become clear. I hope you enjoy the rest of the season, it’s my personal favorite.

During the filming of this "Oh My GODDESS!" s5, DB had to go through some rough knee surgery... it must of been fun for them -working that in before realising that as CEO, Angel could just sit around quite a lot and do that ever boring brooding... Which as it happens without giving the story away- (have you finished watching it yet?) He didn't have that much time to brood because of Blondie Bear. Yey!

I love Blondie Bear, he fought so hard to get that soul... well a few days in desert with a couple of demons...

Also- watch season 3-AtS a favourite with some very good eps for all characters. Waiting In The Wings. 'Nuff said.

Angel. I hope I don't get killed for this, but I thought season 5 was the weakest season of Angel. Not to say it was bad, by any means, I just enjoyed the first four much more for some reason.

Still, the finale was pretty awesome.

Now, now, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I personally have no control over my complusion for the tortured thing, no need to get tetchy. I am overwhelmed by Spike lover's here, but I don't dis on him, I give him his props as he thusly deserves. I think Angel's a lot deeper character than you're giving him credit for. I definately reccomend watching all the seasons of Angel before you make a final choice.

You aren't totally alone Gypsy, I will add my voice to our small but happy crowd.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Spike as much as the next non-blind girl with some semblance of humor but… and I may be b*tch slapped for saying this... I personally felt that the Spike that had me in stitches in the early seasons of Buffy got transformed so dramatically that I couldn't continue to watch him in the same way.

That said, I am one of the sad cases without a channel that has screened season five. He may have gone back to being good ol' Will the bloody that I loved to slightly hate.

However, my vote could not and would not change.

Sure, Angel's dark and brooding side is a permanent fixture. But that's his character. Tall dark mystery man with a dark past that he can't forget. Spike is his antithesis bar their shared past.

Guess I'm a sucker for the tortured soul. Plus, you know, the looks. I love Spike but Angel has always been my favourite.

I adore both characters pretty much equally, I guess. They're both intriguing, decent (at the end of the day) and incredibly sexy. If I were Buffy, I'd have trouble choosing, too!

However, in real life, I'm more of a Joe Normal kind of girl. I'm more into the nice, stable men, like Xander, Riley and Wes.

I think they're both awesome characters, one's not better than the other. And as several people have said allready I'm sure, the reason the introduction of Spike was so great in season 5 is because david and james work so great with eachother, and whenever Spike and Angel get into an argument, hilarity ensues. Not a big fan of Season 5 personally. And not particualrly a big fan of Spike once he was passed Buffy season 4.

He just hung around like a bad smell, and he'd be put into the most ridiculous of places!

I mean he left sunnydale, then came back, left for LA and then came back, then left once more and went to LA again!

James Marsters is clearly a wonderful actor but the tenuous links they'd employ to keep him around was detrimental to the overall plot. And Angel season 5 suffered through too many faces from the past coming back to make light threats and be beaten.

That said one of the funniest episodes EVER is the one where Angel and Spike go to Italy!!! Absolutely fantastic!!! Trouble is that felt like an entirely different show altogether :(

So to answer the question (sorry) Angel.

Hey Chris

Well it had to happen I guess.

Thing is I don't dislike Spike, but he was at his best when paired with Drusilla in Season 2 of Buffy.

Still it's just like me to choose the one character to be annoyed by and have him show up for the longest stint in a Joss show!

Angel. It's got to be Angel.

Spike is funny. Spike is ridiculous. Spike has no moral compass, even when he has a soul. He's superficial...although very upfront about it.

Select to view spoiler:

When Spike comes back, one of the first things he tries to do is to leave and find Buffy. Whe he is finally corporealized (is that a word...and if so, did I spell is correctly? ) he wants to go get her.

Spike doesn't care about anyone but himself (and indirectly Buffy, but only because he wants her. Angel wants Buffy as well...probably more so..and yet he knows that it isn't right for them to be together. Spike is more fun because he's a child. Angel is more adult in his decisions and therefore less likeable. Not that Angel is always right, but just more responsible. Angel knows that he will never atone for his wrongs. Spike doesn't much care.

And on a purely superficial note: Angel may wear lifts, but he's like 5" taller than Spike, who is only a smidge taller than Buffy (SMG is 5'2"?). I like my men to be at least a tad taller than me.

I'm not a big fan of Angel so much as I think Angelus is a riot. I really liked his brief return in season 4 when he's dealing with the "voice," his trip back into Angel's memory with Faith ("you saved a puppy!"), and his sudden but inevitable betrayal. Then again I'm a fan of big bads who enjoy their work (like the Mayor).

But I like Spike too. He's always been a great antagonist, but developed some real depth during the run of both shows. All right...the near rape thing with Buffy kinda left me with a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of his run on the show, but I really liked him on Angel. The episode where the hell dimension keeps trying to suck him down kinda stuck with me. And of course Spike's banter with Xander, Giles, and Angel is almost always gold.

Uh-oh, I think I might be starting off on the wrong foot on this forum.

But to hell with being liked.

Select to view spoiler:

Spike CHOSE to get his soul back so he could get Buffy.

Nothing noble in that, IMO. He didn't do it to atone. He didn't do it because it was the right thing to do or he could. He did it to get the girl.

Select to view spoiler:

Because after trying to RAPE Buffy, he felt guilty and knew the only way he could ever, possibly get near her again was if he had a soul.

Angel's soul was imposed on him...but he did much better with it than Spike. Angel actually owned up to the guilt of his past and knew the only thing he could do, not to clean the slate, but to live with himself, was to play the hero. He knew he couldn't atone, but strived to be good. Spike just shrugged his shoulders about the past and lived his life as if it didn't happen.

So, someone tell me...how weary should I be of posting spoilers? It seems there are quite a few browncoats just starting to watch BtVS or Angel. I would hate to spoil it for them.

Rugbug: No worries on my part. Don't worry about being liked or not - you bring up good points. And that ain't nothin', as Mal would say.

Yeah, Spike did it to get the girl, but people have done much worse things in the name of love. And you're right - he DID just kind of shrug his shoulders and go on as if the past had never happened, but that's just so... SPIKE! He does that about pretty much everything. It's part of what's so endearing in him as a character - but it's something that's annoying as hell in real life! :)

And you're right about Angel, too - he DID to a much better job with the care and feeding of his soul. He has grand plans, and follows them through; Spike *tries* to plan things, but then gets impatient and just jumps in, to hell with the consequences. Guess it shows that Angel has actually matured in his 240-odd years, where Spike is still an adolescent, at least developmentally.

That's what I love about these conversations; I have my ideas about things, and others bring in their own ideas. And hopefully we all get to think about things from different viewpoints and see things we might not have noticed before.

SOULQUAKE

If I had to pick one, it'd be Spike. *But*, I think they both work best together :D

Spike: Do you want me to give her a message?
Angel: Yeah, tell her you're an idiot.

Heh.

Point to consider:
Who was more evil without a soul?

Spike was at heart, a broken, love-sick boy.
Angel started out as a d**k. Becoming a vampire just made him worse, IMHO.

Very true. And if they are both evil, I prefer Angelus. He was wicked. Spike never really seemed that evil. His relationship with Dru was twisted (although not as twisted as Angelus') but as the big bad, his plans were just dumb. Angelus was psychologically terrifying. Spike? Not so much. I'd much rather have Spike be my enemy than Angelus.

Some of my favorite episodes of both BtVS and Angel are when Angelus is present. LOVE him...and his leather pants.

I thought this was going to be about who should be with Buffy. I was going to say Angel. Spike was way out of her league.

Being neither attracted to men nor dead people I don't know or care who is hotter. When it comes to which I like more I have to go with Angel.

Spike is great, and can steal a show, but he needs someone to steal it from. Angel can make a show. Spike needs to play second fiddle, on occasion he can do it so well that you might forget about the one playing first, but I've never seen him pull off a solo or make me think he could. On the flip all of the other characters in Angel, and most of the ones in Buffy, even the ones that Spike is (far) better than could play solo just fine.

Spike is great and I'd hate to be without him, but if I'm just picking one he's not it, you can't steal a one man show and second fiddle is useless without a first.

Well, yeah...Spike needs to play off someone. To watch Spike all by his lonesome just talking to himself would be...WAIT! We saw that in Angel's first ep, it was great!

I really hope that Spike TV movie happens, the one Tim (I think it was) Minear pitched to Joss.

Chrisisall, laying in wait

Neither.

I like that guy with the incredibley horrible make up job. You now the green devil, fake as hell lookin dude. Honestly, that guy sucks, i cant believe that we are meant to buy that guy as a character. Just looks silly, and poorly done. Like a Disney channel monster or some crap.

It was laughable, and the kind of thing that made me (and many others)not give any of Joss's previous work a chance cuz it looked so damn corny.

David Borianus is very lame, and that other guys name is Spike and he has spikey hair (wow clever).

Luckily i found Firefly. Ive tryed to watch that other stuff, Angel, Buffy, and it is just stupid.

May the Hellmouth spit a curse upon thee, and sear your flesh with the molten bile that is your post!

Or maybe just give Buffy another chance....
