So, over the last couple weeks, I have watched all three seasons of Angel on tape (having a friend who's a bigger addict than you are is a good thing!). And I noticed something peculiar.

Kate just disappeared. They never explain it. They never mention it. Angel saves her from her little night of Pills and Boose, then she's just gone.... never to be seen or heard from again.

Where the heck did she go?

Well aren’t you just sneaky with the subtext.

She lost her job as a cop. Given the attentions she undoubtably would receive from the criminal element, she left town in a hurry.

Who notes Hollywierd has a much lower opinion of the LAPD, than they did in the days of Jack Webb and Dragnet (TM). "Just the facts, Ma'am." Of course, the conversion of the police into a bodyguard for the rich and famous, didn't help relations with the entertainment community.

Did they actually say that? or is that speculation? I don't remember.

To the best of my knowledge, they never dealt with what became of Kate. Strangely enough, I can't seem to care.

I don't follow Angel consistently, but I did catch the ep where she was kicked off the force. I'd guess they did this because the actress got a bigger role on another series, and they wanted to keep things vague so she could come back if things didn't work out.

ME seems to be very actor-friendly in some ways. As we've all seen, they don't try to tie down supporting players when they come up for roles on other series or in movies. On the other hand, they don't let actors have much control over their own characters, which is different from the scene on most shows. Might have something to do with Whedon's famous hassle with Donald Sutherland.

Perhaps not so famous. What's the deal w/ Sutherland?

Kate's emotional arc reached closure in "Epiphany," where she forgives Angel and is appears at peace with him, herself, and the world, resolving her obsession with him and the demon world since her father's death. But there was no discussion of her plans for the future (within the show) because Rohm left abruptly to do L&O.

I heard speculation that had Rohm not left, Kate would have gotten the Justine arc. With a few adjustments to "Epiphany," it could have worked beautifully. I would have killed to see that.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

I read in an interview a while back where Elisabeth Rohm (Kate) said that she would like to return to Angel as a guest if it was logistically possible.

She's currently in Law & Order, which is filmed on the East Coast.

Wow... that would have been... neat. (My thoughts on this would be more profound, but it's hard to type when you're holding a drool cup in one hand.)

Well, if you're a Buffy fan, then you've seen the movie, right? Much more campy than the series. Whedon has many complaints about changes that were made that ignored the story his script was trying to tell. His biggest complaint is that Sutherland (played Merrick, Buffy's first watcher) rewrote a lot of his own dialog to suit himself. Apparently Whedon's vision of Merrick was not even close to Sutherland's!

Darkhorse did a Buffy "origins" series that is supposed to be closer to the spirit of the original script. Out of print, though you can sometimes find it on EBay.

Yeah, I read the novelization of the Movie. (And have the movie on DVD) The writer is total crap with delusions of Anne Riceness, but the gist of script is there. Oh so much better than the movie.

Speaking of missing ATS characters, anyone remember Nathan Reed? He was a senior WH lawyer in season 2, a bald man with big, black glasses. I can't see any reason why we haven't seen him again, other than the actor just not being able to continue with the role.

That's unfortunate because his apparent replacement, the silver-haired Linwood, is possibly the least interesting character in all of Whedonverse, second only to Gavin, who himself was brought to replace Lindsay.

There's a big Holland Manners shaped hole at the centre of W&H. Of the two replacements I'll take Linwood over Reed.

Agree about Gavin too. Still it is realistic in that it feels like he came from the Real Estate department.

Guess we'll just have to wait until Connor gets his law degree.

Yes, there was a scene where they canned her. Right after the affair with the Precinct Cdr bringing dead cops back to terrorize the streets.
I don't have the title of the ep, but I'm sure someone out there in FFN land does.

The ep's called "Repise." And yes, I'm aware that I'm geek.

Anybody remember the "get a life" skit on Saturday Night Live? Where the special guest at the Trek convention is Julie Cobb. WTF is Julie Cobb? If you have to ask that question, you're not a real Star Trek geek!

I agree about Gavin. At least with Lilah and Lindsey their backstabbing was each to further their own careers. Gavin doesn't seem to be trying to get ahead so much as knock Lilah down. It's annoying. Lindsey was a really great and interesting character. Probably the most developed of all the W&H lawyers as he actually seemed to be a fully realized character. I love that they explored how and why he made the choices he did to be "evil". He sold his soul to escape his past. I noticed last season they tried to do something similar with Lilah (twice mentioning her mother in a home with what seems to be Alzheimers), but it seemed forced with her. Lindsey was so cool. He even had a couple of really great personal reasons for hating Angel (the hand thing, and his love of Darla). Lilah's only real reason for hating Angel is that he bit her that time his body was snatched by the old man, and she even found out later that wasn't him! And Gavin, he has no purpose. No reason to hate Angel, other than he works for W&H. He seems to be less of a character than a simple foil for Lilah, and most of the time, she manages to be that for herself. I say they either can him or start developing him, because GEEZ is he annoying!

Lilah: How did you find me?
Angel: Your assistant.
Lilah: I’ll have his arms broken.
Angel: Already taken care of.

I believe season 2 Lilah was more interesting and well-written than her season 3 self, as were all the characters (excepting Wes whose development over the last 3 years has been the best thing about AtS). Why did Lilah stop being interesting? It's why most eps stopped being interesting -- worthless expository dialogue and scenes. She became an expository device, pure filler, telling characters what they already know for the viewers' supposed benefit ("Your Sahjan. Let's recap...").

Lilah also suffered because of what happend with WH as a whole. The thing with long-running villians -- they have to win every once in a while. Or they become a joke. Every WH scheme nowadays succeeds only in annoying Angel, who threatens their lives, prompting them to undo the damage. They don't scare Angel, and hence don't scare any of us.

Thank God! I thought I was really pathetic, but I didn't know who the heck she was - until I saw the picture. That's only sorta bad, right?

You are strange and offputting.
