I'm reading the transcripts from twiztv.com, since I only saw the first couple episodes on TV, and I just finished "Awakening".

Not really sure what happened at the end, but I was really enjoying the fact that the Beast had been taken care of, the sun had been restored, and the whole Angel/Cordelia/Connor thing had been worked out.

Then I start with "Soulless", and we're back to the "Black Sun".
I get a pain over my left eye as I say, "No. NO. NO! We were done with all that! I don't wanna go through it again!"

So, that ending for "Awakening" was kinda like "Bobby in the shower"? It'd all been just a dream?

The shaman, in order to remove Angel's soul, created a dream where Angel experienced a moment of true happiness. This dream was so real to Angel he lost his soul.

The moment of true happiness is interesting. Connor forgives him, and he gets together with Cordelia. Is this really true happiness for him? If someone can remind or correct me, does he not lose his soul moments after he speaks about Buffy?

It is actually a brilliant scene! After everything has miraculously become perfect in Angel's life, and just as he is acheiving climax in the arms of Cordelia, he mutters Buffy's name and reverts to Angelus.

One implication seems to be that perfect happiness doesn't require the presence of Buffy in Angel's life, but does invoke the thought of her...

Well, y'know, if I'd taken the time to read more than the first coupla lines before coming here and whining, I might've seen the part where Angelus asks Wesley what Angel's deal is with Raiders of the Lost Ark and explains about the "perfect day" fantasy.

Thanks for the input, everybody!

We just watched these two episodes last night. I thought it was really clever, actually.

As we watched Awakening, I had this niggling feeling... the script writers are giving Angel and Cordy just a little too much mushy dialogue; they're not usually so banal... the magic sword through the brain seems a little too easy a solution... how can the Big Bad be dead when we're only half-way through the season? Either it's coming back or it's not really the Big Bad... I'm glad everyone is happy and reconciled, but I'm surprised Connor recovered from his teenaged angst so quickly... no, no, you can't have sex, are you mad?!

And then to find out that that was the device by which Angel was brought to lose his soul -- well, that was priceless. It explained how come the episode was plausible -- just plausible enough to let Angel himself believe it -- yet was just subtly off in all those ways I've listed above. It was fair; the punch line was telegraphed but I didn't put it together in time.

And then Soulless was... well, let's just say that Angelus is one of the best Big Bads of the Buffy/Angel verse. It's probably twisted but I got all shivery watching him in action (much more interesting than Angel, actually).

As an aside, I cannot believe how bad Cordy's judgment was in sleeping with Connor. It was so stupid -- so implausibly stupid -- that it bothers me to no end.

As a second aside, I don't know what's going to happen with the character Cordy, but the actress looks pregnant. No one in the show has mentioned how much bigger and squishier she looks, so maybe they're just ignoring it and they'll invent some explanation for why she isn't there if she gives birth before the end of the season.

Looking forward to more,

Indigo S.

Oh, yeah--she's pregnant!! Apparently caused quite a few unhappy producers (and last-minute story arc changes) when she showed up after the summer hiatus, just before beginning work on the first episode of the season, and told 'em she was 2 or 3 months pregnant, due around March, right about the time the final 2 or 3 episodes would be shot...

Thanks for the pregnancy confirmation. We just watched Calvary and Salvage last night and

*SPOILERS*

holy crikey. I found myself feeling much as I had at the end of Angel's fantasy -- "I knew there was something wrong with Cordelia -- I knew it." She was just a little bit off. Her visions were different; she'd never done the white eyeball thing before. She was making bad decisions for the group, doing really divisive things. It wouldn't surprise me if the real Cordelia is still up in floaty-ville, shouting to the oblivious Champions -- "That's not me! Are you dense? I would never do that! Hel-lo!"

Ok, I'm going to go out on another limb and make another prediction -- I think Angelus is evil, but the ensoulment magic was at least partially effective, because we have yet to see him kill a human. He went on the town, but didn't eat. He came back to the hotel, and Cordy conveniently killed Lilah for him. He went out again, grabbed a blonde, but got distracted by the Beast. And he eyed Faith, but then walked away when the sun came out.

Just my guess. We'll see how it pans out :)
