KMARIE

Hello everyone! I am a newbie to Angel and let me say that this is a great show. I was watching Angel a few nights ago on TNT, when I came into part of an epoisde and I am very confused. I am wondering if anyone can help me out.
This is all I can remember from the episode. Wes and Cordy where running the office by themselves. The mother of the son who was inhabited by a Ethros demon, came to the office and said that she was not going to pay for their services. Wes was in a wheelchair with banadages around waist. What happened to get him into the wheelchair? Then Kate, the cop, was questioned by Internal Affairs and they wanted to know who she was protecting and she didn't give Angel up so she was forced to quit the force. She called Angel upset and drinking. Then Angel gets a metal glove from a antique shope, I think. He is going to kill some demon so he can go into the home office and he is taken in an elevator by a Sr. partner that Angel kills. And he learns that the home office is actually Earth, then it ends.
If anyone can help, I'd appreicate it!!!

~KMarie

EMBERS

Angel had started a vendetta against Wolfram & Hart so he fired Wes, Cordy & Gunn and kicked them out of the Hotel...so they were fighting the good fight on their own.
Wesley got shot by a zombie policeman in the previous episode trying to save Gunn.

Kate was fired from her job on the force....

Cordy and Wesley did manage to remove the eye from the back of a little girls head, but it was the spawn of the Ethros demons and they weren't happy about the removal, but the parents in denial were refusing to pay for the removal...

It was complicated.

And part of the 2nd season...before Darla got knocked up, even before the visit to Pylea (and rescue of Fred)....

All right except the Ethros demon was from S1 ep I've Got You Under My Skin. The demons in Reprise/Epiphany were called Skilosh demons. Episodes guides are your friend: www.trinityofiniquity.com ;)

This fan question does bring up an important question though... what DID happen to Kate, and where did she go?

In reality, as I'm sure some of you would like to point out, actor Elizabeth Rohm got an offer to star on "Law & Order," so of course she took the money and ran. Joss-girl makes good, I couldn't be happier.

But in the FLOW of the Angel story, was the ever referenced again, after that drunken binge? Or were we just supposed to forget she was ever there?

I think it was a fairly natural point for her to leave - although of course I'd have preferred her to stay. The rest of the Angel team didn't really have any reason to mention her again - they didn't know her particularly well did they?

True, but I think it would have been in Angel's nature to check up on her, help her through the rough time, considering she'd been fired and seemed to have turned into an alcoholic.

I mean, even Faith was kind of annoyed about people coming to visit her, but Angel did that anyway. So even though it was necessary for the show, I felt it was kind of out of character for Angel to just forget all about Kate.

After Kate and Lindsey left in quick succession I think the show lost a certain something. S3 was still largely great of course but I always liked the dynamic they established in the first two years - Angel has his team but he also has 'associates' like Kate and the Host that he can turn to when he needs to.

Yeah, I agree with you there... the ensemble cast but also the 'others' that reward us if we watch the show every week. Lindsay and Kate early on, then later the Host, and whatsername, the Electric Chick.

Unfortunately, other than Lindsay or Lorne (the Host), the others were vastly underused... if the show isn't going to bring them back, why have them in the first place?

Gwen ("the Electric Chick") was a pretty poor character IMO. The worst crime against a recurring character was the utterly, utterly pointless killing off of Merl.

Merl was a pretty poor recurring character. If you're going to pick a character to recur, you can do a lot better.

Which is not to say I think all the recurring characters should wear tight leather pants and have lots of cleavage. But, y'know, that can be fun too.

Characters who exist for no reason other than to 'snivel' are a waste of time. See also Willie the Snitch on 'Buffy.' Yawn.

How can you think Merl is a poor character compared to the robotic Gwen? Dear oh dear ;)

Because Gwen a) can throw a punch, and b) has an interesting backstory.

Merl is just a plot device in latex.

There's nothing interesting about Gwen's backstory - it's X-men by numbers. Perhaps if they'd given some reason as to why was electric then it might have been a bit more interesting but they basically said 'she's electric...just because'.

Merl was only a plot device because they made him a plot device. Even in his limited role he brought tons of character and humour to the show, which could easily have been expanded upon.

Valid.

Personally, though, I prefer the ass-kicker. It was during the DVD commentary on "The Train Job" where Joss comments about how he hates those shows where the hero is just so darn SUPER, where they can do everything and anything, a la Indiana Jones.

What he says is interesting, (as the first appearance of Badger plays out) is not THAT guy... but exploring the depths of a character. That is, finding what makes them heroic, but also just how far they can be pushed. How much crap they're willing to take.

Gwen only took so much crap, and would only follow Angel so far. In her limited screen time, it was intereting to ME, to see just how much good she would do, and just how far she would or would not work with Angel and his gang. Conversely, Merl would take crap from an 8-year-old with a lollipop. He's a coward "just because," to use your words.

But that's just me. I'm willing to admit I may have missed something.

Every character doesn't have to be heroic...
