Quote:Angel's hallucinations play on his fears and insecurities. In his first hallucination, Spike tells Angel that all his sacrifices, all his efforts, all the pain he went through, all of it is useless, it means nothing in the big picture. Wesley tells Angel that he is now irrelevant and stakes him. Fred calls him empty, a shell. Spike replaces Angel, not just as a vampire with a soul, but as Buffy's lover. Buffy says "Can you say, 'jumping the gun'? I kill my goldfish!" when just a few scenes before, Fred removed what she called Angel's soul and it was a dead goldfish. The company watch the apocalypse with snacks, seeming unworried because they know that Spike will handle it. Which he does, successfully, finally earning Spike his mortality again, a beating heart, while Angel has lost all purpose and ends up being the mail room guy in the company he once ran. In a saloon, Lorne expects him to sing, but he no longer has a voice or an identity, which frustrates the gang. Fred reiterates her claim of Angel being empty and Wesley is upset because they all paid good money for the show, they paid blood for it. Finally in the sun, the group tells Angel that everything would be so much easier if he just gave up, if he just stopped caring.
