Noticed this watching old episodes of both Buffy and Angel. Every variation on the opening credits seems to have a little "walking scene" at the end, where the entire current cast is seen, well, walking. So I wonder, do you suppose the writers consciously tried to work that in to an early episode each season, or was it just luck?

It was intentional. It started with the Mercury 7 in the movie "The Right Stuff" and has become a standard cinematic shorthand for "here come the heroes"...

It's a cliche I'm always a sucker for.
Gets me everytime.
Actually you can date this back to "The Wild Bunch" which is 1969.

"The cosmic baker took us out of the oven a little too early, and that's the reason we're as crazy as we are..."

I know why it's in the credits. I guess it just makes me smile to think of the writers sitting around going "Damn. Gotta get a they're-all-walking-together scene in here somewhere, so they can put it in the credits." Which they probably don't actually do.
