Greenwalt Close to Terms With 'Miracles'
Fri, May 24, 2002 12:20 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - David Greenwalt, the co-creator and executive producer of The WB's "Angel" is close to signing a contract with Touchstone Television to serve as the showrunner for the new ABC fall season drama "Miracles," reports the Hollywood Reporter.

Greenwalt will continue to work on "Angel" as a creative consultant. Sources suggest that David Simkins ("Roswell," "FreakyLinks") is likely to be the replacement showrunner for the vampire drama, which will enter its fourth season in the fall.

"An unexpected thing happened to me when I first read and then saw the pilot for 'Miracles,' which is that I fell in love," says Greenwalt. "It's got everything -- it asks the big questions about existence, it's got irony and danger and horror and hope, and these are all the things that I love."

"Miracles" stars Skeet Ulrich as a young man assigned to find a scientific basis that will explain reported miracles. But when he witnesses something he can't explain, he is led to team up with a mysterious organization that conducts investigations of its own into the paranormal. Some critics have already suggested that the show looks to be something of a spiritual "X-Files."

"It's a good move for him," says Joss Whedon, creator and executive producer of both "Angel" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," who has worked with Greenwalt for many years. "He's still gonna consult for 'Angel,' so that's good for me, but it's killing me. I'm losing a great writer, a great producer, a great director and a guy without whom I have yet to make an hour of TV. He's the real deal, and there aren't that many of those."

Greenwalt has also worked on the TV series "Profit" and "The Wonder Years," as well as a handful of movies, including "Secret Admirer" which he co-wrote and directed.

How sad! Greenwalt's writing is really one of the only things Angel has going for it, IMO. But since David Fury is moving over to Angel as Consulting Producer (splitting his time between Angel and Buffy), I guess they won't lose much, quality-wise that is. In fact, Angel needs a change... it was really terrible this season (except for like, three episodes).

This may be a blessing in disguise.

EDIT: Maybe it won't be a blessing at all. This David Simkins guy was... and I warn you, this is disturbing... he was a writer for Charmed. *gulp* Oh I hope that isn't indicative of his talent as a showrunner.

David Simkins certainly has a lot of genre expertise: Freakylinks(DOA), Dark Angel, Charmed, Roswell, Vengeance Unlimited, Spy Game, Adv of Brisco County Jr(cool show) and Lois & Clark (where he may have worked with Tim Minear)

He's written for each, and served as exec producer on a couple of them. I must admit I never watched any of these shows regularly -- never even heard of VU and SG.

Bottomline, Joss hired him. So if he has faith, then so do I.

Revised to add:
With regard to Greenwalt departing, that's okay by me. He's shaky when it comes to writing. Though I liked Sleep Tight, it's all plot. When it comes to the characters (Offspring, Tomorrow), he drops the ball. He'll still be consulting, though. Not sure what exactly that means -- Perhaps he'll participate in breaking eps from time to time, or pitch story ideas.

That is a very good point. If Joss has faith, he can't be all that bad, now can he.

I agree with your assessment of Greenwalt. Though I like his writing style and a lot of his ideas, he doesn't really have a handle on the characters. It's sad that he's leaving, but with a show so heavily based on characters, I guess he wasn't helping much. (I'll still miss him if only because of his episode of Buffy in season 1 called "Angel." It remains one of the coolest episodes of the series even after six years.)

I think ATS has had a good season; the first part of the year freaked me out, but I think the second half was overall very strong. Unfortunately, the weakest link was the finale -- aka, Greenwalt's last script.

I don't know how to feel about Greenwalt's going. I think he's been a great hand on the tiller, but his individual scripts ("Offspring" and "Tomorrow" in particular) have often been lackluster, despite the fact that they almost always had strong plot and emotional components that should have made them great. Yet at the same time, the longer plot arcs have continued to have a lot of complexity. How much of that was Greenwalt's influence? I think we're about to find out.

I can only say that I would have been a LOT more upset about him going before I had to watch Cordelia's ascension scene, as badly written and directed a scene as any Mutant Enemy show has ever offered, and one that did a serious disservice to a once-great character.

With the cheesiness of the aforementioned ascension scene, I can't help but wonder if ME is pulling some sort of trick on us. Rumor has it (spoiler)

Select to view spoiler:

that in one of the first episodes of next year, Angel will have to "bust Cordelia out" of Heaven. Why would he have to do that if what's going on is truly innocent? Hmmm. It remains to be seen!

PANDORA

To quote the wise an inimitable Garth Algar:

"We fear change."

Granted, Greenwalt may not be perfect... but who is this Simkin character? Freakylinks? Roswell (sorry fans, I liked the first season too, but it's not up to ME par IMO)? Dark Angel? Charmed? Lois and Clark?

I'll grant you, I never saw Freakylinks (weren't they in the Timeslot of Doom?), but the others, while not entirely wacktacular, do not meet the standard to which we've been taught to hold ME shows. Grant you, that Joss has faith in this person is something, but it doesn't bode all that well.

And this Miracles thing sounds kind of like Highway to Heaven meets X-files, or Touched by a Skeptic- or something.

I agree that there's probably more to Cordelia's "ascension" than meets the eye. However, I still think the scene could have been handled more skillfully -- or, at the very least, a lot less cheesily.

Well, let's remember who the last L&C alum to join Mutant Enemy was: Tim Minear. And honestly, the Roswell thing is kind of encouraging to me, because (at least in the beginning) Roswell wrote relationships fairly well. Right now, ATS doesn't seem to have a clue how to handle romance; I don't want the show to be a soap opera, but I think there has to be some way to integrate relationships into larger drama. Maybe this guy can do it. I don't know. I am willing to find out.

I'm with you there. The premise does zero for me. I will probably turn in out of interest, just to see what Greenwalt does with it, but there's no way I'd watch otherwise.

FURYFIRE

Instead of Simkins, why not promote someone from in company? Like TIM MINEAR would be great, but I bet he's too busy with Firefly now. Personally, I feel Minear's eps are the best, like when Darla sacrificed herself for her baby, or Gunn's gang focing him to kill Angel, or Billy causing Wes to hunt down Fred.
Who else does Angel have? LOl not much.
Smith & Bell mostly just started, then theres Greenwalt, Minear, Goodman (nah:(), and Murphy?

Joss doesnt have much to choose from, hopefully JOSS & GREENWALT could just split their Showrunning credit three ways, thus freeing Greenwalt to do Miracles, after all, why cant her do two shows? Joss has five, a comic book and novel.

Uh, is the tag the same as the signature?

Yeah, I'm so sad David Greenwalt left because he was a big Christian Kane fan and I really wanted Chris to come back to Angel. We all love Lindsey and his evil hand right? Eh, there's always hope.

I miss Lindsey. Here's my vote for more "evil hand" episodes. He's certainly more interesting then Lila... (although this new development with her and Wes is surely something to watch...)

I know. First they kill off Doyle, who was the show's most appealing character, and then they get rid of Lindsey, destroying a full 50% of the show's prettiness quotient (and of course the most interesting villain W&H have ever managed to cough up, but who cares about that?). I'm telling you, all along Greenwalt was just going, "Geez, how much do I have to piss Charlie off before they let me go?"

Boo hoo, what about Jeff Bell? I thought he was the best writer on the show, and i was expecting him to suck since i never liked any of his x files episodes.

Not to say that david simkins can't do it or isn't the man for the job, but, boo hoo, i got all excited at the possibility.
