There's just sooo much stuff on here, and I have very little time to read. Maybe this is to subjective of a question, but are there any fanfic's that are "classics" that I simply must read? You know, 'if you never read a single fanfic again, make sure you've at least read ______'

Perhaps there's a rating system that I'm unaware of, or maybe there was a voted-on "Fanfic Awards," or something.

I'm really up for any category, 'cept maybe 'horror'. Or haiku. Although I see that is niether in the fiction category, nor has it been updated in 4 years. Say, that's mighty tempting . . .

Anyway, thanks for the help. I welcome any and all suggestions.

I mock you with my monkey pants.

The only fanfic I will read is the extended episodes at stillflying.net. They're written in script format and they stick within the framework of canon. I love 'em.

That's interesting, I almost find that the exact opposite of what I'd choose to read.

I haven't really read any fanfic yet - I'm afraid to have the purity of the canon-verse diluted - but my withdrawal symptoms are beginning to become severe enough that I'm starting to look for some, so I guess the request for recommendations goes double for me too.

I think, though, I want to steer clear of anything that's trying to be "like" canon. I haven't given up hope of more actual canon coming up and I fear that trying to hold two parallel 'verse's in my head at once, should that happen, might dilute the impact of both. Irrational perhaps, but I got the right to be my own kind of stupid, right? :)

Anyone have any good recommendations for fanfics that steer clear of territory that might end up contradicting canon? I found one today called "Free" that I liked - a little insignificant moment between Kaylee and Mal that could happen at any time without really interfering with any main storyline. Is there a lot out there in that kind of style? Any must-reads?

I've done a bit of casual browsing of the fanfics, and I have a recommendation for each of you. Yay!

A good short story that is decidedly non-canon is "I Sing of the Spirit Electric" over at Fanfiction.net (link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2626804/1/ ). It looks at what might have happened had the show had turned more science-fictiony in Objects in Sace.

I also recommend the much longer canon-centered story is "Lex Talionis," which ocurrs between Objects in Space and the BDM (link to part I: http://fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=213 ). It is a fully enjoyable story-- lots of fleshing out of characters, good writing, great dialogue. Nothing left me scratching my head saying, "wait... Book would never say that!" (something that happens more often than I would like in the world of fanfiction). Reading it helped me with the transition between series and movie: it relates just how things have gotten much worse for Mal (in the paraphrased words of Joss's commentary) in between the two. Be careful though, it does deal with very mature subject matter that not everyone would find appropriate.

I have to second the stillflying.net recommendation. If I could only read one fanfic, it would be these. If I had to pick one of these, I would pick Chains (though, I highly recommend reading all of them; some of Chains my not make sense out of context). You can find the stories at the website, or here. Look in the Blue Sun Room, under the letter V - "Virtual Firefly: Episode..."

Aside from that... hmm...

Most of the other fanfics I read are shamelessly M/I centric. Very good if you're a shipper, but some with more plot than others...

one author that has almost never failed me is Maystone http://www.fanfiction.net/u/335326/ , and Hawkmoth has some fabulous stories (can't find the link just now, there's a thread here somewhere...) Inlashal's "Least Said, Soonest Ended" is superb: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1631697/1/

"The Power of the Pen" is hysterical http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1292958/1/

I have to second anything written by Tara O'shea aka LJC. Her fic is simply amazing.

Otherwise, pretty much start at A in each category and work your way through it.

You'll probably hate a majority of it because its not your cuppa, or whatever, but you'll find little gems well hidden that make it worth the long search.

Those virtual eps at stillflying look really good. I'll have to check them out.

I helped write a virtual Buffy season 8 that was (I'm the first to admit this) not brilliant. We started writing it halfway through season 7, and of course the finale threw our own season waaaay out of whack. It was great fun though, and I'm hugely impressed by people who can write a virtual season and stay within canon. It can be really difficult to find fic that doesn't resolve all the issues nice and neatly, or mess around with the main characters and wind up changing them completely.

Or a fic called "Kaylee's Lament" also by ScrewtheAlliance.

If you want to read something that's really like a real episode, try some of the stuff in lonewolf's series. I found that to be really intriguing and well written. He introduces some new characters who fit in really nicely with our BDMs. It was a nice mixture of angst, romance and everything else. It wasn't concentrated too much on one genre, and that made it really realistic.

Just yet another reccommendation for Kaylee's Lament and Treasure by ScrewtheAlliance. Great action, character development and exposistion that's actually engaging! *shameless plug* Check it out!

Also, anything by Amdobell is lovely, but my favorite is the Nine Hells Series.

Hi there! Newcomer to the site here (and to the whole world of internet forums come to that!) but I'm also interested in getting my hands on more good Firefly stories. I've trawled through Fanfiction.net but, like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get (and don't you just hate biting into those coffee ones?!)

My secret shameful vice is the crossover story! I love seeing two groups of characters I love being shoved together and seing if it'll work! Okay, sometimes it really doesn't but it can be such fun when it does! I notice from glancing through that the Sun Room doesn't have a section for crossovers. Are they just too embarrassing or are there others out there that share my depraved obsession? If so where do they hide them?

I too embarrassingly adore crossovers. Expecially Buffy crossovers, lol. If you want the most fun Firefly crossover ever, check out the book, "Finding Serenity" there's a full article (Called Mirror/Mirror; A Parody) in there about what would happen if the crew of Serenity and the crew of the Enterprise (the newest, lamest crew anyway, from "Enterprise") switched places. HIGH-larious!

If you like Crossovers, try this one on Fanfiction.Net, a crossover with SG-1. I am finding it quite good.

Winding River: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2833397/1/

I've also been enjoying quite a lot of post-Serenity fanfictions that I think are very good (I tend to prefer post-Serenity fanfiction because I came into Firefly after watching the movie).

What an aim I had to go and recommend your own story! LOL. I really didn't know. But yes, I am enjoying your story, especially because I love River and I love SG-1, even if I haven't seen most of its later seasons. I wish there were more Stargate crossovers that were as well done as yours.

And, anyways, if you've searched Fanfiction.Net, then you must have seen this other crossover, with Harry Potter, which is rather good as well, IMHO:

Browncoat, Green Eyes: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2857962/1/

And there are plenty of other non-crossover fanfiction I've been enjoying a lot on this site or on various livejournal communities. You just have to search a bit. :)

I've finished a nice long chapter 8 but am waiting for an edit from a friend before posting!

I was hoping to get a conversation going as to people's views on crossovers in general.

How many out there think that they're embarrassing self indulgent rubbish?

For those who don't like them, who is brave enough to admit that weird and unlikely combinations intrigue them just a bit as to how that might work?

Does anyone have a bizarre crossover they want to suggest? I could always wrack my brains for a short story that might work!

I'm not actually a crossover fan at all - I find that too often either the physical crossing is handled badly or one or more of the characters tends to be OOC. Maybe it's just the ones I've read. I live in hope...

Anyway, in response to the original question - if you never read a single fanfic again, make sure you've at least read these three, in no particular order:

* Next of Kin, which I only know of at the author's livejournal - http://eustacia-vye28.livejournal.com/ and go back four pages to find the first post. (At the moment it's four pages... chapter 1 is currently sitting at the bottom of the fourth page back, so you may need to look further. Posted on November 9th 2005 in case it drops into calendar.) It starts out slightly pedestrian but very quickly shifts into that rarest of gems, an utterly plausible post-BDM Rayne, with a superb supporting cast of OCs (Jayne's mother Vera!) and a star turn from Regan Tam.

* The Fish Job, which I'm surprised nobody's mentioned yet as it got rave reviews when it was being posted - very good pre-BDM story, perfectly paced, perfectly characterised and, at points, psychologically terrifying. Start from Mal4prez's profile at http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=mal4prez.

* Bed and Wine, by Kaynara, starting at http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=Kaynara. It's the sequel to a two-parter called Strange Bedfellows and a longfic called Bedlam; you need to read the others first. They're very good. Bed and Wine is brilliant. Again, the characterisation is the winner.

I tend to navigate by author as much as fanfic; the remainder of my top ten authors list, therefore, comprises an author already mentioned, LJC, and several who haven't, namely Maantre, 2x2, Amdobell, Kispexi2, and Leiasky (on this site) and Roseveare (on fanfiction.net). I always tend to go for long fiction that's well-characterised.

I've tried to read this and the writing is good, but I just cannot abide authors who have River refer to herself as "she" or "the girl", when she never does that in the show except in one or two occasions, one of which, in Objects in Space, just happens because Mal is talking over her head about her to Simon, with her just at his side. He asks Simon "does she understand that?" and River answers "she understands. She doesn't comprehend", and you can't tell me she hasn't a perfectly valid reason to refer to herself as "she" in the context of the conversation (and she was making a point, at that). I just get mad to see everyone -- even authors that seem to write well -- falling into that particular trap. Didn't they watch the series and the movie?

Sorry for the rant...

Edit: I have read a little more into the story and the author seems to gradually loose the whole "she" and "girl" thing (that I've been able to see, as I'm only in the 3rd chapter), but I would have liked that she hadn't even gotten into it in the first place. Oh well...

So, after reading this thread, I'm losing my life to fanfic. I'm such a geek. But in that good way. Right? ... Right?

Anyhow, I thought I'd mention one that hasn't been posted yet. Well, it's a series. I ran into it here: http://words-in-flight.livejournal.com/tag/retro-rec

http://firefly.populli.org/archive/2/spacepirates.shtml
http://firefly.populli.org/archive/2/catand.shtml
http://firefly.populli.org/archive/3/recurringnightmares.shtml
http://firefly.populli.org/archive/3/timeto.shtml

Absolutely amazing.

Now, I have a request. I'm looking for some good post-BDM fic. I read Forward Motion, and that started so well, but kinda lost its momentum towards the end. (If the author is reading this, don't be offended! I read the whole thing and it's the best post-BDM fic I've read yet.) I have to say that I'm a bigger fan of canon pairings (not so much on Jaylee and a big no on Mal/River).

Anybody got a rec?

Thanks ... and a big thanks to all of you writers out there.

Shanna's stories are excellent. I absolutely love them.

For stories to read, do you want recs that are heavy on plot? Fluff? A mixture? Do you prefer to read specific pairings? Like not M/I but S/K or vice versa?

Janafae writes S/K and R/J fluff.

leighkohl writes S/K. Most of her stuff has a plot, I think.

Kaynara does a lot of M/I with some S/K and is definitely plot driven.

TamSibling has done some post and some pre BDM stuff and its very good. Mostly plot driven.

Wanmei does a lot of S/K stuff. She also does non-cannon pairings.

AMDOBEL writes cannon pairings with plot.

FrellingBlonde writes S/K fluff.

I do some of all of it tho' never any non-cannon pairings.

Off the top of my head, that's all I can think of for Post BDM fic.

Thanks for the prompt response.

In response to your questions, I'll say that I'm a plot kind of fan (but who isn't?). Some of the "extended vignettes" are fun, but I'm a sucker for a story.

I've got no specific pairings that I like to read, and even though it's all kinds of cathartic to read people's versions of how Mal and Inara finally get together, maintaining a tension definately helps the stories pop.

I'll look into the authors you mentioned, and if you're feeling kind, maybe you (or anyone else, for that matter) could make a specific recommendation. All y'all are a prolific bunch!

:-)

Thanks again.

I pointed a few above in a previous post in this thread (Red Run, New Prospects, GeekUSA's second season) but you can also try this one: Antebellum (multi-chaptered but still WIP). Start here: http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=6402

If you find more good Post-BDM fic out there, let me know, since that's the kind I tend to prefer. :)

Ah, and if you read Red Run, stick to it despite it being a bit slow on plot after the first 2-3 chapters until later chapters, it has the most amazing character development I've seen post-BDM yet for all characters, especially River. In fact, the chapters that are part of the Group Therapy and afterwards are incredible and funny and profound. I recommend this series highly, so stick with it even if the first couple of chapters seem a bit slow. It gets better and better. I thought the author might have given up on it after not posting more chapters since January but they recently published another, so I'm hoping they write more.

Wash: This landing is gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: [deadpan] Oh God, oh God, we're all going to die?

It can be incredibly nerve-wracking when you read a work in progress and get caught up ; only to discover that there hasn't been any progress in over 6 months.
I must be waining on continuations of at least a dozen fics(here and fanfic.net) at the moment.

Waiting.

I could stand to hear a little more.

Have to add my weight behind Virtual Firefly ( http://www.stillflying.net/default.htm).
Just beta read episode 2x04 and it is super shiny

Oh and my own series Captains and Spies, Pilots and Princes (chap1: http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=9350) I like to think that it has some merit to it. Shameless self promotion.

Here's how it might of been http://www.stillflying.net/default.htm

You could try mine. Ain't nobody else doin' my boasting for me, so... It's all at fanfic.net at the moment, until I work out how to post it here. It's canon, no slash, and I think it's pretty damn cool. (Ducks the flaming)

I'm new here too. I've had the site saved in my list of favorites for months, but I've never really visited here to read the stories...until the last four days.

The one thing that I can't get used to is the way that chapters are set up (various stories going to different genres). When reading stories, I would have up to five different screens minimized to get to the next chapter as quickly as possible.

I read through all the types, but my main focus was romance. I went in there and searched for stories with my coupling preference and then I looked for the works by that particular author. I read some of the feedback for them and determine who wrote the coupling that I preferred.

Also, I went onto FF.Net to find any stories. There was one particular author who brought me here because of the guidelines on that site. Okay, I'm a smut whore...LOL.

Thanks for the rec on Shanna's "Space pirates" etc. story. Excellent work and it really hits the spot.

I have a rec as well: "Gutterstars" by poisontaster on ff.net:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2504171/1/
It's PreSeries. Simon tries to find River. Great story, good writing.

Other stories by poisontaster are short but good as well.

Entirely pointy.

I like http://www.stillflying.net/episodes.htm
They start after the BDS and before the BDM.
I like the LONEWOLF7 fanfics even better. They start after the BDM. He does a great job with River.

MADMAN007

At the risk of calling attention to myself, I have written two Firefly/Serenity fanfic. There are no crossovers or unrealistic romantic tie ins. They are just true to the stories set in the 'Verse that Joss gave us. Reviews tell me I have the voices of all characters I use down pretty well. One is set before the series starts and the other is ten years after the BDM. See for yourself.

I'd agree with Eloisa...gotta read anything by Kaynara, esp Bed and Wine.

I'm such a sucker for Mal/Inara...all that sexual tension in BDTVS/BDM. Lawdy (fanning myself).

LOVE it...the 'voices' are spot on; no 'wince-inducing' bits that just aren't them. And the spelling/punctuation is fab (errors KILL the moment).

I'm anxiously awaiting the finish...and don't know what I'll do when I get it!

ScrewTheAlliance's two EPICS are just fantastic - very much like getting an entire season of new episodes (with a story arc!)

In fact, I wanted to ask if anyone out there could recommend writers/stories that are similarly gifted as far as plot and characterization (I'm incredibly picky...) I love having things I can completely escape into. Thanks!

Walk tall, or don't walk at all...
