I'm having trouble sifting through all the writings in the Blue Sun Room and find a novel-length story that is really good.

Any reccomendations would be wonderful.

Are you worried that I cut up my mattress for no reason or that I had a perfectly good reason that you can't see?

Valeriebean!

Can't go wrong! Plus you can download her stories in PDF files! Great on a PDA!

Look under Drama or General fiction. And be sure to read her stories in the correct order. She nails Book completely and writes one of the best Cap Mals!

Other awesome writers:

2X2
Jetflair
Mal4prez

Happy reading!

I recomend a series called 'The Job'.
Can't quite recall who it's by.

I am looking for a good signature, this is only temporary.

Tamsibling writes some good stories as do Kaynara and Mal4Prez. Screwthealliance is good too, though REALLY long.

To find their work, go to 'My Firefly' and where you see your name at the end of the url string, type in the above names.

Leiasky writes great Silee as does Leighkohl, and Kaynara and Mal4Prez write terrific Mal/Inara, with the occasional Simon/Kaylee shout-out!

I also like Amdobell (mostly canon pairings although he/she can deviate), 2x2 (Mal/Inara), Jane0904 (writes Mal and the crew with a very integral original character, so if you only want to see the crew, skip her. But her character voices are pretty much dead on!) and Wanmei and Chazzer (a fairly new writer) writes good Simon/Kaylee. Lattelady6 writes terrific River/Jayne and Mal/Inara.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that standout. Happy reading!

Virtual Firefly = http://www.stillflying.net

A team of writers writing in tv script format taking up from where the series left off and working in all JW canon to date (graphic novel and film). They do a very good job, a lot like reading the unfilmed script Dead or Alive - feels like Firefly. Also in pdf format.
They are closing in on the end of season 2 and the end of the film. Season 3 should be very interesting!

Yay for Virtual Firefly! I am part of the crew there, and the upcoming "episodes" are going to be really good. Right now, we are taking the movie and playing it out as if it had been an entire 22 episode season instead of the two-hour movie that it is. We also deviate from the movie and go other places that I'm not sure exactly how we got there from the canon stuff (I'm only a proofreader, so I'm not really open to all of the plotlines for the next few seasons). Also, we are filling in holes that appeared in the movie and creating some new sub-plots. To me, it feels so much like canon that I could almost swear Joss is working with the chief writer on the project (there is a rumor going around that the chief writer even has Joss locked in a cupboard).

actually stinkingrose, your stuff is what got me to love fanfic originally, so thanks for that. Also, although we are supposed t be talking about fanfics, why not throw fan projects in there as well? Into the Black is a fan created and produced story set in Joss' verse, but with totally different characters. Their website is www.intotheblack.ca

Also, fanfic wise, I'll give another yay for jetflair, cause that stuff is really good. There is also a website that is run by her. The url is http://www.serenityverse.com/

This is the head writer for Virtual Firefly here, and I want to thank the foks who gave us a shoutout. I will neither confirm nor deny the rumors regarding Mister Whedon and my cupboard...

If I can toot our projects horn for a moment, I'd just like to say that I believe we're one of the longest-running fan fiction projects out there, and also one of the few with a few staff (we have a total crew of nearly two dozen talented folk, including artists, techies, proofreaders, and even some some professional writers). Since December of 2005, we've produced more than 20 episode-length scripts, which means that if you haven't discovered us yet, you've got more over a thousand pages of Firefly joy to read.

At the risk of starting to sound like an infomercial, I'll say thins before I go: Now is a really good time to sign on if you haven't already. We're airing a new epsiode later this week, and it'll be the first of 8 eps aired on a bi-weekly basis, which will bring us right to the end of Season Two!

We'd love to have you aboard. New passengers are always welcome on our bird!

There are lots of great writers here, but (for me), the ones what really stand out are Leiasky, Tamsibling, Mal4prez, Screwthealliance, 2x2, Wanmei, and Leighkohl. There are others, but I'll probably end up mispelling them, so I leave to others to list.

Having fun yet?

I just finished reading Mal4Prez's "The Fish Job". It was exciting and funny. Hooboy, was it good! And don't worry, it's not *really* about fish. ;)

Many excellent recs above, I agree!

Sadly absent is Guildsister's Truthsome and the Blue Sun Job. She's an excellent writer, and obviously put a lot of work into constructing and presenting her plot. It's a detailed back story for Mal and Zoe, thought provoking and entertaining stuff!

If you're looking for length, don't mind a crew which is almost entirely OCs, and can stomach a fairly weak start, you should look at my own opus, "Legacy". It's already more than 200,000 words in length, cut into easy, bite-sized pieces for easy consumption. Just start at 'Reaved' and go up the line. They get better as they go.

Not from the Blue Sun Room, but Choices by Tzegha is very good.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1217106/1/ (make sure there is a "/" at the end, or the link will not work.)

Set between the series and the BDM I think, but it may be AU for the BDM.

As Mal4prez said, the stories by guildsister are pretty much a must (even if you disagree with the conclusions, they are still put forward in a very convincing manner. It may take you time to actually consider the possibility for a different backstory.), but I would say so are the two by mal4prez.
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=guildsister
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=mal4prez

Add to that "That Old Yeh Shen Story" and "Lex Talionis" by TaraLJC in the BlueSun Room and I would consider those a very good start.
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=LJC

and if you got time, the stories by ScrewtheAlliance are also very well written - but be warned you may need to set aside a little time and read them as a proper book. i would estimate I take between 30 mins and an hour per chapter (sometimes longer). The first story has 28 chapters, the second around 90. A very entertaining read.
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=screwthealliance

Then there is the brilliant Virtual Firefly. written by a talented team of writers, it is episodic in nature, it has all the episodes as a transcript so it feels very much like Firefly. As they say "here's how it might have been..."
http://www.stillflying.net

Since I mentioned that, I must also mention the other episodic saga - Firefly TVS. It seems to be back from the dead with a whole new episode. Many people probably got scared by the first episode - it was brave. It showed that the writers would not be scared of doing the unthinkable. But it also probably put people on edge.
http://www.firefly-tvs.com

Tranquility by CaptainVimes is also turning out interesting. I hope the author continues with the story. Same with "The Losing Side" by jetflair.

/This was gonna be a short post, but it just took on a life of its own. I had to keep typing. Honest!

I would recomend anything by LucasHarper, especialy the Sunshine Days stories.

I also really liked the new season of firefly written by GeekUSA.

IN THE OPOSITE DIRECTION,
I would most certainly NOT recomend anything written by myself. I have only written four paragraphs, mabey five out of an entire SERIES that I am proud of, and one of those isn't even the whole paragraph, just a line by simon in chapter 4.
but then again, what do you expect of a highshcool student posting stuff that he wrote over a year ago at an ungodly hour of the morning?

I have a list of fanfic bookmarks that I wish to keep a hold of (started after I lost a ton of links in my browser) on my site:
http://www.theraggedyedge.co.uk/Firefly/Fanfic

Most but not all links are right back to here in the Blue Sun Room, listed by author. (chances are if you like one tale by an author, you will like the others too)

All 100% not Rayne except the saga by Kaynara (I got too far into it before it showed its fangs).

(My fic preferences page linked on that will tell you more of what I look for.)

I hope you find some good reading out there.

Overall though I would say we are in a good period. Mal4prez is posting, so are Jetflair and STA. Virtual Firefly is also pretty active.

Exactly!

Rayne I've suffered through only three times because the writing was excellent, Kaynara's "Bed and Wine", Lattelady's "Voices and Visions", and Nikiness' "Details of the War".

With Maliver the characterizations are portrayed to far from canon for me...Mal starts acting like an adolescent (probably the age of the writer- 16 or 17) and River is MarySued into a cross between Zoe and Inara. River becomes highly sexualized and always knows everything and her and Mal become the Bonnie and Clyde of the verse.

Silly, I know, let them have their fun!
