I'm just getting back into sewing, and I'm working on a Kaylee Jacket, is this the right spot to see if there's a thread about people's FF costuming work? I'd like to see some photos of what others have done.

Thanks!!!

:-)

If this isn't the right place; sorry for the inconvenience.

I know Tristan occasionally posts threads about costuming, usually about stuff he and a few others are working on. Check out his profile and see what he's posted in the Blue Sun Room, or send him a PM.

Or if you like... make this an official costume thread! Everyone's entitled to make new threads ya know and I know there are crafy posters about who have the skillz and are more than willing to share.

Any crafty posters want to share their craft knowledge? There's gotta be a few sewers about...

Ok, I changed it!!! If anyone wants to discuss costuming or crafty stuff (making your own props or costumes, painting your kitchen like the common room, knitting Jayne hats, etc...) this is now the place!!!!

Tristan is an awesome resource, I've already been speaking to him, but I don't want to bug him too much!!! So I thought I'd bug the rest of you.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to add a lining to an unlined jacket pattern. It can't be as simple as cutting out mirror image pattern pieces of a lining fabric, can it?

Speaking as somone who almost failed first year secondary school home ec because she couldn't sew a tablecloth... I can't think how else you'd do it. Your approach sounds about right. Maybe try it on an old unlined jacket and see how it holds up?

*EDIT* Yes, a tablecloth. You had to sew the edges and I couldn't do it. Can't cook and can't sew. No nice man is ever going to marry me.

I was good in Home Ec, but I've been away from sewing for a looooong while. I'm a bit rusty. Tristan gave me the head's up on a pattern to use for Kaylee's jacket, but it wasn't lined. I did find a website for sewers that addressed that VERY topic:
http://www.sewing.org/enthusiast/html/el_lining1.html

I was looking at screen captures online of the jacket in the episode Serenity, I'm going to rewatch it, too. But in the photos there appear to be buttons, but no buttonholes, and I can't figure out if there are slits on the sides.
Oooo, I'm so excited. I might look for a coverall pattern, too.

I added a projects photo album to my MySpace page ( www.myspace.com/sarathelaundress) to document my (painfully slow) progress.

I think I put this thread in the wrong place, so I moved it to General Discussion:

Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

Many Chinese-style jackets actually close with what are called "frog and loop" closures. These are comprised of a length of cord or fabric-covered cord, part of which forms a decorative knot handsewn to the front of the garment and the other part forming either a knot-like button or a loop to put the button through.

These closure sets can be found at most craft and sewing supply stores and it's possible to make your own, but way more trouble that necessary!

They have jigs at folkwear.com (under accessories) for making the decorative knots for frogs out of cord.
But you're right, it's easier to buy!

How is this going?
I'm working on doing 3D characters for use in Poser & MAX.
Having patterns for the character clothes would REALLY help; is the state of firefly clothing technology up to patterns yet?

Patterns? I know of existing patterns that look similar to costumes in FF. I haven't sewn the jacket yet. I'm trying to get my sewing skills back up to speed before I cut into that fabric!!! I want to do some things that aren't in the pattern; add a lining, maybe a pocket inside, covered buttons, etc...
