I'm sure that everyone have their favorite fics out there and wouldn't mind promoting 'em, so I'm asking you wonderful folks to give me a few recs! I do have certain things I look for (or not as the case may be)..

I'm not looking for any 'ships. There could be mentions of 'em (of strictly the canon kind) but would NOT be the main focus of the story.

I'm a huge huge Simon fan, and while he doesn't need to be the front and center of the story, I WOULD like him to be in it in a significant way.

I'm all for comedy, action/adventure, drama, darkfics (well, not too explicit), or just something damn silly. Right now I'm in the mood for action.

For some _strange_ reason, most Simon fics involve angst of the romantic type. I even found out the fandom had an acronym (CSI) for Simon/River... took me a while to realize it stood for crazy space incest. I had a good laugh.

In fact, if it's a good story with no shipping as the main focus, I'll read it. I found the delightful "Big Damn Zombies, sir" and absolutely loved it.

Anyway, enough of my yapping. Anyone want to share a good story you've found/wrote?

I have a character study of Simon here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1437

and an action/adventure type story here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1437

(I'd recommend more, but I don't think they're what you're looking for.)

Because I'm not only a Simon fan as well, and also because I'm a shameless self-promoter, I recommend my stories. I'm writing a trilogy of sorts that more or less focus on Simon.

The first part of my trilogy is "The Serenity Gig", which tells the story of Simon and Kaylee's wedding on the ship told from an outsider's perspective. The second part is "Blue Hand Blues" which focuses on River primarily, but Simon still has a part in it. As sort of a 2.5, there's "Shotgun Tam" and "The Repercussions of Shotgun Tam", which I think are very different from any Simon related fics out there. It deals with what happens to Simon when he finally kills someone out in the black. And the whole thing come to a sort of conclusion in my ongoing series "You Can't Go Home Again", where the Alliance goes bankrupt, and Simon, River and a five months pregnant Kaylee come home to Osiris after four years to deal with what has happened between them and their parents.

The first two stories are hit and miss, but it's the latter two stories that I think are my best material.

Peace

The Serenity Gig - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2755

Shotgun Tam - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=3444

The Repercussions of Shotgun Tam - http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=3487

And because I don't want to have tons of links to my individual chapters, here's just all my stuff - http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=reginaroadie

Wanmei has done some character studies of Simon. Amdobel writes some good stories with him as well, though they do turn 'shippy (cannon) at some point. I won't rec my own stuff because most of it is 'ship (cannon) related, though Simon, and by default, Kaylee, is the focal point of most of it.

It's hard to find non 'ship stories as everyone likes to pair all the characters with someone.

Hmm, angst-lite, Simon-heavy fic? Not easy to find out there, as the man is practically angst-on-legs. :)

But try ManicGiraffe fics: http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ManicGiraffe. It's humour, action, adventure, Simon-centric and not angsty, and even if it has a canon ship in it it's not too central. His Simon and Jayne stories are just pure humour, no 'ships. Try also "Generic S/K plot outline" - a hilarious parody on al those 'shippy fics.

Here's another funny story: Male Bonding ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=5849) - Serenity boys go to a bar, have a fight and spend the night in a police quarters. Nothing like that to promote male friendship. :)

Something in the same vein, Maystone's "Matinee" and "Last Night at Sally-Ann's". She also has a great non-shippy Simon character study: Ghosts. Get them here: http://firefly.populli.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi?Author=Maystone&NumToLis
t=0
.

Or this one, it's a parody/humour: Hormones ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=7482). It's a naughty but hilarious look at River growing up. Has Simon in it, who gets upper hand in the end. :)

Since several others have already done it, I don't feel so bad about self-promotion.

10 chapter fic, set between The Train Job and Bushwacked: http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=11178

Long fic (not yet complete), set post-BDM: http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=9954

I like to think I write pretty close to canon stuff. There is virtually no romance mentioned in these, except in passing (I wrote a few others that are solely romance/smut, but these aren't them).

Just thought I would bump this for anyone who wanted to rec any summer reading fics. I started looking in the BlueSun for fics I may have missed, being that we don't have any new canon to inspire, lately.

I've been reading RIVERISMYGODDESS's work mentioned above (nice job, by the way) and I found a little unsung gem by GEEKUSA- Firefly: Second Season Series (unfinished post BDM)

And of course Jetflair's manifesto on Mal's character roots in "The Losing Side".

Also, my first sort of crossover, "VOID" by Nisus, over at ff.net (post BDM, great plot with all characters present, but mostly M/I and River -"the trio")... No! Not like that! Just read you'll see.

I like plot driven fics with canon pairings and believable character growth and dialog, that don't stray to far from the themes and tone of the show/movie. I like insights and exploration of the relationships, but nothing to slurpy or shippy. I don't want to have to be convinced of anything.

Soo? What's everyone reading? Any recs?

I can't rec her enough. There's 'ship (cannon), but like the show, it's a balance of adventure, humor, drama, and a little bit of the 'ship. All the characters get pretty much equal time. Each character voice rings true.

I'm addicted to her ongoing series, I'm not ashamed to say.

Start with The Fish Job, then Easy Tickets, then Back Stories (which is a WIP). Enjoy!

Thanks for the Rec, EmpireX...I have to confess, I read Mal4Prez's stories out of order (Duh) and they are BRILLIANT in everyway. Recently, I've had more time to reread some chapters and now Backstories is makin a whole lotta more sense, especially River's fantasys and where her head is at this juncture and not being able to connect and help Mal this time. *sniff*

I'd be curious to what you think, I know we won't get much out of the supreme writing goddess herself. Her lips are sealed.

If it's action you're looking for, hewhokicksalot wrote a lovely screenplay entitled "A Mighty Thorn in a Mighty Paw" that might fit the bill. Lengthy, but worth the read.

Here are some of my favorite fics

"The Losing Side" by Jetflair. A character study of Mal set in the Alliance POW camp. It's now at over 52 chapters but well worth the read. Her insight int his character is uncanny.

For pure adventure, anything by ScrewtheAlliance, http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ScrewtheAlliance Unfortunately his latest, "Unfinished Business" is updated only sporadically because he's in the middle of writing an actual book for money.

I'll second anything by Mal4Prez and if you like a continuing story updated almost every day, you'll enjoy Jane0904.

It's almost like one of those old timey serials at the movies. She even leaves you hanging at the end of the chapter with a cliffhanger.

It's post BDM and just like the series, there's action, anst, humor and even a little sex. She keeps the ships canon except for for Mal. He and Inara never get together. In fact, he's married to an OC but she fits right in with the crew as she's a Browncoat and a former student at the Academy.

Also, Tamsibling, in accordance with her name is Simon/Kaylee centric but not to the exclusion of other ships. She has lots of action and adventure for all the crew too.

Thanks for the recs fellow Browncoats!

And to you authors, Thanks! I know you put a lot of time and effort in your work. And all of you are prolific and talented writers, and that includes you Jane0904.

I do tend to stay within canon boundaries, especially in post BDM longer fics. Short stand alones can be fun, with alternate pairings and endings, but not a whole verse. Sorry, not for me. I have to read enough Persuasive Essays as it is.

I don't know if that makes me a purist or a traditionalist, but I DO know that I want it to be JOSS that gives us the continuation of his story, in his verse.

We need a sequel soon! Give everyone the Special Edition for Christmas!

Like I mentioned earlier, mal4prez, I read ET before The Fish Job so my timeline had a few gaps. Once I went back and read The Fish Job and viewed Objects in Space one more time, I was able chart River's slide into somewhat of an altered reality abyss... that we also pretty much witness in the BDM.

By the time of Serenity, Mal is obviously dark and closed off. All she is able to feel from him is his despair. Whatever help she was able to provide in the past (like with Early) is no longer available to her. It certainly gives new meaning to Mal's "she is still crazy" instead of "not quite right". I love her wearing that childlike snow-spacesuit.

River isn't feeling very cherished or valued anymore... except to be exploited while helping on a job. And Inara isn't there to scold... Mal!!! LOL

Just some observations that I've noticed that connected well with her portrayal in your fic. And the events connecting the stories.

Good to here that you're still writing. I'm looking forward to Leiasky's sequel, also. Not so much with dying of characters, though.

Oh, well , I'll still read and rave.

Ya know, I hadn't thought of it that way until a second or third viewing of the DVD.
I do tend to make literary connections. It's the nature of my job.

Dicken's Oliver Twist comes to mind. Under-age orphans drawn into a life of thievery by exploitive adults.

Mal is DARK DARK in the BDM, no argument there, and he does USE her at Lilac, knowing she is bat shit crazy and could be physically harmed. He is even sarcastic about it "there could be tears".

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I really don't think Mal has any real affinity for River.
He recognizes her abuse at the Alliance's hands and may relate to it, but he only celebrates her for "what is useful to him".

At the end of the BDM we see more acceptance of her as a person, and not just a useful weapon to be used, because she proves some level of control. But, I have no doubt that he will kill her if she threatens the crew or what Mal deems as a liability to "me and mine".

I think Mal's unconditional endearment of River is more fandom then canon.

They've already had two Mexican standoffs in the movie...where do you see this going?

Possibly true. The only time he really talks to her in the whole series is near the end of OiS. Apart from that (I have said this before) they could be on entirely different ships.

Even in he BDM he only talks to her on the bridge because she has a gun pointed at him.

Mal is a hollowed out person. The only person he shows real emotional contact with is Kaylee - and even she is rebelling by the time of the BDM, blaming him for everything.

On the other hand I don't think he was "using" using her for the job in the BDM taking the original drafts and some bits from Virtual Firefly ( http://www.stillflying.net) which were possibly from the early draft of Serenity, she was supposed to say "I am the brains of this operation". Her use is potentially (or not) suggested by her. She does not enter the building 'til after the violence has been completed. Reavers are an entirely different matter, one that cannot be accounted for. But he could have said no.

What Mal says to Simon is more on the lines of he is annoyed with him, not saying he does not care about River.

If it came down to it, I am certain he would shoot/kill River. I would say that is more a point of tension between him and Simon rather than River. granted she would not be too pleased to end up dead, but would she want to be allowed kill the people she cares about? (this point has potential to derail any topic.)

I don't think Mal has the capability to be unconditionally endeared to anybody. Nor the intention to ever be so. When Inara bluffs, he calls it, even though it is the last thing he wants.

Saying all that, I do think there is some endearment between them. With Caveats and Addendum's.

Slightly off topic (me? never!), but I must have watched the Pilot episode Serenity a dozen times before I realised where (I think) Mal decided the Tams were his problem and not something he should be rid of. (It's the bit before he talks to Kaylee in the infirmary.)

Oh, I don't think River had any problem with going for a ride. Mal could have said NO, and he does wait until they have secured the station before bringing her in. I just feel that he put her usefulness (on a heist) before her safety and that makes me feel bad for both of them.

And I agree, Mal doesn't let to many people in. He is affectionate with Kaylee and protective of Inara. That is all he is capable of in his hollowness. He has a darkness. I'll give him that.

I'm going to bump this thread because blatant self-promotion is fun! And if you saw last year's Eurovision, it's a perfectly acceptable past time in Lithuania.

My fanfic is called Of a Thousand and is really just a test-run to see how I get accepted before I post one with the working title The Endless Road (I know where you sleep, so don't be copying it). Basically, I asked myself what would happen if River had graduated from the Academy when Simon busted her out. So I created two new characters: one a finished product of the Academy, and the other a new pilot for Serenity who tells the story. So far it's gone to six parts, I suspect there may be only one or two more left before the ending ...
