hi, i'm considering writing saffron into a future fic - a very enjoyable and layered character as was on the show.. any thoughts on the character for me?

She's a tough one because she is so complex and twisted. She steals not for the money, but for the rush of stealing, and she doesn't care who she screws (literally and figuratively) in her path. In fact, she prides herself on pulling the wool over peoples eyes and taking from them. You could say that she's a kleptomanic as she can't not stop stealing, and she's an Adrenaline Addict to boot, yet at the same time she is highly intelligent with Academy training (as Inara pointed out). But there's still alot more to her than I think we were given in the two episodes she was showcased in. She was probably written to be a multi-episodic and multi-season character/badguy, and the longer the show was on the more layers and mystery would have been revealed.

That probably doesn't help you, but when I had her seek revenge on Mal & Co, I wrote Saffron full of hate but laying on the sweet voice to taunt Mal. I always felt she would be enraged with being outfoxed. And so the first chance to get back at Mal, she'd do it.

Ash

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

There's some great tidbits about Saffron as a reoccuring character in the Firefly Official Companion II
Quote:

If it had been allowed to go its way for a couple of seasons, my guess is that Saffron would constantly come back, always fuck them over, but almost affectionately. Saffron and Mal would appreciate each other for their bombastic, crazy misdeeds, and that relationship would tease its way along through the episdoes, so that there could be moments where Inara would almost be jealous.

I would have liked to see where they took that.

By the way, the Official Companions to the show and the Visual Companion to the movie are all excellent resources, and I would advise any fanfic writer to pick up copies of all three. Tasty scraps of canon material to fill in some blanks, and lots of pretty pictures and details about weapons. And of course the full shooting scripts, which are always nice to refer to.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Ahhh, see as someone that doesn't have the Official Companion Book, I totally missed out on that and just went with the creative liscence. Therefore I need to buy the books obviously.

*So yeah, if you're looking for canon don't take everything I wrote to heart*

Oh, I thought you had some excellent insights into Saffron, and your assesment of her character is actually pretty true to canon, I just thought I'd put out what I had on where it might have gone.
I would still definitely suggest the books, of course. There's really an amazing amount of backstory in the few pages not devoted to scripts and pics and such, and some of the things in the scripts that didn't make the final episodes are very interesting as well.

well i appreciated both sets of insights here.
i'm intrigued myself to see if i can bring in a little of saffron's back story -
her academy training/her combat skills -
because there's room there to explore...

but more importantly just the different kinds of strengths she has...
"and i won't tell them how easy it was to get the gun out of your holster"...LOL

attitude wise -
and because tho 'bad' she is presented as appealing to the viewer,

she reminds me in some ways of Faith.

anyone else have a view?

No worries, I was just referencing to what I put below about the revenge stuff. My Saffron went for the jugular when she came after Mal & Co, and I was just trying to say that people might want to avoid the uber-evil Saffron. She's bad, but if anyone read my piece they'd see I made her superbitch, which doesn't exactly fall into the canon your snippet from the book gives. No one is really SUPERevil in the Firefly verse (don't get me started with some of the Gabe Tam writing out there lol), and Saffron's plenty bad, but she posesses a certain art to her twisted ways as well as the admiration your quote mentioned.

Of course the way I shorthanded it in my previous reply did not come out well worded. So I apologize for that

Ash

I've played with the idea of Saffron as a sort of compulsive Judas. She betrays in order to prove that she was trusted, and leaves her victims alive so that they serve as proof. She manipulates everyone so that she is never really vulnerable. If you go with this mindset, she would definately go after the crew of Serenity again, to get them to trust her and then con them, just so she can prove to herself that she is the only one pulling the strings.

What I'm wondering is where are all the Mal/Saffron fanfics that should be out there? I think it's a much more interesting potential pairing than Mal/Inara. The two of them do seem to have a special sort of quirky bond. Mal's the only one who has outsmarted her, taken her back, outsmarted her again, and gotten her to open up (maybe... the sincerity of her breakdown toward the end of "Trash" is questionable).

"I refuse to submit,
To the god you say is kind.
I know what's right, and it is time,
It's time to fight, and free our minds!

Our spirits were forged in snow and ice,
To bend like steel forged over fire.
We were not made to bend like reed,
Or to turn the other cheek!"

Going to jump in very quickly here, since I'm working on something now that has Saffron in it. (Not published yet.)

I'm fascinated by the fact that she seems to be a 'rogue' Companion. And I've wondered what her breaking point was. If you think about it, the three major Companions we've met in the series are Nandi, Saffron and Inara. None of whom have stayed put in the system.

"I lived my life in the maiden house, waiting to be married off for trade. I seen my sistren paired off with ugly men, vicious or blubberous, men with appetites too unseemly to speak on..."

How much truth was in that? (I know Inara says that Companions choose their clients, but I'm fairly sure there are some very powerful people with nasty little secrets, who can be accomodated by the Guild...)

But anyway, she's got the whole wiles thing down to an art. So I'll go with Schooner on the idea that she's got something to prove, if only to herself.

cool! Both you (S.A.) and Schooner have visions of saff that make real sense - and yet are 'different'.

I'm working on Saff piece as well (tho it's still in development stages coz of bloody 'About Face' turning into About Bloody Time!) so i'll be glad to compare characters...

i'm sort of interested in putting Saffron under stress, testing her out. Probably keeping the back story a blur - i'm keen on how differently (or NOT!) she reacts to circumstances, danger etc than Mal or whoever she is with.

What are her vulnerable points - what do we see of her if she has to overcome them - perhaps for no obvious gain... Definitely a fascinating character.

y'know S.A., it may be sad but - sometimes i dream we are all in a big locked room getting real with the donuts - and breaking stories and arcs for the next season! ach well..

make my day Shiny!

The thing I like most about Saffron is that we get just convinced that we're seeing her vulnerable side then... nope. Not it. She's playing a game again. There's a similarity to Jayne, in that she's so damned tough and we're not quite sure what's at the core of her.

Now, it's just me, but I hope that continues. I hope it's a a looong time before she breaks down and shows the real YoSafbridge. I like her as the slippery eel that no one can figure out.

But please, wytchcroft, chip away at her freely!

My guess is that once you get through all the games and defenses and misdirections, what you'd see at the core of YoSafBridge is...nothing. I don't think she even has a clue of who she really is outside of her cons, and that emptiness might just be what pushes her to the next game.

LOL! i'm not likely to go THAT far! ha ha! god no - wouldn't be our Saff if i made her someone else - just maybe put her in unusual situations - she's a hall of mirrors - that's why i like her..

OK, that's somewhat of a relief. I was picturing Saffron finally driven to her wit's end: "Hold me, Jayne - I'm really a delicate little flower lost in a big scary world!"

I think my own imagination is my biggest problem LOL!

I would love to see the tables turned with Saffron though. She has sort of had the upper hand both time we see her in canon.

Maybe even a twist of some of the poetry she espoused. "From all the eyes on all the worlds those are two that I will never forget." as Mal pulls his gun on an unsuspecting Saffron? (and make that sound more poetic.)

And maybe even let her win. Or am I way too off base with that?

I'm new on the boards and I've been lurking for a while, but I had to jump in because I wanted to second this excellent analysis. It also jibes with something Christina Hendricks said in the Companion about how Saffron plays her cons so completely that she almost needs to convince herself for each "role". I'm also very glad the subject is getting tossed around for a fanfic, because she's one of my favorite characters and there's a serious lack of fic for her. Which brings me to my next point...

I recently read a very interesting ficlet about Mal/Saffron, but something about the conclusion didn't ring true to me, and I was inspired to take it in a different direction. However, I haven’t written creatively since high school, and I don’t know the protocol for posting, finding a beta, etc. Any suggestions/direction would be greatly appreciated!

if you are really nervous - post into your blog page - and then invite comments.
you can place an add for a beta in this forum if you need one..
but don't let the lack of it stop you writing!
i've had technical troubles with correction software
but - if i got too self conscious about all that then I would stop writing
and where's the FUN in that?

look forward to your post!

I think that's a pretty acurate analisis of Yo-Saff-Bridge, and one that fits all the facts. Maybe you could write a fic about that?

So you shoot her with the Lassiter that you stole from her, and fetch the money from her burning corpse! Oops, I forgot the Lassiter doesn't work! So maybe you shoot her with the gun that you so easily got out of her holster?

Maybe you could do that in a fic? Like, maybe you could have someone from our world get transported to the Firefly universe, and they do that? That would be pretty interesting.

Just a random idea from your fellow blabber-mouth, insane Browncoat.
