seems like now might be a good time!

gather round the camp fire and tell as to why you like fics on this site - how important have they been to you - what has worked well, what has has fan fiction added to the 'verse?

i'll kick off with two things -

1) As someone who can't always articulate an argument, theme or idea (notion might be a better FF word) too well...
but often gets inspired by the posting threads -
fan fiction allows me a voice to articulate and explore things in my own way - and get feedback!:)

2) reading a really good fic gives me almost the same thrill as watching the dvd of the show! i mean it - there have been (and still are) some great writers here!

but more - fics take the verse and play with it - i've had my own character prejudices smashed and my view of the shows 'format' greatly broadened - i've seeen characters from firefly do shakespeare! meet the pirates of the carribean!! become asassins (for one side or another)! scoundrels - heroes - i've seen minor characters like Nandi and Badger become fleshed out - and i finally got to meet Saffron again!

i've seen Mal's childhood and war history played out in tense and gripping adventure...

and

now

over to the next poster!

don't be blue - celebrate the brown!

i love this site - love the fics!

what a nice thread! I love fic and write fic because there just needed to be more to the 'verse. I've noticed many writers mention, myself included, they've only been able to write firefly, most other backgrounds are just too fleshed out. Firefly can be such a blank canvas for us to play with...err...paint with.

What a great thread! I almost have the opposite experience, when writing a fic leads to long discussion threads, but the same idea is true: I write to explore ideas. The more I write, the more I think, and the more fic ideas I have. Writing lets me get all those character insights that I get from watching the series/movie and reading threads out of my head and into a much prettier (hopefully) format than my ponderings.

CHARACTER EXPLORATION! Mainly for Inara. She's a mystery. We know so little about HER and the Guild... there's so much possibility there. After watching the show, I wanted to know more about her and there's some great writers who really delve into that. Phaedra and Mal4Prez among others.

I also love reading about Mal and Shadow. It's nice to see him set in a more innocent, carefree time. It makes his tragedy all the more... tragic. LOL

"Can you, for a moment, imagine how depressing it is to teach one thousand years of masculine ineptitude? Why do you think there are so few women historians? I'll tell you why. Because history is not such a frolic for women as it is for men... History is a commentary on the various and continuing incapabilities of men. History is women following behind with a bucket and a mop." - Alan Bennett, "The History Boys"

Great thread you got there! I'll join in :) I just wanna say that the show and the film left us begging for more and I think that somewhat, ff satisfies that lust. I'm more on the Inara character because as EmpireX said, she's a real mistery to us and I find her relationship with Mal one of the bases of the story. I love firefly ff and I don't think I'm alone here :) Besides, why would we leave Serenity?

Ditto, ditto, and ditto.

The characters in Firefly are truly inspiring. There are so many mysteries and nuances that are just begging to be explored.

I've been in the Star Wars fandom for a very long time - since 1980 to be exact, but I was never compelled to write fan fic.

DESERTGIRL

When I first discovered Firefly I watched the entire series in one day. As I finished the last of the DVD’s I was left with a longing for more that I have rarely felt in my life and never over a TV show. Truthfully I hate TV; I almost never watch, I read. When I discovered the Blue Sun Room, I was in seventh heaven. I can read and get to hang out more in my favorite ‘verse. The BSR gives me my firefly fix.

I have read some of the best science fiction I have ever read in the BSR. Many fics are better than some of the published works out there. Authors take such time and care to create wonderful stories that can suck you in and force you to stay up till the wee hours of the morning.

The BSR also gave me the shove I needed to try writing. Writing fiction has become my new passion, mostly because it can be a tremendous emotional release. I love having our BDH’s work out all my problems for me, if I write it I can let it go. I also love the social commentary I can leave in science fiction that is just too raw when it is discussed in the here and now.

And finally I have met several close friends in the BSR. People who live on the other side of the country, but whose friendships I have come to treasure as much as the girlfriends I see every day.

I just logged in after a few days absence to find out about the BSR tragedy. It amazes me how it is so easy to take things for granted. I feel a deep pain in my gut that someone could damage something as beautiful as the BSR I morn its loss but it will rise again. After all that is what us Browncoats do.

So to all the people out there whose work has filled my heart with joy over the last few years, thank you. Repost your stuff so we can all enjoy it once again.

I've made friends with people not only across the continent but across oceans. With them I've gotten into spirited "discussions" both in threads and with IM.

Firefly/Serenity also gave me the urge to write. I've never written any fiction before this and it's been a fantastic learning experience.

My brain has also been invaded by a young, much more innocent Mal and his Ma. Joss only gave us one line in OMR about her, but my imagination has taken off and I can just imagine how she raised Mal by herself. It greatly effected the man we see in Firefly.
