I'm sure this has been previously adressed and I've heard several conflicting versions, but I need to know the "official" name for the "Alliance" for a fic I'm working on and figured -- Hey, where better to ask?

How's about some help, fellow Browncoats?

Thanks, folks.

The 'official' sources say it's the Anglo-Sino Alliance (since it's the union of the United States and China leading the exodus from Earth that was). However, in 'Ariel' we also heard it referred to as 'the Union of Allied Planets'. My scientific wild-assed guess? 'Anglo-Sino Alliance' was the pre-war name, and after what is laughingly called unification, the name was changed to 'Union of Allied Planets'. That be the case, might just be for tradition's sake that folk still call it the Alliance. Just my guess, so write as you wish.

Thanks, Steamer. That fits with what I've heard and read.

One question, 'though. We often hear references to the "Feds" or "Federals" and this left me wondering whether the post-war name was "Federation of Allied Planets".

Anybody else wanna throw in their 2 cents worth?

I think the Feds are the cops--they work for the Alliance, of course.

Interesting... They sure did look like troopers (soldiers) in "The Train Job","Bushwhacked" and
elsewhere. I know there's a reference to the police as "Interpol", which leads me to suspect the term "Feds" might actually refer to "Federal Troops" or "Federal Army."

Anybody else into the pool?

Me again, but consider this:
* The RL "United States of America" has a "Federal Bureau of Investigation"

* In a dictatorship, there often isn't a real hard and fast line between the regular police, the secret police, and the military.

And remember the beginning of Objects in Space, when Simon is telling Kaylee about being naked on the statute of Hippocrates. Kaylee says, "So the feds came," and Simon replies, "There were no feds. Until I started singing." That sounds more to me like the local cops responding to a drunk & disorderly than a military operation!

I read somewhere that the Alliance military doubles as the federal police force in the system - each planet may have its own law-enforcement agency, but the Alliance has jurisdiction wherever it goes. In 'Bushwhacked' and 'Safe', for instance, the Alliance commanders are empowered to cite Mal & co. for failure to be properly registered, and arrest them for no particular reason.

Could also be a case of "Feds" being what you call "the people who come to arrest you," regardless of what their particular (dis)organization is called.

Interesting observating. :) The "United Federation of Planets" belongs to a different 'Verse; so, whence the 'Feds'? What 'Federation' do they belong to? Federation. "Foedus". In the Latin. "A union comprising a number of partially self-governing states or regions united by a central ('federal') government." Of course, Federation is a form of state: it don't necessarily have to show up in a title.

Come to think of it, it's highly probable that the Alliance IS regulated as as Federation: "Unite the planets under one rule, so that everybody can be interfered with or ignored equally." So, Londinium may well have a King (though that was probably more a figure of speech), but it really seems to make a great deal of sense for all the Allied planets to form a Federation, instead of seeing all local forms of government replaced.

Another excellent observation. That sorta puts the kaibash on the whole Federation proof thingy. :) Though I'd still say they're a Federation.
