working on a rough fic at mo' withe setting as a trailer park in space -
the idea being that not everyone could afford the move to a terra formed colony - or have the necessary work skills.

maybe decdets of the poorer end of the exodus from earth that was.

does this sound plausible given the 'verse as we know it?

You mean, they're always in space? Because with the necessity of operating life support systems that would be free on a planet that would seem to be more expensive a place to live.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

Robert Heinlein had something kind of similar to what you're talking about in his book, Rolling Stones (or Stone - can't remember which). There's mining out in the asteroid belt, and in addition to the actual miners there are small communities of "support" people living in converted ships, run-abouts, etc. Not Reaver-types either - real, down-home (or down-asteroid), coffee-drinkin', space-minin' folk who vote and watch TV just like us. It's in the latter half or third of the book (ain't exactly a thick read, in any case). It's not a major focus of the story, but Heinlein tended to stick pretty rigorously to the technically plausible...if not the immediately possible...

It was non-stop with the propane guy when we got here!

Like the drifter colony in Titan A.E. --bunch of ships bolted together until they become one big space station.

There's one in Star Wars too; Zirtran's Anchor ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Zirtran%27s_Anchor_%28space_station%29)

One 'verse possibility: the people are indentured workers brought to an "almost ready" planet to be the first wave of colonists, only here was a "slight miscalculation" in the terraformers calculations and the planet will not be habitable for another couple of years. The company keeps the colonists in orbit, waiting to dump them on the surface. Of course, the release date keeps getting pushed back (Think Microsoft on a planetary scale )

thanks for these posts - schooner comes close to my way of thinking... but the expense issue is very valid - i'll make sure i deal with it (at least plausibly).

haven't seen titan a.e. for so long i can't remember it - but that sounds a little similar - i may steal some atmosphere from Outland too! heh heh.

Or maybe fleets of ships that are hire-out whatevers- mercs, miners, etc. that can't afford big ships but have a lot of people that work together. They could have the specialized units in different ships.

I can't name a lot of proffesions (sp?) that could do that, because it's morning, but I hope that helps you

Ohh, nice big shiny ads that promise a clean, healthy way of life in the open air for all those folks stuck in cubicle hell on polluted worlds...

It's a good way of shifting unruly elements of your population, too. Work Makes You Free...

And instead, you end up on some mudball with erratic weather, and people you can't stand.

Of course, the Alliance might just put it on Prime Time, where you can vote the colonist you least like out of the airlock...
