Hello, I think that Firefly is ripping off Outlaw Star (an anime) in a big way, there is a scene where a girl is in a case, naked. There is an exact scene in Outlaw Star like that, also the whole premise of the show is ripped off and so is the characters. So please sign this petition to cancel Firefly on Fox,
http://www.petitiononline.com/firefly/petition.html

Thank you for your time

Satsuma,

A few points to consider -

1) Online petitions never work. You want people to take notice you're gonna need some dead trees and ink.

2) How many complete episodes of Firefly did you watch before you came to the conclusion that they are identical? Oh I see...

3) What on earth makes you think that a Firefly website is a good place to recruit anti-Firefly signatures for your petition? You having any luck selling fridges to those eskimos?

4) Anime is notorious for copying ideas from previous movies/shows.

5) To quote a very wise man "there's nothing new under the sun". Everything's been done before - it's just a question of giving it your own unique flavour. Joss is a past master at taking cliches and turning them on their head. If Firefly does bear any relation to Outlaw Star in outline you can bet it won't by the time it's on the screen.

Have a nice day.

And I can verify that...seeing as how I own an anime OVA (Sol Bianca) where a boy stows away on a space ship in a large crate. I think this came out...in the early 90's? Way before Outlaw Star. The whole stowaway idea is not a new one, it's been done before, it'll been done again.

Nothing new under the sun indeed. So what's with all these posts about how Firefly rips off things? Probably because it's the most unique thing out there right now, people feel the need to bring it down?

Or maybe it's just the same DA bazoars. The grammar would certainly support that.

Good luck drumming up support at FireflyFans.net.

36 signatures so far. Out of millions of viewers, that's a pretty significant voting block. I'm worried. Though "cancel" is misspelled, the petition must be taken seriously. 14 year-olds have so much clout in the television business. After all, they managed to keep DA on the -- oh...

Has anyone else seen the other ludicrous petitions on that site? Oh, the stupidity!

Aaaaaaah! My life ends now! I can't go on!

I just found out that basically everything ever written is somehow attributed to The Odyssey, Beowulf, The Five Rings (Go Rin No Sho), Dante's Inferno, and The Bible. Oh, and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which is influenced by Narnia, which is influenced by....

Me thinks people need to just heed these words:

"Just repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"

Yeah, Ringwraith is right. Hell, everyone is always accusing Whedon of ripping off something or another, only to find out that Joss has never actually seen the shows that he's supposedly ripping off. Ex: Farscape.

Like JW said, you either watch TV or you make it. With 5 shows in production, it's amazing he ever sleeps, much less watches televison.

Again, I give you the Pokeman example. Or Macross/Gundam/insert-random-mecha-series-here. Or EVERY SENTAI SERIES EVER CREATED EVER. When other anime does it it, its ok. Bah.

And having a similar scene doesn't make it a ripoff. I seem to remember The Producers and Schindler's List both having scenes with Nazis. That doesn't mean Spielberg was ripping Mel Brooks off.

Besides, who cares if it is a ripoff? Spreading anime to the masses is a GOOD THING.

INARASNEWTOY - I lovelovelove your quote. Joaquin Phoenix is the hottest thing on legs And even if you don't agree... Well, Sings was still a damn good movie.

Joaquin said in an interview, he likes his girlfriends to call him kitten. Hee Hee.

I will certainly agree that the person starting this thread could use some work on his/her spelling, but I have to admit I had the exact same thought when I saw that promo. In fact, ever since I first read about the premise of Firefly as sci-fi cum Western I had been worried that Joss might just be ripping off Outlaw Star or (the far superior) Cowboy Bebop. Having seen an episode of FF now I'm encouraged that this appears to be untrue. OTOH, FF's got a long ways to go to catch up to Bebop in terms of quality. I'll give it a few episodes before making a final judgment, though.

Seriously, Space/Western is a valid fusion, and I can name at least 6 examples that came before Firefly. Firefly is just the first live action one I've seen.

Hell, THREE animated Space Westerns were gracing the air in 1986.

* BraveStarr - Typically Filmmation (same guys as the old He-Man) with the bad animation, cheezy characters, but occasional redeeming scene or ep.

* Sabre Rider & the Star Sherriffs - OK, it was a BADLY edited and translated verion of Star Musketeers Bismarck, but by American standards of the era, it was pretty good - continuity, characters, and mecha.

* Galaxy Rangers - I run the fanfic archive/best known page for this. 4-person cast. Now while I wonder who was a fan (GR's creator directed the pilot of X-Files, and there are some passing resemblances between GR and Firefly, there's no way in hell I'd call it a rip-off.

(The resemblance, BTW, is mostly in the look of the "border" planets, and the bad luck of the captains on both shows. Galaxy Rangers ALSO had its pilot shelved by suits who thought it was too slow, debuting with the third episode.)

I'd hate for FF to suffer the same fate as GR - well-made, mature, and a "labor of love," turned to a financial disaster by the ignorance of its distributors. I don't want Joss Wheadon sitting with Robert Mandell toasting "what could have been."

Let's celebrate the genre's new baby, not trash it.

So did Firefly have penis ships? All I remember about Outlaw Star is the penis ships.

Outlaw Star isn't very popular. It also isn't very good. Besides the girl in the box, there's nothing in common. Their characters are vastly different than Joss'. I fail to see the likenesses that would piss said fan off. Do you want to trademark space or something?

Besides Firefly is far more interesting.
[Outlaw Star fans accuse every show set in space of ripping their show off. See Cowboy Bebop. They always say that's a rip off of Outlaw Star. Again, I don't see how. ] Futhermore Gene Starwind couldn't lace Mal's boots. Animated or not, chief.

Woah, Setsuna!

So FF 'borrowed' (heavily) (very heavily) from Anime. The show and movie can still stand on their own if you just accept the heavy anime influence in it and enjoy it for what it is. I was also livid to see Anime shows ripped off so readily at first, but the FF writers aren't the only ones ripping other Asian media. Most of Tarantino's films are influenced by 70's 'sploitation flicks and Hong Kong cinema, but that doesn't make Kill Bill a bad movie. Of course, Quentin always says up front that he borrows from HK cinema, especially for the character of the bride.

Just because the writers don't acknowledge their debt to Anime doesn't mean the show and movie are reprehensible. I'd rather watch a show that rips off Bebop and Outlaw than one that rips off the Jessica Simpson Variety Hour!
