I'm really, really hoping this trolling blows over soon, but until it does, I thought I'd make a few suggestions to fans.

1). Don't reply to them. Trolls feed off of the attention. "Hey look, they read my post. Boy I got them. I'll do it again just to make sure!"

2). Don't insult, slam, mock, or retaliate. They will be encourage by this action and will have to reply (insult you further, continue tirade, or whatever trolls do). They will come back again. (and again, and again....)

3). Notify the webmaster if you see a troll post, or any post that is offensive to you or that you think is inapproiate. I would advise people to email Haken (haken@fireflyfans.net) or even notify@fireflyfans.net

4). Relax Trolls go away eventually, so there is no need to get really worked up over them. Just continue reading and posting, but most importantly enjoy the show. Firefly is going to be great.

Tieka,
Glad that usenet taught me something useful

I think there is a sure-fire way to eliminate trolling. Here is my plan...

1.) We need a strong group of moderators to watch the forums and field questions from posters. These people will serve to set an example for the other postere, in turn preserving an area of constructive conversation and debate.

2.) A list of rules should be made. These rules should include the *very basics* of forum etiquette. They should be very basic and non-confrontational, allowing for disagreement, but not for hostility.

3.) The posters should not take trollish comments to heart. They do not deserve our attention. Firefly fans will have to deal with the backlash of scorned Dark Angel fans, and we must set an example of maturity in our fandom, as opposed to the irrationality of aforementioned scorned and hostile fans. We must stay open-minded as well. How would we react if we get very attached to Firefly and it was cancelled? Certainly, we would be hurt and we must recognize these other fans' pain.

4.) In order to preserve the proposed rules, violators of potential rules should be punished by first being warned and given the opprotunity to edit their post, and if that does not happen, having their post deleted or their thread locked. This action should only be taken if the rule is clearly viloated, as not to infringe on the posters' opinions and freedoms.

5.) Moderators and posters must encourage constructive debate and conversation. This is what will ultimately make or break this forum. It is what will make our community stand out amongst all of the other communities bound to rise.

6.) Trolls should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

How does this plan sound? Is it safe to say everyone is in agreement?

Agreed. The worst thing you can do is feed a troll. Of course, having fun at the troll's expense is something else entirely, but that's mostly a USENET thing.

If the board is moderated and they can't act like idiots, too bad.

It's disappointing how many people get online and lack basic netiquette. There should be a course you have to take when you first get online that teaches you how to act in a proper manner. Of course if this happened then there'd only be a few thousand people online.

Well, just because a board is moderated doesn't mean trolls will not be idiots. If they don't break any rules, then posts cannot be edited, and hillarity can still ensue.

I really hope they go away. I do think more moderation might be in order. Basically, a post is breaking the rules if it's inflammatory. It's not censorship if you delete a post that is clearly not designed for any purpose other than outright bashing something or provoking other posters. Most of the Dark Angel threads (save for the few intelligent ones - thank you to those DA fans) would qualify.

I'm not thrilled about trolls, but these may not be true trolls. I don't even watch Dark Angel, & I find myself being sympathetic. The DA fans have their hands tied--Fox really put them in a bad situation. So I think DA people are posting nasty things out of desperation. It's wrong, but I think I can understand where it comes from.

and that's true of most social situations- when something bad happens, most people tend to seek someone to blame, and in this case, Firefly was the unfortunate show that was given DA's supposed timeslot. By the way, I hope the timeslot doesn't kill Firefly, because that was partly(and partly the storyline for s2) why DA wasn't given a second chance, the ratings were very poor on that night apparently.

as for trolls, the only problems you'll have will be the disgruntled DA fans, and mostly Cher, or ChertheFireflySlayer as she now calls herself. Seriously, ignore her, don't feed her, she'll get bored and go away eventually. I'm sure she has better things to do with her time.

I'd say that Firefly should have no problem in this position. X-Files did very well on Fridays, so I have no doubt Firefly will have *some* success. Sliders succeeded for three years (albeit, somewhat shakily) on the Fridays at 8:00 position as well.

The reason DA didn't have very good ratings, I'd presume, is because it wasn't all that *good.* It didn't draw that cult-audience it needed, because it was a very mediocre show, so the ratings slowly faded away.

I'm thinking now, that Fridays might be a really good place for the show. FOX doesn't expect astronomical ratings for that night, so FF will be ruled less by them than say... a Thursday position. I believe that the good-ness of the show will draw a *big* fanbase... and we'll see it succeed.

At least, I hope this will be the case.

About the trolls: I fully think that anyone who hasn't see a show and irrationally floods our boards with inane insults and profanity is by fault a troll. I don't think it matters their circumstances because I do feel sympathy for them... but they are still creating a hostile environment that I presume we all would like to avoid.

I don't dispute they are trolls, because, as you said, if you come and post somewhere with the intention of being rude and inconsiderate about a show they know nothing about, to people who have come to discuss rational and thoughtful things about the said show, that makes you a troll.

When I first came to this site a few days ago, i did so with the intention of finding the forum and venting my anger and frustations about the DA cancellation towards the Firefly fans. But then I read a bit about the show, and thought this does look interesting, i'm not a fan (I can't be because I haven't seen a single episode yet)but it's made by Joss Whedon, and he's wicked, but I am looking forward to it reaching Australian shores. But what really turned me more than anything, was seeing what some of the trolls had already written, and I realised how wrong what I wanted to do was. When it comes right down to it, it's not Joss Whedons fault, it's not Fireflys fault, and the fans are most certainly not to blame, FOX is, it was their decision, no one elses. They'll get over it, they must have better things to do.

The people over on the DA boards came accross a cast photo for Firefly (and I must admit, it did look a bit cheesy, but the screen shots for the show look great)and they decided that Firefly looked bad, so it was a good direction to start bashing. As for Cher reading the pilot script for Firefly, she knows nothing. Scripts never look that great on paper, I remeber everyone was a bit doubtful of this years Buffy finale after reading the transcripts, they thought that Willow couldn't possibly pull of the dialogue realisticly, and look how that turned out. So anyways my point being the script shouldn't represent the outcome of the show, and Cher should know that, having had access to DA transcripts before show production.

Gee I talk too much. Basically i'm just tryin to extend the olive branch, please don't think that because of a few people, that every DA fan is going to be a troll, Cher is starting to give us a bad name.

Dark Angel and Firefly fans should unite, not fight. (I know, corny as hell)

About Cher having read the script: I highly doubt she actually did. Even if she did, she is in the minority for not liking it. Every other review of the script that I have seen has been full of flowing complements.

I like that you found the error in your ways and have become one of the first members of the community! I think everyone understands that all DA fans are not trolls. There are many that are fans of it on this site, as you're no doubt aware. They have the right to be upset, but the few that have posted inflammatory comments do not have the right to lambaste us, the fans. Those are the only real trolls we have had. Even the ones who are expressing rational opinions for their dislike of Firefly are not trolls... as they can speak rationally without insults and what not.

So true. But I think that hating Firefly because it replaced DA is hardly rational. I just don't see how you could hate anything you haven't seen yet.

But I guess everyone has a right to their own opinion as long it is expressed in a decent way, without inflammatory remarks. I'm with the program now.

First off, I can asure you that Cher did indeed read the script. I haven't read it though, so I can't tell you if it's good or not but I don't really care.

The second thing I wanted to say is that not all the people coming here to bash Firefly (well they might of not made their way here yet) are sent from Cher's. There was never a link up to this site from their's till either today or yesterday but, if you want to check out it out, another site that is just as bad... or worse (most of the people there are newbies) is http://www.darkangeltv.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

The nice thing about that board is that at least there seems to be some level headed people on that board who realize bashing people's show on another board is a waste of time, so that's cool.

It's a weird phenomenon, that only seems to spring up with sci-fi shows where the fans seem to feel it has to be one or another. Ever seen people debate the ye old Star Wars v.s. Star Trek thing?

Sci-fi is so disrespected as a genre that you'd think it's fans would be more united or something and support new shows. Really, if one sci-fi show does well it can actually help other sci-fi shows and sci-fi shows in general because it proves to the networks it's still a viable genre.

I've spent the past several days looking at different forums to see what sort of rules they have. Basically they are all the same, but the exact wording depends on the type of people in a forum. Based on all of this, and with a bit of editing, fluffing, folding, splindling,....etc, I have come up with the following. What do you think?

Tieka, sharing with anyone who reads this.
================================
Within these forums, you will be conversing with real people. Please be considerate and polite, just as you would be if you were talking face to face with another person. Post constructive and informative messages/questions to the forum. Healthy and humorous debate is encouraged!

Please keep in mind that this site is also frequented by minors. Posts will not be moderate unless there is offensive language (which will be removed). People who routinely make such posts will face loss of forum privileges. The forum is a place where you should be able to voice your opinions and ideas without offending others.

Q:  What is "vulgarity and profanity"?

A:  We all know what these terms mean. Vulgarity and profanity will not be tolerated.

Violation of the following will also result in loss of forum privileges:

--Any illegal activity

--Posts that support or espouse hatred towards another individual or group based upon any criteria (including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, etc.)

--No Flaming (personal abusive attacks intended to incite, degrade, make fun of
another person or their ideas with no positive outcome.) Additionally, flaming of
moderators, either on or off list for their actions on the list, is not permitted.
Use good manners, and differences can easily be avoided without things degrading to
a flamewar. Attacks include name-calling and
do no good except get the list upset. Flaming and other forms of
harassment on OR offlist are grounds for removal from the list.
Direct your comments to the idea, not the person and always be
willing to "agree to disagree".

--No Spam (Sales pitches, requests for Aid to Children, chain letters,
Business opportunities, GetRichQuick schemes, MLM opportunities, etc).

--No Advertising of any kind on the list.

(Or the really legal way!)

Post are not allowed where they:

* are unlawful, threatening, obscene, vulgar, pornographic, profane or indecent including any communication that constitutes (or encourages conduct that would constitute) a criminal offense, gives rise to civil liability or otherwise violates any local, state, national or international law;
* improperly assume or claim the identity, characteristics or qualifications of another person;
* are for purposes of spamming;
* contain any virus or other harmful component;
* are libelous, or an invasion of privacy or publicity rights or any other third party rights; or
* are for commercial purposes or contain advertising or are intended to solicit a person to buy or sell products or services

Strong moderation on a board can help if the board is getting relentlessly spammed.

LOL.

The thing is, mob mentality doesn't exactly... work when the mob is so small. I'd guess that there are at most 5000 hardcore DA fans... the rest of the watchers are just casual fans who have no interest in the workings of the behind-the-scenes stuff.

That's what makes me laugh the most... these 5000 hardcores think they can actually get anything accomplished! They thing they are important enough to offset the... what... 8 million viewers DA lost when it move to Fridays? They even think that they can offset the guaranteed 4 million viewers who will likly watch Firefly.

I like those odds. I'm going to be laughing so hard when Firefly does hugely well, better than DA was doing. Gosh, i'm a hardcore DA fan, and even I don't care anymore, DA slipped so much in season 2 it was like pulling the plug on your deathly ill granny. DA may have picked up in season 3, but the truth is, it probably would have went more downhill, Cameron really stuffed it up. I love the show, but it ain't coming back.

Has anybody else noticed that the DA trolls only come out on weekends?

Now if they wanted to show thier great solidarity and immense numbers of fans they should be doing something. My idea---At the time that Dark Angel would air in your timezone, ***insert massive online activity*** That would show your devotion to the hour that was DA. IF there are enough of these dedicated fans, they could bring down the internet and crash the system.

Too bad there are only a couple trolls, and they aren't allowed on thier computers during the school week.

TYLOR

Hmmm, I think the thing most people don't realize is the difference between a troll and a plain old jerk. Some of the trolls I've read here are pathetic attempts to troll, and some of them are just "I'm a jerk and I'm posting stuff, look at me." In the case of a troll you aren't supposed to know it is a troll until the person tells you "You have been trolled." Trolls, real ones, are actually more annoying because they are sneaky.

So far I've only read two "troll" posts, one was just an "I'm a jerk, look at me" the other was also an "I'm a jerk" post, but it was also a pitiful attempt to stir up animosity between firefly fans and another show's fans.

I agree that the best thing to do with jerks and trolls is ignore them, but I see no problem posting "This is a troll" in a thread to warn people that it is a troll thread. (Just never get into an arguement with these people, since they have no opinions worth considering, and you can't really tell what their real opinions are anyway.)

I agree with the whole test thing. If you can't be civil, I don't see why you should be allowed in message boards and such. I try to be as polite and civil as possible when responding, it's very easy.

That's all.

Sadly, I suspect it's as much a social thing as a net thing, although the freedom of anonymity gives mendacious morons far more encouragement than they deserve.

Regarding Dark Angel, we followed it with curiosity and enjoyment, but I thought the end of the second season took it as far as it needed to go anyway. There didn't seem to be enough mystery left after that point to sustain it in a non "action-repetitive" way. But maybe that's just 'cause we were among the 'casuals'!

Well, since there's a right to privacy, you can't get rid of anonymus posts. And I didn't know I was signed in, so I've done a few anonymus posts. Gorram.

Check the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION, dear buddy, unless Trolls provocate a PHYSICAL, fight, or INTENTIONALLY, start a verbal fight, then they can say what ever they want. And most of the time, YOU CONFORMISTS, stasrt everything, telling us we should do things this way, and that, it's wrong and it just what the ALLIANCE would do, LIMITING OUR FREEDOMS.

Jameron, you're an idiot, plain and simple. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say anything about your "free speech" rights on the internet, in a privately-owned and -funded website.

The Constitution says that THE GOVERNMENT can't make laws abridging your free speech. It doesn't say diddly about Haken enforcing his own rules on his own website. You and all the other little kiddies out there whining about your "rights" being infringed don't know what the hell you're talking about.

You agreed to certain terms when you joined this site. YOU agreed to them. YOU agreed to abide by the rules here, lax as they are, and now that has proven to be too much for you. You can post your garbage if you want, but don't whinge about it when it gets tossed in the dustbin of Troll Country.

And if you really feel the need to blather on for hours about Rihanna, maybe you should find a website devoted to her. I'm sure they'd be glad to discuss all things her with you.

I'm working with a windows 98 operating system, so the only sites that i can find for Rihanna, take a LONG time to load. And your right about the constitution, i was just "just yankin' yer chain" as you so rightly put it.

Why are you feeding the trolls? Have things on this site become that boring?

Since this is already at the top of the list, I figure I can't do any harm by responding, but I won't after this and hopefully it'll slide away again.

I'm just curious what's been going on that's created such a fuss? I can see one person being out of hand, but I must have missed an awful lot.

We've been discussing moderators in RWE because of one person who deluges the forum with idiotic topics and pushes everything else down the way. The consensus is that moderators, being human, are subjective and usually end up causing more trouble than they prevent, and WE at least don't want them, no matter what. I agree with others that the easiest and best way is to discourage trolls and/or people who post just for attention and to provoke is just to ignore them; not respond so their thread slips to the bottom and away. That's all.

RIVERDANCER

See, the problem is that he was basically ignored for awhile, and started a deluge of pointless, pointless threads, and got more annoying with every new post or response. So I poked him with a stick. Now he's all hurt feelings and living up even more to the categorization of troll. I shouldn't have poked him, but ignoring him seemed to not be working, and I've seen annoyances driven off by mockery in the past, so I thought maybe I should give it a try. Perhaps it will work. Perhaps not. It was kind of fun to flex my mockery muscles.

Am i really like Riverlove, or PIRATENWES, or that titanic twit DUN? Well if you think that, then who better to have on your side to piss the Trolls off. I've already started to go after their old posts, insulting them, AND ONLY THEM. So i say again, who do you think is more annoying?
