With nothing better to do I decided to set this OOC Firefly RPG Thread up so we can banter about the spin - off to The Adventures in GunRunning Role Playing Game thread

the GunRunning Thread is in its 24th stage and you can read the in character stuff at http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=7848

The current out of character GR Thread is also in its 24th stage at
http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=7910

The posts devoted to the spinoff (called Dragonfly: Procrustean Karma) start here at

http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=3530

and continue on and on and on in

http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=17&t=7042

The GR: NextGen series will start on/in the planet/ moon/ town of New Hokkaido as soon as the characters that are currently in the GunRunning Thread find themselves there.

Hopefully soon a description of New Hokkaido will be placed here, etc

Finally ... here is a bio for the character I will play in the GR: The NextGen ... err ... Dragonfly campaign http://www.freewebs.com/mjspages/tempfireflypage.htm

Hi, thought I'd take the opportunity to give a more detailed description of the character I've invented. It's yet to be approved by the directors but hopefully they'll like it.
Graham Calbrax, mid-thirties. Tall, dark and not-so-handsome. Flies a shuttle shaped like a scarab beetle. Wears a lot of denim and usually either a brown leather trenchcoat or a black leather jacket. Carries simple weapons, a pistol and a dagger, but is proficient in their use. He was conspicuously absent during the war. He once worked as an archaeologist for the Alliance's terraforming devision. This job led to him visiting Earth-that-was and accidently uncovering some secrets which turned him away from the Alliance and into a fugitive. He refuses to talk about what he discovered.
I've been trying to come up with an interesting reason for him to be at New Hokkaido, but it's kinda difficult cos I don't know anything about the place. Have the details of the planet been established? If anyone knows anything, post it here. I'll reward you with an emoticon kiss. Thanx

Reminds me sorta of an 'Ace' Rimmer/ Indiana Jones type without the looks *L* .. works fer me .. our crew can't all look like fashion plates .... by the way the players have all been choosing actors/ actresses from cinema and tv to represent their characters .. you may wanna root around the net and find a pic of someone that resembles your description .. I'm not one of the Direktors of this spin-off so I can't say you have to .. this just makes it more interesting

just thought of a random actor for you to use to represent Graham ... Fred Ward of Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins and Tremors I and II fame ...

this is a picture of Fred Ward from Remo Williams ...
(reconnect this boken up link >>>>>>>>> http://badmovies.org/ movies/remo/remo7.jpg
to see the pic if you can't see the picture above ... this actor was in his early 40s at the time but you get the idea)

hmmm ... well theres probably more on NH to do than just the pool tourney (which is the reason the characters from the GunRunners thread will come) thats happening in the future.

Crime, gambling on cards, intrigue, land wars, shotgun weddings, wars between sheepherders vs cattlemen come to mind off the top of my head as things to do in the 'verse (note: a simple western cliche can be made interestin' in space .. now they're spacecliches).

as to why your character is even on NH .... lessee ... heres two ideas ... Graham could be checking on some info he's gleaned from some source ... or could be stuck there because the guy/ gal he was counting on for some (cash) to refuel has disappeared (or both ideas could intertwine) ...

Thanx 4 the advice. You've got some good ideas there. I like the idea of him looking for one of his sources. This guy is very inquisitive. His source could have been 'disappeared'by the alliance. I was thinkin of using a picture of Marcus from Bab5, but Fred Ward is actually closer to my original idea.
Oh, and don't worry: no kissies *firm manly handshake*

These fellas sound just a wee bit anxious, don't they?

Pumaman, we've been chatting off and on and you never mentioned you were joining the Hitchers?

This is what I get for being MIA, isn't it?

Gotta admit, I'm a mite confused about this spin-off idea. I was looking to get involved in 'Adventures in Gunrunning' but now suddely I'm here and there's a spin-off called Dragonfly which I know nothing about.
Am I being dim?

CornCobb - don't worry about it!

Gunrunners and Dragonfly will be running together for a short time and then will split off again. Some of the characters are making a guest appearance during the upcoming mini-series that starts when we leave New Hokkaido and ends ... later. Those characters will be leaving at the end of the Mini. This should not affect you or CrazyHorse, does affect Merz and Pumaman.

But that is a ways down the road and I was not trying to be confusing - just trying to tie things together so we are all where we need to be, when we need to be there.

I have a feeling the "extra" hitchers will be needed

Sorry -

OK Gunrunners, Hitchers, and Chimerians - Here is New Hokkaido in a nutshell. It is intended to give you room to be creative while giving you a framework in which to work. You might want to be a little specific as to your location, but feel to make up names and descriptions to suit yourself, there is room for much there. If you are together, decide on your location and please don't confuse one another .

If you have specific questions please ask me or Capn Rahn and we will do our best.

Here is your world - have fun.

New Hokkaido

New Hokkaido is one of the Terraformed Moons. Once it was made habitable, it was discovered to have nearly the most perfect climate across it’s entire surface. That being the case, instead of becoming a place to dump immigrants to sink or swim, it became a place to build places for people to come and have fun, and spend money. Consequently it is one of the most lavish and entertaining places around. Recently it has come under Alliance backing as well and while it was patrolled and safe before (tourists needing to be kept safe to spend their coin after all) it is currently extremely well policed throughout the urban areas. Things are a bit looser on the continent set aside to grow crops and cattle to feed the hoards in the city areas. There are fish farms and some specialty/luxury crops grown as well – New Hokkaido is attempting to be as self-sufficient as their climate and setup will allow them. In this area as well, working cattle ranches have spawned a return to the “Dude Ranch” where wealthy city folk can get down and dirty and play cowboy for a time.

The major spaceport is located on the largest continent. Here also is the largest city, housing the elite Alliance presence, the local government bigwigs, and a large, popular Companion house. This being a newly constructed area it is clean, well patrolled, virtually crime free and has no real slum areas at all. Tourists, local business men and the necessary day to day functions to support them are in an older settlement at least 20 miles away, such peons as are needed to provide comforts to the elite commute from there. Somewhere between these two extremes is a lovely area of nice hotels and spas, courtesy of a hot spring. Here is the Greentree Spa, and here also is the UBA Tournament – The United Billiards Association has located their annual tournament on New Hokkaido this year and it is starting in a very few days. Every day sees more and more ships coming in, loaded with Players and their groupies, Gamblers and other followers of the high-stakes sporting world. The Press Corp has one whole hotel to themselves (and a good job to, a most annoying bunch.)

The biggest draw to New Hokkaido is the Re-Inact Faire. Originally and loosely based on a long-tradition of re-inactions of battles from Earth-that-Was, it has since grown into a multi-cultural celebration of all that was Earth-that-Was. Many eras, traditions, cultures, are represented side-by-side here - along with anything that could be thought up to support them. Clothing booths to supply you with period outfits for whatever section you are visiting, food, drink, music and other entertainment appropriate to the locale … the battlegrounds are surrounded by reproductions of the eras in which they took place. New sections are added on each year, new cultures, new battles; an ever changing kaleidoscope of human endeavor.

Given time, and a map, one can find just about anything here – inside the grounds the locals who run this place police their own areas, and very well too. Not much escapes their notice, as whole families have inhabited the same areas for years, producing the next generation of re-inacktors and support functions. Catching a thief, murderer or rapist by whatever means is grounds for a reward from the fair-wards rather than punishment, and will probably continue to be so until such time as the Alliance gets around to messing it up.

But outside the actual Faire the surrounding area is where the vices can be found, and again almost anything can be acquired there, only no maps here. You need something you ask around and hope whomever you ask will stay bought.

At this time on New Hokkaido: the weather is warm but not hot, dry and with enough breezes during the day to remain comfortable. Nights are cooler, just enough to encourage cuddling. It does rain at least once, briefly, each afternoon – but only enough to freshen the air and lay the dust. It is the perfect time of year in an almost perfect place.

And this is where Serenity is headed, to arrive within a day, more or less.

Shiny! Thanks again Merz. A possible scenario for Graham Calbrax: he has come to New Hokkaido to visit the re-inact faire, which would obviously be of interest to him (did you have me in mind when you added that part?). More importantly, he has come to visit one of the re-inacktors, who shares his interest in Earth-that-was and has some information for him. But this re-inacktor has been arrested by the feds on trumped-up charges.
What do you think?

To clarify ... I was not going to intrude on the Adventures in Gunrunning thread ... I thought the Hitchers stuff was pretty much the same thing ...

I was under the impression that I was trying to while away the hours before the Dragonfly RP starts so I started this thread ... I thought New Hokkaido (sp) would be a meeting ground for Serenity to drop off whomever and we'd get the Dragonfly stuff going, eventually ... and the Serenity would sail through the stars again with the main crew and their band of merry Hitchers leaving our spin-off to start.

Not worried when the Dragonfly stuff starts .. hopefully, reasonably soon ... I think I developed Quentin in February 2004 thinking that in the Spring or Summer we'd have the Dragonfly RP start (I spent from May, June, July and into August in a hiatus from the net at home so I'm glad it didn't start then).

The other alternative I have to RP is if we get an independent Hitchers thread going I could pop Quentin into that ... and then into the Dragonfly game .. if thats what were doing with this Firefly RPG.

I posted awhile back I didn't want to pop Quentin into the Adventures in Gunrunning thread cause he was oriented towards the Dragonfly game and it might be confusing to put him in too early .. or something like that.

Hence I started this ooc thread

Feel free to give me a word what we're doing with Dragonfly .. cause if Quentin has to tag along with the Hitchers fer a bit so he can seamlessly end up in the Dragonfly campaign so be it

I think that sounds splendid. I am sure the Faire abounds with both historians and antiquities dealers, etc.

And there is a huge university there, concentrating on ancient history and such like that there, and craftsmen reproducing almost anything you can think of ;-)

There is bound to be someone there for you to have come to see. And I wish I could take credit for placing the Faire there for you, but it has been in place for months ... some of the earlier interludes for NiccoAllez place him there already.

See? This is what I meant. I don't recall that post, but that's to be no reflection on you at all. Ask anyone in the troupe, they'll tell you about my Swiss cheese memory. It's a pure miracle that I remember who Rowan is at all at this point.
