I have a question for all who would have liked to have seen "Firefly" continued for a few more seasons: would you or would you not have liked a "Firefly" musical episode a la, "Once more with feeling," season 6 of "Buffy"? I know I would have. here's why, I thought that; that particular episode of Buffy was one of the better ones because it showed the effort the actors and actresses where willing to go to make the show the hit that is was, also it showed that the actors where willing to branch out of their field and do something different.
Edit: that's not to say the rest of the Buffy episodes where bad,(all seven seasons where awesome.) just that, that particular one was one I liked most.

It'd be a split thing for me. My Broadway/musical junkie side would be utterly and completely thrilled, and I would be bouncing off the walls. OMWF was the entire reason I got into Buffy and therefore Joss in the first place...I figured, 'Hey, a musical episode? That show has to be awesome.'

But then again, Joss said that he did OMWF because Buffy lended itself to a musical. You half expected them to burst into song anyway. So he got away with that. Firefly doesn't exactly do that. The actors, I know, would throw themselves into it...they all seem so devoted to that show. I know they'd also have fun with it. But I don't think it'd work for a real episode of Firefly. Then again, there WAS Jaynestown...maybe, just maybe, Joss could make it work. ^_^

"Bwaa...it's kind of a warrior...strikes fear into the hearts of..."

Thanks for the comments, and in case you where wondering the title of my post was supposed to be "Firefly Musical" it was changed to "RE" for some reason with an edit.

Any special episode like that is entirely based on the show's situation at the time. OMWF worked so well because not only did it have wonderful music and visuals, but the subject matter of the episode made sense with the rest of the season and series - much like Smile Time (Angel, season 5).

I can't picture a situation where music could DIRECTLY tell the story in a Firefly episode. Music adds to each episode, even evokes feelings we might not otherwise feel, but it never tells the story in Firefly. Music told the story in OMWF.

----------------------------------------------
STEVEthePIRATE could easily adapt Marti Noxon's "Bad, Bad Day" from OMWF into a diatribe about his current employment situation. He won't - but he could.

I could see a situation where the BDH's might get involved in the putting on of a stage musical on some backward moon. The episode wouldn't exactly BE a musical (the way OMWF was), but a musical could be part of the plot during the episode. See the movie "Tombstone" for an example of how stage music could be incorporated into the plot of a show. Also, the karaoke bar from Angel was a good example of a way to get the characters singing in the show without actually making a "musical", per se. Heck, we already heard Jayne sing "Hero of Canton".

Speaking of musicals, maybe one of our more talented filk-ers will scoop this up and run with it. I'm less than familiar with the original song but after SW ep III.....

Absolutely not, it completely would not work for firefly. It worked perfectly in Buffy because it was supernatural. I agree that OMWF is one of the best episodes of buffy, but only because of the setting. There'd be no reason for the crew of serenity to just start singing, so yea, definitely a no.

I've actully been playing with this very idea. Mental immage it best lends itself to...

Middle of a proformance...someone forgets a line...silence, and the only person with enough sence to keep it going says their next line, which somehow fits but...it skips about half a page of diolouge...during which Jayne had a line. So suddenly, a few lines later, Jayne suddenly blurts out his line that they skipped, which makes absoloutly no sence in context...

This mental immage due to experencing the equivelenet to a real-life experence on stage and Jayne in Ariel.

Oh that so sounds like a Jayne moment...

Jayne we already know can play the guitar, not so sure on the singing, though (talking about Jayne, not Adam Baldwin, here). Since the only one who probably has vocal training would likely be Inara, I'm wondering how you could convincingly fit in, say, Mal and Zoe singing somewhere. KF

Lord, I'm walking your way. Let me in, for my feet are sore, my clothes are ragged.
Look in my eyes, Lord, and my sins will play out on them as on a screen. Read them all.
Forgive what you can and send me on my path. I will walk on until you bid me rest.
