Has anyone even heard of anything like this happening? I think it would be an awesome idea.

Long time supporter of this idea. My idea posted from another forum

Quote:

I've been brainstorming about this topic for a while. It's actually led me to taking some programming classes, and im thinking about getting certified as a vg programmer from my local community college. So that i would be able to contribute to the idea.

Anyway, here's my idea:
I like the idea of it being very free-roaming, but i do agree that i would like a story. I dont believe in playing the characters because you should be your own character in a game, the whole point of a game is to be in the story!(but thats just me, maybe we could play mal or the crew)
I know that a lot of people absolutley hate japanese anime and i've never played this game, but ragnarok seems like it wouldn't take much time or money compared to all of these 3d rendered games that everyone is talking about. Realistically, i think if a team worked on it, we would be able to enjoy it in a few years. Im not big on anime myself, but it would be a pretty fun experience.

To solve problems of jerks playing the mmorpg we could have a solo, offline campaign that you HAVE to finish in order to get online. Then the jerk's would be discouraged because they have to play for several hours before the get online. The solo campaign could include different story lines. EX:

1) Open the game as JOE SCHMOE on 'Earth that was' and you take one last look as you board the spaceship TITANIC, and the ship is so vast it serves as its own in-game world where you spend maybe 30-40 minutes walking around, maybe a small mini-storyline(blue sun!). The storyline ends with JOE SCHMOE looking out into the black and it fades out.

2) JOHN DEER wakes up as a worker on a planet in the process of terraforming and stumbles across trouble ( blue sun!). Mini storyline blah blah and then he dies.

3) Civil WAR! Choose a side, and follow the story. You see SGT malcome 'mal' reynolds. BANG BANG, KABOOM! and the alliance wins. After that, a screen appears where you can fully customize a character and go online.

Then you would be able to open shop, work as a hunter, trader, smuggler, assassin, bounty hunter, companion(not sure how that would work), etc. Live in the 'Verse and be free. Buy a ship, get a small crew together, maybe even a cook.

Also i was thinking, given the amount of server space, there could be different worlds, maybe keep adding if the game is a success. Traveling from world to world? no problem, hitch a ride with a ship that would actually take a day or two for your character to arrive at the destination. Get bored on the ship? maybe some active chat rooms while you're in your bunk or organize your items, create weapons out of raw materials, make something to trade, or read a book!(zshan yeu? sp)

Meet the crew, badger, nishka, and the mudders! if the actors liked the game they could play too! Well, tell me what you guys think, i hate long posts so sorry if you had to sit through this long post and it wasnt interesting enough. Thanks for reading!
OH YEAH LOOK AT MY SIG. LOL i've had it for a while.

Thats just a quick brainstorm kinda thing. I just think its more realistic than going for a 3d generated verse.

I dont really like the idea of playing as the crew, because i feel that it would be better if we were part of the verse represented by personalized characters. Maybe create the BDHs and give free copies to the cast (not sure if they would play) We could call it the 'VERSE(based on the series Firefly by Joss Whedon).

-----
***someone should make a MMORPG based on the 'verse!***

Geeze i want Firefly to come back!

Not to pee on the parade, but the show has more chances entering its 10th season than a commercial Firefly MMORPG ever being made. MMOs are too expensive and require too much production time for someone to take the risk. Heck, Star Wars is struggling to stay afloat as is and underwent some major re-tooling in hopes of turning a profit.

Now, with all that said, I could see a fan-based Shockwave game working. There's some decent small time games out there with on-going players and all that jazz.

SWG is failing because of SOE and Lucas Arts constantly fighting each other. LA wants Jedi, SOE puts them in... Jedi are too uber, LA works w/ SOE to nerf the game to hell. SOE publishes nerf, everyone leaves. Truth is that SWG should never have had Jedi, and most of the problems would not have existed in the first place. Hell, with all time time they have spent revamping Jedi, they could have fixed every bug in the game. I think a Firefly MMO would work much better because it isn't about an uberclass (Jedi), it is about friends/crew and all. As long as you can't play as a Psychic it would be easy to balance and play.

Yeah. I just think sence Stargate Worlds has been announced that something like this might have a chance. I am a hardcore gamer and have played tons of RPGs, MMOs, FPSs, etc. and I see Firefly being an awesome MMORPG if you get the right people to do it.

I have only resently gotten into Firefly... I saw it on the Sci Fi Channel and I got hooked and I saw Serenity and man I love this show. The people that took it off the air are crazy and I'm surprised that no one has taken up on the offer to continue the series. I have seen alittle bit of Joss's other stuff but I love Firefly and it ranks up with Star Wars and Stargate Sg-1 with me.

Back to the MMORPG, I think the Firefly universe would be very easy to make with Alliance, Bounty Hunters, etc. and all the weapons and planets that can made...

Who knows what will happen.

::Edit::

As for SWG, that game was good at first but they killed it with their new patch... I use to play it alot and loved it but now I can't stand it.

SOE is about crap for customer service or listening for that matter.

::Edit::

One last edit is that a singleplayer RPG wouldn't work because Firefly would be alot better played out in a MMORPG because of the social part of it.

I would love if they made a Firefly verse MMO. But yeah I’m not sure the verse has the success yet to put the money in a game like that. Of any Joss's shows the Buffyverse would be the most likely of being made into a MMO.

The designer, once the code is finished, has said he might make it open source. It's PHP, so nothing to download. I think it's a fun game... Something to think about.

A Firefly MMORPG would be great, I am just not sure how possible it is. Leave out the grafics and coding, a monumental task by themselves. There is also the liscensing. Fox would have to give permission and they have been reluctant to do so. Altough since there is a Serenity RPG that might be a way around Fox.

I am not worried about the bullet with my name on it. Just the thousands marked "Occupant".

My friend Dave works for the Game Developers The Collective, the ones who made possibly the only semi-decent Buffy game for the X-Box at the height of it's popularity (Was it a decent game? I never played it) Who knows, There's enough Browncoats out there that maybe convincing someone out there to go ahead with a regular styled game of the 'verse could happen, more often then not.

While it can obviously be done, I think it shouldn't be. Firefly just lacks the background to create an online universe capable of housing thousands of different players. Currently, there are only about 15 people anyone would be interested in meeting, including the crew. Only one ship anyone would want to be flying. No places the majority would ever want to visit. No greater storyline for players to interact with. Even with a great background to build upon, you can still screw it up (SWG for instance).
Besides, Firefly lacked the fanbase just to keep the show on the air. Unfortunately I can't see any reason to validate the effort and money it'll take to create a Firefly MMORPG. A single player RPG/FPS, where you can go co-op and someone can play Zoe as you play Mal, or some such, I can see working. All in all Serenity and her crew are, currently, the only draw cards the 'verse has for gamers, and that isn't enough for an MMO.

I've had the idea for ages, and it would be an awesome game, Firefly is perfect for an MMO, an idea I had just now is an Online FPS, maybe even an MMOFPS, it would be interesting, and I have a love for FPS, which is one of the many reasons why the Nintendo Revolution is going to be the best thing ever for me.

isn't NN2 is a ground based fantazy rpg? don't we need somethin' with both ground and space?
Universal Combat A World Apart has both. but there's no missions and I don't know how modable it is.
Freelancer is another good choice but again no ground game. Godzero & team are makin' a Firefly full conversion mod for it.

IMO, the best thin' to do would be to make a new mmorpg Firefly game from scratch.. or just rpg with MP servers similar to that of Freelancer...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Eve Online yet. Its new server is even called Serenity.

In Eve Online you play a freighter captain, flying among the stars. You build a character with certain skill sets, then start plying your trade. The universe is huge, with a fairly complex navigational system, and a large variety of ships you can purchase. You have a reputation with the various governments that changes based on your activities in their space. You can be a pirate, mine asteroid belts, shuttle goods back and forth between planets, take missions, and probably lots of other stuff I didn't get to. I only played it for a couple weeks (free trial, might have stuck with it if I had the time to commit) but it seemed to have great potential.

If I were making a Firefly MMO, that's the model I'd look to first.

I agree... personally as not such a big fan of MMO's, I think a single player RPG would be great.

Also, if you know what you were doing, you could base the ground combat on the NWN2 toolset/game and make your own space combat... or borrow one from Freespace2 or Freelancer.

What we need is a seamless planetary landing space sim that has planets with enough population as to not bore us with 2 hours of flying to blow up an objective. I must admit I have no knowledge of the Firefly series, but I've been an avid fan of space sims for the majority of my 25 years in this existance. I am well aware of the complexities involved in such an en devour, but if a basic MMORPG system was built with independent, fan run (company funded?) servers supporting different mods, it may just work.

Yeah it will take us to be coordinated to get a standard of mods, which the game development team should have no part of. But it's been done with X3: Reunion. The mods and scripts available for
X3 simply blow my mind. And it's because the gamers themselves create them. They know what they want and with an easily modular system, they can make it a reality for multiple users.

Games soon to be released, such as Tomorrow War, have such promise to revive this dying gaming genre. Space sims were fun when they involved something we never did, which was fly in space. Unfortunately for distributors, flying in space is old news now. But the space sim genre still has so much to offer. A developer needs only to create a base system that will support user made mods and ships and such, and the genre will find it's place again, even if just among us space sim geeks. Combine that with online interaction and the idea becomes golden. Just allow a single player story mode or the free form online version.

A word of advice, from a software developer myself, if anyone considering developing this idea gets started, base the system off of how the online connection reacts. Local code will depend on the machine it runs on, which is up to the user, as we well except (know) lag with online games can be avoided if the program is initially designed to handle such issues.

I am a software developer and an avid space sim fan completely willing to help design the next gen of space simulation. This offer stems from the desire to have the game I've dreamed of for oh so long... Maybe someday it will exist.

do you guys know about how multiverse operates?
Just wondering because they already have the licence to firefly from fox and have an mmo engine, they just need to find a team. If you already knew this, sorry for repeating :)

Yeah, but what COULD be made is a browser based game. I dont know how it could work, but its an idea. Or even a MUD. I agree that an MMORPG probobly wont happen but if we tried a MUD or a Browser Based web game, we could make a choice from there after a while.

These guys have stated that they need some help:

http://s4.invisionfree.com/GunRunner

These guys as well:

http://www.fireflymod.net/

I believe that both projects need help with and aside from programming.
