DECOY

Wash's Move:
Location - Studio for the commercial shoot

Flashback:

(One quiet day, deep in the black, the good ship Serenity sails along its crime-ridden course… unmolested, ignored. Suddenly a message appears from over the cortex… Destined to change the life of the addressed, the addresse… and everyone who will ever know that this message ever existed… for good or ill.)

Sometime in the near future, or in a parallel dimension:

(Wash is on the bridge, guiding his ship through the black… A beep is heard, and the accented female voice of Serenity says: “Message received for Wash Warren” in both English and Chinese. (Wash turns to the cortex panel, and reads a short, prophetic message. He lets out an excited squeal of laughter, jumps for joy, and races off the bridge, leaving the message still on the screen… the type is blurry, and then it fades out, as if it had never existed before. Wash’s voice is heard from somewhere below decks: “Captain Mal, it won’t take long, we’ve got to orbit anyway, you won’t even know I’m gone… They said that it would only take a day, and I’ll make a live wave commercial for it. It’ll make me be a valuable asset to the team, other than the piloting thing, like when we’re on the ground.”

Time passes, as time usually does… somewhere in the black, a single quiet planet, named, but never visited, turns a full revolution on its axis… Just a small simple thing, in the grand scheme in the cosmos, but some things are better off undone…

Onboard the Serenity, Captain Mal gathers his rag-tag crew together in the common room, minus his heroic, useful pilot. They sit quietly, and stare at the cortex communications screen, as the following is broadcast, live, to the entire sphere of human influence.

(i swear I will craft an infomercial, just bear with me.)

Decoy, they make me go first.

Damon's turn:
LOCATION - CARGO BAY

MERZ
"I apologize. I thought that was the appropriate response. I meant no harm."

Damon keeps his gaze fixed on Merz as she turns to pick up the cover and hardware. Her appology seemed genuine, more so than her strange form of gratitude anyway. His anger fades, leaving him somewhere between confused and skeptical.

MERZ
*tai-kong suo-yo de shing-chiou doh sai-jin wu di pigu -- i surrender. i will be what they made me until death claims me.

The words hit Damon like a punch to the gut as he realizes what Merz was trying to do: fight the very same battle he has been fighting all his life. He watches her, as the emotion drains from her face, relaxing into nothing but what appeared to be calm and peaceful.

Quote:

“i surrender.”

Is that what giving up is? Peace? No more fighting, no more running… just… that simple decision…

MERZ
“It was good you remembered this. I will see to it that it is installed as soon as possible.”

Damon suddenly feels his anger boil up at the sound of her voice- not calm or peaceful but dead. Was that how he sounded to Xiang? No wonder the guy felt so determined to smack some sense back into him. His rage builds, rage toward his father, Crofton and the Alliance… and toward himself for even considering letting them win.

He walks up to Merz and snatches the cover from her, his hardened glare boring into her dying eyes.

“You listen to me. I don’t care how many times you screw up, I don’t care how many times you fail, and I don’t care how many people you piss off to do it, but you do not give up. You give up this fight and you might as well put a bullet in your mouth because dead is all you’ll be to yourself and everyone else around you. You give up this fight and you are no better than those weak cowards who would rather piss themselves kissing their oppressors’ feet than fight for what is theirs. Those bastards don’t deserve that victory and they can rot in hell before we give it to them. Dong ma?”

___________
River sees Simon, just before the transmission cuts. She logically goes through the reasons why it could have cut off. She decides to go to the cargo bay. As she walks in, she sees Jayne. She looks down to him, and says out loud, with a smile, for everyone in there to hear:

"Jayne is a girl's name. You had a face to match it."

She gives a little laugh, and meanders away, not a care in the world.

MERCEDESTROY

MERZ move

DAMON stalks to MERZ, and snatches the cannon cover from her hand. The hardware drops to the floor between them. He is positively livid with anger and he stares directly into her eyes, willing her to listen, to respond to him. MERZ stand mute, waiting for him to finish. DAMON’s words are impassioned, harsh, and so like he would have said more true than MERZ wants to deal with, to acknowledge. Maro, wherever you are. do you remember me. do you still … care? This time she cannot stop that thought pattern, it bounces around the inside of her skull.

DAMON ends up, almost nose to nose with MERZ, neither shouting nor whispering, but all the more intense for that very reason. This is something he believes in with all of his heart, not for show, but for real. Those bastards don’t deserve that victory and they can rot in hell before we give it to them. Dong ma?

Time stops. Motion stops. DAMON’s words echo and rebound from the furthest depths of her being, her soul. Nothing he says is new, but presented like this, the concept that another she has known would have thrown back to her the same way, is forcing MERZ to choose, to decide what she really wants. And again she is surprised and perhaps gratified (if she knew to apply that word to this new feeling) to realize that above all things she actually has a choice. That she has wants.

Heard in the distance: but not particularly attended to -

ROWAN
Excuse me! Whoever's up there, if you have a minute, could you send out a ship-wide comm? Chow's on!

MERZ is suddenly inundated with impressions, half-understood feelings, half-understood interactions, confusion, regrets, fear, loneliness, and finally rage. Does it show on her face, in her stance, in her eyes? She does not know. For this moment she is utterly free of any pretense or attempt at control, so completely indrawn that her outward appearance is of no consequence to her. And finally, it is the rage, the anger that wins. Anger she has never allowed herself to feel, to show, to even contemplate. The anger that she needs. She looks at DAMON for an instant, with smoldering eyes. "Oh yes, I understand. I understand well." Her hands clench, but it is not DAMON for whom her rage burns.

She whirls looking for a target, something to vent her feelings on. Her eyes catch the now-empty crate behind her. Perfect. how dare they raise us to be helpless One fist pistons out at the crate. It does not shatter, her hand breaks clean through the side with a sound like a pistol shot. how dare they take feelings away from us The other fist lashes out and makes another hole. Her thoughts become words as she continues to take her anger out on this oh-so convenient and inanimate object. "There can be no surrender." {punch} "I do not give up." {punch} "They shall not win." {punch} "They cannot win. " {punch} "They … will … not … be … allowed … to … win!" {punch – both fists} The crate collapses into a splintered ruin.

She turns back to DAMON, the fire dying from her eyes, but the humanity, what there is of it, remains. "A Troy never surrenders. I will not be the first. This fight I will take to my grave if need be. Dong ma, little brother?"

Damon's turn:
LOCATION - CARGO BAY

Damon stands in shocked silence as Merz suddenly turns and starts pounding the go se out of the empty cannon crate. He runs his words through his head- it was something he told himself all the time but he never realized they were that convincing. He smiles as the crate collapses at her feet.

If only Xiang could see this...

Merz turns back to Damon, the fire dying from her eyes, but the humanity, what there is of it, remains. A Troy never surrenders. I will not be the first. This fight I will take to my grave if need be. Dong ma, little brother?

Damon's smile widens into a grin. "Damn right."

He bends down, grabbing the bag of hardware from the floor and hands it to Merz with the cover.

"Here. Appropriate responses vary from place to place. Where I was workin, people didn't have time for graditude, though I think most folks around here just say thank you."

Quote:

"Jayne is a girl's name. You had a face to match it."

Damon looks up at River and then back down at Jayne. He had completely forgotten Jayne was there. He briefly wonders how she knew about the make up before he remembers her ability. Lucky for them, her words only make sense to those who already know what she's talking about... at least so far.

He can't help but chuckle at River's words and starts walking toward the stairs when he remembers Rowan's.

"Hey, Jayne, I hear grub's on the table. Let's grab a quick plate or two and talk about what needs doin"

DRAGONFLYDIRECTOR

INTERLUDE 4 - VOLUME ONE
The Hexx Chronicles Continued...

LOCATION - Outside a Small Villa in Uchigatana City
2518 AD, Solar Day 24 / January 24th
2306 hrs/11:06 PM Alliance Mean Time

Thankfully the Noshimoto Way was clear at this hour of the night, no vehicles to spoil the idyllic quiet of this section of Uchigatana. None of the other solos, couples or other groups walking the street took notice of tall female drifting across the cobbled avenue. Her movements practiced and deceptively at ease, insured her obscurity. Risking a glance back at the high smooth limestone and mortar wall surrounding the Traders villa and it's modest grounds, she allowed herself a grin. One of the Blue Sun 'actors' was on the wall, her shadow barley breaking its outline. But still visible nonetheless -- at least to those who were trained in observation.

Even so, Or'sha felt strangely at peace. The ability to play off the rumors coming from Mercedes' regrettable defection was a comforting irony ...Mercedes ... I wish I could analyze your reasons for leaving... she thought with a sharp angry pang of regret. Unaccustomed to the fierce emotion that thinking of Merz elicited, Or'sha brought up the details of her current operation.

Skipping past the relitivly solid facts, she focused on her chosen chesspieces. The five standing guard did not know what a 'Troy' was. They were informed of their cover and family name of "Troy". The operatives of the Blue Sun were always excellent at playing the parts required. Having no contact with them or her 'commander', allowed Or'sha to observe and analyze in peace. The requirements of her 'employers' would be followed - to only a point. Past that point, they would have to resort to their own tools. Or'sha was here on another mission - information to be processed and delivered to Corvair.

Now to the least known variable: Jonas Hexx, Cleaner, Professional, Assassin.

As she dropped into her chosen blind, she mentally accessed his file. It was sparse. His history was documented, but the manner in which it was written suggested that a large part was a carefully fabricated facade'. He had arrived today in a vessel called the Longshot, cased the Villa in the early evening and was following his usual pattern of having no pattern. Other details about him and his trip to New Hokkaido gleaned from her sources had no bearing on this operation. But the information built an interesting picture. One she wanted to understand. But again the file was a hoax, a blind within a blind.

Not as limited a file as what Or'sha had found concerning her own 'family'. The times between activation's must have allowed any memory of the Troys or other ABELs to blend into history, inconsequential as ghosts.

Could Merz have been right? How could she truly believed what Merz recounted to her back on the Beau Geste, so many months ago? After all, this Marovech Merz spoke of was only an engineer and ... limited.

Sighing, Or'sha checked to see of the myriad video and biometric feeds were operating. The triple redundancy checks and filters assured her that none could be compromised by even a 'Pro'.

Yes, this Jonas Hexx will be interesting to watch, she concludes.

MAL'S MOVE

LOCATION - GALLEY
2518, Jan 24th, near 4 PM

As...

MERZ stops, thinks about his question. Just where do her loyalties lie? She has disassociated herself from her family, permanently as far as she is concerned. She has been long separated from the A.P.E.S., and no longer knows how they might feel about her. So here and now … .

MERZ
"Mal. You have placed me in crews’ quarters. You have allowed me to man your gun. You have offered me crew compensation for my actions. My take on this is thus. Until such time as we reach a mutual agreement to the contrary, then I offer my absolute loyalty to you as my Captain, and to the complement of Serenity as fellow crewmates, and to any passengers as required by my position within the crew. In that order. Do you find that satisfactory?"

MAL
nods
"Best I can ask for at this particular time. Thanks for the info. And pardon me for bein’ so quick, but got other people to discuss things with, so I need to be movin’ on."

Smiling at her, he moves off, leaving MERZ to her own devices. As he approaches Inara, he gestures with a flourish towards the fore hatch.

MAL
Mademoiselle, after you.

Inara's surprised smile fills the whole galley with a warming glow. At least to Mal's eyes. She allows a small curtsy and begins up the steps. Mal follows after, turning only to wink to the others gathered in the Galley.

Still simmering over Thorne's apparent lack of tact and non-understanding of the phrase "not shittin' where you eat", Mal refuses to allow Inara's presence to make him feel better. However, his resolve slips. Just before they reach her shuttle, he unconsciously lifts his hand to touch hers. His attempt is interrupted as she reaches up to tap her unlock code in to her shuttle. Mal, feeling flustered and out of his element, retreats back to his loneliness. Fearing what will happen when he crosses her threshold, he tries to firm his resolve.

Book's Move
Bridge to Galley

Book watches Kaylee walk away, the slump in her shoulders telling more of a tale than her sad eyes. Walking to the comm, he clicks it on and makes an announcement. "Attention everyone. Rowan has been good enough to prepare us a sumptuous meal. Please come to the galley while it's still hot."

Clicking off the comm, he sits down in the pilots chair and thinks. Two weeks.... such a long time for things to go wrong. Book sighs again. I never should have let him go. I feel responsible for the boy. I should have tried to stop him.

The faint tink of holographic pool balls being smacked comes floating down the hall, bringing him out of his guilty reverie. He stands and slowly makes his way to the galley.

MERZ move

LOCATION - CARGO BAY

She does not understand the girl RIVER’s words. For this moment, she does not care. Everything, if not under control and completely focused is just … all right. And for this moment, it is enough.

DAMON
Hey, Jayne, I hear grub's on the table. Let's grab a quick plate or two and talk about what needs doin?

grub? MERZ thinks, that did not smell like grub. . But the intent is clear, along with what ROWAN said; a meal is waiting. And that is just fine with MERZ. She wonders what JAYNE might have heard or witnessed and dismisses the thought. it is of no consequence.

MERZ once again sets the cover and the hardware on the top of a short stack of crates. Since it is most likely they will be going outside from this location, then might as well leave the stuff here. She turns to DAMON who has moved towards the stairs and his meal. MERZ hisses to get his attention. Catching his eye, she nods her head at the demolished container.

MERZ
“If he asks what happened, tell him, well tell him it was woodpeckers.”
she whispers, and winks at him.

Damon's turn:
LOCATION - CARGO BAY to GALLEY

Damon chuckles at Merz's comment and turns back to the stairs. Food is sounding very good right now and he can't wait to find out how good of a cook Rowan is.

Waiting takes less time than he thought it would as he is hit by the smell of something delicious fighting it's way down from the kitchen.

He spots Rowan and Book around a holographic pool table as he enters the galley and nods to them.

OOC: A simple picture will (hopefully) soon follow to give a better visualization of Rowan's view of the table. For now, I'm using compass directions to explain her positions on the table:
South: The end of the table she shoots from.
North: The opposite end, where the nine-ball diamond is located.

Rowan's Move
LOCATION: Galley

Rowan's signature on a break is to always shoot from the southeast corner of the table, a habit she almost never deviates from. This time she sinks the 3 right off the bat and promptly moves around the table to put the 1 into the west side corner. Then she uses the 2 for an angle shot on the 6 and 5, sitting tight together on the west side, resulting in the intentional-looking sinking of the 6 in the east side pocket. Pleased with the outcome, she easily lines up a shot with the 2, angling for the 8.

It's like meditation in motion - one part physical, one part mental. The triangulation for each shot forms in her head as she takes in the position of each ball in relation to the pockets on the table, which her body automatically reacts to. After dropping the 8 in the northwest corner, she lines up the 2 for an easy drop in the northeast corner when Kaylee enters from the direction of the bridge.

ROWAN: "Hey, Kaylee. There's sesame chicken ready if you're hungry."

Inara's turn

LOCATION: galley to shuttle

Mal flashes one of his rare smiles--Inara's heart dances a little more in her chest. She nods demurely, giving nothing away...her training taught her to never give anything away. She chances a glance over his left shoulder, Catching Rowan's eye--the woman's wearing a very amused expression--and she raises a brow meaningfully at Inara. The bonds of sisterhood, so rare in this desolate vacuum, seem to have grown strong between them. As Mal turns his face from her, Inara wrinkles her nose at Rowan, and grins girlishly.

He turns away, engaging Rowan in what seems to be an intense conversation--tones hushed.

Inara leans one hip against the table and loses herself in watching the crew. The Shepherd drifts through the throng, hiding a wince of pain with an expertise that worries Inara. She means to go to him, but he hurriedly exits the Galley.

Mal and Rowan's conversation lasts but a few moments, he also trades a few words with Mercedes, and before Inara realizes it, Mal's warm scent is tickling her nose again.

She turns her head toward the scent, and then down...she can only see the back of Mal's head, he has struck an ostentatiously low flourishing bow. Inara chuckles inwardly, and gives Mal a grin and a small curtsy, touching her fingers to her lips and slightly bending her knees.

"Mademoiselle, after you."

Mal's good humour lasts only as far as the hallway. In no time at all, the silence stretches uncomfortably again.

They make their way toward her shuttle.

KAYLEE: "Smells good, Rowan, but I'm not very hungry right now. Thanks anyway."

Oh, now there's a girl with man trouble. It's a condition that's easy to spot from a mile off, although the lack of Kaylee's brilliant smile would have been a clue for anyone paying attention long enough.

Making a note to bring a plate of food to the girl later, Rowan returns to sink the 2 in the northeast corner as Book arrives from the bridge. Setting her stick down on the table, she moves into the kitchen area and slips on a couple of oven mitts to get the chicken-ized protein. Placing the platter on the bar, she looks up to discover a black look on the preacher's face that rivals Kaylee's equally blue mood. Seems they both have little black rain clouds following them through the ship, conspicuously after they both spoke to the young doctor. Odd thing indeed.

ROWAN: "Hey Shephard. Hope you don't mind me taking liberties in your kitchen. Just seemed like it was time to feed the masses."

Taking off the mitts, she tosses them onto the counter before moving back to the table so she can finish the game and folks can use the table to eat. She has the cue stick in hand and is surveying the table again when she sees Damon come in with the look of the voraciously starved that only a fella in his late teens and early 20s can master.

DAMON: "Who's winnin?"

ROWAN (smiling): "Me, myself and I. You ever handle a stick zhao di di?"

"Oh no. I'm sorry, Rowan. It's not you." Book looks somewhat ashamed and tries his best to put on a Shepherd's demeanor as he walks over to the table where Rowan is picking up her cue. "The Brothers in the abbey always took turns preparing meals, and Kaylee likes to cook as well, but..." He says, lowering his voice so only Rowan can hear. "...it's a nice change to taste someone else's cooking again." Book smells the air with an increasing grin as the intense aroma of the chicken-ized protein enters his olfactory system. Shaking her head, she sinks the 4 without hardly taking time to line it up.

ROWAN: "I always wait until others have had theirs...and you should try chewing some of that instead of inhaling it.

He takes another bite and nods to the last bit of food on his plate. "This is really good. Where'd you learn to-" He catches himself mid sentence. He doesn't like to pry but he's surprised to find that he's actually interested in knowing about this woman's life. He shakes his head, more to himelf, and returns his attention to his food. MERCEDESTROY

MERZ move

She hangs in the cargo bay for a short time, just … paused. Time to go eat, yes but not yet. Interesting ‘feeling’ right now. And just possibly a concept for it exists in the database. She accesses her dictionary – compiled over a long time, partially from training database, partially from live observation, and partially from her own research. She locates what she was searching for: catharsis. Definition Three seems most appropriate; ‘A release of emotional tension, as after an overwhelming experience, that restores or refreshes the spirit.’

well that certainly fits what just occurred. and I do feel something. relief … well maybe not, I am still … sad. but not so, yes, tense fits. She sighs. to be a civilian is much harder than it looks – they make it look so … effortless. or they conceal it well

Time for food. MERZ is very aware that even here, in this place of plenty, she has not been attending to her bodily needs as carefully as she should. But here, among strangers, she is afraid to be too different or too, what is that word – greedy?. She can afford to build her reserve back up slowly. But hunger is drawing her back to the dining room, from which emerges a faint hum of conversation, and the clicking sounds she heard the other night.

KAYLEE passes her, drifting back down to her Engine room, as distracted as she has been all day. MERZ does not know what to make of this, and tables it for later observation and contemplation. In the Galley/dining area, Shepherd BOOK is watching ROWAN and appears rather distracted himself, although the smell of dinner seems to be bringing him a bit more toward the present place and time. ROWAN is doing some odd mathematical process with a long stick and a holographic situation board – a rather gifted display of triangulation and targeting. MERZ hovers in the doorway silently for a short time, just watching. DAMON has already filled a plate and selected a choice piece of floor; plate in one hand, spoon in the other. He is eating almost faster than he can chew and joking with ROWAN between bites.

Observing ROWAN the thought occurs to MERZ … what a sniper i could make out of her - very talented … Although neither are paying the least attention to her, MERZ smiles rather tentatively at ROWAN and DAMON as she passes towards the stove. She nods at BOOK, and picks up a plate and chopsticks of her own.

After loading up her plate, she crosses the room and drops cross-legged onto the floor near DAMON, to attack her own meal. She has never tasted anything quite like it, easily the equal of the few real, cooked meals MERZ has had the good fortune to sample. After shoving in the first few bites and savoring them (although a really quick savor to be sure) she looks up at DAMON “S’good, she mumbles through her full mouth, “wazzit?”

She stuffs another mouthful, and wipes her mouth on her right forearm, while waiting for his reply.

Rowan's Move
LOCATION: Galley

Damon frowns up at her as if she's lost her mind. "Hope you made enough, cuz you wait that long an' there won't be nothin left." He takes another bite and nods to the last bit of food on his plate. "This is really good. Where'd you learn to...sorry, never mind."

FLASHBACK
He was looking at her like he was seeing her for the first time all over again. "You cook?"

Tasting the hot and sour soup, she decided she needed a second opinion. Dipping the spoon in again, she held it up for him. "Taste."

He did and his expression became even more severe in his shock. "It is...good."

It was easy to misread his tone. "Oh come on, you won't hurt my feelings - you don't think there's too much red pepper?"

"No, I mean it is good. But I do not recall - did you tell me you could cook?"

She frowned at him, taken aback by his sheer astonishment. "You act like you've never seen anyone cook before."

"Well." He shrugged. "No, I have not. We had people for such things."

It was like something out of the ancient times on earth-that-was. How the higher houses in China had a bevy of servants to see to their every need. Considering his upbringing, it wouldn't be that unheard of for him to have never seen the preparation of the food he ate every day.

A little embarrassed over the fascination in his eyes, she turned back to the soup. "Wait until you taste my bao."

His arms came around her from behind, his hands sliding over her as he nuzzled through her hair to her neck.

"Do you know how jealous my father would be to learn I have fallen for a beautiful, intelligent woman who knows how to make bao?"

She smiled and turned her face toward him. "You haven't tasted it yet."

END FLASHBACK

ROWAN (smiling sadly): "Glad you like it."

The 5, 7 and 9 still remain on the table, but all at once she's not as interested in finishing as she had been. Setting the stick upright on the floor, she holds it in both hands, hanging on to the image of Xiang just before he kissed her in front of the oven. Had she ever felt that cherished?

MERZ: “S’good," she mumbles through her full mouth, “Wazzit?”

Caught up in another of what was becoming a series of very vivid ruminations, she hadn't noticed when Merz came in. Smiling at her, she saves Damon from having to stop licking his plate long enough to answer.

ROWAN: "It's sesame chicken a la Fa Zhou - secret family recipe."

Lifting the stick again, she makes fast work of all three balls in succession - 5 to the southwest corner, seven to the southeast corner and the 9 back in the southwest corner. All in less than two minutes' time. Lifting the stick to set it on end again, she nods with satisfaction and looks around the room.

ROWAN (grinning): "Okay! Anybody game? I'll even spot you three balls."

Walking around the table past Damon, Book gives him a slightly amused look. "You really should take the time out of your work to play Rowan a game." Book glances at Rowan as he goes to the food and gives her a wink. "I'm sure it wouldn't take too long and you could get right back to work."

Chuckling under his breath, he slices a few hunks of protein off onto a plate, dollops on some gravy and grabs one of the rolls that were left over from a previous meal. Stopping to look at everyone else, mainly half-finished with their meals, he clears his throat and considers asking the room if anyone would mind if he said grace. Deciding against speaking out to people who have already consumed their meal and are preparing to leave, Book walks to the corner couch and sits, sets his plate down on the table and bows his head.

Damon cocks his head slightly to the side as he looks at Merz, considering her words. He would have figured her to be more concerned about the work needing to be done.

Well, Jayne's either screwing around with make-up or working in the cargo bay by himself. Either way I guess he can wait a few minutes, at least 'til I'm finished eating.

"Alright then, but I can't stay long. Maybe Book can take over for me."

He looks over at Book and stops when he sees him praying, head bowed hands folded. Damon watches him with a distant fascination. It's been over six years since he last saw someone pray and seeing it now seemed... awkward.

Waiting until Book is finished with his prayer, Damon swallows his food and asks: "Does he hear you, your God?"

OOC: Maniac, Damon's next question will be: "How do you know?" so you can blend it into your next post if you want to save some time.

MERZ:“Take a minute off, everyone is not finished eating. Won’t kill you to light for a spell.”

MERZ looks at ROWAN “Show me, please.”

With a delighted grin, Rowan rests the stick against one shoulder and takes the hand held from the back of her waistband. She pulls up the game menu while she explains the rules from memory.

ROWAN: "Actually the rules are the easy part. Use the cue stick and the cue ball - that's the white one there - to shoot nine balls into six pockets, lowest ball to the highest. You can either shoot directly, or use the lowest ball to sink a higher ball, so long as you hit the low ball first. Sink one according to the rules and you get to try for another. Sink one against the rules, or hit a high ball out of sequence and the next player shoots. The player with the highest score wins. Dong ma?

A couple of quick touches to the screen and the rack of nine reappears like magic and Rowan tucks the hand held away again. Taking the stick, she moves around the table again and flips it twice over one hand before gripping it and holding out the lower end to Merz.

ROWAN: "It starts with the break. Shoot the cue ball into the rack of nine to separate them. If you sink one on the break, you take another turn."

Damon's turn:
LOCATION - GALLEY

Book: "I guess I don't know, but I have faith."

Damon watches Book for a long moment, weighing his words. Faith was something Damon had a lot of- faith in things he can see, hear, touch and feel. But God was different... God was very different.

"Well, if he does, he must have selective hearing..."

Quote:

FLASHBACK

Damon brings the pick down into the hard dirt of the tunnel wall. His knotted muscles have a few moments to relax as his blistered fingers adjust their position on the handle. He yanks the blade free, letting the dirt and rocks fall into the pile growing steadily at his feet. It wouldn’t be long before he would need to shovel it out of the way to make room for the next pile. But his mind is far from his work.

He no longer feels the fluid rhythm of the pick in his hands, the shackles on his wrists, or the screaming pain from his muscles and wounds. Nor does he hear the shouts of the foremen, the threats from the guards, or the sounds of their whips and clubs keeping the slaves moving as fast as their battered bodies can take them. His mind rages a war with his stomach, trying to ignore its starved demands and focus on his escape plan. This will be his last day working in this section of the mine, which means it’s his last chance to take advantage of his knowledge of the area.

Lifts are guarded, only other way up is the vents, nearest vent is in the dining area. Food… maybe I can sneak some from the- no, won’t be time for that, now think. Dinning area’s also guarded, I’ll have to hide somewhere during mealtime… Shit, I’m hungry, maybe I can hide after mealtime- no, no time for that either. Forget food, you can live without it for another night-

His thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the bell echoing through the tunnel, signaling the start of their second and last 20 minute break out of the 18 hours of work to eat. He drops his pick and quickly looks around as he makes his way down the tunnel at a brisk pace.

Where to hide? Forget hiding and get some food. No, you have to do this tonight. I’ll have plenty of other opportunities. And you’ll be just as hungry then, besides, you’re in good condition to take on some guards. You mean kill some guards. The more the better. I’ll be so screwed when Crofton finds out.

The thought of Crofton brings Damon to a sudden halt as fear grips his insides. He quickly steps into the shadows before he can be spotted and slams his fists against the tunnel wall. “Shit!” He begins pacing frantically, fiddling with the foot of chain linking the cuffs on his wrists and trying to make up his mind.

There’s no escaping him. If you succeed in getting out of here, you’ll be free. And if I fail he’ll… He shakes his head. Forget it, I’m too hungry to think, I’ll get some food and worry about escape later.

By the time he gets to the front of the line, the runny slop they call food is cold and he only has five minutes to enjoy it in. But he could care less what the stuff tastes like; his mouth is watering at the thought of having anything in it. He grabs his bowl and cup of water and hurries to the nearest empty spot on the ground among the multitude of slaves. Grateful to be off of his feet for any amount of time, he drops to dirt, setting his cup down next to him and raises the bowl to his mouth greedily. He manages half a swallow before his arms are grabbed from behind and his bowl is snatched from his hand. Pushing himself to his feet, he elbows someone behind him and wrenches his arms free. More hands reach for him, one solidifying into a fist just before plowing into his face. Ducking to the side to avoid more blows, he sees someone reach for his cup of water and dives to save it. Too late. He lands face down in the dirt and receives a kick in the ribs. Rough hands pull him up to his knees, holding his arms, and a metal pipe yanked tight against his throat pins him against a body behind him, bringing the scuffle to an end.

A large, middle-aged man kneels down in front of him, holding his bowl of food, smirking in the dim light of the cavern.

“Kane, you meh, tah mah d- The pipe is abruptly pulled tighter against his throat, cutting off his air.

Kane looks up at the man behind Damon. “Loosen up, Master Trinh would have our heads on a pike if we off his favorite Domestic.”

The pipe is loosened just enough to let him breath and talk. He pulls against the hands gripping his arms and glares at Kane.

“I’m not a Domestic, now give me back my food or I swear you won’t wake up in the morning.”

Kane keeps his cold gaze fixed on Damon as he holds the bowl between them. “Not a Domestic? So you’re telling me you come back from Buckingham Place with clean clothes, a clean shave” he pulls out a dull, rusty knife from his boot and presses the point into one of Damon’s recently healed wounds on his chest, “and a clean health bill and he doesn’t feed you while your up there?”

“Guards catch you with a weapon, you’ll be lashed and without food for a week.”

Kane smiles. “No, they catch you with a weapon and you’ll be lashed and without food for a week. I’d get only a few lashes and a shame on you speech.” He presses the knife deeper, drawing a small stream of blood. “Now answer the question.”

Damon looks down at the food and then returns his glare to Kane. “No, he doesn’t, now give it back.”

“You know what I think?” He raises the knife and holds it in front of Damon’s face. “I think that if you needed the food, Master Trinh would give it to you. But you’re stubborn and refuse to eat his food. You think you’re better than the rest of us. Killing guards, escaping the barracks at night. Fighting a one manned rebellion like a gorram war hero.” He stands up and rams a knee into Damon’s middle.

“Well I got news for you, boy, you ain’t any better than we are so if you are so hell bent on feedin that belly of yours, I’d suggest you climb off your high horse and earn it like the rest of us. Maybe then you wouldn’t have to live in those chains either.” He stands up, draining a third of the bowl in a few swallows and then hands the rest to one of his friends.

Damon glares at him. “You mean grovel like a shriveled gou hou, like the rest of you.”

Kane turns and drives his boot into Damon’s stomach. Damon braces for the blow but it still knocks the wind from his lungs, leaving him struggling for air against the pipe. Kane raises a fist but stops when the bell sounds. He slips his knife back into his boot and nods to his men. “Lets go.”

Damon falls to the ground as they release him with a shove, still gasping for air. The pipe drops next to him, along with his empty cup and bowl. Slaves move around him, leaving at least four feet of space between themselves and the young man with a violent reputation. But he doesn’t care; he doesn’t need their help or want their sympathy. He carefully sits up, brushing of the clumps dirt clinging to his blood and sweat. Missed his opportunity to attempt escaping, has no plan and now another twelve hours without food. He snatches up his bowl and hurls it toward the kitchen angrily.

“Hey! What you think you’re doing over there?”

Damon looks up to see a guard coming his way, reaching for his whip. Tzao gao…

“Damon, you have five seconds to get your ass moving.”

He glares defiantly at the guard and snatches up the pipe.

END FLASHBACK

Damon shakes himself from the memories and returns his attention to his food.

"Either that or he just doesn't give a shit."

Domestic = slang term for house slave used by the slaves and guards in the mines

MERZ move

LOCATION - DINING ROOM

MERZ watches and listens, intent and interested, as ROWAN explains the rules of the … simulation? … game? And then, ROWAN brings up the ranked balls again. MERZ is quite taken with the use of the technology – a true marvel for her. Holograms she has seen before, but not for such an unusual purpose. MERZ reconsiders. Unusual to her perhaps, but to civilians … maybe not. ROWAN flips the stick over her hand, an interesting bit of practiced coordination and then extends the stick (cue?) handle first towards MERZ.

ROWAN
It starts with the break. Shoot the cue ball into the rack of nine to separate them. If you sink one on the break, you take another turn.

MERZ studies the extended item, attempting to judge its frailty and/or its worth. It is beyond her ability to guess without contact and she is most reluctant.

MERZ
“Is that ‘cue’ your personal tool? Is it special or does it have worth to you? If it is, with all due respect, do you have another cue that I could use, one of lesser intrinsic value? This is new to me, and I have been known to … break things."

While more than a little interested in what ROWAN is sharing with her, MERZ is also spending part of her attention on DAMOM and BOOK and their discussion of God. Interesting the peace in BOOKs voice now, when he looked so concerned such a short time before. Before his ‘prayer’.

MERZ: “Is that ‘cue’ your personal tool? Is it special or does it have worth to you? If it is, with all due respect, do you have another cue that I could use, one of lesser intrinsic value? This is new to me, and I have been known to … break things."

Rowan is rather touched by Merz's careful consideration, however unnecessary. Looking down, she notices that the symbols for Luck, Love and Storm are turned upward, glinting at her under Serenity’s interior lights.

FLASHBACK
Her mother stared down at her wedding gift with a starkly perplexed frown that had a strong overtone of disapproval. "He is not very...traditional, is he?"

The two parts of the custom cue stick were polished black titanium, with invisible connecting joints, and at the end where her hand would be when she used it, the Chinese symbols for Luck, Love and Storm had been inlaid in platinum. The two pieces were lying on a bed of twilight blue velvet in a black titanium case with a leather carrying strap and the symbols forBlack Dragon inlaid on one corner. She was already blubbering over it, and all she'd done was tear apart the wrappings and open the case.

Smiling brightly through the tears, she took the pieces out, twisted them together and looked down the length of it. It was, of course straight and true as an arrow, and would forever remain that way. Wiping away the joyful tears, she held the stick close to her heart and beamed at her mother.

“And to think, all I gave him was an antique book from Ancient Earth.”

END FLASHBACK

Rowan smiles warmly at Merz.

ROWAN: “It’s titanium alloy, specially treated to look like lacquered wood. You can try to break it, but I doubt you’d get very far. Besides, I’m sure you already noticed this is holo billiards not the real thing so no true contact. I appreciate your consideration, but I think you’re pretty safe.”

that is comforting

MERZ reaches out and takes the cue in her right hand. For a moment she stands and just runs one hand along the length of it, assessing the size, weight, tensile strength, and flexibility. Merz fingers the faint ridge of the join in the middle, separation for storage she assumes. She runs one thumb over the inlaid symbols. The only one she believes she recognizes may stand for … tempest? She smiles faintly. This is a wonderfully crafted tool, light, strong, and wholly functional.

Resisting the temptation to step back and test how it would feel as a staff; an inappropriate move at best, MERZ steps up to the table. The white ball, the ‘cue ball’ is at one end and the ranked array of colored balls at the other. A subtle change comes over her; body language and stance shifting. She takes on ROWAN’s characteristics, observed while watching her earlier, not a perfect match but certainly representative of the other woman’s relaxed and focused pose.

MERZ
It starts with the break. Shoot the cue ball into the rack of nine to separate them. If you sink one on the break, you take another turn.
You would have to be looking to see who is speaking, the voice is ROWAN’s down to the last syllable, register and intake of breath.

MERZ walks around to the south end of the table. The illusion is not perfect, as MERZ has never observed her break before. She lines up the cue in a fair imitation of ROWAN’s technique, calculating angles in her head. Deciding on her first angle of attack, she takes a deep breath, holds it, and swings.

Jayne's turn:
LOCATION - CARGO BAY to GALLEY

Well, he couldn't just hide for the rest of the trip. Jayne would have to march up there to the galley with everyone else and take whatever he had coming. Damon, Merz, and now River seemed to all know something about the make-up, but how? Maybe Damon was broadcasting everything with a cam?

Jayne finds his thoughts running amok as he plods up the steps to the catwalk and into the galley. How in space did he misjudge the situation so badly? Jayne makes his way to one of the empty place settings and takes a seat. Ignoring the small talk at the table, he proceeds to help himself to anything in arm's reach. He glances at Rowan playing her game of nine-ball with Merz. Was she eyeing him?

Jayne sinks a fork into a piece of limp, warm, chicken-like protein. So if Rowan didn't use the Good Night Kiss on him, then... what?

Jayne lifts the fork to his mouth. It must have been poison in the tequila. Hey, sure, one of those little bottles she has could be poison.

Jayne starts chewing the food the Rowan prepared. Oh, it was delicious. Good enough to be a last meal.

Wash's Move:
Location - Wash & Zoë’s Dorm to Location - Front Hall to Location - Bridge to Location - Front Hall to Location - Galley

(Excerpted from Wash’s last move.)

(Wash’s near scream fills the dank, dark air of the dorm.) “NO!” (An electronic female voice is heard in the darkened dorm room: “The time currently is now 1630 hours Alliance ME” (a thunk is heard, as Wash’s fist hits the top of the clock). “It was all a horrible nightmare… I could have killed Zoë… I must be going mad. Rex too… What is wrong with me, maybe I need this vacation… I need a good long soak in that kê ài spa on New Hokkaido.”

(Wash sits bolt upright in bed, covered in the worst kind of nerve sweat... He stares blankly at the wall for several seconds, thinking thoughts no sane human being should ever have to deal with... He states in a shaken voice to the wall): "I need to see Rex, and Zoe … I need to see if they are ok."

(Wash goes to the ladder way and climbs up, which opens the hatch to the front hallway. As he sticks his head out of the dorm, he can see partially into the bridge, where Zoë is still standing. He realizes that he can feel a breeze where there is normally none, and can smell the faint but puzzling aroma of ... chicken? He mutters to himself in a small flash of his old self): "Maybe I should put on some clothes before I continue charting the course of crime today." (Then louder to Zoe): "Bâobèi, come down here, please..."

(Wash drops back down into the dorm, and hurriedly gets dressed, as Zoë enters the dorm they share asking): “What's up, did you get any sleep?” (Wash tosses the memory stick to her.) "Oh, that... did you view it yet, lover?" (Wash replies): "Yes, I did... Just hold it up to your face and push the little button, and it'll play back the message, and did I smell chicken out there? What happened, did we hit an asteroid covered in some strange chicken-like life form?" (Zoë, still looking at the memory stick): "No, Rowan cooked dinner for us, let's get some while we still can" (Wash, taking just a second to think about that, tells Zoë): "Ok, good idea... Hey, she fixed dinner for all of us? Wow, she's already a nicer one this time ... Cook I mean ... The last one just fixed dinner for Mal … She turned out bad, though … I'm going to check on my bridge, while you see the message, and then we can eat."

(Wash, now having dressed completely, climbs up the hatchway, and goes to the bridge, and checks on Rex, and hugs him, like he could only rarely do with Zoë ... as she rarely felt safe enough to let go, let her guard down ... He sits down, and checks the course, and runs a scan of the black around Serenity. All is apparently serene, and so, hopefully stalling long enough, Wash goes back to the hatch to the dorm, opens it, and calls out to Zoë): All finished, my lady warrior queen? I would love to escort you to the scrumptious dinner,” (She comes up the ladder, and stands there mute, and hard faced, as ever.) "Let's go" she says, and then looks puzzled at Wash): “What did you do to the clock?” (They walk together to the galley.)

(Back in Wash & Zoë’s Dorm, a smashed LCD display gently wobbles free from a small pile of plastic and metallic trash and falls to the floor, trailing a few multi-colored wires. It reads 88:35 AMT (88:35pm) and a very low squelchy, scratchy voice broadcasts: “hiss-hiss thirty-five-five-five Alli-Me Me Me-five crackle.”)

Jayne's turn:
LOCATION - GALLEY

Damon
"So what are we doin with those rails?"

Jayne suddenly stops chewing and coughs so his cheeks bulge. His eyes grow wide and dart about frantically. Gorramit! She done poisoned the food! Jayne grabs the nearest cup on the table and fakes taking a big drink, quietly spitting the contents of his mouth into it. He turns to the owner of the cup and mutters, "Sorry. Thought I was chokin'."

Jayne gets up and moves behind the counter where he disposes of the cup's contents.

Rowan's Move
LOCATION: Galley

MERZ walks around to the south end of the table. The illusion is not perfect, as MERZ has never observed her break before. She lines up the cue in a fair imitation of ROWAN’s technique, calculating angles in her head. Deciding on her first angle of attack, she takes a deep breath, holds it, and swings.

It was a power break. All 9 balls scatter on the table, rolling away from each other so quickly that Rowan finds it doubtful that any of them would have touched felt had the game been real. Several bounce back from the rail and assume positions on the table. The only one not remaining is the six, which has disappeared into the left corner at the foot of the table.

ROWAN (beaming): Gan de hao - that's called a good break. Anytime you can get balls off the table incidentally is great. Means you don't have to waste time with them later. Oh, and I didn't mention this before - if you can drop the 9 with a combination shot, you win the match automatically, no matter what. Now, you try for the 1 next.

The way the table has lined up, the 1 is on Rowan's side so she waves Merz over toward her. At the same time, she spots Jayne coming into the Galley. Remembering the towel tucked into her makeshift apron, she sends a secretive smile across the room, glancing away just as he looks at her. It'll be fun to make him wonder awhile.

Merz lifts the stick with stiff and precise movements that bring to mind soldiers going through their more artistic routines on a parade ground. It's likely she picked it up from watching Rowan's own movements, only her military training seems to be taking it to an extreme. Recalling what little she could remember from their research on the Troys, Rowan decides a little coaching is in order.

ROWAN: "Try to stay relaxed - tense muscles can affect your shot. Think of it more like meditation in motion, not so much an exercise - dong ma?"

Merz takes direction every bit as well as Rowan expected. Almost instantly, the rigid muscles in her slender shoulders go lax as she leans into the 1.

OOC: The rest of this game will be included in a blended post from Merz and Me.

Damon raises an eye brow at Jayne, watching him grab Damon's cup from the table. The 'drink' would have been believable if there had been any water in the cup, but Damon finished it long ago.

"Sorry. Thought I was chokin'."

Jayne gets up and moves behind the counter where he disposes of the cup's contents. Damon's confused gaze stays on Jayne as Damon moves toward him.

Where did Mal find this guy anyway?

He approaches the counter, spooning the last of his food into his mouth before looking up at Jayne. "You didn't answer my question."

"You didn't answer my question."

Jayne finishes a couple prominent hacks as he slowly circles the counter towards the table.

Jayne
"You done eating? We don't got lotsa time, so come on down and I'll show ya what I got laid out already."

Jayne scoops up his plate and waits for Damon, turning to watch the game for a brief moment. Rowan quickly looks down to the holographic table where Merz fires off shot after shot, but Jayne swears for at instant he sees her looking at him with a look like the cat that ate the canary.

MERZ & ROWAN move
OOC: Channain: Two Girls and a Cue Stick

LOCATION - GALLEY

ROWAN
Gan de hao - that's called a good break ... Now, you try for the 1 next.

MERZ listens to ROWAN’s words, and can hear the approval in her voice. She drops the additional rule information into the database on this ... game ... while glancing over the table to spot the 1 ball.

ROWAN waves MERZ over to her side of the table, the 1 ball was over there. MERZ moves around the table, still attempting to match ROWAN’s style with the cue, but falling a little short of the mark. Her conscious mind is trying for the correct style; her subconscious is still trying to make a rifle out of the unfamiliar tool. MERZ notes JAYNE’s entrance, but it does not detract from her concentration on the task at hand.

Rounding the table she pauses, considering angles. Deciding that the easiest and most direct target is the middle hole on her left side, MERZ leans over to line up her shot.

ROWAN
Try to stay relaxed - tense muscles can affect your shot. Think of it more like meditation in motion, not so much an exercise - dong ma?

ah. yes that would make sense. MERZ forces the tension from her arms, neck and back, willing instead the smooth motion and controlled responses from her escrima training. Not too difficult, this is just another form of stick fighting after all. She eases up on her grip, pulls back the cue and fires again, with precisely the same force as her first attempt. After all, that one had worked well.

ROWAN jumps a bit when MERZ uses another power strike to send the 1 ball home, only to have it angle upward just enough to circle the upper cup of the rail and sail off into oblivion. Chances are pretty good it might have ended up in Book's bowl, had it been real.

Adhering to the rules, MERZ rises from the table and turns to surrender the stick. In an exact imitation of Rowan's own movements, she flips the stick twice over one hand before gripping it and holds out the lower end, exactly as Rowan had when she gave her the stick in the first place.

ROWAN (inwardly): Perfect autonomic physical mimicry and muscle memory. If she isn't a Troy, I'll eat my shoe.

MERZ's knuckles are scarred up a bit, as if she's been pounding on something and fairly recently. Seeing slivers of plastic embedded in her skin, wondering what the other guy might look like, Rowan smiles gently. She takes the stick and decides a little more information on soft, solid and hard hits is definitely in order.

MERZ notices the direction of her gaze, and looks down. She had not noticed, not enough pain. MERZ picks out a couple of the larger fragments out of her skin while listening to ROWAN’s lesson. She will attend to it more fully, later.

ROWAN: "That was a good try, Merz. Only sending a ball off the table is a foul and it loses you some points. Balls sent to the floor aren't allowed back on the table, with the exception of the 9. I guess I should have let you know that your shot depends on more than the geometry. It also depends on finesse - the power you do or don't put behind the cue ball. "

Rounding to the head of the table, Rowan eyes her shot - combination with the 2 on the left, 5 on the right - and has to leverage herself up on the table a bit in order to reach. Aiming carefully, she looks at Merz out of the corner of her eye.

ROWAN: "This takes a strike somewhere on the soft side of solid. Watch my arm and you'll see what I mean." (inwardly): She's trained to learn by observing, to defeat an opponent at their own game. A couple hours at the table, watching my technique and she'll be beating me at my own game. Literally.

MERZ: ... i see. the power of the strike depends on distance from the ball, distance to the target location and the number of objects being struck ... MERZ is concentrating too hard to realize she has not spoken.

With a medium strike, ROWAN watches the cue ball rebound off the 2 as it sails into the left pocket and strike the 5, sending it into the right pocket. The cue snuggles up behind the 3, setting itself up for a nice long corner shot on the other end of the table.

Looking at Merz, she can see understanding clearly in the other woman's eyes. For the first time, Rowan doesn't feel the least bit guilty at beating a newcomer, knowing full well that in another hour or so, Merz will make a fine opponent.

ROWAN: "The rest is just practice and anticipation. Nine Ball is a game of defense. Always think about combination shots your opponent can make to sink the 9. Oftentimes the best shot you can make is one that doesn't sink a ball, but puts the cue ball in an impossible position, and sometimes even forces your opponent to accidentally line up a shot for you. Dong ma?"

MERZ
I understand. It will take a lot of practice, to reach your level of expertise. I anticipate future chances to observe and acquire this skill. But for today, duty calls. I would watch you finish this game. Once lunch is over, I must finish my task.

Under cover of the clicking balls as Rowan makes quick work of the 4 and the 7, with people’s attention potentially focused on their movement, MERZ takes a chance to make a request of ROWAN. It has taken very little time for MERZ to decide she is/could be an ally, and for some reason MERZ finds herself trusting this near stranger. MERZ speaks in a prison whisper, perfectly audible to ROWAN but entirely inaudible to the rest of the room.

MERZ
Miss Rowan, I have a request for you, and I understand if the response is negative. I must find out if I am being sought, and if possible by whom. I need any details if available. However my own cortex access will be flagged – should I attempt to acquire this data I will be painting a target on Serenity and all aboard her. This must not be. Can you do this, and keep Serenity safe?

ROWAN (inwardly): Hunh...maybe she's escaped? Wasn't there something about intervals of inactivity or somesuch? Gotta read up on all that tonight for sure. Try pinging Thal...hell, if he doesn’t know it ain't out there to be known.

Leaning into the 8, Rowan glances briefly enough at Merz to wink her right eye.

ROWAN (softly): "Méi guānxi, pengyou. Avoiding flags is what I used to do for fun. I'll let you know in the morning what I find. And you don't need to call me miss."

MERZ whispered:
I know, alikati didi. Thank you. When you require something of me, you have but to ask.

Keep the Shiny side up

Thorne's Move
Location: His Quarters/Galley

Thorne sits in full lotus on the floor of his cabin. The planning meeting has gone much as he feared it would, and he needs to calm down and regain his center. He breathes slowly; each exhalation releasing a bit of the emotional turmoil he feels.

Calmer now, he examines his reactions and finds that the trigger for his upset wasn't the cockeyed, Rube Goldberg scheme that the Captain had put together. No, it was the brief exchange between Mal and Inara as the meeting broke up. Smiling, he acknowledges that jealousy is the cause of his discomfort. Time to bring it out in the open and deal with it.

He realizes that he half loves Inara, but he's been in that state several times before. He also sees that there is something spacial between the Captain and the Companion. If only the dolt would admit to it. Thorne decides that he might take a hand in getting Inara what she wants, and with his decision, emotional forces realign, and his jealousy fades away.

That issue resolved, he begins to consider how best to act, within the confines of Mal's plan, to ensure that the cargo actually gets delivered. But his concentration is broken by a tantalizing smell leaking through the imperfect doorseals. Someone on this vessel really knows homestyle Chinese cooking. He might as well get something to eat, since the smell will bother him, otherwise.

Thorne enters the galley as Damon and Jayne are leaving through the other door. Merz and Rowan are just starting a game of nineball on the holotable. Should be an interesting contrast in styles, Thorne thinks, as he walks to the stove and begins piling his plate with the disguised protein, redolent of sesame and spices. Moving to a chair out of the way, he sits down to eat and watch the game.

Rowan’s Move
LOCATION - GALLEY

The 9 is a straight solid shot in the corner at the foot of the table. Standing straight, Rowan lowers the end of the stick to the floor, holding the shooting end in both hands. She meets Merz’ gaze again, returning the other woman’s a somewhat bashful wave as she follows Jayne out the hatchway to the cargo bay. Rowan notes that his face isn’t mangled in any sense and neither is Damon’s who follows along with them. Whatever issues Merz had wasn’t with either of them - and in any case if they had been, she would have been called down to tend to broken facial bones. It does give Rowan cause to speculate whether Troys are allowed to have inner demons. Taking out the handheld, she accesses the file and adds that thought as a notation before setting up a new game.

Looking up as she does so, Rowan glances at Mr. Thorne, contemplating the man. First he’s singing opera at the top of his lungs in a dive on Hera, then he’s doing his best to assume control of another man’s command, all the while displaying the most obvious aw shucks, ma’am demeanor she’s seen in a good long while. In her experience, fellas as observant as him generally had some manner of extracurricular training as well. Like Merz, he knew she’d been wearing colored contacts before, and didn’t seem the least bit surprised when she had to ditch them. Add it all together and it likely meant one of three things - former purple belly intelligence, former browncoat intelligence, or a whole other breed of the same species.

ROWAN (inwardly): Friend or foe, Mr. Thorne. Which will it be?

Thorne's Move
Location: Galley

Thorne finishes his plate of chickeny protein goodness at about the same time that Rowan sinks the nine ball to end the game. As Merz heads back to work, he feels Rowan's contemplative glance. 'She's a cautious one' he thinks. 'Always wants to know all the angles. Maybe that's what draws her to billiards. She's standing there right now, trying to figure out where I figure in her game.'

Never very far beneath the surface, his sense of the absurd suddenly breaches like a hump-back whale from earth-that-was. 'Well,' he smiles to himself 'let's see her fit this piece into the puzzle.'

He moves to the sink and rinses his plate, then suddenly spins, arms outstretched, and begins to sing (to the tune of 'On the Street Where You Live' from 'My Fair Lady') as he waltzes towards her.

I have often traveled in space before
But I never have seen such a lovely face before
Yes your eyes of green
Give me thoughts obscene
When I'm here on the ship where you live

When I see you I don't know what to do
You're as beautiful and slender as your billards cue
when you hit those balls
I bounce off the walls
Yes the walls of the ship where you live

And oh your wonderful cooking
how you spice that protein so fine
And you're so wonderful looking
That I can't wait for the moment you are mine

I have been in space with a lot of girls
Had intense affairs with beauties of a dozen worlds
For your love I'd quit
and to you commit
And we'd stay on the ship where you live!

Now face to face with the paralyzed Rowan, he kisses her lightly on the lips, giggles like a schoolgirl, and skips out of the room.

MERZ move

LOCATION – TRAVELING: GALLEY TO BRIDGE TO CARGO BAY

time to get to work. had enough fun for now. fun, yes … I begin to begin to understand …

MERZ gives ROWAN a rather tentative and silly little wave, as she reluctantly leaves the table, and falls into line behind the males. Finally remembering leaving her tool belt behind on the Bridge earlier in the day, she detours to fish it out from under WASH’s station.

The bridge is utterly deserted. MERZ glances around to make sure all is as it should be – autopilot is on, the cannon’s firing controls are locked down, and nothing that looks like an alert is showing on the console. Sufficient.

She carries the belt loose in her hand during the trot down to the cargo bay – won’t go under a vacuum suit and that is coming up soon. She has decided to assist Jayne and Damon first and then see who is willing to take a short walk with her.

If only KAYLEE was feeling up to it, MERZ would appreciate her knowledge of Serenity. But MERZ does not know her well enough to risk intruding on whatever problem faces her right now.

She enters the Cargo Bay and glances around for the men.

A moment after his grand exit, Thorne pops his head back around the doorframe and smiles at Rowan.

"No. I'm not really crazy. I just like to shake things, and people, up a bit sometimes. I do occasionally drink to excess, but am sober when required. I have commanded combat spacecraft in battle, quite successfully, and the habit is hard to break. An' gosh, Ma'am, playing the hick is often good cover. I've held command rank in both the Alliance and Independent forces, and obviously have secret abilities galore. I am a friend to anyone who follows the Golden Rule, and like a great man before me have sworn eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. I believe that you and I could be friends. Just please don't try and pigeonhole me. Oh, and the side pocket to your left is projecting two millimeters too far towards this end of the table. Rowan's Move
LOCATION: Galley

Rowan lifts one eyebrow at the kiss, finding Thorne's no slouch at flirtation even if his methods are more than a little unorthodox. Brings to mind something her mother said once during their "What you should know about men" discussion when she was twelve.

Be wary of the flirtatious and the flamboyant ones, beloved daughter. They will be more dangerous than those whose feelings run deep and silent.

THORNE: "Just please don't try and pigeonhole me. Oh, and the side pocket to your left is projecting two millimeters too far toward this end of the table. You should fix that. Ta."

Is he friend or foe? Asked and answered, seems like.

ROWAN: "I'll make the adjustment, thanks. And so long as you keep your intuition to yourself from now on, ài rén, I'll be sure to do the same."

Tweaking that side pocket a bit, she quickly pulls up her music library. She chooses a lively little tune captured in a cantina on one of the more desolate rim planets, possibly at the farthest point a girl could get from civilization without careening out of the system. Thinking of those tasty dark-eyed triplets, she smiles as she tucks away the hand held and shifts the cue ball to the side between the head spot and the left rail. Leaning in, she breaks the rack of 9 and sends the 3 and 5 into the left side pocket and the 8 into the right far corner.

Looking up, she smiles back at Thorne and rounds the table to go after the 2.

SAINT JAYNE

Jayne's turn:
LOCATION - CARGO BAY

Jayne walks purposefully down the steps to the cargo bay where plenty of work awaits, despite the dwindling time remaining.

"What in blazes was that woman thinking?" Jayne snaps as he approaches the remains of a shipping crate. He continues with a voice full of false concern, "Someone could slip and get hurt." He steps forward onto a fragment and dramatically slips his foot out in front of him, stumbling backwards and dropping his plate of food to the ground. The plate bounces harmlessly off the metal grate floor, but the food sprays forward into the debris.

"Now ya see, that there's exactly what I'm talkin' 'bout", Jayne nods to himself after regaining his balance. "I sure as million moons ain't sweepin' this up." He turns to Damon, and for the first time since the clean-up job Damon is given Jayne's full attention. "I done laid out the framework over by the airlock door. Come have a look. I was thinkin' we make a ramp and hinge it t'the security rings inside the airlock..."
