"I could take out their engines and comms. But the alliance would find em someday, and they'd come lookin'." Glico look to the captain "So, want me to blow 'em up?" she grinned.

Mantichorus pulled himself awake. The engines had stopped...

"Hell." He growled. As he left his quarters, he bumped into Soul. "What's going on?" He asked.

Soul shrugged. "Glico called Teela to the bridge a minute or so ago. Why?"

"The engines have stopped. Something's wrong."

The two men walked to the bridge.

"What's wrong?" Soul asked.

"Alliance Romanus-class transport bearing down on us." Glico responded. "They want the crate."

"Tzao gao. {Crap.} Trust Jerry to be wanting illegal Alliance goods shipped..." Mantichorus hissed under his breath. "Could we divert them by kickin' Wilkins out?"

Soul shrugged. "I wouldn't mind letting the Lieutenant take a long walk in space, but I don't think that those boys out there would appreciate one of their own being treated like that. I say stall them as long as you can.

He turned to Manti. "Let's you and me find out exactly what's in that crate."

Soul shook his head. "That amount could keep a border colony goin' for five years or more. Must be worth a small fortune."

"I expected something more from Jerry." Mantichorus said, suddenly forceful. "Check to see if there's anything hidden underneath the food bars."

(OOC: There teela, get us both back into it at once :)

Ebo covered the camera with her hand and turned to Teela, "Don't think we can stall him anymore. I think he's started to get mad."

"Why are we doing this again? Why can't we just give them the crate?"

"We can," Soul said, stepping into the bridge, "We got what we need out of it."

"And that would be what?"

Soul handed a package to Teela and said, "It was at the bottom of the crate, under some protein bars."

Ebo leaned over as Teela opened the package to find...

"It looks to me like an EMP generator." Mantichorus said, entering the doorway.

"Emp?" Teela and Ebo echoed as one.

"Electromagnetic-pulse. E-M-P." Soul explained.

"Oh. Right." Teela responded. "...That's a type of weapon, isn't it?"

"Electricity killer." Mantichorus confirmed, nodding his head. "All the previous portable EMP generators were lethal to organic matter for a one metre - three feet four inches - radius." He then paused. "But I could be wrong." He added, off of the look on Teela and Ebo's faces as they looked at the possible EMP device.

"Hit it, Ebo," Teela ordered.

"Whatever you say, boss!" Ebo hit the controls, and the ship lurched, nearly throwing everyone to the deckplate. "Woowee!" Ebo yelled.

Gilico spoke up. "We may need to go for hard burn if we're planning on making this run longer than just a few seconds." She turned and walked out of the Bridge. "Manti!" she shouted behind her, "I hope you know your way around engines!"

Manti grinned at Soul and then made his way down the hallyway behind Gilico.

Well, I guess that just leaves me to take care of Wilkins...

Mantichorus looked at the engine. "...Half the stuff they've chucked in here isn't actually needed."

Glico looked up. "Does that have anything to do with your current situation?"

Mantichorus grimaced and shrugged. "Only if some part we don't need shorts. Then the whole thing would grind to a halt."

"Wonderful. Well, it better not short." Glico muttered. "And could you try and be more positive?"

Mantichorus sighed. "I could try, but I can't guarantee anything." He started to work on the engine. He figured that the ship's fusion engine, while temperamental, would hold for up to five minutes of hard burn. If they managed to surprise the Alliance transport with the trick, it would put them far enough out of reach.
But the firefly's hard burn maneuver was so infamous, it was prob'ly on the syllabus at the Alliance training academies.
Ugh... Low pitch buzzing in his ears... Damn, why now?

"Do you pray?" He asked Glico.

"Not for a while." She admitted. "Why?"

"You, uh, might wanna start." Mantichorus said shakily. He then collapsed onto the floor. Glico checked his pulse.

"Still alive..." She muttered under her breath. She then glanced at the engine. It looked like it could hold under a hard burn. "Hope you know your stuff, Manti." She sighed. Hang on... was his nose bleeding?

"Hell." Mantichorus groaned, and sat up. He looked at Glico. "We gotta get Wilkins off. Now. He's packin' a laser pistol. If he finds out we're fleein' an Allaince ship with an EMP on board..." He left the rest unsaid. It didn't need to be said.

"How d'you know?" Glico demanded, her voice showing her confusion.

"I'll explain everything once we get out of this." Mantichorus promised, and wiped the blood from his nose.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A/N: Wow, easily the most I've ever written on this. And yeah, I will explain once the crew of Sidere get out of 'this'.
Oh, two more things:
1. How much cursin' is allowed?
2. Is it just me, or do we need a snappier title?
Glico flipped open the shipboard comm panel, puched a button and yelled into it
"Hang on to something!" She pulled the lever on the engine, caught her balance and ran forward. Hope the engine holds, this day is getting just a bit too interesting, she thought.
She ran down the stairs, jumped a railing, and landed still running in the middle of the infirmary. She flew down, still further to the passanger's quarters, threw open Wilkin's door, and knocked him out clean. A little too easy.
She carried him to the airlock & flushed him.
"We lose em'?" Rang out through the ship
Turning the hard burn off...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mantichorus grimaced at the engine. OK, it hadn't lasted five minutes. More like three. And it was smelling HOT. As quickly as possible, he turned the hard burn off.

"We lose 'em?" Glico's voice echoed over the intercom.

"Yesss..." Ebo replied hesitantly. "Was that Wilkins I just saw leaving?"

'Should slow 'em down some more...' Mantichorus grinned to himself. Then he frowned. He hit the intercom. "Question: do we still have the fighter he rode in on?"

Soul walked across the cargo bay towards the airlock as Gilico turned towards him.

"Why in the good gorram did you throw him out?" Soul asked incredulously.

Gilico shrugged. "Would you have rather have had him find out about the E.M.P. device?"

Soul had to agree. "Still, we just gave that Alliance ship even more reason to chase us."

Gilico opened her mouth to respond, but Manti's voice out of the intercom interrupted her.

"Question: do we still have the fighter he rode in on?"

Soul hit the switch in response. "Still sitting there, as far as I can tell. Why?"

"Well, for starters, that Alliance ship just picked up Wilkins."

Soul looked over at Gilico with a curious look that mirrored the one on Gilico's face. "So they're pissed that we killed Richie?"

Manti's voice came back. "Nope. Wilkins is still alive."

Soul's eyes widened. "He's what?"

"He's alive, he's awake, and he's pissed."

Teela heard this, and a gave small little laugh.

Manti just stared at her. "What's so funny?"

"Oh, I just remember something I read in a philosophy book."

"A philosophy book?" Manti raised an eyebrow, as if she seemed someone would never touch a philosophy book.

"Well, not so much philosophy as...not sure. Anayway, it says that if you were to take a large gulp of air before you were, say, thrown out of an airlock, then you would have about 30 seconds of air, and that the probability of you being picked up by another ship in those 30 seconds would be 2 to the power of 276,709 to one against. Seems Wilkins had some nice luck, and it struck me as funny."

"Uh-huh. This philosophy book wouldn't be called the 'Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy', would it?"

"Actually, no. It was a worst-case scenario handbook of somesorts."

Manti just said "How the heck is that a philosophy book."

"It just is. Anyway..."

Soul and Gilico emerged from the stairs and into the hallway that ran the length of the ship. Gilico turned left and headed for the engine room while Soul went in the direction of the bridge. As he stepped up the short flight of stairs, he was nearly thrown off of his feet as the ship lurched to the side. Ebo was at the controls, with Teela hanging onto the back of her chair for dear life.

Manti's voice came shouting over the intercom. "I said fancy flyin', not crazy flyin'!"

"Hey," Ebo shot back, "I'm kinda tryin' to keep us alive here, so unless you want Wilkins getting his hands on us..." She let the thought hang in the air unfinished.

Soul stepped forward, grabbing onto anything he could find to keep from falling over. "Do what you have to do, Ebo," he said. "Just buy us as much time as you can."

She grinned at him. "Sure thing," she beemed while Teela looked on in horror as Ebo jerked the controls once again.

Soul could hear Wilkins' voice screaming over the comm-link between the Firefly and the Alliance ship, but Soul ignored it, instead grabbing the intercom mike and keying up the engine room.

"Manti, he yelled, "Whatever idea you had involving Wilkins' fighter, if it's going to help us live for longer than five minutes, speak now, or..." He gulped, imagining the iminent firey death that they all faced if the Alliance ship got ahold of them. "...or forever hold your peace."

"Manti, before you go save the day in that fighter, tell me something," Ebo said into the com Soul was holding out for her, "We're gonna hit atmo in 2 minutes. Is the engine ok for that?"

"No."

"Oh good."

"We could shut her down," Soul said.

"He's right, that'd cool her off," Manti added, "Just line up your trajectory and coast on in. Buy us somemore hard burn time if we needed it too."

"What are the chances it'll start again?" Ebo asked, "Need the engine turning to land."

"Probably about 50/50." Manti said.

"Do it," Tella ordered, "And Manti, if you have any idea's regarding that fighter I'd get do doin em."

"Alright, I'm shutting her down," Ebo said, reaching up to flip the three switches above her head.

The ship hit atmo and began its wild shaking, and Ebo silently hoped the shaking wouldn't throw them too far off their trajectory.

Mantichorus took a deep breath. "Set them to overload, set the fighter adrift, and... boom. We ride the shockwave down. It should also throw the Alliance off."

There was a second pause. "Are you completely INSANE?!" Teela asked increduously.

Soul made his way through the ship to the Fighter, holding to the walls and railings as Sidere buckled through the atmosphere. He crawled through the hatch and set to work on the controlls. He heard Gilico come through behind him and settle into the other chair.

After a handfull of seconds during which Sidere's shaking got even worse, Gilico clapped her hands at the same moment Soul hit the final button.

"Done!" Gilico exclaimed.

Soul clambored out of his seat. "Then let's get out of here," he said.

The two of them had barely made it back into Sidere when the docking clamps released on the Fighter. Soul and Gilico ran back up the stairs, splitting again with Gilico running to the Engine Room and Soul heading for the bridge.

Teela turned and looked at him. "Are we set?" she asked.

Soul nodded and looked down at the console to his right as he brought up the countdown clock that he and Gilico had set up on the Fighter. "Ten seconds!" he said.

Teela grabbed the intercom mike. "Hang on!" she yelled.

Soul counted down, his arm gripping the copilot's chair. "Five...four...three...two...one...-"

The Fighter exploded, and Sidere was bathed in the light of a thousand suns.

"Don't go lookin' for me, If I get captured, you just keep on flyin and don't look back."
She walked into her fighter, grabbed onto the chair, and pulled herself up (or down depending on your orientation) to it. She strapped herself in, and disconnected her little sleek fighter from the big protective mother called Sidere.
Ballard had been colonized back a long time ago, and some fuels were found on it. It was one of the few to have actual resources, and was heralded as the first industrial colony. After about ten years the citizens of ballard noticed they were no longer able to pick up any interstellar signals. The use of the fuels put off a material which blocked all radio signals. Most of the population left, and even landing on Ballard meant a black mark on your record with the alliance. Now, all that remains there are those who have something to hide.
None of this meant very much to Glico, except that she could hide beneath the atmosphere of the planet, wait for that allaiaince cruiser to go by and hopefully knock out it's engines with a precise blast of laser fire.
She parked orbit right inside the cloud and waited.

"Is there anything in particular you'd like?"

Ebo heard Manti's voice crackle over the com.

"Hopefully not," Ebo answered, finishing typing out the starting sequence. She hit ingnition, and the engine groaned, did a half rotaion, then shuddered to a halt.

"I'd like that to be fixed. Figure you got about a minute and a half. Hope you're as good as you say you are."

"When did I say I was good?" Mantichorus asked.

"Not funny!" Ebo snapped back.

"Did you hit all of the switches?"

"Of course I did! Whaddaya take me for, a rookie?!"

"Just checking." Mantichorus sighed. He looked at the engine. "Ah, for cryin'...!" He reached into the engine. "Stupid piece of go-se...!" He muttered. He pulled out a hunk of metal from the engine.

"...What's that?" Soul asked.

"Engine is 5 degrees C above optimum temperature." Mantichorus explained. "This little doo-hickey prevents the engine bein' started 1 degree above the optimum temperature." He whacked the intercom. "Try it now, Ebo!" He shouted. He turned to Soul. "Hold on to your butt."

Ebo hit ignition and the engine burst to life.

"This is gonne be tight," she said, yanking on the controlls. Teela squezed her eyes shut. Sidere fliped ass over teakettle and righted itself.

Teela slowly opened one eye, then the other, "How close to the ground did we come?"

"I dunno, I closed my eyes too."

Back in the engine room, Soul and Manti lay in a heap on the floor.

"Ow."

"Well, that was fun. Lets not ever do it again."

The Man They Call Soul...

Soul pulled himself up off of the deck plating and grabbed at the intercom mike.

"Did we lose the Alliance ship?" he yelled.

"Ouch! That was my ear!" Ebo cried.

"Sorry."

"That explosion knocked most of our sensors," Ebo said, "but Gilico is out there waiting to make sure that we've lost them for good."

"Gilico?" Manti asked.

Soul shrugged and squeezed the mike button. "Then let's hope that she's as good as she says she is."

GLICO

Glico saw the giant allaince cruiser poke through the cloud, and tightened her grip on the controls. A few seconds that seemed like an eternity passed, while she waited and hoped they didn't notice her.
Once they were past her, she zipped around behind them, and lined up a shot.
She pulled the trigger.
BOOM! The entire tail section of the cruiser exploded, and her tiny ship was thrown backwards. As she was being pushed off, she saw two rather large gunships slips off of the much larger cruiser, and turn towards her.
She hadn't thought of that.
Glico turned the tiny fighter downwards, straight towards the planet. The gunships followed. A message appeared on her console:
ANGLE OF ATTACK TOO HIGH -- 90 degrees
TEMPERATURES REACHING CRITICAL LEVELS -- PULL UP NOW

Never mind that. Glico had other things to do. She pushed a button to open a channel to Sidere.
Something shook her ship, and sent her into a spin. She screamed "holy being that lights the sky" in chinese, and looked behind her. Her right engine was ablaze.
"You guys might want to get out of here."

The Man They Call Soul...

Ebo's voice came over the comm. "Glico's in trouble, boys. Do either one of you have any suggestions?"

Soul looked over at Manti. "Maybe using Wilkins' fighter as a bomb wasn't the brightest idea."

Manti's eyebrows crunched in concentration. "Why in the good gorram are they going through this much trouble for an EMP device?"

Soul shrugged. Then his eyes lit up. "I think we need to check that crate again. I think that there's more to this mystery that we have yet to uncover." He grabbed the mike. "Teela, tell Glico to hold on as long as she can, but I think I know what we've got on board that can help her and help us!"

"You look like you got a plan." Mantichorus stated, following Soul.

"Yep." Soul replied, smiling confidently.

Mantichorus shook his head. "I wish I had your confidence." He paused. "What do you think is still in the crate?"

The Man They Call Soul...

The two of them marched into the cargo bay and over to where the contents of the crate were strewn about the floor. Soul pulled out a knife, grabbed one of the food bars and sliced it open. A small, hollow cylinder tumbled out and hit the floor with a clang.

"What in the good gorram?" Manti said as he watched the metal cylinder fall.

Soul looked at him. "You got a knife?"

Manti pulled out a wicked looking blade and nodded. "Let's get to cutting."

The two of them sliced open every food bar that had been in the crate. Some of them were empty, but many others had small metal and ceramic parts as well as wrapped computer boards. When they were done, they gathered the parts as the ship rocked around them.

"What do you think it's all for?" Manti asked, but even as he said it, a pattern in the jumble of parts began to become clearer.

Soul smiled at him. "It's the galaxy's newest toy, one that I've heard rumor's about for years."

"An EMP gun," Manti breathed. Then he grinned too. "It's about time something went our way."

Soul kneeled down and began to attempt to assemble the weapon while Manti hit the intercom. "Hey Teela, tell Glico to hold on a few more minutes." He looked back at the pile of parts that was slowly forming into one large gun. "Her savior is on the way."

"...WhatI don't understand..." Mantichorus said, while he was helping Soul construct the EMP gun. "...Is why they only put one gorram bit of ammo in."

"Perhaps who it's bein' delivered to has more ammo for it." Soul shrugged, concentraiting on constructing the weapon.

Mantichorus glanced at the crate. He frowned. "Tyen shiao-duh..." He looked towards Soul. "I know who this is bein' delivered to."

Soul paused, and returned Mantichorus' look. "Who?"

"It's the group I worked with on Cybele... You remember, the Prefect's daughter?" Soul nodded to show that he understood. "Good group of guys."

So Sidere landed.

The Man They Call Soul...

OOC: EMP - Electromagnetic pulse. Fries electronics. So to speak.

________________________________________________

"You ready?" Soul asked Manti as Sidere settled down.

Manti nodded in response. As soon as the two of them felt the shudder of Sidere touching down, Manti hit the controls for the airlock and the two of them raced outside.

Soul raised the long gun that he and Manti had assembled and peered up into the sky, searching for the two fighters that were tailing Glico. Spying them, he raised the gun, took careful aim, and pulled the trigger.

The gun hummed, and then nothing.

Manti came over and looked over the EMP gun. "Given that we've never built, much less even seen one of these before, who's to say that we put it together correctly?"

A moment later his question was answered as one of the two Alliance fighters shuddered in mid-air, and then, as if swatted by an invisible hand, dropped like a rock and exploded in the dirt not 100 yards from where Soul and Manti stood. Manti raised his hands and let out a whoop! "May I?" he asked Soul. Soul held out the gun. "Be my guest."

Manti raised up the gun as the remaning Alliance fighter took another shot at Glico's already damaged fighter. Manti grinned and pulled the trigger.

This time the reaction was almost instantaneous: the Alliance fighter flipped over in the sky and began to fall right...for...Sidere!

"Oops," said Manti.

"Still," Soul replied, staring up at the falling ship with him, "it was a nice shot."

The Alliance fighter fell closer, closer, closer, until-

Glico's fighter ripped through the air above Sidere, firing on the falling ship and throwing off it's trajectory enough that it blew apart as it collided with the ground only a scant 50 yards from where Sidere sat.

Manti looked up as Glico made another flyby. "Now that," he said, "was a good shot."

OOC: Ah, EMP got it. Like the big thing in the van in oceans 11, yes?

---------------------------------------

Ebo and Teela trotted down from the bridge and out the airlock into the morning sun.

Suddenly there was a large explosion off to their left as the second aliance fighter smashed to the ground. "Gaaa!" Ebo screamed, jumping back and falling on top of Teela.

They scrambled up, "Wow! That was cool!" Ebo shouted.

"Did it hit my ship?" Teela asked.

"Naw," Manti said, "Its all clear."

"Too bad," Ebo said, then quickly jumped away from Teela before she could smack her.

Glico's flighter landed a little ways off and Glico jumped out and jogged over.

"Nice flying," Soul complemented.

"No, that was falling with style," Glico responded, "My fighters in bad shape."

"Sidere is too," Ebo added, "She's gonna need some hard-core fixering."

"Fixering?" Teela asked, "I don't think thats a word."

"Sure it is."

"So what now? Fix the ship or make the trade?" Manti asked.

Teela sighed, "Probably gonna hafta make the trade first to get the cash to fix the ship. How happy is this guy gonna be that we played with his toy?"
