Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

You know how for certain immunosuppressive drugs the voice-over says "tell your doctor if you've been to certain areas of the country where fungal infections are common"?

I have visions of J.Q. Doe at the doctor's office saying "'Ya know doc? I been to Texas where I might have been exposed to Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii and gotten coccidioidomycosis."

The next one says "Doc, I went to New York City and there were a lot of pigeons. I might have been exposed to Cryptococcus neoformans".

The third ones says "Doctor, I was caving where there were a lot of bats and I might have been exposed to Histoplasma capsulatum and acquired histoplasmosis."

The fourth one says "I was at the club pool yesterday - could I have gotten athlete's foot?'

The PATIENT is supposed to TELL their doctor if they have those risk factors? Really?

Isn't the doctor supposed to know more about it and ask?

Good point! You won't know your risk factors until your doctor tells you after conducting tests and screenings. Isn't that the way it usually works?
