There's so much politics going on, I thought I'd start a thread about something we can all post about, because we've all had scary days.

Since I started the thread, I'll post first.

My #1 scary day was learning that our newborn daughter had a right hemispheric Grade 4 intraventricular hemorrhage, and that she had a 50% chance of dying and a 50% chance of being "total care" if she survived. The vision that literally clouded my sight for the first few weeks was very Biblical ... I was standing in a sea, in a very dark place, and my daughter was floating in a basket away from me, and into the dark. I felt as if she was being carried away, beyond my arms.

My #2 scary day was finding a robber across the kitchen table from me one dark morning. As I stumbled, bleary-eyed, into the kitchen I heard a voice. My first thought was that I had left the radio on, but as I replayed what I heard and as my eyes started working I realized that what I had heard was "What are you doing?" and what I saw was the dark silhouette of a man standing across the table from me. Did you know that when you're REALLY scared you can't even scream because your lungs are a bit paralyzed? So there I was, screaming as loud as I could (which wasn't much) running down the hall TRYING to wake up hubby and warn him before I made it into the room. That "What are you doing" really rattled me, I thought he was some sort of nutcase, but as it turned out he was just a robber because unbeknownst to me, while I was barricading the bedroom door he was running in the other direction. I have to say, that left me with a case of PTSD for more than a year.

My #3 scary day was when I and my hubby and his brother and some friends had to grab whatever guns we had a guard a friend's house one day. Long story, but friend had a stalker who was threatening to kill him that day (This was before the laws about stalking and terrorist threats were passed).

My #4 scary ... well.... hour ... was when I discovered my true phobia of heights, on the spine-trail of Moro Rock in Sequoia Natl Park. (Not to be confused with Moro Rock in Moro Bay, which is quite lovely.)

THIS is where I lost it. Completely.

That sucker is a sheer 1000 foot drop. I never DID make it to the lookout! I was stopped by an asthma attack. The whole time, there were only two thoughts running thru my head: "Fear makes you clumsy" and "Now I know why they blindfold horses". In my lifetime, I've lost my fear of water over my head, bees and bee stings, and needles. But I still get the willies on mountain roads and anything like that.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

The scariest most recent event was getting a call from the radiology department saying I needed to come in RIGHT AWAY for more testing. Fortunately it turned out OK.

Routine scary recently is having out of control asthma and not being able to get enough air, no matter what. I really feel for anyone who was waterboarded.

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!

You sure it's asthma? I had that when I had the blood clots. Felt like I was hyperventilating but the air wasn't getting processed. If you take a couple aspirin and feel better, it might be something else, just sayin'. If it feels different than it normally does...

I think the day I woke up in shock with those clots probably would top my list, followed by the day I woke up needing my gallbladder removed because the stones had fallen out, my kid with a 104 fever and the time she drank colorsafe bleach while I was at the store, and getting the call that hubbs was getting lifeflighted from work (he wasn't as bad as they thought), watching my dad roll off a roof and break his shoulder clean apart, grandpa having a heart attack and dying while we were on vacation, cancer with both parents, that wreck I was in two years ago, my parents getting divorced, getting bit by a min-pin....

Lots of shitty days...welcome to humanity....

I'm only thinking of times when I should have been scared.
Gotta think more on it.

OK, got one.
About 13 or so, fooling around on my Godparent's farm, in the corn wagon, which was feeding into the auger. Let the corn get too much over me, so I couldn't come up for air. My best friends were pulling my arms, to no avail. I didn't think I would fit through the small slot and fall into the auger, but I wasn't able to breathe. My friends made enough noise that my Godfather got up there and yanked me out by one leg (he had to dig to find my foot). I snorted out corn from my nose a while, then went to play.

Should have been scared:
first couple of ghosts.
about to fall about 60 feet, to ground/hard sand.
motorcycle skid on Interstate in construction zone, had to make maneuver that I didn't know if I would survive or not - depended upon what my final trajectory would be, which objects were in my way - but either way, I knew I would be unconscious or unaware during trajectory.
Body surfing, stood up after a ride, standing on the wet sand, gradually looking up until I see that there is A LOT of wet sand between me and the dry sand, which means that much water is going into the wave behind me, and I need to react. I look behind me (seaward) and the wave is now blocking the sun, must be 3 or 4 times my height, and is coming down on me. I dove for the sand, in the direction of the base of the wave, never made it to the sand before the wave crashed. Got tossed around a bunch, but didn't get knocked out, and rested awhile.

I think I had a very brief moment of 'Thanatophobia' as a child an overwhelming feeling of fear when I understood I and everyone I knew would one day die but like swallowing some foul cough medicine I got rid of it I put it beyond my mind have really been afraid of much since, but I'm not an adrenaline chaser I am not a thrill seeker either.

One scary event was over 5 years ago when I received a letter after having my first mammogram done. It said the mammogram had found calcifications in my left breast and I needed a biopsy on them done. Then waiting on the results and luckily finding out they were nothing.

We had two rare cases of spinal chord tumor in our lab. If somebody had put the data together it would have been a cancer cluster. One case was my boss

He got the word that it was either something incredibly rare and fatal, or something not quite so rare and not so fatal. I didn't know that he had been told that day, but he looked: stricken. Pale. Shaken. Huge pupils. Like something had gone terribly, horribly wrong.

We talked about it afterwards and he wanted to know if it had been that obvious. To me, it was. Fortunately he had the not-so-fatal cancer, and altho the operation was tricky it was successful. But I bet that day was his scariest.

Being in a morbid frame of mind at the moment, I suppose one day we'll all face the moment when we know for a certainty that well die, and soon. I wonder what that would be like
