I got my driver's license long before there were any seat belt laws. I never used them for the same reason that happened in this tragic case; that is until a few years ago when I got a $200 ticket for not wearing one.

Wow, 200 bucks!

I got a seatbelt ticket a few years back. It was only $25 bucks. The officer told me to warn my friends. They were doing some 2 day thing where that's all they were doing was looking for people not wearing their seatbelts.

He was a real nice guy. I told him in all the years that it's been illegal not to wear it that I never have and he was the first person to catch me on it. He even told me he thought it was bullshit because he knew some stories about people who died wearing them.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yep, $200 bucks! The police had set up a sting operation at a major intersection. When cars were stopped for a red light they just popped out from the sidewalk. I kicked myself for not spotting it in advance.

The situationz in wich wearing a seat belt will be a disadvantaj during an accident are far less numerous than thoze in wich it will be an advantaj.

I started driving in 1978. Back then it wuz common for peeps to not wear seatbelts. I usually didnt.

In the early 80z I worked for a messenjer servis. I remember wen I started wearing my seatbelt.

I wuz on the off ramp from the Kennedy to the O'Hare Airport expressway in my 79 Plymouth Horizon TC3.

I wuz contemplating the damaj I woud incur if I ran full speed and slamd chest first into a steering weel mounted to a wall. Broken ribz for sure, maybe punctured lungz, crushed hart, spinal damaj... horrible. Sumtimez having a powerful imajination can be unplezent. Then, considering I wuz going 4 to 5 timez faster than I coud run, I felt really uncomfortable. So I put the belt on and felt better rite away.

Havent been in a moving car without wearing the seat belt ever sins.

I think this is one of those issues that nobody really cares all that much about. When things like driving drunk and texting and driving kill a lot of people every year, not wearing your seat belt is one of those things where if you die because of it they'll just treat you as they would a smoker and say "serves 'em right".

Everybody needs to break a law or two every once in a while. For a majority of us, driving a few miles over the limit or not wearing our seat belt is the extent of our "F You to The Man".

It bothered me when I was younger that they made the laws so that cops could pull you over for no other reason than not wearing your seat belt because depending on how big a dick the officer was they could end up ruining your day as that was their foot in the door to do a search if they wanted to or whatever else...

Maybe I'm getting lazy in my old age, but I don't care about that stuff anymore. If you're going to drive around with something you shouldn't be driving around with, just wear your seat belt. Be friendly to the officer, even if they're being dicks, and they might even let you off without paying anything.

It's been a while, but I used to get pulled over a lot and I hardly ever got a ticket. These days I pretty much drive the limit because I'm never in a hurry to get anywhere. :)

All of that advice is pretty hard to follow though when you're getting a $200 ticket for not wearing a seatbelt though. I hope you went to court over that one. There's no way I would pay that without at least trying to fight it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Maybe you are missing the point.
When the government deems that they shall require you to do something that can kill you in an otherwise survivable situation, some people consider government mandated lethal actions to be unreasonable.
For those who really want to kill themselves by wearing seatbelts, that is fine - serves 'em right. But there shouldn't be a law about it, except to confiscate funds from the public.

Nah. I see your point. I don't know what I think about it though.

I do believe that it probably saves more lives than it ends.

That being said, I never wear one, and the $25 ticket that I got didn't change my mind on that. Who knows though? Maybe a $200 would have?

No argument from me it's just another cash grab though. When they started doing "click it or ticket" and having the ability to pull you over for doing nothing wrong other than not wearing one that opened up the ability for them to perform otherwise illegal search and seizures if they wanted to as well.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Most people do better with seatbelts than without. But instead of writing a law, how about this: If you get in an accident, get tossed from the car and your head is kinda squishy and your brains are leaking out of your ears, your local trauma center doesn't have to spend tax dollars treating you, and your insurance doesn't have to pay you?

Responsibilities and authority should be balanced. If you want the authority of not belting up, then you have to assume the responsibility of not belting up.

Oh BTW- that scenery in Russia kinds reminds me of Buffalo and Ontario. Some of those highway scenes could be the NY Thruway between Rochester and Buffalo. I miss snow! (sigh) Still kinda homesick for western NY, even after decades in LA. Or maybe especially after decades in LA.

G - I agree. Hottest chics on the planet are from Eastern Europe.

But about Russians being the worst driverz, I'm not sure. They are obviously the worldz larjest exporter uv crash videoz, beating everybody else combined by at least 10x, but maybe its due to having more dashcamz than, lets say Mexico, or Tiawan. There shoud be an organized international sports organization, like for soccer. Bad Driver International Krash Association, BDIKA

I'm pretty sure we're just a few years away from all the new vehicles having some form of dash cam installed as a standard safety feature. It will likely only be higher end cars at first, but eventually there will probably be a law stating that cars must have them. Yanno, for insurance purposes.

Car Crashes Time iz the best on Youtube. Good editing, consistent video quality and good crashez. Most uv the otherz fail to edit properly andor offer crummy content.

If you can watch a dozen episodez uv this and still think youre OK without your belt, you are an idiot.

Great post. Most reasonable people agree that, for those who plan to get in an "accident" and have everybody else pay for it, seatbelts and helmets and safety glasses and elbow pads and knee pads and steel-toed shoes and diapers are excellent considerations. Like Chris Hemsworth said, that stuff is stored with the tampons.

I got another click-it-or-ticket yesterday. This time in my hometown. Love it.

I got to talking with the officer and he said that the city goes along with some federal program during the month of may.

I asked him when he noticed that I didn't have it on and he said that he spotted it when he was driving toward me on the other side of the road (he did pull a u-turn, but went in the other lane at first and only pulled me over after he was just about to pass me). I said "no shit, Hawk Eye?". He laughed and that's when he told me that his job that day was to pull over everybody not wearing a seat-belt.

I think if the police have time to put people out on the streets to do nothing but pull over people not wearing a seatbelt that there are too many police on that force and it's time to make cuts.

I'm considering fighting the ticket. I could just ask them for video or photographic evidence if the cop does show up (which would be a 2nd day of tax payer dollars wasted on his salary).

Judging the ROI on this one though, I'm probably just going to pay it. It's probably not a good idea to imply that a cop in my hometown was lying just to get out of a $25 fine.

At least I learned something though. Chances are the large cracks in my windshield aren't going to get me a ticket any time soon. Somebody with his skills no doubt noticed it that close up.

I don't personally have any reason not to wear it other than it's uncomfortable.

My brother was T-Boned 15 years ago though and they had to pull him out from the passenger side with the jaws of life. The emergency crew told him the only reason he was alive was because he was not wearing a seatbelt.

A good friend rolled his car on the Interstate during deer season, the driver's seat was completely squashed - he got extracted from his wife's lap. The extraction personnel told him that the only reason he was alive was because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. He still had to wear a neck brace for months - the kind with the 4 poles and pins in his skull.
