Smart cities can be vulnerable: That Dallas emergency siren hack is a warning of things to come

By infrastructure-hacking standards, the overnight triggering of the Dallas storm-warning system on April 7 was relatively benign.

Starting at about 20 minutes before midnight more than 150 sirens across the city of 1.3 million people blared periodically, alarming residents in this tornado-prone part of the country.

Worried that something was amiss, locals overloaded the city’s 911 emergency-calling system, causing what could have been harmful delays, while officials scrambled to figure out what was going on. They shut down the system at 1:17 a.m. and worked overnight with West Shore Services, a Michigan-based company hired by the city last year to maintain the network, to fix the problem, according to local news reports.

Initially officials suspected a technical malfunction, but by Saturday afternoon it was clear that someone in the area had duplicated a radio signal used to trigger the sirens. It took city officials most of the weekend to put the system back online, and as a temporary fix they added a layer of encryption to the transmitters on the sirens, making them harder to hack.
...

Researchers routinely find vulnerabilities in municipal hardware and software, including with traffic lights and smart parking meters. But some of the biggest concerns lie with what’s referred to as the kinetic hacking of municipal water, power and sewage systems, said Vyas Sekar, a faculty member at CyLab, Carnegie Mellon’s Security and Privacy Institute.

When will they learn?

It always makes me smile when I hear about stories like this because maybe... just maybe... people might wake up and STOP DOING STUPID SHIT LIKE THIS.

I'm glad the article mentioned the concerns about water reclamation. These hackers were probably just really smart kids having a little fun, and wreaking a little havoc, but who's to say that it wasn't just a test run of something bigger? Maybe the next time the citizens of Dallas are treated to a mega-dose of chlorine or fluoride or some other chemical in their drinking water?

But these assholes never learn, do they? They automated things because they thought they could save a buck by firing human labor. Now the solution to the problems that technology brings is.... you guessed it... MORE TECHNOLOGY!!!!!

Pull the plug bitches. Ain't nobody ever watched Terminator 2 up in this mofo?

Man.... bad bought of insomnia last night. I still haven't gotten any sleep....

I finally got around to watching the last Black Mirror episode called "Hated in the Nation" last night though, and wow does it ever relate to this post 1kiki.

I'd send you the youtube link, but it's all distorted to get around the copyright. If you haven't seen it you got to check it out.

The hack raid sirens!

I have an uneducate theory about this. Remember in the early days of computers when a computer malfunction was to blame for everything? Now it's a hack. it's the perfect cover for "we fucked up" or "it doesn't work"

Thanks. I figure a whole industry can be created now. First we have to invent a specific made up technology that Russian hackers use. Call is Rushak, because I'm not feeling imaginative today. Then create the rushak blocking tech. License it for billions. Any mediabot will buy some because th media told them to.

lol

Either way, at the end of the day the automation that was supposed to save money ends up costing a lot more in the long run and now the tax dollars are going to beefing up the tech instead of creating jobs for residents.

Then we're also putting vital community resources in the hands of large, likely multi-national corporations, who don't give a shit about anything besides the bottom line.

And Terminator 2.

Just a general comment - with our government spying on and hacking us, and business spying on and hacking us, and black hats spying on and hacking us, and grey hats spying on and hacking us, and foreign governments spying on and hacking us ... and all of them either colluding with each other or in an arms race against each other ... the only guaranteed losers are us.

We are defenseless against the array of gargantuan interests, and have been for a long time.

There's only one winning move in that paradigm, kiki, and it's so obvious I shouldn't have to say it.

Whether you're going to the city or away from it, you're still on the city road. It might be a good time to get off the road.

I also do want to point out that many things people think of as science fiction are true today. So, even though we don't quite live in a total surveillance society - yet - it's pretty close.

Now, the entire planet doesn't live that way. I'm sure there are peasant farmers in China, herders in Siberia, hunter-gatherers in the Kalahari, and so on, who aren't personally, individually tracked and/ or recorded. And as long as they stay away from the media, they won't be personally touched by its corrosion.

But global events know no bounds. Global warming will change their lives. So will species extinction. Or nuclear holocaust.

We should know about what's going on, instead of living in our personal bubbles.

1kiki... 3 things you've talked about today...

You REALLY need to watch "Hated in the Nation", the last Black Mirror episode.

They're all pretty damn good, but that's one of the top 5 episodes of all three seasons and it hits a lot of things that we've been discussing here.

You should watch it too DT. I think they're all on Netflix. I'm pretty sure that Netflix picked it up for the 3rd season. They're all made in the UK. It's a lot like Twilight Zone but everything centers around tech we have today and what could happen in the future with it.
