Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

But, let me note: NOT TRUMP'S DOING.

Or can't you tell the difference between Obama fostering a coup in Honduras; and another in Ukraine and leaving that country a smoking ruin; bombing Libya, and leaving THAT country a smoking ruin crawling with jihadists (who then went to England to bomb a concert); fostering a coup in Syria AND bombing it AND sending arms to jihadists and leaving THAT country way beyond being a smoking ruin; drone strikes by the hundreds - 563 strikes to be exact; and creating a relentless program of spying and data collection ...

... and Trump inheriting all that?

Obama inherited a bunch of bullshit too. But the moment he ordered his own drone strike, I hated him, and he proved himself to be as much a part of the deep state nonsense as anyone before him.

I will say I have no proof of the following, but I'm not convinced that Trump doesn't represent a war between factions of the deep state, and that Trump falling into line the way he has indicates a mending of that divide. He has never seemed like an anti-establishment candidate to me, just a pro-corporate pro-establishment candidate who says a lot of abhorrent things, so people think he's just an honest talker instead of a fool.

However, I don't think we'll agree on anything from this point on, and I also don't think we'll convince each other, so beyond trying to answer your question I don't believe I can contribute much more to this conversation.

I'm of two minds about Trump and his relation to the Deep State.

He's done stuff that looks like he's on board - bombing a Syrian airfield - and then stopped. His words go in all directions. He goes back to reopen agreements everyone assumed were settled.

I don't think we'll know what Trump is about until we see how it shakes out on balance. That's why I keep asking what Trump has DONE.

But so far, he still seems to be focused on ISIS and not Russia as the enemy. That, to my mind, is an anti deep state direction.

Trump watches too much TV. I think Trump's mind was warped by the media's obsession with American weapons, which sanitizes violence and makes it harder to think critically about why Presidents use deadly force.

Trump has done nothing tangible but kill some children in Yemen. Also a federal court told the president directly that he’s lying. Neither is much of a positive accomplishment for Trump.

A substantial majority of the judges who sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond delivered a rather remarkable judgment last week: The president of the United States is not to be believed. I concur with the Court’s majority opinion.

Botched raid. Let me add, bombed Syrian air field.

As for the fourth circuit ruling, the majority opinion didn't call Trump a liar. It didn't even say he was 'not to be believed'. Here's the ruling. Find your claims - if you can. http://coop.ca4.uscourts.gov/171351.P.pdf And it will probably go forward to the Supremes. It's not a done deal.

So, ACCORDING TO YOUR LIST - Trump's not bad. He's certainly not worth the endless howling you've been doing from BEFORE day one.

FDR 1933-45, Truman 1945-53, Eisenhower 1953-61, JFK 1961-63

I was born late '42, so of course, too young to remember FDR.
3 Terms, he was incredibly popular. Guess Truman's popularity
was about average. "I like Ike" was a campaign slogan; but no,
we loved Ike. JFK & Jackie were as royalty to many folks.

For those of us old enough, I often say, "We all remember where we
were & what we were doing when we heard that Kennedy had been shot."

Been all downhill from there?

According to my list, Trump is a zero. He tried to kill Obamacare; is poorly administrating it; but the legislation to kill it has not passed yet. He has not heaped trillions of dollars on his buddies because the legislation has not passed yet. He hasn't built the Mexico/Texas wall because the legislation has not passed yet. He hasn't made a dent in the illegal alien population because the legislation has not passed yet. All his eventual "accomplishments" will really be better credited to the Republican party, not Trump, because he is mentally disorganized.

The court did call Trump a liar.

http://coop.ca4.uscourts.gov/171351.P.pdf page 51, where EO-1 is Trump’s Executive Order. The opinion mentions "Bad Faith" which is defined as intent to deceive. Ordinary people call it lying. In existentialist philosophy bad faith is refusal to confront facts or choices.

Plaintiffs here claim that EO-2 invokes national security in bad faith, as a pretext for what really is an anti-Muslim religious purpose. Plaintiffs point to ample evidence that national security is not the true reason for EO-2, including, among other things, then-candidate Trump’s numerous campaign statements expressing animus towards the Islamic faith; his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States; his subsequent explanation that he would effectuate this ban by targeting “territories” instead of Muslims directly; the issuance of EO-1, which targeted certain majority-Muslim nations and included a preference for religious minorities; an advisor’s statement that the President had asked him to find a way to ban Muslims in a legal way; and the issuance of EO-2, which resembles EO-1 and which President Trump and his advisors described as having the same policy goals as EO-1.

My quick answer: Somewhere along the line, we lost respect, values.
Maybe more accurately: we didn't impart our respect & values to our kids.

The TV did ... now the Internet does.

When I was a child, the Husband was the bread winner; the Wife was the
HomeMaker. Nowadays, there're way more families where both parents
have to work to make ends meet.

What was it that drove the cost of living up & changed our way of life?

Hmmm. Are we there yet?

1kiki, you did not understand the Court's ruling. Not any page of it at all. From page 12:

The question for this Court, distilled to its essential form, is whether the Constitution, as the Supreme Court declared in 1866, remains “a law for rulers and people, equally in war and in peace.” And if so, whether it protects Plaintiffs’ right to challenge an Executive Order that in text speaks with vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination.

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment yet stands as an untiring sentinel for the protection of one of our most cherished founding principles—that government shall not establish any religious orthodoxy, or favor or disfavor one religion over another.

Congress granted the President broad power to deny entry to aliens, but that power is not absolute. It cannot go unchecked when, as here, the President wields it through an executive edict that stands to cause irreparable harm to individuals across this nation. Therefore, for the reasons that follow, we affirm in substantial part the district court’s issuance of a nationwide preliminary injunction as to the challenged Executive Order.

I will add that the court in the next 100 pages called Trump a lying sack of shit, but in the most polite legal terms possible.

It still didn't say Trump lied. Or even acted in bad faith. All they concluded was that arguments HAD BEEN MADE BY OTHERS to that effect. That procedurally allowed them to go beyond the TEXT of the Executive Order to the CONTEXT, to try to divine what might be on Trump's mind. I find that kind of silly, myself. No one has telepathy. Anyway, to go beyond text to context, they relied on previous rulings in previous cases, which I read. Did you? TO ME, it appeared they stretched precedent beyond where it should have gone. And in fact, that was the dissenting argument.

With any luck, it'll head to the Supreme Court.

Please note that the court didn't actually rule on the Executive Order itself. In fact, it admitted, right in the beginning, that there was no basis for an injunction, as the Order itself was well within Trump's authority.

I put that in green to help you focus your attention on the salient issue.

I don't know if these 2 have been mentioned:
Relocating the American Embassy in Israel. Apparently Trump promised during the campaign that he would move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel's Capital city. I have heard that he has now decided to break this promise. Although it might mean that he'll move it to another city (there has been much discussion), I gathered that it meant that he won't move it at all.

Rebuilding the military (Department of Defense). He had promised during and after the campaign that he would restore funding to the DoD to rebuild/restore the dilapidated strength, material, and resources of the military to a state of readiness. Senior officers seem to claim the budget as submitted fails to even attempt this.

Sometimes I suspect that Libtards have forgotten - or at least feverishly deny to themselves - that THEY hand-picked Trump to be the Liberal lifelong Democrat to represent the GOP in the election, specifically to be Hilliary's foil for her annointment. Trump was the one candidate that they supported, tilted the news for, and even voted for in the GOP Primaries.

Now, when us conservatives are sitting back to see what plays out, the Libtards are the ones whining the most!

Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said that the president is making good on his vow to save Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, among other things, and said that they are not kicking anyone off who needs the programs.

Here's where the president's proposal breaks his promises — and at times his own self-proposed contract — to voters.

Broken Promise #1: Trump vowed not to cut Medicaid
Trump's budget would cut Medicaid by a lot, despite the president telling the Daily Signal days before launching his White House bid, "I'm not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I'm not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid."

The administration proposes reducing spending on Medicaid programs by more than $600 billion over the next decade, a massive cut that appears to go on top of $839 billion in Medicaid cuts included in the House health care bill Trump is supporting.

Mulvaney insists that the proposed reduction in spending isn't a cut — it's simply growing less than the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office expects the needs of the program to be. "There are no Medicaid cuts in terms of what normal human beings would call cuts, we are not spending less money than we did the year before," Mulvaney said.

Broken Promise #2: Trump said he wouldn't cut Social Security
Trump's budget proposes slashing the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), a $31.4 billion change to the program that pays monthly benefits to over 10 million disabled individuals under the retirement age.
Mulvaney argued that SSDI isn't "what most people would consider to be Social Security" and said he would "hope" less people receive the program once they remove individuals who "should not" be getting it. It's unclear how the administration determined there is that much fraud in the system.

Broken Promise #3: Trump said he'd fully fund the border wall
The president promised to fully fund a border wall, with plans to make Mexico pay for it later, in his "Contract With the American Voter." The president's budget would allocate $2.6 billion for planning, designing, and constructing the border wall and its surrounding securities, but Republican leaders estimate the wall could cost as much as $15 billion.

"While we did not get as much money as we wanted for 2017 omnibus we did get a lot," Mulvaney said. "We are going to continue to press on."
Broken Promise #4: Trump promised to cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities

This is another contract promise. Trump's administration has tried to restrict funding to so-called "sanctuary" cities — jurisdiction that don't enforce federal immigration priorities and cooperate fully with federal authorities — but their efforts were halted by the courts.

This budget doesn't include any kind of limit on federal funding, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions narrowed the scope of Trump's executive order on the issue in a memo Monday.

Broken Promise #5: Trump said he would increase funding for treatment of PTSD
Trump's budget would increase funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs, but the budget proposal doesn't appear to focus money on PTSD or mental health issues.
It would, however, slash $3.2 billion from the "individual unemployability" benefit, which the budget says will be "modernized." The program allows the VA to more fully compensate disabled veterans, including those with PTSD, whose disability renders them unemployable.

Broken Promise #6: Trump told police union leaders he'd find more funding for training Trump promised resources for training in his voter contract, as well. This budget aims to increase funding for more border agents and immigration judges, increased immigrant detentions, and fighting the opioid crisis, but it does not earmark additional funds for training police.

Broken Promise #7: Trump promised to bring down the debt "fairly quickly"
Barring the kind of hyperbolic growth Trump has promised and economists have disputed, Trump's budget would do little to combat the national debt. Rather, it would potentially increase it.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

There are only three promises that I want Trump to keep. (Do you remember what they were? I repeated them often enough!) The rest of them ... well, being domestic issues I believe they were out of his control in any case, and in the hands of Congress.

So given that the Dems can stalemate much of the GOP agenda in Congress, I was hoping ... expecting ... they'd be broken/ unfulfilled.

Rather than endlessly repeat your 3 promises, please use your Blog Entries, which show on the Home page under “Latest Blogs”. Blogs is just below “Recent Blue Sun Room Postings”. For example of the latest entry: http://fireflyfans.net/blog.aspx?bid=9647

Signym’s never used blog is at http://fireflyfans.net/bloglist.aspx?u=1606
1kiki’s is http://fireflyfans.net/bloglist.aspx?u=41207

I picked this as an example of a Blog Entry. It's a big idea, succinctly expressed:

The American working class has strongly supported the wars undertaken by the United States, and it can see that by never winning them, the United States has always lost them. The American heartland has always been emotionally invested in global power. Successive defeats in war left deep wounds in its collective consciousness, as did the indifferent respect paid to veterans returning from the battlefields. That the country with the world’s most powerful military had so often been unable to prevail over its enemies, the heartland attributed to faint-hearted and feckless leadership. Hurt pride resulted in simultaneous calls for a complete withdrawal from foreign adventures, and for an unrestrained use of military force. Leaders such as Trump seem to emerge easily in countries with a colonial past—the United States, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and also Russia. Collective memories of being at the center of the world, or at least of a world of one’s own, seem to make it more difficult to accept relegation to the status of one country among others.

O wie ist alles fern und lange vergangen (Oh, how far away and long has passed) is a sentiment that an entire people can share.

Trump at last has a soul mate in whom to confide, Anthony Scaramucci, the White House’s new communications director. “Mooch”, or “Mini-me” to Washington insiders, Scaramucci is Trump’s knee-capper. Good cop, meet seriously bad cop.

Scaramucci is the personification of Trump’s deep brain. To the extent that the president ever withholds a thought, Scaramucci is there to express it for him. He’s his human Twitter feed. What Scaramucci says, Trump thinks. Thanks to The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza, we’re privy to enough premium quotes to entertain ourselves for months.

Lizza, a polite, erudite fellow, did what reporters sometimes do: He taped his conversation with The Mooch, capturing a hailstorm of profane tirades against leakers and, specifically, Priebus — “a (expletive) paranoid schizophrenic.” He also made foul reference to senior adviser Steve Bannon performing Ripley-esque acrobatics that can’t be described further here. You should probably not classify 100,000,000 people based off of your very smallish demographic of Texas Republicans that you personally know.

Did you watch Firefly? Serenity? Read the Serenity comics? Did you see Mal or River peacefully negotiate with their enemies? Or kill them? That kind of murderous entertainment only works (also see Game of Thrones) with an audience that looks admiringly upon dealing out death.

The same thing could be said about guns & ammo sales in the USA of $13.5 billion. Although more deer and ducks than people die, a lot of people are murdered.

Then there is the Pentagon's budget of $585 billion. That isn't what the USA needs for defense, that is what it needs for massive warfare, and your Congressman who voted for that budget will get reelected specifically because he is a hot-headed warmonger. This is what 100 million American voters want. It is baloney to claim that the Deep State is mainly responsible when it is the American voters' preference.

Did you know that the American anti-war sentiment of the 1960's faded away in the 1970's to a ghost once the draft ended? 100,00,000 American voters are NOT opposed to war; they're opposed to personally fighting in a war.

Trump, as a teenager, was an early adopter of loving war, but not fighting a war. Because of that enlightenment at such a young age, Trump certainly understands what the people want today.

I'd leave the psychology to the psychologists.

That being said, I have no idea at all anymore what you are saying and where you are getting your 100 million voters claim. Everything else you posted in the thread makes it sound like you're saying this about Republican voters, but that first part out I quoted there betrays that idea.

I'm willing to bet that more than half of the people who loved Firefly and who currently love Game of Thrones would say they are Democrats. That's just going based off of the fact that the younger you are the more likely you are to call yourself a Democrat, and the current demographic breakup of Game of Thrones by age is very likely as young as the average viewer of Firefly was when it came out.

So.... what are you saying?

136,669,237 voted in November for President. Maybe a quarter of them are anti-war. That leaves about 100,000,000 pro-war voters. The pro-war voters keep voting for the same Congressman in the House of Representatives who approved a $535 billion Pentagon budget. I say that makes it the voters’ fault when the USA is constantly at war.

You might be surprised to know that 97% of Congressmen were reelected in 2016. The voters must really like their warmonger Congressman.

Other countries that don’t have huge War Department budgets can’t afford to go to war all around the world. Only the USA can. And because it can, it does, thanks to the voters returning the same old Congressman that voted to increase the Pentagon’s budget.

Remember, 97% got re-elected. The voters are in love with their Congressman. Not even 97% of marriages last two years, but voters keep returning the same old Congress every two years. I’d say that is why problems never get solved. Same old Congress = Same old unsolved Problems. You would think the voters would learn, wouldn’t you? I thank God every time an Old Congressman dies in office, since that is the only sure way to a better future. I pray for the bad health of Senator Ted Cruz.

I think it might be that in a couple of years’ time, we’ll think it was a great thing that Trump won. Because if he’d lost, and Hillary had won, she’d have been the most hated president of modern times, and then Trump and Bannon would have used that to build an alt-right media empire, create an avalanche of hatred, and then there might have been a more disciplined candidate the next time round, rather than someone impersonating a competent leader. Because he lied about who he is, Trump may in truth prove to have been the self-absorbed person who ruins the populist brand in the United States.

You seem to think that populism is a bad thing - that people should stop hoping for a government that represents them, and just accept the will of their masters who engineer their future.

You didn't like the populism of Sanders; you don't like the populism of Trump. OTOH you really do like the globalist fake-liberalism of Hillary and the people she represents, who want to divide people over bathrooms in order to deny them jobs for profit.

Your pov is becoming much clearer. At first I thought you are simply a neurotic partisan, and that you just can't help yourself. But if you TRULY BELIEVED / Texans/ republicans/ USers/ 'people'/ are too stupid to vote their own interests, you'd be completely secure in the idea that populism will just wither away from sheer lack of intelligence. Only you're not. You think that populism as a concept needs to be specifically killed, maybe even by one horrific Mr. Trump experience.

So your constant railing against Trump is a far more self-interested and intentional attempt to kill populism than neurotic accident.

What IS neurotic is you spending so much time and energy at it on one very obscure part of the internet.

SECOND, I'm trying to find a rational, realistic narrative in your constant splatterings here, and quite honestly it's hard to tell WHAT you're saying. You've just referred to a SCIENCE FICTION SERIES, fer chrissakes... a science fiction series dreamt up by a quintessential coastal-style progressive BTW ... to support your views on what working-class Americans think and feel?

It's clear, though, that you hate working-class Americans, whom you conflate with the ever-hated Texas GOP.

What you don't seem to realize is that you ... yes, YOU ... are as big a problem as the people that you despise.

Quote:

Successive defeats in war left deep wounds in its collective consciousness, as did the indifferent respect paid to veterans interventionists returning from the battlefields. That the country with the world’s most powerful military had so often been unable to prevail over its enemies "tyranny", the heartland elites attributed to faint-hearted and feckless leadership. Hurt pride resulted in simultaneous calls for a complete withdrawal from foreign adventures, and for an unrestrained use of military force against Russia. [INTERVENTIONIST] Leaders such as Trump Obama seem to emerge easily in countries with a colonial past—the United States, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and also Russia. Fixed it for you.

It's the "progressives" who howled to overthrow Tito, Saddam, Yanukovich, Qaddafi, Assad, and have lined up against Putin, on the basis that they are "tyrants" .... without ever noticing that we do business quite nicely with our own set of cooperative tyrants, jihadists, and neo-Nazis.

It seems to me that you think that we can overthrow anyone, destroy any nation, kill any number of people, and all should be forgiven because you "meant well". That YOUR way of thinking and YOUR morality is so "special" that you feel free to impose it with the nosecone of a missile, and that YOU can't accept being merely a nation among nations, and not "the indispensable nation" (as Obama has said, more than once). Yanno, a little self-reflection would do you good.

Quote:

Hmm... where did you pull that stat from ... out of your ass?

People voted for Obama over Hillary in part because HE voted against the war in Iraq, while she voted for it. People voted for Trump in part because HE promised to restore better relations with Russia while she promoted a more "kinetic" approach to Syria.

People can be driven to war, it is true. A relentless media campaign can cause the heartland to become so fearful or liberals to become so outraged that they will take to the streets to demand blood. And despite the fact that you ... the supposed intelligent liberal elite... have seen this over and over again, you keep falling for the same bullshit again and again.

Like I said, a look in the mirror might do you some good. YOU are part of the problem, hon.

Okay, now for the promise that Trump has broken that I thought was the most important: making nice with Russia. And hopefully by extension, not meddling so much in the Mideast and elsewhere.

It seems to me that Trump has repudiated CIA-based "regime change" model, which is good. On the other hand, he seems to have thrown his lot in with the military, and THEY seem to be as nucking futs as the CIA .. steaming carriers here there and elsewhere, and firing missiles at whomever they please.

At best, it will generate significant international backlash. At worst, it will trigger a global war. Our military can't attack n Korea without triggering China, and can't attack Iran without triggering Russia. And then what?

If Trump truly meant what he said, then he's going to have to get rid of the military nut-cases in his staff, as well as the spooks in the staff.

KIKI- I agree. No quid pro quo between the Dems/ Awan for the CIA backing off on "Russia!". Rip the bandage off.

Funny story I read in the paper and online: Wasn't it a certain Mr. Trump who bombed Syria not too long ago. He ordered to destroy an airfield runway (or some such), or am I mistaken?

Isn't Syria backed by Putin The Shirtless!?

Curious way to making nice with our Russian pals, isn't it?

P.S. I wonder how he's going to blame this on Obama/Hillary?

Well, I see somebody has the nerve to tackle this promise besides me.

It seems to me that, as I have said before, there has been an ongoing conflict between the State Dept/ CIA (Obama's and Hillary's go-to group) versus the Pentagon (Bush's go-to group) and nowhere is this more apparent than in Syria: they have been dissing, undercutting and sniping each other since the beginning of "regime change".

Now that the CIA program of funding jihadists in Syria has ended, and the military has been given more-or-less free rein to conduct its actions anywhere in the world (eg MOAB in Afghanistan), it's as if the Pentagon - like a pupil eager to show up a hated classmate - is trying to show that it can do "the job" "better" than the CIA.

Unfortunately, it looks like the military is being allowed decide "what" "the job" is, not just how to do it. Trump isn't providing essential civilian guidance to our military.

Trump's choice for chief of staff, Gen John Kelly, is following the Trump line: Make nice with Russia, but antagonize Iran, N Korea, and China.

I understand the grotch against N Korea. I think that they way we've been handling N Korea for the past 60ish years (threats and sanctions) has been incredibly ineffective, and "more of the same" isn't going to get us anywhere new, but still...

I also get the grotch against China, altho I think the issue is primarily economic, not military.

But Iran??? Every military person that Trump appointed - Flynn, Kelly, Mattis, McMaster - has an intense suspicion/ hatred of Iran.

Any thoughts on why this is so?

McMaster And Mattis [SHOULD] Have Twelve Months To Succeed In Afghanistan

Authored by James Durso via RealClearDefense.com,

Recently we learned that Erik Prince, founder of the security firm Blackwater Worldwide, and Steve Feinberg, financier, and owner of DynCorp International, a leading military logistics, and training contractor, approached the Secretary of Defense, Jim Mattis, with their plan to use contractors instead of American troops to stabilize Afghanistan. The meeting was arranged at the behest of President Trump’s advisors who want to ensure their boss is apprised of the full range of options in Afghanistan.

The Secretary decided to stick with an in-house solution, that is to say, more of the same, for a war we are, in his words, “not winning.” Secretary Mattis is no enemy of contractors, but hopefully, he reflected on what Messrs. Prince and Feinberg said before he briefed President Trump last week on the way ahead in Afghanistan.

Let’s review our progress in Afghanistan:

Provinces under central government control: according to data from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, “the Afghan government controls or influences just 52 percent of the nation’s districts today [February 2017] compared to 72 percent in November 2015.”

*Opium production increased 43% from 2015 to 2016 and has been on an upward trend since 2001.

*U.S. casualties: 2385 dead and 20,290 wounded military; 1691 dead contractors.

* Money spent: over $700 billion, though some analysts say the true cost is in the trillions.

I previously said we should let the Afghans and the neighbors – Iran, Pakistan, and China – try to sort it out, and minimize our work with Afghanistan to counternarcotics and intelligence sharing while we work with the Central Asian states to secure their borders. During the campaign, candidate Trump described the war in Afghanistan as “a complete waste” and has focused his efforts since inauguration on everything else, leaving the policy review to the national security advisor, Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, which brings us to the problem…

General McMaster spent several months trying to convince the President to commit more troops and agree to a four-year timeline in advance of May’s NATO summit meeting; he was blocked by the secretaries of Defense and State. McMaster then made a second try at last week’s National Security Council Principals Committee, only to get pushback from Trump. Seen in that light, the suggestion that the White House would consider the Prince-Feinberg plan was a billboard-sized hint that the President does not want a more-of-the-same solution.

There is no Afghanistan “policy vacuum,” General McMaster has simply forgotten that it is his job to get in sync with the President, not the other way around. His thinking is emblematic of the military’s approach to sunk costs – the dead and wounded soldiers – as opposed to a businessman’s. The military may be reluctant to abandon a political objective if it feels doing so will dishonor the sacrifice of the soldiers who died and were wounded trying to achieve the objective. It is an understandable sentiment, but illogical to someone with a business background asking for a solution to a $700 billion campaign almost two decades old and with no end in sight.

President Trump understandably wants to see if his administration can stabilize Afghanistan, so using contractors may give him the option to try something new while reducing military casualties that grab the headlines. (He is no doubt aware that the parts of the country that provide most of the military’s troops are part of his electoral base.)

If President Trump approves a McMaster plan that Mattis is comfortable with, as Defense will have to be on board, he should give them twelve months – not four years - to show real progress – not PowerPoint progress - defined as more provinces under central government control, and a sharp reduction in opium cultivation. Metrics such as the number of Afghan police and soldiers trained are merely inputs, not the only output that counts: the provision of public safety in Afghanistan’s ungoverned spaces.

The U.S. has been militarily and diplomatically engaged in Afghanistan for 16 years so cries for “more time” ring hollow. Messrs. McMaster and Mattis are not new to Afghanistan so they can start implementing their good ideas immediately.

Most importantly, a twelve-month deadline will give the President the option to fire McMaster or Mattis before the November 2018 elections if the “M&M” plan fails to show progress. The President needs to heed President Bush’s mistake of not firing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld before the 2006 election, which contributed to the Democrats gaining 31 seats in the House of Representative and 6 seats in the Senate, giving the Democrats control of both chambers, until the GOP took back the House in 2011 and the Senate in 2015.

And to any caviling about domestic concerns affecting our foreign policy, I say, “Darn right. Why shouldn’t they?” Foreign and defense policy should not be a consequence-free zone for the staff practitioners, who have to answer to elected officials who take seriously their obligation to keep their promises to the voters.

Here's a perfect example of what a nutcase, sham you are. You ask a question and wait 12 minutes for an answer and since I'm busy with RL, you can't hold your bladder so you make up an answer for me. (Of course it's wrong, but whatever - accuracy and honesty have never been your thing).

SIGGY = Russia First, above all things.

Here's a question: what are Russia's interests?- GSTRING

Here's a perfect example of what a fraud and a liar YOU are: I have asked this question, on and off, for OVER EIGHT MONTHS.

I have asked YOU, GSTRING, specifically, and your cohort of know-nothing trolls specifically, individually, collectively and generally, and - not having gotten an answer from ANY of you- I crEated a thread BACK IN NOVEMBER for this question. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=60986 and have not gotten an answer from YOU, GSTRING, nor from any of your cohort of know-nothing trolls (sockpuppets?) despire the fact that I have asked this question repeatedly before, during and after that thread.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT I HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION MULTIPLE TIMES FOR OVER A YEAR. YOU CAN'T PRETEND THAT YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THIS QUESTION BEFORE WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE THE LIAR, JACKASS, IDIOT, AND TROLL THAT YOU ARE.

IT'S NOT LIKE YOU HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO THINK ABOUT AN ANSWER. This was not a snap quiz on an unfamiliar question and ... damn- YOU MANAGED TO AVOID THE QUESTION, AGAIN.

My impression is- YOU REALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT AMERICAN'S INTERESTS. You and your cohort of know-nothing trolls (sockpuppets?) don't give a FUCK about America. What are you - RUSSIAN?

So, ANSWER THE QUESTION, GSTRING. Put some thought and some heart into thinking about the future of YOUR "FELLOW AMERICANS" (if indeed you really are American).
