As his boat came around a corner last August, Paul Nicklen spotted what at first looked like a white blanket draped over a rock. And although he kept his distance, it soon became clear the blanket was not actually a blanket at all; it was a polar bear — one Mr. Nicklen thought was surely dead.

The polar bear, though, was not dead — at least not yet. And when it managed to stand up, Mr. Nicklen, a visual storyteller, snapped a photo. When he published it on Instagram, the image garnered such a strong response that he knew he needed to return with other members of his conservation organization and the proper filming equipment. Mr. Nicklen, 49, wanted to show people what a starving polar bear really looked like — he wanted to make a scientific data point something real.

So he and a small group came back to the spot in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago about two days later. Then they watched: as the polar bear rummaged through a rusted trash can, as it nibbled at an old snowmobile seat, as its eyes turned downcast, its spirit defeated.

“It rips your heart out of your chest,” Mr. Nicklen said in a telephone interview on Sunday. “As soon as he did a slow stand on his feet, everybody on the team just started crying.”

Last week, Mr. Nicklen, his group SeaLegacy and National Geographic published photos and videos from the encounter. They showed the world the polar bear, stranded on iceless land, its white coat dirtied, its body emaciated, its movements labored.

And when the world saw, millions recoiled in heartbroken horror.

Experts and environmentalists say the broad answer — however controversial and nuanced it may be — is to reduce the present levels of global greenhouse gas emissions in order to curb global warming. In January, federal wildlife officials issued a report that called climate change the biggest threat to the survival of the polar bear.

Hungry polar bear is sad. Melodramatic article fails to explain why or how bear was where it was. Fails to say what time of year, knows nothing about the polar bears health. It may have an illness. They get old and ill, too. Polar bears' weights also vary depending on time of year as well.

When you google polar bear images, how many fat fluffy polar bears do you see?

Like I said, hungry polar bear is sad. But to prop it up as climate change is disingenuous.

I'm not even denying there is climate change or that some of it is manmade... But using pictures of animals solely to manipulate??? PUHLEASSE.

I don't know anything about polar bears, except they live in the Arctic circle.
Maybe they live in the Antarctic as well.

As for Black, Brown, & Grizzly bears, I was told this:
They eat what they need in the summer. In the fall, they're much hungrier;
they eat a lot more to put on weight for winter hibernation.

I see that polar bear's plight as very instructive. I think their numbers have
been much reduced by global warming.

It will get us humans, too, I suppose, as long as we keep contributing to it.
Being clever & inventive, we can compensate a lot. But can we do it indefinitely?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

WISHY, people don't often respond to what they KNOW, they respond to what they FEEL. That's why we can "know", for example, that Saudi Arabia is responsible for the famine on Yemen, but that knowledge just doesn't "grab" us as much as a picture of dying child being watched over by a vulture.

It's unfortunate that this particular emotional tendency is so promoted by our advertising industry and by pro-corporate pro-government propaganda. The DON'T THINK! REACT! impulse is what makes people buy shit they don't need/can't use, avoid thinking about hard things that make them feel uncomfortable, hysterically attack a non-threat, and bury themselves in the bosom of their in-group.

As you know from your own hard personal experience, life isn't an endless series of fun and games, and people conditioned to expect that that is their due ... without recognition that life ALSO includes prolonged periods of pain, worry, doubt, and even outright fear ... leads to people to resent their own lives.

Anyway, I know that KIKI is fully aware of all of the science behind global climate shift. She didn't post this picture INSTEAD OF the science, but IN ADDITION TO.

You can find some more information in the article - which is why I provided the link. Maybe you should have checked it out before you replied out of ignorance.

Polar bears are interesting - they don't hibernate. They shuffle along at reduced energy levels, waiting for the ice to come to shore. It's that ice that allows them to hunt seals in winter, which is their major food source. The lack of ice means an inability to hunt, which means starvation. And many, many polar bears have been starving. That's a well known fact. Sometimes, polar bears can't wait any longer for the ice. This year has been a recession of artic ice, which happens... there has actually been several worse years for it. Those years ALWAYS affect polar bears. This planet has the capacity for unimaginable harshness and it's ridiculous to think of ice as being a permanent thing anyway. It will melt one day, no matter what. And when that happens no one will worry much about polar bears.
