On the matter of game companies ...
I don't have anything good to play at home alone.
... except my olde Sherlock puzzle.
I want to stay clear of the MMO (massively multiplayer online) part.
I prefer RPGs (role playing games), & want to download 1 or 2 published
before 2010. i.e., Pretty much obsolete.

I found what looks like a great download site for over 100 olde games.
But whenever I click the DownLoad button, my security software freaks out.

Where can I safely download olde games?

That's kind of a loaded question. :)

If you "truly" want to be safe, you'll have to pay... no way around it. If you don't mind doing that, there is a site called gog.com that has re-published a TON of old computer games. If you have an account there, I hear that they even offer some old titles for free now and then to members (I don't believe you need a paid membership for them either).

I know plenty of ways to get them otherwise, but probably none that wouldn't set your alerts off. There are a lot of false positives when it comes to your antivirus software, but I wouldn't want to tell you to just ignore them because I don't know what sites you're using.

Actually, now that I think about it, you might want to try Archive.org. They actually have very large collections of old games on there.

If you don't mind torrenting, send me a PM and I'll give you the address of a great tracker that wouldn't have any viruses. They don't have anything that isn't at least 10 years old though.

Another one I kinda recommend, that is both awesome, and horrible at the same time (bring some kleenex) is This War of Mine.

It is loosely based on the siege of Kosovo, which a friend of mine was directly invested in due to being in the peacekeeping force, and I was shipping him extra assistance in food and medical supplies.

While gut-wrenching to play, it will bring you a better understanding of the end results of nation building and regime change, and what that means for the ordinary folks under the hammer when we do that.

There's only two problems with that site for old games, IMO. They don't always configure them correctly, at least right away (there is a fan community there that is really loud about such things and eventually they fix it). Also, if there were copy protection, rarely is it disabled. You are usually still forced to look up key words in the manuals, which they give you in a PDF format. Aside from a very few games that I couldn't figure out how to crack, I have most of the old school classics cracked now.

gog.com pretty much would be the way for you to do it though, because of compatibility issues. None of those old games will work on new operating systems without using a program called DosBox. It's not impossible to figure out, especially if you remember any DOS stuff from back in the day, but for most people it's just way easier to use something from GOG. They've done a pretty fine job integrating the games into DosBox for you so all you have to do is double click a link and it should run.

I hope some of the original writers and programmers are seeing a slice of that pie, but I think it's probably just a cash-grab by whoever owns the rights to these titles all these years later, sadly. :(

Tonight is cloudy, so I'm an indoor sniper kitty, which gives me a sad. I was looking forward to tonight's Geminid meteor peak.

But last night was crisp, cold, and clear, which made for great viewing.

I have been chasing after the Horsehead Nebula for a bit, and I finally caught it last night.

The Horsehead Nebula lies in the Sword of Orion (the three vertical stars in a line that form the "sword" beneath the belt of Orion the Hunter).

That middle blurry pair is where the nebula resides; you can see it near the bottom of this image (you can also see where it gets its name - it looks like a horse's head in profile):

I only got off one shot at maximum zoom, but a shaky tripod and the Earth's rotation conspired to blur the photo.

Believe it or not, the hardest part of these kinds of shots is figuring out where the subject is going to be when the shutter opens. At these kind of zoom levels (4000mm), you can actually watch the stars and the Moon move, and it's motion enough to present framing problems if you have a two-second delay on your shutter to allow for the tripod to stabilize after you push the shutter release. An infrared remote is in the offing. :)

That said, it is both daunting and peaceful to zoom in on the full moon and watch it move across the screen.

I was chasing Jupiter during the summer months, and Saturn, but I have since refined my settings, and look forward to much better shots of those gas giants when they come back into view. In the meantime, I have the nebula to work with, and I am now chasing Andromeda. I am fairly confident that I will be able to get pix of it that will allow the viewer to see that it's a spiral galaxy.

DOS-Box, you say?

My 1st computer was an Apple/// (3), 1980. Thankfully, it was free.
My baby brother worked for Apple for several years & they gave him a new computer
every year. So the 2nd year, when he got a new Apple II, he gave his old one to sis
Lyn; she was quite computer literate as much of her work had been in computer
programming on Mainframes. She had a gift for it. ... the next year, bro was given
an Apple ///, which was taking gas in the market place. It was meant to be a small
business computer; thus it was the forerunner of the Mac. Sis didn't want it & told
him to give it to me. I often fed it an instruction to emulate the Apple II, tho it could
only do 8 kilobytes of that. But it was enough for the Apple II games at that time.
My bro never switched; he's still using Mac's as does my baby sister.
I switched. I don't recall why. It took a while, but I finally got an IBM.
In those days, they were progressing so fast, most of us got a new
computer every 2-3 years.

Not old games -- but Olde games. SSI's 1993 Stronghold.
Minimum system requirements: 2 MB RAM, VGA graphics, MS-Dos 5 or 6,
Microsoft compatible mouse, color monitor, hard drive.

I've still got a Stronghold game going on this computer. There's a desktop
icon of 2 gears: Dos-Box? When I click it, it takes me back down into DOS &
opens my olde game. To make the icon go all the way into the game, I had to
relearn a bit of DOS ... which I then forget instantly.

Yeah... Not sure what the icon with the two gears are. It's probably some other DOS emulator. I'm sure there is more than one. It could also be a front-end for DOSBox, which makes it a lot easier to use. I personally use the d-Fend Reloaded front-end with it. Whatever it's doing, it has to be emulating DOS though since DOS hasn't been a part of Windows since '98. (You could do some DOS-like commands in Windows from then on in the CMD prompt, but it was no longer an actual DOS.

I actually wrote some batch programs that will automatically carry over old save games and characters from the old SSI Gold Box games after you beat them (like the Savage Frontier and Pools of Radiance games).

You can emulate the Apple III with MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), although I've never done it before. I have used an emulator called Kegs to emulate an Apple IIgs on the XBox to some limited success, but I've never really messed much with it since the only Apple I ever used as a kid was the Apple IIe and only a few times.

MAME is pretty awesome, I run it for arcade machine emulation, and some of those ROMs I actually scored myself by tracking down machines in the junkyard.
I have over 667 ROMs for the damn thing, all the classics and some real rarities as well.
If you need a particular ROM, just give a shout, and its likely I have it around.

Yeah, of all the things I thought I'd have to deal with in taking night sky pictures, the planet's rotation was definitely not high on the list. I'll be looking into an equatorial mount soon to deal with the motion and track the stars in their nightly procession across the sky.

I'll leave the serious observatory 'scope time to the professionals (or at least the grad students); I'm having too much fun with what I've got, although I confess I have been shopping a nice 8" or larger telescope. I want pictures of Jupiter and its red spot; I want pictures of the ice caps on Mars. :)

Hah! Reciprocal saws are one of the best inventions ever made. I didn't know how to edge my curbs even if I could get extension cords out that far, but my old man told me that he had just visited my brother in Baltimore and he used a cordless Ryobi to get the job done. Works a charm.

I've never acutally dumped any roms myself, but over the years I've done extensive testing of them on the XBox and now on the Raspberry Pi as well.

The XBox is GREAT at emulating almost every arcade up to the year 2000. Between MAME and FBL, it plays over 2,000 arcade games (no clones). If you're ever interested in learning how to mod one (assuming you haven't already), let me know.

Eventually I want to build an arcade machine from scratch and put one in there, although I'm thinking that with the power of the Raspberry Pi 3 and its built-in wireless capabilities, I'm probably going to use that instead, although it takes a ton more setup than the XBox did on the software end. Plus, I'll eventually have to re-build an entire MAME set and re-test it since they use different MAME versions.

Yeah, the Pi is definately the way to go with that - building the casing ain't so hard neither, the tricky part will be the control setup, I would reccommend finding an old SNES Advantage and stripping that for the necessary parts, as it has enough buttons for the purpose.

Yeah. We had video previews as well as a lot of other things for a ton of games spanning over a dozen consoles and handhelds on the XBox, but getting that all to work on the Pi is no easy feat. I'm working with a "Linux guy" on a script that should automate that for me, but it's been months in the making so far.

It's really cool what they've done, but it's just a shame that we can't "port" the XBox setup to the Raspberry Pi instead of the Libretro/EmulationStation setup that is used now. (It couldn't be too hard since XBMC was the pre-cursor to Kodi). For consoles and handhelds that pre-date the N64/PSX generation, the emulators that XBox uses are far better for the most part than on the Pi. The Pi wins those and more advanced arcade games by default because of the sheer power thrown at them though.

I think I'll have to go with the Pi 3 or whatever new version comes out just because of that.

Zoë Quinn, creator of the game Depression Quest, accused Alec of sexual assault and abuse on Twitter and led to claims all over social media of supposed assault. This led to condemnation and even shortly after without any evidence and just allegations, leading to the creators of Night in the Woods cutting ties with the person.

This pushed Alec over the edge and on August 31, his sister, Eileen Holowka, had announced her brother had taken his own life. She explained that while he was indeed mentally ill, he had been getting treatment and was about to get his life back on track and even claimed he wished the best for Zoë. After the news broke that Holowka had committed suicide, Quinn, along with Scott Benson and Bethany Hockenberry (Alec's former colleagues and coworkers for NITW) had all nuked their Twitter accounts; it is highly likely they did so as a cowardly measure to negate any incoming backlash they could've inevitably received. Games and the technology that have run them have come so far you can pretty much do whatever you want with them now. Having Nazis as cannon fodder in your game with and without swastikas is just a matter of putting a different "skin" over the 3D model coded beneath.

Stuff like this is, after all, a large part of how many Pay to Play games make their money off of micro=transactions. If you want the cool new outfit for your characters that all your friends have, you need to get Mom's credit card and pay $3.99 for it. (It isn't actually worth anything since it's not real clothes, and the amount of money they end up making off of these cosmetic changes are many thousands of times the money that went into creating them).

Options are fine with me. On everything. Even the option to censor or water-down your own experiences.

If some soccer mom Karen or some pink haired weirdo man hating lesbian doesn't want her avatar kicking ass with her tig old bittys bouncing all around and 20 lbs of ass with a thong bikini up the crack, but some 40 year old dude living in mom's basement does, let them all have the option to do whatever they want to do.

You could even transition these filters very easily into online gaming so the person who doesn't want to see swastikas won't see any of them on any of the remote players, but the one who does will see them on all of the remote players who are the Nazis.

Stop censoring shit.

Let people play the game they want to. Not the game YOU want them to play.

honestly I missed Gamergate that's why sometimes I try and catch up with this 'culture', I've been out of the gaming thing for years but I do pop in once in a while to see what is going on.

This whole Gamergate thing seems to have many people in the game community harshly divided...I played video games once but don't anymore, there are a bunch of online peole guys and girls I know, a bunch of engineering arty both single married divorced dude that meet up for 'cards' or gaming or whatever that I can meet up with but I don't, one group booze a lot, one group are stoners. I perhaps see it as a waste of time now, I don't know why I quit gaming it just got too intense, takes over peoples minds with the online thing and addiction element, once it went online and took credit cards I stopped playing. If I ever do play any racing, puzzling, fighting, strategy thing or shooter thing people are often shocked at how good I am at 'gaming' but the thing is once your learn some gaming it hasn't changed much in years, the pads and joysticks they are all the same its just each game and each software has it own unique gameplay or quriks or guns or interaction, once in a while I might play an old game or an emulator with retro or something but personally I avoid the games. If I'm bored and have free time I might paint or play guitar or read a book or watch someone do a game walk-through or speed run of some big hit but I've mostly been out of the Loop for years.

It seems to have little Middle Group, its a forced narrative, an extreme Team A vs another Team B debate, one side says yes she did sleep with people and even a guys dies suiciding with the whole thing

I was probably too young. When Clinton became President, I wasn't even in Jr. High yet. Afterward, I was an edgy teen and everything I liked was constantly trying to be shut down and censored by the Religious Right and the Satanic Panic.

Then, as I reached adulthood in the late 90's, the economy was great and I ended up dropping out of college the first time to work full time without distraction making over $55,000/yr. back when gas prices were under a buck more often than not.

Not being politically minded at all, I was probably pretty pro Democrat back in those early days. How much of that was media manipulation is impossible to say, although I'd say that it's much less than any kids going through school today are getting.

Of course, I didn't realize they how's and why's of the economy doing so good then and how it was unsustainable and built off of the strengthening of China that it has wrought today.

Politics didn't interest me in the slightest until I was in my mid-to-late 20's. I didn't even get registered to vote until 2004 to vote Not-Bush.

Now, in my 40's, I don't even think voting for President really matters. It's all of the offices below the President that really matter, stolen elections aside.

I'm one of less than 1,000 people who voted in an off-year local election that got the right people in to get the ball rolling on reducing our property taxes, and one of less than 200 people who voted in the referendum a few years later that resulted in a decrease over 2 years of about $300 per year on what were already far more reasonable property taxes than you'd find 30 miles west in Illinois.

That's the only two elections I ever voted in that I feel made any impact on my life. Both of them were off-year elections that almost nobody voted for. It's funny when you walk into the polling place during those times and you are immediately checked into the booth because there are more people working at the polling place than there are people voting.

Both parties are cancer. Democrats now are a Stage 4 brain tumor that needs to be removed.

And once the pendulum starts swinging back the other way, I don't suppose it will be too long before I'm saying the same thing about Republicans again.

There is an EXTREMELY high rate of autistic people in the gaming scene. Particularly in the speedrunning community, and among games where "farming" is required. Farming is a game mechanic where somebody needs to perform a task over and over and over again for sometimes hours, days, weeks or even months in order to obtain Superior Loot or unlock achievements.

There also seems to be an EXTREMELY high concentration of transgenders in both of these segments of the gaming community as well.

I wonder if the two are somehow linked?

In some cases, the transgenders are put front-in-center during GDQ (Games Done Quick) fundraisers that didn't earn their spot there. When they're not very good, they're allowed to show up to speedrun crappy games that nobody bothers speedrunning, as to not set off a lot of legitimate gripes, but at the same time the same ones show up for every event because they're favored because of their status.

But in other cases these transgendered people are actually very good at the games and do deserve a spot there.
