Jar-Jar Abram's story of how Mary Sue lost to the Space Nazis.

I had no idea there were so many reasons not to watch the new Star Wars movies. I had to look a little deeper into it when even Wishy was complaining a bit about about it and started a post with "And I am ALLLL for empowerment. But...STAR WARS."

Absolutely disgusting. (Not Wishy's quote, which I actually appreciate more now, but what Disney is doing)

Anybody who has no interest in the new films should give this a view. It's rather comical and I feel it gives a great recap of everything you "need to know" about the new Star Wars universe. (And I do mean new... they're killing everything we knew off intentionally).

Can you think of other recent films with the same transition?.

Ghostbusters 2016 comes to mind, only because of the ridiculous hype a mediocre movie ended up getting because of the controversy. I actually did finally watch that one out of curiosity. It wasn't a good movie, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some said it was. It was just an average flick that aped the Ghostbusters name. I don't think the movie itself did what Star Wars is doing, just because it had 4 female characters. It was the hype around it that was bad.

I can't say much more than that, although I'm pretty sure it's happening all over. I generally stay far away from reboots just because they're terrible 99% or more of the time, so I can't give any other examples.

Gwendoline Christie plays the evil Captain Phasma, who wears gold stormtrooper armor. Obviously the gold is a fashion statement.

Seriously 6ix...really, I think you have other things to worry about than women and empowerment and heroes and villains, don't you?

I mean...poor little white guys...SAID NO ONE, EVER.

ALL the characters were written badly in TLJ...women, men, even the porgs...
But you wanna use it for your agenda that only white men can be seen as heroes... whatev.

no one cares...

It just makes you look... sad.

You'd think...

Captain Phasma was in The Force Awakens, not TLJ. You'd barely know she was a she since she's in costume the whole time. I don't think that was actually something the writers were very proud of.

The Space Nazi's represent the Patriarchy. La Resistance symbolizes the Matriarchy and SJW diversity crowd.

Wishy wasn't a fan of the new direction that Star Wars was taking herself, until I had an opinion on it. Seems like she likes it now.

Not exactly.
Isn't that like saying the Bible is just a freaking book?

Books, movies, TV shows influence our society. Hopefully reality influences
us more ... I think that depends on where we put our attention.

IF the USA is the most gun crazy culture in the world, could it have
anything to do with our leisure time viewing? Westerns & War movies?
As a kid, I liked westerns best ... because I love horses more than guns.
As an adult, I was fascinated by martial arts movies for a while. Because
it looked like they were doing the impossible.
Probably movies that evoke strong emotions influence us the most.

Thanks OONJ. I was actually thinking along the same lines, but I didn't come up with as good of an analogy as your Bible one.

I also didn't really want to respond because I'm not very emotionally invested in it either. Star Wars did mean a lot to me when I was a kid, but as I've said in the Other Sci Fi Series thread here several times, I'm not at all interested in seeing the new movies and I never actually saw the entire prequel trilogy even because it was so bad.

But, thanks for your Bible reference. Star Wars isn't "just a movie" and I'm not really a fan of great stories being co-opted for political agendas.

Even Wishy was complaining about the new Star Wars in the other forum, but when I have an opinion on it she has to take the extreme and opposite side regardless.

Since you can't pay attention, here's what my first post said about the movie..

"Sorry, I didn't get it. It wasn't bad. It WAS flippant and at times visually interesting, but I didn't feel like it had a point -for the universe or for the fandom. "

Basically, it was enough to keep my attention, and it was good surprising in some ways and bad surprising in some ways. Neither really had anything to do with gender as THEY WERE ALL MADE UP CHARACTERS.

Like G says... It IS just a movie. I was never under the delusion that the "Force" actually exists, although I like the concept.

Some people LOVED the movie...some people hated it. I don't think you get to have an opinion because you haven't even seen it, and you are such a pussy you are afraid some woman somewhere might feel empowered and not worship a penis. *gasp. You are a special kind of pathetic.

Here's who Jesus most likely was...A guy who got pissed off that moneychangers were overrunning his church and did something about it.

Oh, and 6ix, it says he worshipped a god who was both genders...Turns out Jesus was pretty ok with the LGBTQ community.

Christianity is the only religion that was offered to me growing up.
So I am not familiar with the others. ... It's real easy to be offended by someone
else's religion if they're tryin' to convert me.
Alternatives to religion: atheism, agnosticism, calm indifference.

Buddhism, on the other hand. I've been told that this is a philosophy, not a religion.
Maybe it's a good way to nurture oneself.

Siddhartha is a novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with the spiritual journey of
self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha during the time of the Gautama Buddha.

Not really. One is made expressly for entertainment and uses an obvious fictional world for the story telling. The other one - we are told - is real and in it we will find the stories that shape how we behave in the world and what practices should become our core beliefs. So kinda on the opposite ends of the story telling spectrum.

Are you kidding me? It was obviously a metaphor.

"Dude Where's My Car" was just a movie. Star Wars has been a pretty large part of pop culture for 4 freakin' decades now.

Disney buys it, completely destroys all cannon outside of the 6 movies, then co-opts it for a political agenda. Fuck Star Wars. Fuck Disney.

You are mistaken. Captain Phasma was in The Last Jedi and the writer can be very proud of making her completely evil with only a few well-chosen words: “Execution by blaster is too good for them. Let’s make this hurt.” Rose and Finn are to be cut into bloody chunks! “On my command.” Is this the end of Rose and Finn? The Force tells me that there will be an interruption to the execution, but you'll have to see the movie to find out what it is. It's both tremendous and stupendous!

In your mind the words Social Justice Warrior (SJW) equal "despotic Tyrannical"? Originally the difference was between social justice warriors as a kind of keyboard activist in contrast to a social justice worker. Then SJW became a pejorative used by nigger haters who think white people are better than niggers. They couldn't say "nigger lover" because of, you know, unfair accusations of racism, so instead they started using SJW. That makes sense.

LOL... no. I've heard the word SJW used very often in the last year and a half or so, and never have I once heard it used as a pejorative for black people. I see Second has no problem throwing around the real racist word like it was nothing though. That's either the good 'ole Texas oil Tycoon in his blood, or he's black himself so it's okay.

That's not to say it isn't used to describe some black people, but much more often than not, the term isn't even applied to black people at all. It's almost exclusively used, at least as I've seen it, for over-privileged white college kids who suffer from a guilt complex and project their radical leftist beliefs onto other people. Like the creators of the new Star Wars movies.

Essentially saying "n*** haters" here is just another way for Second, or the author of that article, to call people who don't agree with them Nazis.

I don't like hearing anybody tell me what they do or don't believe in, period.

To me, thinking about it is a personal thing. It's interesting to contemplate, but until I'm dead I'm not going to know the answer. Anybody who says they do either way is full of shit and pretty damn conceited.

At least with religious people, I get the draw. They're fooling themselves into believing without a doubt but it's because they want to believe that something is better than this, and maybe they try to live just a little bit better out of fear that there are consequences to their actions. I still have no desire to talk to them about it though.

Whenever somebody goes on and on about how they're an atheist I just tune them out. I have no desire to speak to somebody about how they have all the answers. They always seem so smug when they talk about it too, like they're smarter than everybody else or they somehow have access to some big secret that they don't know shit about.

I can relate to that. In my youth, I loved a good argument re: Religious faith
vs. Logical facts. It made me feel smart.

My Mom was always so proud of our ancestor's brother, John Clarke, who founded
the First Baptist church in America, Rhode Island colony. My Dad, OTOH, resented
churches for wanting a tithe.

Somewhere along the line, I came to this: Religion doesn't have much, if anything,
to do with God; it pretends it does. I seriously doubt that God is interested in our
religions.

We've disagreed here or there, but you've never struck me as the smug know-it-all type. I don't see any problem with watching somebody disprove stories in the Bible or any other religious text with science. I watch a chemist on YouTube called Thunderfoot who does that all the time. I find it quite amusing... but only when I'm in the mood for it.

The stories are ridiculous, and I don't believe that they're meant to be taken literally. Maybe they were at one time. A lot of people did, and still do, that's for sure. My grandma just wrote a "back check" to her church for $900 tithe since May when she had her hip surgery. She's on a very tight fixed income. I think it's bullshit and it makes me mad as hell that the church will take that money from her and nobody came to visit her except for the Pastor 1 time. I'm not mad at her... It makes her feel good.

I never knew you identified as an atheist until now. That's a good thing. It means that it's not some huge part of your identity like it is with some people I know who just can't seem to shut up about it. I suspect that I wouldn't really like Thunderfoot in real life if he wasn't on the other side of a computer screen and I couldn't just shut him off whenever I wanted to.

As I said to Oonj, I tried on religion as a child because a lady that looked after me from time to time was religious. So I had to go to church with her. But by the time I was around 8 or 9 years old I didn't see the point.

My father always let my brother and I come to our own conclusions about things and he supported us in whatever our decisions were. He grew up with a fair bit of religiousness because of his parents. Now, you have to remember that I am talking about the late 1900s. So it was a completely different world and mindset. His experience would have been one of the Protestant ones as his father was Scottish and his mother was raised Catholic in a residential school in the US.

You can know everything that we currently know about science and that doesn't amount to knowing anything about the universe or the bigger picture is all I'm saying.

That's what bothers me about atheists. They think they have all the answers they can't possibly have, which generally means they think they're know it alls. In trying so hard to distance themselves from religion and religious types, they've essentially made a religion of their own, sans a god.... or quite possibly with their almost omniscient belief in their own knowledge, they've made themselves the god of their own little world.

I'm agnostic. I'll talk about it if I'm in the mood to talk about it, which is pretty rare.

Well... I suppose so. I don't kid when I say that I give everything these days about 50/50 and that we might be living in some sort of Matrix-type simulation or this is all somebodies dream... or maybe everything is just as boring as it seems and we are completely alone in our single universe without a god.

I know it annoys some people, but I'm not just going to believe what somebody says is true because "science", and they've read a few more books than I have.
