Books, movies, TV shows influence our society. Hopefully reality influences
us more ... I think that depends on where we put our attention.

anything to do with our leisure time viewing? Westerns & War movies?
As a kid, I liked westerns best ... because I love horses more than guns.
  As an adult, I was fascinated by martial arts movies for a while. Because
it looked like they were doing the impossible.
  Probably movies that evoke strong emotions influence us the most.

Not really. One is made expressly for entertainment and uses an obvious fictional world for the story telling. The other one - we are told - is real and in it we will find the stories that shape how we behave in the world and what practices should become our core beliefs. So kinda on the opposite ends of the story telling spectrum.

As I said to Oonj, I tried on religion as a child because a lady that looked after me from time to time was religious. So I had to go to church with her. But by the time I was around 8 or 9 years old I didn't see the point.

My father always let my brother and I come to our own conclusions about things and he supported us in whatever our decisions were. He grew up with a fair bit of religiousness because of his parents. Now, you have to remember that I am talking about the late 1900s. So it was a completely different world and mindset. His experience would have been one of the Protestant ones as his father was Scottish and his mother was raised Catholic in a residential school in the US.
