I just checked every site with a forecast for this winter, and they all agree it will be wet, but with mild temperatures. And the models mostly say that it is a Neutral Nino kind of year, so they think not much activity.

They did say the deep south would be warm and dry this year, though. Well, half right.

Also, interestingly enough, there was a massive blizzard in 1717, and 1816 was the year it never got warm that summer. 1913 and 1922 also saw massive totals of 47 and 36 in storms. Late teens years are notorious for turbulence.

Big Snow may not be this year (although my arthritis is already in suck mode), but I have a feeling it's coming soon.

Therefore, I am going to use this thread to see if any of us are any good at prognosticating...

I am guessing that there will be a major snow storm in 2020 with at least 30 in of snow somewhere in the US.

So, pick a year and pick a snow total between 20-80 inches.

Feel free to go as far into the future as your zen allows

If we are still here to find out....

I think 30 inches happens pretty much every year in the Upper Peninsula. And Alaska.
IIRC UP record is about 400 inches total for winter.

We did just have a few in the last 6 or 7 years that were at least 24" around Chicago. When I lived in Wisconsin south of Milwaukee there was even more snow than the usual Chicago winter. Big snows aren't a big deal where we live. Gimme all the snow you want.

I rather enjoyed last winter. It was relatively warm compared to the deep freezes and times where it would be below zero for a week at a time, and quite a few nights were nearly 20 below without factoring wind chill. I love hearing we're going to have a mild temp winter. :)

I am a bit dismayed at the lack of information available on the interwebs for you beach people to learn about snowfall. 2 likely reasons for this lack. For us, snow is just weather, No Big Deal. And when snow cones, our hands don't fill with tweeter rants, but shovels to get 'er done.

You list 2 events since 1997, and claim snowfall is uncommon. A severely incomplete list has 13 events in those 19 years. You list another 5 since 1968, instead of 16. The local weather in your neighborhood does not represent the whole of the U.S.

Interesting that while the interwebs were growing around 1990-2005 there is more information, and then the novelty seems to have faded.

And most of the winters lately are too cold for snow.

About whether or when you'll get a big snowfall where you live?

Sure, why not?

Big snowfall for you mid-December. You'll have a white Xmas.

That, and $3.25 will get you a cup of coffee!

EEEEERNT. Sorry, you lose this round. It rarely EVER snows in December here, let alone accumulates.
We tend to get our worst snows in February or March.

Also, hubby and I can't drink coffee. Green Tea, please.

Okay, let's make this easier...

Well, let me know about your Xmas weather! It'll be fun either way to find out.

Hmmm.... big snow for the year? I'm betting 20". That's not in "one day" but in one "snowfall" which could be over three days.

BTW- Alaska IS in the "continental" USA. It isn't in the "contiguous" USA ... in other words, its OCONUS. So are we including Alaska, or not?

Records were shattered in Erie, Pennsylvania, when 34 inches of snow fell on Christmas Day, making it Erie's snowiest day on record.

As of this afternoon, Erie has had a total of 54.5 inches of snow since midnight Christmas Day -- the greatest two-day snowfall on record for Erie.

Thought it was supposed to be a NEUTRAL NINO YEAR?

It's a high of 10 here today... got cold early this year.

Yuck. It went from comfortable last week to frigid this week, and into the foreseeable future on weather.com. 3 degrees by me last night.

They're saying that most of the upper states will have a colder and wetter than average next 3 months, and most of the middle and southern states will have an average and warmer/dryer than normal season.

Of course, the Chicagoland area needs to be one of the two places on the map that have a big ole dark spot indicating the highest chance for greater than average precipitation. Great time for my car to start leaking 1 quart of oil every 60 or so miles. I might have to break down and get a car loan for the first time in 17 years so I don't end up losing my job... or end up getting stranded on the express way when it's -5 degrees out without a cell phone.

Good news, Wishy. Assuming you live at least 100-150 miles south of Chicago, you shouldn't have too bad a winter. I don't remember how far south you are.

Heard a guy on radio talking about how these storms weren't so uncommon in the late 50's to the early 70's. Back when #scientists knew we were headed for a new ice age.

heh... yeah. I remember Milwaukee winters. Geographically speaking, where I am now wouldn't look much different on a map to somebody who's never lived there, but it's been my experience that the further NorthWest along Lake Michigan you get the more that lake effect snow can pummel you.

That's not to say I haven't been hit hard since I've lived where I am now, but I don't miss literally being snowed in someplace.

Folks are talking about how historic this is, but only talking about 30" or similar.
A few days ago the weatherguessers said that it was April snow, so it would melt right away and not accumulate. So I let my guard down.

Wrong. Everything is closed, libraries, churches, colleges. My city Street, across the road from the High School, has not been plowed since the snow started, except a one-lane path. The plow trucks had already been mostly converted to spring/summer use.

And yes, a few blocks away Lambeau Field is closed.

Last week was only 12 inches.

Tried to leave my driveway today, but it was full of 3 feet of snow, more than any other day this year.
Local weather says today is a record, 23" and counting.

And the heavy snow is expected to be tomorrow.

Plus the Mall is closed.

And everything is closed on Monday, and Snow Emergency plus closings declared for Tuesday.

And some businesses have had their roofs collapsed. Now THAT is something unexpected for April. That does not happen often in Wisconsin.

Our news showed that the roof collapses were a hotel (occupied), barn - trapping livestock, and carports (smashed 7 cars).

Showed a local school buried, only the upper Windows above the entrance plus the roof were visible.

Ranked 2nd heaviest snow storm on record for Green Bay, after the 1 March 1888 storm.

So anyway, what is the total snowfall events that this thread was started for? A couple hundred?

Quite the rare event, yep.
