Because JSF was such an ass, and because second made a great point about all the empty positions at the State Department, I wanted to revive this thread. It was your post that enlightened me to the firing.

My hope is that Pompeo will start rebuilding the agency. We'll see if that is his intention soon enough.

I don't know much about Pompeo other than hearing him speak at his confirmation hearing. Seemed pretty capable in that context, but who knows. I am seeing some other reports that are less flattering, more extreme behavior:

I also see some reports that the WH is expecting to move some more dead weight out of the WH/cabinet - Trump even publicly announced he "almost has the cabinet he wants." So expect more firing.

And then there's the recent House Intel investigation closure. Not so much that it was a scam (duh!) just it's rather sudden closing, as if it's timed to synch with other events and not just "we're done here." I'm not going to be surprised if Trump feels emboldened (and even is getting off) and makes even larger moves, like Mueller, who I honestly can't believe still has a job.

Pompeo is wicked smart but is very political in what he says. He is way smarter than Trump.

I wonder if Mueller will look to see if anyone from the White House communicated with any of the House republicans, to see if the White House pressured them into shutting down their investigation. Remember, they will be under oath if he does. And we know it happened.

What's the attitude about this poisoning (if you care to guess) in England right now, KPO, and what's the overall feeling toward May? Is she 'damaged goods" because of Brexit?

The public mood is pretty angry about the Skripal poisoning because:

1. The Russians have done this before in '06 with Litvenenko. Two confirmed poisonings begins to look like state policy...
2. The indiscriminate nature of the poisoning, affecting Skripal's daughter and a British policeman, and generally putting the general public at risk

Add to this that Skripal was a British citizen and you've got an international incident that won't blow over quickly.

As for May, yes her response on this has been good - about the only thing she's been good on. Her whole schtick is to pass herself off as "strong and stable", but this facade fell to pieces during the election last year where she wussed out of the TV debate with other party leaders and generally campaigned terribly and then lost her parliamentary majority (in an election that she called). And then she gave this 'car crash' convention speech a few months later -

As for Brexit, the country is still split near down the middle, but everyone is pretty much agreed that the government is botching the negotiations. The debate still rages over hard Brexit or Soft brexit; but the government is still holding out for a have-your-cake-and-eat-it fantasy Brexit. Plus they have no coherent plan for the Ireland/N.Ireland border. Meanwhile the government's own impact assessments show that the hard Brexit they want is going to be economically terrible, especially for poorer, working-class areas (the people Siggy claimed she cared about when she cheered Brexit on 2 years ago).
