Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said Sunday that students who have rallied for gun control should instead learn CPR or find their own way to prevent a school shooting.

"How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that," the Republican said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The 2012 and 2016 presidential candidate said students could work to stop bullying in their communities or respond themselves to a shooter instead of asking lawmakers to approve legislation to protect them.

Santorum's comments prompted outrage on social media a day after hundreds of thousands of teenagers and their supporters rallied across the U.S. to push for tougher laws to fight gun violence.

Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., posted on Twitter, “Dear Rick Santorum: CPR is good for heart stoppage. Not good for victims of multiple AR-15 bullets, which typically impart 3 times the lethal energy upon impact than a 9mm handgun bullet. AR-15 bullets obliterate organs and cause so much bleeding that victims die very quickly.”

The demonstrations Saturday were led by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed last month.

“I think @RickSantorum might need to learn CPR for the NRA following midterms,” David Hogg, an #NeverAgain activist tweeted.

Santorum said that if the rallies are about more than politics, then the country needs to have a broader discussion that doesn't revolve around "phony gun laws" that don't work.

"They took action to ask someone to pass a law," he said of the demonstrators. "They didn't take action to say, `How do I, as an individual, deal with this problem?'"

What Republican thinks that it's good for them having this guy speak in public?

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

You rush the dude, like troops landing at Normandy. Sure you may have mass casualty rates exceeding anything in WWII, but sooner or later the bodies will pile up and make great cover.

Just pointing out that the notion of 'individual action' by the students is one that Santorum obviously failed to think through.

So anyway ... anyone up for a rational, fact-based, and civil discussion about the topic?

Ridiculous and stupid thread title.

Rick Santorum's brain is a myth.

Seriously, I've NEVER been impressed w/this guy. Heard him fill in on talk radio shows, and it was clear then he was paying lip service to actual conservatives, and that he didn't really have a grasp on what he was saying. The guy is about as deep as a puddle on a tile floor.

There was a brief moment when I did feel sorry for him, but hell, he's earned his mockery. What a maroon.

Didn't know Santorum had a brain. He should pay a visit to the Scarecrow, he could lend him some of his.

You have to wonder how it happens - that he gets any air time unless it's to make Republicans look bad. Someone needs to tell him.

The story of his wife delivering a child who was stillborn was tragic, but he managed to screw that up as well. As a means of coping, the two decided to take the lifeless body of their child HOME to ' meet the siblings '. Little Gabriel lived about 2 hours, before passing away at the hospital. I don't know how old the other children were at the time, but it's not like they were there at the hospital, and had a moment w/ the family, alone, to pray. Nope, they chose to take the ... remains " home ".

I get it. Death can be weird. Religious folks " have their own way ", and losing a family member... just horrible. Shouldn't criticize, right ? Everyone has the freedom to honor life and death as they deem necessary. But adding to all else, this just seems such a Santorum thing to do.

That's the thing now. It's not really about the kids, it's for the mom to process. It's why you see animals carry around dead babies, whales keeping dead calves afloat. People can even rent refrigerated caskets for weeks now.

Not what I would be doing, but we aren't that far removed from animals on our best days.

Usually, if the baby lives even for a few hours, you can donate its organs. I would think that would be a better thing to do.
