Hey... as long as you don't destroy yourself while you're not married, it sure is a good way to live.

Grass is always greener though.

I tell my married friends that even though I wouldn't trade the freedom of being single for anything, they should appreciate their wives for keeping them more or less in line. All of my married friends seem to have skipped the whole self-destruction phase in their life, and not too many of the unmarried ones ever came back from that. My own story is littered all over these boards, and it wasn't pretty.

It's actually somewhat difficult to maintain focus and ambition and not succumb to idle-hands syndrome and all that entails when you don't have somebody constantly nagging at you and you find yourself living a life absent of the responsibility that most other people your age have.

Can't speak for what it was like to be married 50 or more years ago, but from the outside looking in it seems these days that most guys getting married just need to keep a mom figure in their life. I mean, that's essentially what a wife is after the honeymoon phase is over.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I agree with you on something for once!

Now, you wanna discuss the reasons why a lotta men would need a "mommy" and why women would generally be more responsible??

I'm guessing not....

Women in general have a better sense of self preservation than men. It's in the genetic code.

Until recently, making sure their man stayed healthy and strong was in a woman's best interest. They've got other options now though, via alimony, child support and government programs.

The US Government is Daddy to a lot of kids these days.

I agree with SIX. Evolutionarily, female reproduction is the rate-limiting step for many animals (mammals in particular). Most males in many species are redundant, unless they also feed the young (like many birds). It's beneficial for the species if superfluous males risk and die ... fewer mouths to feed, more food for the young! That's what "intraspecies competition" is all about. But if females were equally risk-taking it would be species suicide.

There are exceptions though. Orcas, dolphins, bonobos that I can think of off the top of my head.

Is the exception to redundant males being gotten rid of (somehow) or to females being more risk averse than males, or both?

I know that orca pods are headed by females. Also elephant herds. I think bonobos as well. OTOH I don't know the dophin hierarchy. (btw Dolphins perform what looks like gang-rape when mating.)

Yup. In a true end-of-the-world scenario, we'd be a much better chance surviving if there were 5 men and 50 women than if there were 5 women and 50 men.

We all need agency, but it's not a coincidence that in times of high unemployment the suicide rate increases are staggeringly slanted on the male side.

The exception is that redundant males live within the group, even though they do no offspring-minding, and don't seem to bring any extra benefit to the group as a whole.

Those seem to be important exceptions to what might be a trend. I was thinking about that trend, and I wonder if it's particularly noticeable in the ungulates (hoofed animals), whose members are able to stand and walk quite soon after birth.

Not all dolphins mate like that. There's a genetically identical group that lives off western Australia whose mating is individual and courtly. Like the peaceable baboons in Kenya, genetics isn't destiny.

Same with males of the human species.

There are a lot of beta males who are so financially and/or physically and/or mentally unattractive to women that they will go their whole life without ever having sex.

Though I'd venture a guess that suicide rate among them were higher than all males in general if a study were to be done, I doubt it's much higher.

Sex is a basic primal need, but that need can be "taken care of" in other ways.

I'd say it's more about purpose for men. Not everybody is going to be able to get away with being a womanizing Chad. But if they can eek out a moderately fulfilling life and feel like they're accomplishing something and/or being a part of something usually that's enough.

Well, I think humans are different. Some species are "harem species", that is ... one adult male to many females, young males are accepted but will be driven out as they mature. Think lion prides, deer herds, or sea lions. In these species, excess males are driven away from prime feeding and breeding grounds, and in order to be let back in the males must undergo fierce competition.

In THOSE species, since the males with the mightiest weapons (biggest antlers, most blubber, most bight-resistant ruff) are the ones which reproduce, the evolutionary trend seems to be strong sexual dimorphism- the males tend to be significantly bigger (often twice as large as the female) and with specialized fighting equipment- tusks, antlers, neck-blubber, neck-ruff etc. As always, there are exceptions: male feral horses in the west aren't hugely bigger than females. They have thicker necks and heavier musculature but in general they're just way ornerier than females and way more apt to kick, rear, and bite.

Another evolutionary "spin the wheel" reproductive strategy is pair-bonding. Some mate for life ... most of them birds (albatross, bald eagles, barn owls, geese, red-tailed hawks, penguins and many others) but also some mammals (beavers, coyotes, whales, otters, prairie voles, wolves)

If I understand their lives correctly, the males in the "mate for life' category are all heavily involved in feeding or otherwise caring for the young. Beavers build and maintain their dams. In the case of wolves, there is one breeding pair per pack, but the rest of the pack also hunt and - at least indirectly- help feed the young.

Others pair-bond for a season... I know a lot of birds do. I think the reason for that is that the birds that hatch without feathers are SO demanding to raise ... they require so much food because they have to grow so quickly in one season that successfully raising at least two hatchlings to adulthood would be beyond the capacity of a single bird to provide.

(And just for the sake of completeness there are other strategies such as "dump a bunch of egg and sperm into the environment" and "eat the male after you've mated")...

Anyway, I think humans are mostly pair-bonding because human babies are incredibly demanding. Think about it: babies are SO helpless that not only do they have to be carried for a year, but for the first few months you have to control their heads for them because their neck muscles are too weak.

How does a mother carrying a baby gather food effectively?

I think the reason why males are "redundant" is because, like you said, government has turned into "big daddy".

There's food source as well.

Carnivores need much larger territory than herbivores. That's why obligate carnivores like cats are usually solitary (lions and housecats being the only exceptions that I know of) and vigorously maintain territorial boundaries. Males lions btw don't control the females as much as they control territory. They establish territory first, females happen later. And only female housecats will at times cooperate with raising young.

Larger omnivores like bears also need large territories and are usually solitary.

Canids (dog category, not obligate carnivores) are an exception to solitary territoriality with some having a group strategy, but only 1 pair breeds.

Grazers are often nomadic with the seasons, have 'capable' babies, and don't respond to territory as much as group. It makes most sense for them to exclude males who then fight over the females (the group, not a territory).

Yup. And if ever there were a "social construct" it's the idea that it costs somewhere just south of $250k to raise a child.

That is such a subjective thing. Even in our own country and the times we live in that doesn't apply to everyone. It couldn't possibly. There are plenty of people who couldn't hope to make $250k before that child hit adulthood, and that's just exponentially true the more kids they have.

But for those who can afford it, the kids get spoiled with tons of toys, and new clothes, new school supplies every year when most of the old ones were still good, rental of school books every year by a monopolistic setup that charges 10 times what the book should cost to buy for the rental, insane college costs, being trapped at jobs they hate to keep their kids health insurance, etc., etc., etc..

Big Daddy Government can afford to do a lot more of that than nearly any single man could ever hope to.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

This was an interesting article.

Although, I think it's impossible to try to speak for an entire group of people as if one large choice they made in life dictates that they'll all display similar behavior.

I actually wanted to take some time to address the points from my own perspective, even if nobody cares to read it.

Quote:

Single Men Are Rich in Friendship…

Single men are not necessarily isolated basement-dwellers. They’re actually significantly more likely than married men to have several close friends. One in eight men report having no friends at all (and a lot of these men are married with kids), despite research showing that friendships help people live longer lives, stave off cognitive decline, and increase general well-being. Guy friends are a precious public health commodity that single men have covered.

This checks out. Several of the best fathers and husbands I've known don't really have any close friends anymore. There's simply no time for it after being a husband, father and provider, along with any personal quriks they have and what they choose to do with their very limited free time. I also know several guys who are great fathers and husbands who are also great friends. We don't see each other as much as we did when time was cheap, but having friends and being a good friend is something that is a part of them so they make the time to keep up important relationships.

As for me, personally, I had a long and destructive path of alcoholism behind me that torched a good majority of my relationships. With five years of sobriety behind me I have spent a great deal of time fixing things that are important in my life. Not just my own health, future and living conditions, but also realizing what old relationships were worth getting back into and making them stronger than they ever were before.

I actually have a lot to bring to the table as a jack of all trades, and along with my copious amounts of free time, I'm always there for them if they need me for something. In turn, we develop a reciprocal relationship of doing good deeds for each other.

For a long time there, particularly when I was a drunk, I shuned relationships. My step-dad once told me that "no man is an island". It took me a while to realize that he was right. A good friend is invaluable. Being blessed with two or three of them is a gift. Not only do you get to benefit from their help when you need it, but unlike mindlessly virtue signalling on social media for likes, you get a genuine feeling of being needed and belonging and satisfaction when you can help out somebody you truly care about with something that you just can't get from typing out a few sentences on Twitter or making a 30 second TikTok video.

Quote:

…But Poor in Money

What single men gain in friends, they lose in money, studies show. Men who stay unmarried make anywhere from 10 to 40 percent less than married men. There’s evidence that fathers make up to 21 percent more than men without children, though studies also suggest men with wives and kids work longer hours and put up with more workplace bullshit than single men. Now, this doesn’t mean marriage and parenthood cause financial success (though anecdotally, that sure doesn’t sound right). Indeed, other research argues that men are simply more likely to get married and have kids when their income is already rising. Either way, your unmarried, childless bachelor friends are probably making less money than you are.

This checks out too.

I've known single guys that did have a lot of money, but that's not me. I did set myself up rather nicely and I don't need much money at all. I think had things gone differently and the last company I was working for hadn't been bought out, I probably would have stuck around and had a million bucks for now, just because it was easy to stay there, but after being outsourced and laid off for the 3rd time in my life I decided I'm just done with the rat race.

When you have no wife, kids or even a single contract for a product or service and zero debt, there's really not much you need to get by. If you don't have to pay for your dwelling other than property taxes, it's almost comically cheap to live a fulfilling life even when inflation is killing everyone else.

This part here is very much tied to the first point. Freedom from most responsibility gives me an abundance of free time that most people will never get to taste until possibly when they reach retirement age. It is something I have to work on keeping front and center in my mind when I can't get help reciprocated on my schedule. Sometimes I luck out and can get the assistance I need immediately. Other times I have to move on to a different project that I can do on my own until one of my friends can come and help. It can be frustrating at times, but I need to remember that basically everybody I know has a much more demanding schedule than I ever will.

Quote:

Men Who Aren’t Married Commit More Crimes…

Marriage reduces the likelihood that men will commit crimes, studies suggest. And data indicates that becoming a father quells criminal impulses even further. In societies with a disproportionate number of single men who cannot marry or have children, either as a result of polygamy or uneven sex ratios, we tend to see higher crime rates, higher rates of extremism, and more time at war across the board.

Well... I'm not a criminal. But I'm sure this checks out. It just makes sense. Those with less to lose are far more likely to engage in illegal and/or anti-social behaviors.

Being a non-violent person, and one who doesn't enjoy treading on other people, this is probably why I internalized my destructive tenancies and drank myself to the point I was going to die if it continued.

But that's not to say I don't have anything to lose now. I've got a great setup here. There's plenty to do to keep me busy, and if I burn a few days or weeks here or there doing nothing I have no need to be too hard on myself since time is so cheap.

It's nice being in a position where even with zero or poverty-level income when I do work that things would have to get much, much worse in this country before I ever worried about anything.

So yeah... I can get angry about bullshit going on in the world, but damned if I'm going to do anything about it. I'm certainly not going to throw the first stone.

If trouble ever comes knocking at my door I'll deal with it then. I'm prepared for it. Hopefully trouble never needs to learn that I'm probably more trouble than trouble is.

Quote:

…But Bachelors Are More Sensitive to Feelings of Judgement and Regret

When men cannot have their own biological children due to fertility problems, studies suggest they may experience a period of bereavement and regret. And when they can’t have children because they can’t find partners, they’re more likely to be judged by others and more likely to lash out. The perception of being judged for the inability to marry and have kids has stoked the rise of a dangerous group of extremists who refer to themselves as involuntary celibates, or “incels,” a number of whom have orchestrated mass shootings. Married dads are far less likely to feel disenfranchised, at least in this way.

This checks out.

I can't speak for those with infertility problems, or those who can't get dates as those were never problems I had. But without rehashing stuff I posted before, you're probably familiar with the kid I would have had who would be an adult now.

There was once a lot of regret and self-judgement. But eventually you have to get over yourself because it's the only way you're going to forgive yourself. Once I quit drinking and my vision cleared, I realized that there were a good deal of people that I had in my life that were more toxic than the booze I was ingesting in massive quantities and their opinions of me simply don't matter at all.

I have to argue the point that people refer to themselves as "incels". I mean, maybe in some dark corners of the internet they actually do, but I can't imagine why anybody would embrace a term that is so obviously pejorative and self-deprecating.

I'm not a label guy, but if I were to take one on I'd call myself a vcell. There's nothing involuntary about it. This is a conscience decision.

I dated some pretty great girls back in the day, but I was the one who got bored and broke it off. Sometimes something reminds me of them or the time we spent together and I'd start thinking about what life would have been like had we gotten married and had kids. While brief thoughts of this can be pleasant, it's not a thing that should ever get any real time or imagination spent on it because it's counterproductive "grass is greener" behavior.

If you were to strip away any nostalgic and sweeping romantic feelings away from that "fantasy", I know exactly what would have happened. I'm not made for marriage or for fatherhood. I mean, maybe one day I was, but I certainly am not now. In 99 out of 100 parallel worlds, I would have followed my parents' example and that marriage ends in a bitter divorce with the kids being used as pawns for the next 10 or 20 years.

Some people (both men and women) should not ever get married. This isn't just good advice for themselves, but good advice for the person their with and great advice for whatever kids they would have had and damaged to the point that they'd just repeat the same toxic cycle over and over and over again.

Quote:

Being Single Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Being Lonely

The good news for bachelors is that scientists are starting to suspect they’ve underestimated the upsides of being alone. Despite warnings of a loneliness epidemic, single men without children report deeper connections to friends, parents, and other family members, as well as to their work. Single people have a heightened sense of self-determination and are more likely to continue growing as people, one study found. Bachelors also may demonstrate more emotional self-sufficiency, especially when it comes to dealing with negative emotions.

“The preoccupation with the perils of loneliness can obscure the profound benefits of solitude,” Bella DePaulo, a scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told the American Psychological Association. “It is time for a more accurate portrayal of single people and single life — one that recognizes the real strengths and resilience of people who are single, and what makes their lives so meaningful.”

This one seriously checks out.

5 wasted drunken years aside, I'm more self-determined than I ever was. I'm constantly amazed at the things I've done and the things I learn how to do. All of this stuff was here for me to do all along, and most of it is things I get extreme enjoyment out of doing and great satisfaction after having accomplished them, but I couldn't see that while I was drinking.

I've never been closer to my dad than in the last 3 or so years. Growing up through the divorce, I never really got to know him, and there were a few years there where we didn't have any contact at all. From time to time I think about that song "Cat's in the Cradle" and how sad it is and how fortunate we are that it's not about our life.

I call my grandma nearly every day, and now that my aunt and I are getting along great after we had stopped communicating while living at her house, I see them at least once a month. I just recently purchased some used PCs and laptops and got my aunt on the internet for the first time. She's in heaven. She was just telling me last night how she's re-arranged her entire room to center around her new computer/TV and even bought a nice computer chair and some headphones. It's kind of cute actually that she thought that she only had YouTube from her tethered cell phone when I told her last night that she could buy things online too like I did for her the last time she was here. She's like "you mean I have the entire internet!". Yes. Yes you do.

She was my favorite aunt growing up, and somehow adulthood screwed that all up along the way. It's kind of nice having her call me out of the blue just to bullshit, and I've found myself doing the same from time to time. 10 years ago I never thought I'd even speak with her again.

Overall, I think it's a pretty legit article, but I'd caution against making it sound as good as they do. Although they do point out the incel thing and the mass shooter thing, there's really not much negativity about single life in the article.

I'm not suggesting that maybe there should be, but if I were to add anything to it, it would be to give a warning that living a life without any responsibility can allow you to fall into very bad patterns and to stop doing any of the good ones if you allow it to.

I know that most single men don't have the additional blessing/curse of virtual financial freedom, and while I know that played a large part in the dark situation I once put myself in, I think that especially when men are younger they can get themselves into a lot of trouble going the single route that they just simply wouldn't have time to do if they were to get married and have kids.

I'd also say that you should never close any doors. Leave them open, if only a crack. Once you get yourself into a comfortable situation and took care of all of the pressing needs, leaving you with only basic maintenance and chores in your life, maybe finding the right girl is something that would do you good.

You've waited that long. You've set yourself up pretty nicely. You've otherwise eliminated every conceivable source of stress that you have any control over.

You're a catch.

It is sad that the only people who seem to agree with me on this issue are the most rich and most evil people on the planet.

Because we're not going to like the way they choose to go about doing it (the stick) over my ideas for making it happen (the carrot).

I used to joke that I learned from my Dad and I'd wait until I was 40 and marry a 20 year old and skip the first bad marriage. Now that they're 70 and 50 and the kids are grown up I think I've decided I'm going to skip the troubles that the not-quite-as-bad 2nd marriage brings too.

Bullets dodged.

After graduating from university, I took a year off to try to decide what I should do with my life. Less than a year later, the Covid-19 pandemic began to upend everyday society. Unsurprisingly, nobody wanted to meet in person. Understandably so. Still, human contact is a simple kind of comfort, if not a basic need. Like many others, working from home and not hanging out with friends became extremely lonely. Since I didn’t really have much to do, I decided to try my luck on dating apps.

Doesn't surprise me. I know people who let Hillary and Trump ruin their marriage. Hell... I know a guy who's old man still isn't talking to him because he voted for Trump in 2016.

10 times out of 10, it was the mask wearer of the couple who broke off the wedding during Covid.
