George Herbert Walker Bush, age 94.

41st President of The United States.

The only single-term Republican President in 85 years. Since Herbert Hoover, 1929-1933. The last non-Herbert to serve a full term was Taft, 1909-1913.

He was the longest living President in history, as well as the longest living Vice President in history.

He is also the first, and only, Vice President to ascend to the Oval Office upon the Term Limited end enforced from the 22nd Amendment. Nixon failed in 1960, algore failed in 2000. Truman was grandfathered and lost in 1952, Cheney did not run, Biden did not attain the Nomination.

Word was that he was pulled back from China when Nixon selected him as his new VP in Fall 1973.

But when he got back to D.C., TPTB had required Nixon change his selection to Gerald Ford. The next year Bush became Envoy to Communist China (precursor to Ambassador). Interestingly, Ford was the longest living President, until Bush41 surpassed him.
In August 1974 Bush was one of 3 who Ford considered for his VP, along with Donald Rumsfeld and Nelson Rockefeller.

Pop Quiz:
Who was the last Democrat who JFK defeated (largely acknowledged as fraudulently) at the DNC in 1960?
Who was the last Person who JFK defeated (largely acknowledged as fraudulently, in TX and IL) in the General Election of 1960?
Who was the sole member of The House of Representatives on the Warren Commission Cover-Up, also the leaker to FBI's Hoover?
Who were the 3 Presidents after JFK?

George H.W. Bush was a genuinely excellent president responsible for historic achievements that are often overlooked because of the arbitrary way we value presidential legacies.

His passing, at the age of 94 on Friday, is a perfect time to take stock of his policy accomplishments and take a broader view of his career. Bush’s single term was not so long ago, but he was both the last president of the generation that served in World War II and one of the last politically influential pragmatists in the Republican Party.

From domestic affairs — where he was the last president to sign a truly bipartisan “grand bargain” — to his deft foreign policy, Bush was a president who aimed for competent management rather than ideological transformation. He had a cautious outlook, but in hindsight his presidency was marked by acts of political courage.

He lost his reelection in 1992, yet his defeat had little to do with anything under his control.

Presidential policy is important economically, but presidents have limited influence over the short-term ups and downs of the business cycle. He was done in by a sluggish recovery deliberately engineered by a Federal Reserve that, somewhat outrageously, was pursuing a policy of "opportunistic deflation" that hurt the financial interests of middle-class Americans. Millions of Americans suffered unnecessarily long spans of joblessness and sluggish job growth as a result, and Bush himself became a collateral victim of this policy, which sent him into a spiral of obscurity.

There is more about his pretty good domestic policy and masterful foreign policy at www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/12/1/14313522/george-h-w-bush-die

I'll keep this one at-hand for the next downturn and see if it applies.

I think the thing that sunk Bush41 was Read my lips: No new taxes. That, plus a generally "meh" popularity.

Bush41 was also (they say) a clandestine CIA asset. As founder of Zappata oil (an oil exploration company), Bush41 had the perfect cover to travel all around the world to sensitive locations in search of oil.

Bush compromised on taxes and then he lost reelection, giving succor to every ideologue's fondest dream, that the path to electoral glory lies in rigid adherence to the pure faith. But nobody ever governs as a true ideological purist. Ronald Reagan raised taxes and withdrew American troops from Lebanon. George W. Bush added an expensive new entitlement to Medicare.

What ultimately brought Bush down had nothing to do with a budget deal or the failure to march on Baghdad. It was the economy, stupid — as the Clinton team that beat him well knew. But taxes and war are exciting, and the Federal Reserve is boring. So Bush became an ideological pariah and the GOP has become a dogmatically anti-tax party.

It's not a surprise that George H.W. Bush called Trump a "blowhard" motivated solely by "ego" -- and didn't vote for him in the 2016 general election. Trump's rejection of the Bush way has manifested itself in ways big and small.

Whereas H.W. Bush believed in the idea of America as a beacon of moral leadership in the world, Trump often acts solely from the perspective of his financial interests. Trump's decision to simply throw his hands up and conclude no one could really know if Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince played a central role in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi is the latest example of Trump's amoral approach to world affairs.

Whereas Bush famously spoke of the "thousand points of light" that represented the tremendous spirit of volunteerism and community at work in the United States, Trump, as recently as this summer, has mocked that slogan -- and acknowledged he never even understood it.

"Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one," Trump told a crowd in Montana at a campaign event. "What the hell is that? Has anyone ever figured that one out? And it was put out by a Republican, wasn't it? I know one thing, 'Make America Great Again' we understand. Putting America first we understand."

Which, really, says it all. So far removed is Trump's conception of politics and public service and the broader idea of what we should be as a country from the vision embodied in George H.W. Bush that Trump can't even grasp what his predecessor was talking about.

From a speech Bush gave almost 30 years ago:

"Government should be an opportunity for public service, not private gain. And I want to make sure that public service is valued and respected because I want to encourage America's youth to pursue careers in government. There is nothing more fulfilling than to serve your country and your fellow citizens and do it well. And that's what our system of self-government depends on."

That is due to the rise of Trumpism. More Republicans have left the fold since his introduction into the world of politics, mostly due to his destruction of the norms of both parties - but most especially that of the Republican party.
In addition to challenges to the Constitution.

Face it, this guy goosestepped all over the GOP and has thoroughly smashed it to bits. So we have die-hard Republicans quitting rather than live in a world
where Trump is it's leader. Shaming liberals is the latest technique Trumpism
has incorporated to deflect blame and not accept responsibility for what ails this country today. Granted, the two-party system had it's flaws, but now there are gaping holes where solid ground once proudly stood.

I know that both parties had good and bad members within, but in Trump's case, this is ridiculous. All have flaws, but Trump is downright pyscho. Now which do you prefer Bizarro or Psycho!

Here's what I find uproariously amusing: Trump is bending over backwards to kiss the Bush Family's ass. I could just see him puckering his lips to fit onto Dubya's ass...and the rest of the Bush family.

So I guess that means that Donny baby is a liberal...Bwahahahaha!

Quote:

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump issued a statement mourning the passing of former President George H.W. Bush.
The first couple praised the United States’s 41st commander-in-chief as an “accomplished” and “humble” leader who demonstrated “unwavering commitment” to “faith, family, and country.”

“President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service—to be, in his words, “a thousand points of light” illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world,” President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump’s statement reads.

Boy is Donald desperate, he'll do anything to distract attention away from the Mueller deep dive into his ass...and the hits just keep on coming.

Trump has an approval rating of nearly 45%, which is nearly 8 points higher than GWB averaged in his second term, and well above most of his second term (see link below). A vast majority of those disapprovals are Democrats. There doesn't seem to be any evidence of your claims here.

That will change when Mueller comes out and says he didn't do anything.

Actually, that's a good strategy for Democrats. Keep Mueller quiet and let Maddow talk about Trump every night for the next two years.

RCP shows a much higher rating for Trump currently than Gallop does, based off of an aggregate of polls.

It's hard to compare Trump's current aggregate to 8 years of GWB, so I chose gallop because it was easy. I realize this does pose an apple to oranges problem. Even still, gallop shows an average approval rating for Trump at 39% whereas GWB's average for his second term was 2 points lower at 37%.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Bush was head of the CIA in 1976. During that time, the US/ CIA supported Anwar Sadat, Adi Amin (Paper Cites C.I.A. Aid To Amin's Army in 70's - The New York Times, Our CIA Man in Idi Amin's Uganda - The Washington Post), and aided the coup in Argentina that overthrew a democratically elected leader and installed a military junta (America's Role in Argentina's Dirty War - The New York Times).

He was president from 1989 to 1993. During that time the US supported a number of brutal dictators through the CIA and by other means such as Hissene Habre, Islam Karimov, and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (WaPo - Five human rights abusers backed by the U.S. whom you never heard of). Then there was CIA support of Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war (United States support for Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War - wiki), US support of Suharto despite his extermination campaign that killed hundreds of thousands of Indonesians, aided and abetted by the US (Files reveal details of US support for Indonesian massacre - AP News),

George HW Bush - a great example of what's been wrong with US foreign policy.

Bush41 was also the last person to garner more than 53% of the popular Vote in a Presidential Election. And one of only 3 in the past 54 years (behind Reagan 1984 and Nixon 1972 - both 2nd term Elections), when the Illegal Alien Vote began to change the landscape of National Politics.
