The relationship between support for the president and the wall is so tight that it’s hard not to wonder whether, at least for now, support for the wall is simply a function of support for the president. In other words, attitudes about President Trump might drive attitudes about the wall, rather than the other way around. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise, given how strongly voters feel about the president and the extent that he’s emphasized the issue.

Trump is taking his long history of stiffing contractors to a whole new level
https://qz.com/1522018/

Trump won the presidency without ever addressing the well-documented pattern that he shortchanged hundreds of contractors who worked for his companies.

And now Trump is at it again.

Government contractors are going unpaid, but unlike federal employees, contractors working on an hourly basis have little hope for being reimbursed for lost wages once the government reopens. And many small businesses are left unable to receive payments for work completed as far back as October. Some have begun laying off workers.

The government publishes no official data on contractor and grantee numbers. However, Paul Light, a scholar of federal workers at New York University, tallies around 4.1 million federal contractors or grant recipients (though not all have been hurt by the shutdown). That compares with around 350,000 federal employees forced to stay home.

Contract workers range from storm-tracking radar operators to environmental researchers, though the majority are in the service sector — cafeteria workers, janitors, health aides. Many are employed through small businesses with government contracts. Some firms have yet to be paid for work finished in October.

Unlike stiffing painters and dishwashers in his real estate mogul days, the president’s “hardball tactics” come with risks of much bigger, longer-term consequences. If this episode deters small businesses from bidding for government work in the future, it could hurt government effectiveness (and cost taxpayers more to boot).

Trump had agreed to sign the spending bill, but flip-flopped after conservative media and supporters upbraided him.

Christmas was approaching and a deal between the president and Congress to fund the government seemed imminent. Then the conservative punditocracy threatened to turn on him. Ann Coulter told the Daily Caller that Trump’s tenure will have amounted to a “joke presidency” with “no legacy whatsoever” if he did not get the wall built. Republican representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina warned of the “political fallout” from reaching a deal that included no wall funding, saying it would hurt Trump’s chances for reelection in 2020. Commentator Michelle Malkin characterized a funding deal without wall money as “a cave”, a cave-in.

The president recalls better than anyone that “Build the wall!” chants whipped his base into a frenzy when he was a candidate. Few phrases — short of “lock her up” or “make America great again” — became as inseparable from his political brand. Trump’s well-documented love for the adoration of crowds, including a habit of rewatching his own rallies so he can luxuriate in the moments he believes are evidence of his brilliance suggests the rapturous thrall in which he holds his audiences is mirrored by that in which their adulation holds him.

The most logical reason Trump is using federal money as a hostage is that his base is functionally doing the same to him. Trump did not want this. He wanted to win an election and wanted something catchy and galvanizing “Build the wall!” to say in order to accomplish that goal.

I've been more specific than ANYBODY ANYWHERE on the subject.

6ix, you have been more specific than Trump, and he, a million times more than you, needs to understand the issues in complete detail. But I don't think he has done the necessary work. Possibly other voters are noticing the same about Trump:

Data from the Fox News Voter Analysis of the midterms www.foxnews.com/midterms-2018/voter-analysis indicated that a majority of voters opposed the wall in states worth nearly 400 electoral votes (270 are needed to win) including in several states where the president’s approval rating was above water in the poll, like Ohio and Florida. Even so, the wall still isn’t popular in Michigan or Pennsylvania, important battleground states. And voters in Ohio, a politically similar state, opposed the wall.

I'd imagine that the wall is quite a bit more popular in Michigan and Pennsylvania than your dike is anywhere else in the country, including most of Texas that isn't effected by the water.

That verbal judo won't work for Trump. Trump discarded his leverage from the very start, by declaring for the cameras that the budget shutdown was his decision, his responsibility. When the shutdown began to hurt, Trump and his surrogates hastily tried to transfer the onus — but it was too late. Everybody knew that it was Trump’s doing, and that it was done for reasons rejected by large majorities of Americans.

Trump didn't realize how much stuff that should never be shutdown that he shutdown without thinking first.

It's not rejected by a large majority of Americans.

Buckle in, because the shutdown isn't going anywhere.

Democrats can continue to throw a tantrum about it, or they can craft a bill specifically for EBT payouts and avoid a national disaster.

Not sure I understand why second does not apply the same remedy to Flood of Water as he does to Flood of Illegal Aliens.
He doesn't need a dike like he doesn't need a Wall.
He needs to just get outside during the middle of the hurricane, and merely shovel water uphill. Should work just as well to stop all flooding.
Now that we can visualize his solution, it seems pretty obvious his Dike should be at the bottom of the list of spending priorities.

There are 22 million illegal aliens already living in America. If Trump would brutally scoop them up and dump them out of the country, he would not need more Wall than he already has because new illegal aliens would be frightened of Trump's brutal America. On the other hand, Trump cannot intimidate a hurricane, unlike an illegal alien, to stay out of the country.

(My Republican competitors in the business use illegal aliens. I'm perfectly comfortable with Trump locking up my competitors for hiring illegal aliens at the very same time as they support Trump's Wall.)

The Democratic Party is not for throwing the aliens out. That's the Republican Party's position. It is the GOP that told you they will solve this problem, not the Democrats. It is up to Trump to solve it, but because he is ineffectual, he starts by trying to get the Democrats in Congress to solve his problem for him. Since they won't, because that is not the Democratic Party's position, Trump has to be deliberately sabotaging the GOP's efforts to stop illegal aliens. Trump could be doing something that does not require the Democrats' permission; he could be rounding up the 22 million illegal aliens. Instead, he is wasting time trying to get the Democrats to give a $5.7 billion gift to the Trump reelection campaign.

(I've got an idea for Trump that will work at least as well as a government shutdown: he should take hostages and threaten to kill them unless the Democrats give Trump $5.7 billion. Trump will show those Democrats that he will do whatever it takes to fund a Wall.)

It's nice that Trump has found a subject to not continue the practice of kicking the can down the road. Long overdue.
Hopefully he'll adopt the same attitude about Debt, Deficit, wasteful spending, Debt Ceiling Limits, Balanced Budget.

Since the newly minted Democraps are still getting paid while their voters are not, they decided merely running away and calling "Recess" wasn't enough. They're throwing an all-out blowout Party in Puerto Rico to boot.

I'll pick one line out of many about immigration from the Democratic Party Platform of 2016, one that the GOP will never agree to:

Actually, the Dems would have given Trump a part of the Wall between Thanksgiving and Xmas if he had kept the bargain he made: some Wall in exchange for legalizing some of the Dreamers. But he walked away.

And a year ago, Democrats offered Trump $25 billion for his entire wall in exchange for legalizing all the dreamers, but Stephen Miller got Trump to walk away because the deal didn’t include huge cuts to legal immigration, which is the real Trump-Miller holy grail. At present, there’s no reason for anyone to assume the right doesn’t still have this veto power over any deal that doesn’t cut legal immigration or that Trump would ever accept one.

Trump may need a refresher course in deal-making after the Senate rejected his take-it-or-leave-it offer on immigration back in Feb 2018. He could start by recalling who’s President, and stop giving adviser Stephen Miller a policy veto.

Presenting the shutdown as a standoff between two equally intransigent parties masks the true nature of what is going on.

Funding government operations is one thing. Security on the Mexico border is an entirely separate issue. The Trump position, endorsed by most Republicans in Congress is this: We want $5.7 billion to build a wall. If the Democrats don’t give it us, we’ll cause a lot of suffering, damage, and disruption.

Trump could with equal legitimacy (i.e. none at all) use the same tactic to try to secure any other policy goal: e.g. abolition of the estate tax; disbanding the Dept. of Education; criminalizing abortion.

Trump may try to short-circuit the whole business by declaring that the situation on the Mexico border constitutes a national emergency, thereby allowing him to divert unspent funds from other programs such as disaster relief or defense to build his wall. How it will end is anyone’s guess.

However, it’s most probable that the outcome will be decided by public opinion.

How to win the public opinion battle? Hammer the same basic points home:

a) that Trump’s tactic is that of a hostage taker demanding a ransom;

b) that the House has passed a bill to end the shutdown;

c) that Mitch McConnell won’t allow the Senate to vote on it – even though the Senate unanimously approved the same bill in December;

d) that Trump explicitly said that the shutdown would be his doing and not something he would blame the Democrats for;

e) that having repeatedly that Mexico would pay for the wall, Trump now says he needs billions of taxpayer dollars for this purpose.

I hear that Stretch Pelosi proclaimed that she will not allow Congressional Democraps to have enough seating to attend Trump's State of the Union.
And then Trump wrote her a letter cancelling her Government expensed travel arrangements on her Party Trip to Egypt & Belgium, while she continues to keep the Government Shut Down, now for 17 days. It is 27 days, not 17 days of shutdown.

“We are getting crushed!” Mr. Trump told his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, after watching some recent coverage of the shutdown, according to one person familiar with the conversation. “Why can’t we get a deal?”

Trump can stop his pain without a deal. He won't get a deal because he personally pissed off Nancy. Trump forgot he had voluntarily placed his balls in her nutcracker where she can crush him effortlessly. He can get both balls back with his signature reopening the government. He shut it down all by himself and he can start it back up in two seconds without Nancy's help. She knows it and that is why she is not giving him a Wall. She will watch Trump squirm in pain until he finally figures out how to free himself with just his signature.

Now that Nancy Pelosi has read Trump's book, she knows how to get under his skin:

“I love to crush the other side and take the benefits,” Trump wrote in a book called Think Big. “Why? Because there is nothing greater. For me it is even better than sex, and I love sex.” He went on to observe: “You hear lots of people say that a great deal is when both sides win. That is a bunch of crap. In a great deal you win — not the other side. You crush the opponent and come away with something better for yourself.”
www.wired.com/story/trump-style-nationalism-make-globalism-great-again/

"You crush the opponent" wrote Trump. Trump is crushing himself. It must be painful.

Her mumblefest is hard to translate. The Speaker-in-Hiding likely needs better dentures.

I did forget to mention that the Pelosi Government Shutdown was kicked off with her excursion to Hawaii (not her home District, which is overrun with Illegal Aliens who were not inconvenienced by any Wall)
After a day or so in DC, she led the Dems on a Partython in Puerto Rico (not her home District, which is overrun with Illegal Aliens), and was planning to be Partying now in Egypt and Belgium (not her home District, which is overrun with Illegal Aliens) - but only when she could demand Government Supplied Travel, because now she would be in danger if she took a commercial flight to Belgium or Egypt, where she might be forced to mingle with Illegal Aliens.

When she bothers to stop by DC, Speaker-in-Hiding does toil feverishly to avoid her constituent Angel Families. She doesn't seem to ever visit her home District, which is overrun with Illegal Aliens.

The best part about her being told she's have to fund the trip herself is that they were informed at the airport when they were all suited up and ready to go.

I don't know how true it is, but I heard that she was handed her bags back in the airport with a note from Trump.

Would be priceless to see a video of the look on her face when that happened.

He will keep in place two programs (DACA and TPS) that courts have already prohibited him from ending. In return, he wants his wall money.

"This is a common-sense compromise both parties should embrace," Trump said. What is he thinking?

Trump must be a bad negotiator to think he could dupe Nancy Pelosi into accepting something she already has in return for something she’s categorically said she’ll never give him.

When Trump "negotiates", one of his steps was to cancel Pelosi's flight on a military plane. Then he publicized her plans to the World's terrorists, just in case she switched to a commercial flight. Since Pelosi is next in line for the Presidency, after V.P. Mike Pence, she is a major target for death and knew Trump was calling for her assassination. What is Trump thinking he is doing? To negotiate successfully, Trump must be polite, give Pelosi something other than what the Federal Courts have already given her. That death threat from Trump means he does not want a deal. This is all a show for his Trump voters who, you know, hate Pelosi. But his responsibility is to run a government, not put on a TV show.

It wasn't a death threat. If the big bad terrorists wanted to get her and knew where she was going, she more than you or I knew if this was true or not.

At most, he was giving a bad doggy a tap on the nose and telling her that she wasn't going anywhere. If Trump knew that outing her plans would open her up to terrorist attacks, he knew she wasn't going to take a commercial flight out there and he was publicly trolling her.

And look at that.... the world is still turning after Pelosi missed this.

Trump has signed a bill guaranteeing back pay for federal workers who have been furloughed. They get paid without working for the pay.

www.barrons.com/articles/government-shutdown-cost-51547665457

The partial shutdown of the US government, the longest, hit another milestone. It is likely become more expensive for taxpayers than the thing at the center of it, Pres. Donald Trump's demand for funding for a Wall.

Trump signed legislation promising back pay for federal workers once the shutdown ends. That bill sailed through Congress. Federal workers didn't ask for the shut down, after all, and so won't be expected to suffer for it beyond the cash squeeze many are experiencing on held up wages.

Reality for taxpayers, however is that they are now guaranteed to pay government wages for services they won't receive. That money is essentially squandered. After the 2013 government shut down that affected roughly as many workers as the current one, 800,000, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the cost in back wages at $2 billion plus $500 million for benefits for 16 days.

How much does the government shutdown cost?

Some of Trump's advisers think shutdown shrinks government. Not true. The expenses are tabulated at www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/article/2019/jan/18/how-much-does-gov
ernment-shutdown-cost
/

To bring the pieces together, between paying for work not done and lost revenues, then a conservative estimate is that the shutdown costs Washington at least $12 million an hour.

That needs explanation: I would not shutdown the government because I can do two things at once: run a business and negotiate with a hostile woman. Apparently, Trump can't do both. Seriously, Trump is not being practical. His negotiating technique is terrible: if he wants something from a woman, Nancy Pelosi, he should be polite to her. Give her gifts, maybe. And beyond that, Trump only has a limited amount of time and money for negotiations, despite Trump saying he could be shut down for years, because every hour he is shutdown costs $millions. I'm thinking Trump didn't calculate those extra costs beforehand. A GOP Senator will have to remind him prior to the 2020 election that the Trump Wall is much more expensive than the asking price of $5.7 billion.

From this headline, I see why Trump is not thinking about how long the shutdown lasts or how much it costs: In Trump country, Republicans cheer on shutdown: The 'government is our biggest enemy'.

www.usatoday.com/story/news/2019/01/20/trump-country-republicans-cheer
-federal-shutdown/2549255002
/

In contrast to Trump and his voters in the previous article, Mitch McConnell is thinking very carefully about cost and consequences: “The legislation that the majority leader will bring to the floor this week would both reopen the remaining portions of the government, fund disaster relief, fund border security and address immigration issues that both Republicans and Democrats would like to address — all in one bill,” McConnell’s deputy chief of staff, Don Stewart, said in an interview.

In drafting the package broadly, McConnell hopes to put pressure on Democrats — who have insisted they will not negotiate with the president on border security until the government reopens — not to block Trump’s proposal. Stewart said the package would include seven appropriations bills that would fund agencies that have been partially closed for a month. It would also include billions of dollars in disaster relief, he said.

They are among the worst people who ever lived, sure, and they don't give a shit about anybody but themselves, but all of their re-election chances are going to be extremely low if they cause a nationwide catastrophic event by cutting everyone's food stamps.
