Left a 30-page suicide letter. Weeks after the SMILE procedure.

I know that when you lose a part of your self that was very important to you... for me, I used to be a human bloodhound with a terrific sense of smell to someone who can't smell at all... it can be very frustrating and disheartening.

But why couldn't she wait? A 30 page suicide letter note sounds more like frustration than depression. I wonder if she had a bad reaction to anesthesia, or maybe it screwed up her vision in such a way as to create a neurological problem

I can relate. I already had a problem with drinking when I was told that I was going to lose most of my teeth. Up until that point it had been managable though. I was able to go to work and get stuff done on my house. After I found that out it spiraled out of control almost overnight and I nearly killed myself with it.

It's still not easy to deal with from the practicality standpoint, and I have some legitimate concerns about whether or not dentures will even be feasible with the extensive damage that has been done, but there's a lot to be said about going through the stages and finally making your way to acceptance.

Life goes on.

It's a shame that her daughter wasn't enough for her to pull through it until she got to that point. I don't know if I'd still be here if it weren't for my niece. Maybe one day if I make the most of my 2nd chance I'll let her know what she did for me when she's old enough to really understand.

Well, to be fair to her, I'm sure there is about a zero percent chance that you're risking your life getting elective eye surgery. I've never heard any stories of anybody dying from it. I'm also not convinced that the SMILE procedure is what caused her to take her life either. Humans are complicated things.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm thinking that any negative effects she had after the operation were just the final straw.

Sure. I'm not arguing on behalf of the practice or the medical industry. You'll never find me doing that.

I was just saying that nobody should be blaming her for doing the procedure. There was not even a minuscule chance that she would lose her life in the name of vanity when she signed up for it.

I've said before the reasons that I decided against Lasik. It's just too new, and I didn't want to risk being one of the people that were doomed to going blind later in life because I was among the 1st or 2nd generation to do it without time proving that it was safe for the long haul.

But they sell these procedures as completely safe. Mistakes will always be made, but I think that otherwise they probably are safe.

This is a strange case, and I doubt we're ever going to know what really happened here. I don't think we're ever going to be able to read the 30 page suicide note, and honestly, I don't think any of us have the right to read something so personal.

I believe she was likely a very deeply troubled woman that was somehow able to live for years on the precipice of disaster without falling off of it. This may have just been the thing to throw off that precarious balance and send her careening off the edge.

Bad stuff happens to people all the time, but most people can bounce back from it. But if you're already coming from an extremely vulnerable position when it strikes, that could end in tragedy.

I'm skeptical that the SMILE procedure causes depression and I'm highly skeptical that it leads to suicide.

Like anything else in life, you've got to figure out the ROI (Return on Investment) of anything you're going to do going into it.

Caveat Emptor.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I agree with Signy. There are parts to you that are your definition of 'who you are'. I've never in my life had much of a sense of smell or taste. And I wore glasses from first or second grade. My hearing used to be phenomenal but I lost it so gradually and so early that I just laugh about being deaf. But the one constant sign of health was my low blood pressure. Then one day - overnight - it skyrocketed to stroke territory and I've been struggling even with medication to keep it down. That truly rocked me. To my core I felt vulnerable and unsafe, because I was.

But there may be some other side effect to 'smile' they don't know about yet. Here's an example: I was looking into turbinate (nose) surgery to relieve my constantly stuffed up nose. And I ran across a rare side effect called 'empty nose syndrome'. It's SO VERY distressing to the people who have it many commit suicide (at least one after murdering their surgeon). It apparently FEELS like your nose is constantly, unrelievedly, completely stuffed up even though, mechanically, you can breathe just fine.

(I thought about that and realized that even though we're not aware of it on a conscious level, we can actually feel air moving through our nose as we breathe. Generally when they do turbinate surgery they work on the lowest one of three because it's the biggest and the furthest away from your olfactory organ and your cribiform plate, which separates your brain from your nasal cavity. Anyway, when they open up the lowest turbinate completely, since the air is flowing smoothly through - laminar instead of turbulent - you can't sense the flow since air isn't impinging on any tissues. OTOH since your upper two turbinates are still swollen, you can feel the pressure. So it feels like your nose is stuffed up and no air is going through. The answer might be to have people suck menthol lozenges, since the menthol causes a cooling feeling as the air goes by. That might help people FEEL that they're breathing.)

I used to have blood pressure low enough that mine was always taken twice, they thought they made a mistake. Hard to recall now, I think lower number was 60-70, upper number just under 80, HR about 40, up to 60.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

She was gone for a while - and it was a nice vacation here! - but I've noticed she's back and more aggressive than ever. Maybe something's going on in her life that's amped-up her rages.

BTW, Hubby had Lasik years ago and it was the best thing he's ever done. Doesn't have to keep buying $300 prescription safety glasses for work. Doesn't have skin breakouts from metal touching his face.

Know what ISN'T???

"I can relate.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Six's post has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOPIC. It's just more "me-ism" that he rails about the "SJW" for doing.

Yanno, attention whoring??

It is relevent, when taken in context.

But why couldn't she wait? A 30 page suicide letter note sounds more like frustration than depression. I wonder if she had a bad reaction to anesthesia, or maybe it screwed up her vision in such a way as to create a neurological problem.

How long ago did you lose it? Do you consume Sucralose? I know that gives most folk HBP.

It was over 10 years ago when my BP suddenly went nuts. If I've ever consumed Sucralose it was many decades ago in diet soda. But I never drank a lot of it, maybe 3 or 5 cans a week.

It was about 12-15 years ago that the Poison Pesticide Sucralose was put into sodas and sweets. It started going into popcorn less than 18 years ago. Now they put it in milk, ice cream, chocolate, fruit, vegetables, juice - and since it causes headaches, in medicines and painkillers.

I know people whose blood goes off the charts within hours of taking only 1 spoonful of cough syrup containing Sucralose. Another whose 4-year old daughter got High Blood Pressure and Juvenile Diabetes, reversed after 1 month of abstaining. Another had to cancel 4 surgeries after abstaining, including brain surgery.

Well then, unless it came in something else, then I've never had Sucralose. I only sometimes drank diet cola but then I swore off any diet soda somewhere between 20 and 30 years ago.

It's in everything. Brand name Splenda. Ingredients usually place it almost last in the list. But sometimes this trichlorinate is halfway up the ingredients list.

About a half dozen times a year Meth Mouth, usually when we go on vacation. You know, that thing you also can't afford...

We do eat Sushi a lot. Hardly fast food, though.

You know, every week someone here says something extra special dense, and today you win the cake, genius

Did you know that the dark food coloring in cokes (especially 20 years ago) is made from burnt sulfur? Did you know if you breathe sulfur it makes your lungs stop functioning? That's without talking about the aspertame, which ALSO contains sulfur... What do you think all that crap did to your kidneys and bladder?

Did you know that people who drank diet cokes for extended periods were 43% more likely to experience "cardiac episodes" than people who drank regular cokes?

Did you know they advise people with head injuries not to drink aspartame because it can make them worse?

You really believe that because they contained water they weren't bad for you??

No wonder the FDA has gotten away with so much with oblivious people like you
