Frenchman Crosses Channel on ‘Flyboard’

I've seen guys in America, Europe and Asia design these scifi looking flying things and test them out on social media

these are finally working, this one looks like it finally works

He failed the first time but came back 1 week later to try again

I'm amazed at how good these flying devices get, maybe Musk's fly cars thing could happen after all and this isn't science 'fiction' anymore but science real

The English French Channel is the body of water that separates Southern England from northern France and links the southern part of the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.

Franky Zapata stands on his jet-powered "flyboard" after he took off from Sangatte, France, Aug. 4, 2019, in an attempt to fly across the 35-kilometer (22-mile) Channel crossing in 20 minutes.

ST. MARGARET'S BAY, ENGLAND - Is it a bird? A plane? No, it's a French inventor flying over the English Channel on his hoverboard.

Looking like a superhero, Franky Zapata successfully completed the famed 35-kilometer (22-mile) journey in just 22 minutes Sunday morning, reaching speeds of up to 177 kilometers per hour (110 mph) on the flyboard that has made him a French household name.

last week he failed at English Channel flyover attempt

Cool. I heard about his failure but glad that he made it this time.

I was going to say video or it didn't happen, but what a laugh that is. As if you could even tell the difference these days from a true video or a lie if it's got a production budget, which they've clearly got here.

But c'mon...

Nobody made the connection here to the Rocketeer?

"Your body resists the wind, and because the board is attached to my feet, all my body has to resist to the wind," he told reporters. "I tried to enjoy it and not think about the pain."

Makes you wonder why he doesn't use a backpack unit like the Rocketeer though. It probably is because he wouldn't have full control over the range of motion and inertia because to travel backward the fuel would have to burn through him, I guess.

That being said, this guy must have an amazing core workout routine to be able to withstand this. I mean, seriously, they even made a joke on 30 Rock about how after 30 years old Liz and another one of her single female friends worry about falling down in the shower and nobody would be there to help them or check in on them if they did.

Now imagine having to stand straight up on a unit that's clamped to your feet, fighting not only the wind pressures that can vary greatly from second to second, but also the fact that a human being standing up while flying straight forward is about the least aerodynamic entity that has ever taken flight in the air.

The more I think about this, the more I don't believe it's real. Not only does it seem physically impossible, but I don't know how you'd be able to put an adult male in the air for 20 minutes with only 2 small tanks of kerosene.

Yeah... I'm calling BS. This is just about as real as Bigfoot.

I was wondering the same thing. I used to do some extreme bicycling, and the biggest energy-hog is wind resistance, which goes up exponentially with velocity. Aside from being lofted, I think it would take a LOT of fuel to reach those speeds. I was looking for sufficient fuel tanks, but didn't see any.

By comparison, here's the historic jetpack.

Looks like that was old news and never took off (pun maybe intended).

There was also a comic that was going to feature the black female lead, but that was cancelled right before it went into production. This all happened sometime in 2018. I think they probably figured that the first movie didn't do all that well with a white male lead and didn't want to even bother culturally appropriating it because it was bound to lose money in an era where gender/race swaps continue to happen and more often than not lead to hemorrhaging of money.

That being said, Disney is making an animated kid show with a girl wearing the rocket.

Cute. I'm sure my niece will love it.

It's real, but there's a caveat:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franky_Zapata
On 4 August 2019, Zapata crossed the English Channel, with a refuelling stop at midpoint, on a Flyboard Air.[1]

The Flyboard is capable of about 10 minutes of flight time according to wikipedia.

The only ones I've seen that look legit are the ones where water propulsion is putting them up in the air, and they're tied to the back of a boat like a para sailer.

The videos of this thing in action that aren't ultra-produced and are more home video type look fake as hell, like how George Lucas was making hovercrafts look like they were floating back in the late 70's.

I knew about the supposed re-fueling, that's why I mentioned that there's no way that an adult male is being suspended in air for 20 minutes off of 2 tiny tanks of kerosene.

Not buying it.

Looks legit.

Heck, I give him bonus points for figuring out HOW to refuel in mid air.

Flight boards have a claimed flying time equivalent to newer more modern jet packs. So there's nothing inherently outlandish about the idea. But I can imagine all sorts of stability problems, so until I see some evidence of how it's either not a problem or how it specifically got solved, I'll pass on an opinion either way.

If that thing is capable of doing half of what those fake videos say that it does, that guy has a core so rock solid he could actually scale the sides of cliffs bare handed like Ethan Hunt.

Maybe it is real, and the only reason that nobody ever talks about it in the media is because it's the most worthless invention ever made that nobody would ever be able to use.
