Yanno, there are Democratic debates going on right now. Why don't you tell us who among them has a reasonable platform and a chance at beating Trump legitimately instead of continuing to prep excuses for another loss in 2020?

Deutsche and Wall Street banks reportedly just gave Congress thousands of documents related to Russians with possible ties to Trump

Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo have been giving thousands of documents to congressional committees investigating whether President Trump had links to Russia, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with congressional probes.

The Journal also said that some banks were giving documents related to the president's own business, the Trump Organization, to New York state investigators.
Investigators for the House Financial Services Committee and the House Intelligence Committee are reportedly working on a joint probe into whether there was potential foreign influence on Trump and his family.

I opened up the Mueller Report randomly and found this story about Trump ordering people to lie and the people told Trump they would not:

2. The President Seeks to Have McGahn Dispute the Press Reports

On January 26, 2018, the President’s personal counsel called McGahn’s attorney and said that the President wanted McGahn to put out a statement denying that he had been asked to fire the Special Counsel and that he had threatened to quit in protest.784 McGahn’s attorney spoke with McGahn about that request and then called the President’s personal counsel to relay that McGahn would not make a statement.785 McGahn’s attorney informed the President’s personal counsel that the Times story was accurate in reporting that the President wanted the Special Counsel removed.786 Accordingly, McGahn’s attorney said, although the article was inaccurate in some other respects, McGahn could not comply with the President’s request to dispute the story.787 Hicks recalled relaying to the President that one of his attorneys had spoken to McGahn’s attorney about the issue.788

On February 4, 2018, Priebus appeared on Meet the Press and said he had not heard the President say that he wanted the Special Counsel fired.791 After Priebus’s appearance, the President called Priebus and said he did a great job on Meet the Press.792 The President also told Priebus that the President had “never said any of those things about” the Special Counsel.793

The next day, on February 5, 2018, the President complained about the Times article to Porter.794 The President told Porter that the article was “bullshit” and he had not sought to terminate the Special Counsel.795 The President said that McGahn leaked to the media to make himself look good.796 The President then directed Porter to tell McGahn to create a record to make clear that the President never directed McGahn to fire the Special Counsel.797 Porter thought the matter should be handled by the White House communications office, but the President said he wanted McGahn to write a letter to the file “for our records” and wanted something beyond a press statement to demonstrate that the reporting was inaccurate.798 The President referred to McGahn as a “lying bastard” and said that he wanted a record from him.799 Porter recalled the President saying something to the effect of, “If he doesn’t write a letter, then maybe I’ll have to get rid of him.”800

Later that day, Porter spoke to McGahn to deliver the President’s message.801 Porter told McGahn that he had to write a letter to dispute that he was ever ordered to terminate the Special Counsel.802 McGahn shrugged off the request, explaining that the media reports were true.803 McGahn told Porter that the President had been insistent on firing the Special Counsel and that McGahn had planned to resign rather than carry out the order, although he had not personally told the President he intended to quit.804 Porter told McGahn that the President suggested that McGahn would be fired if he did not write the letter.80S McGahn dismissed the threat, saying that the optics would be terrible if the President followed through with firing him on that basis.806 McGahn said he would not write the letter the President had requested.807 Porter said that to his knowledge the issue of McGahn’s letter never came up with the President again, but Porter did recall telling Kelly about his conversation with McGahn.808

The Other Reason to Impeach — Trump’s Increasing Lunacy

In all of the calculations about whether there is sufficient evidence to impeach, and what effect impeachment would have on the 2020 election, the most obvious reasons keep being ignored:

He makes impulsive decisions, makes stuff up, alienates allies, refuses to vet prospective nominees, doesn’t read briefing materials, reverses policies on a dime, and so on. As his Republican allies know all too well, he is out of his mind.

Trump incautiously contends that Joe Biden is “not playing with a full deck.” Trump doesn’t have a picture card in his hand.

If we needed one more bit of evidence, we now have . . . Greenland.

The ice-man cometh.

If someone at The Onion had made the Greenland story up, the editors would have rejected it as too far-fetched. But Trump’s aides have now confirmed that he has been badgering them for weeks to find out how he can buy Greenland.

Imagine his thought processes. With global warming, there are all these minerals ready to be exploited. Or maybe it can be a source of the ice that the rest of the world is losing. Today, Greenland; tomorrow Antarctica.

The fact that Greenland is not for sale doesn’t seem to deter him. In Trumpworld, everyone is for sale. It’s just a matter of price.

When he finally goes, in the spirit of Napoleon’s exile to Elba, Greenland would be a great place to put Trump on ice.

Lawyers for Deutsche Bank and Capital One repeatedly refused Friday to tell an appellate court in New York whether the banks are in possession of President Donald Trump's tax returns.

"Should we go to court and seek an order? I'm serious. We need to know," US Circuit Judge Peter W. Hall told a lawyer for Deutsche Bank. After several minutes of argument on the subject, the court directed the lawyers to file letters under seal within 48 hours saying whether the banks have Trump's tax returns.

"Why is it that Deutsche Bank would lend him money when no other bank would touch him?" Douglas Letter, general counsel for the House, said Friday. Letter said the committee intends to use the subpoenaed material to determine whether there should be additional banking regulation that might curb the type of loans Trump received.

www.cnn.com/2019/08/23/politics/trump-tax-return-hearing/index.html

Trump would not be so ridiculously obstinate about his tax returns if he wasn't a tax cheater. Maybe in the next 48 hours he will order, secretly, that those tax returns be shredded. That way nobody can know what was in them, making it impossible to charge Trump with tax evasion. Congress will have to sue to discover whether copies exist anywhere. Trump's lawyers, as directed by their client, will refuse to answer for months and months about what happened to the returns. Trump will tweet about a witch hunt for his tax returns, all the while pretending he can't make his returns available to Congress, but only because he is being sued by Congress. If only Congress would drop the lawsuit, Trump would be glad to give Congress a copy. It's another version of "I can't give you my tax returns because I'm being audited."

About that audit:

A federal whistleblower is alleging possible improper interference with the IRS process of auditing President Donald Trump's tax returns, according to multiple reports Wednesday. In separate reports, Politico and NBC News said the federal worker made the allegations to the House Ways and Means Committee, citing a court motion by House Democrats in their lawsuit to force the release of Trump's tax returns. According to NBC News, the court filing included a letter from committee chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, which said the House panel "received an unsolicited communication from a federal employee setting forth credible allegations of 'evidence of possible misconduct' - specifically, potential 'inappropriate efforts to influence the mandatory audit program.'" Details of potential interference were not mentioned.

There’s an easy fix for the President. He should release his tax returns as he promised during the campaign and follow the precedent of every president since 1973.

I feel 98% certain that at some point we'll see his returns. Will I be confident they are his actual returns? They've almost become like Obama's birth certificate or Epstein's "suicide." And even if they are shown and they reveal the kind of corruption that Cohen pointed to, will anything happen? I know the NY AG is pressing hard, but until I hear that an action or crime by Trump can lead to the FBI doing a Manafort on him, I won't get too excited.

When the IRS does an audit of real estate tycoons, the IRS does NOT go to sellers/buyers who dealt with the tycoon to discover the price paid for the real estate. Many buyers/sellers won't voluntarily share that number with anyone, but it is essential to know those numbers to prove if the real estate tycoon cheated on his reported income.

Luckily, Congress can subpoena buyers/sellers for the real numbers. It might take thousands of manhours to figure out if Trump cheated, but it can be done if the Speaker of the House wants it done. In the past, Speakers didn't want to know.

Vice President Spiro Agnew's tax return is one example where the Speaker didn't care to know. Agnew only got into trouble because the person who was paying Agnew bribes talked. Agnew never did pay the taxes he owed on those bribes because he made a deal to resign, very quietly, in exchange for clemency. Trump might be another case where all Republicans in Congress (and a few Democrats) don't care to know. They might let Trump go free if he agrees to go quietly, after losing an election. Congress knows Trump could really stir up a crisis if he doesn't get an agreement to ignore his tax cheating. The stubborn old fool might flat-out refuse to leave the White House until he gets tax forgiveness. He is crazy. There is no way to know how ridiculous and shameless he will be at the end.

Trump is making threats that he can do any nutty thing that comes to mind:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump tweeted
For all of the Fake News Reporters that don’t have a clue as to what the law is relative to Presidential powers, China, etc., try looking at the Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977. Case closed!
8:58 PM - 23 Aug 2019
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1165111122510237696

The above tweet was launched after the two tweets below. He can't do the things he thinks he can do in those tweets: order the Federal Reserve to do as Trump pleases; order American companies to do as he pleases; order China to do as he pleases. But if he tries mightily, he will make a mighty mess of it. He is just not mentally competent to do the job. He is too emotionally unstable and too stupid.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 1h
As usual, the Fed did NOTHING! It is incredible that they can "speak" without knowing or asking what I am doing, which will be announced shortly. We have a very strong dollar and a very weak Fed. I will work "brilliantly" with both, and the U.S. will do great.......My only question is, who is our bigger enemy. Jay Powell or Chairman Xi?
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1164914610836783104

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 1h
Our Country has lost, stupidly, Trillions of Dollars with China over many years.
They have stolen our Intellectual Property at a rate of Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year, & they want to continue. I won't let that happen! We don't need China and, frankly, would be far........better off without them. The vast amounts of money made and stolen by China from the United States, year after year, for decades, will and must STOP. Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing......your companies HOME and making your products in the USA. I will be responding to China's Tariffs this afternoon. This is a GREAT opportunity for the United States. Also, I am ordering all carriers, including Fed Ex, Amazon, UPS and the Post Office, to SEARCH FOR & REFUSE,........all deliveries of Fentanyl from China (or anywhere else!). Fentanyl kills 100,000 Americans a year. President Xi said this would stop - it didn't. Our Economy, because of our gains in the last 2 1/2 years, is MUCH larger than that of China. We will keep it that way!

Might be best to just keep gathering facts until Trump loses in 2020. Then put him in jail and fine him into bankruptcy.

After all, Barr will be gone first thing and they can put Mueller back in charge. Fun to think about.

41 Dems have come out "in favor of impeachment since Mueller testified before Congress in July. Congressman Steve Cohen argues the investigation is 'beyond the stage of simply having an inquiry' but Trump 'should be impeached.'

Trump's tax fraud is the thing I am most certain he is guilty of. Back in the real world, 81 to 84 percent of Americans also think it is wrong. If accountants can show that Trump underpaid his taxes by a few billion dollars, I think even Republicans would insist he pay those taxes, although they wouldn't want him to go to jail for it. That will be where the Democrats disagree. They'd want 5 years in federal prison for Trump.

Estimates of U.S. Federal Revenue Lost to Tax Evasion by guys like Trump run into the trillions of dollars, enough to cut the deficit to zero. Even Republicans would like a zero deficit! They'd want Trump to pay, although they would quibble over the exact amount.

For all we really know, Trump might have actually paid his taxes (lol) and his real problem is Vraylar related: Elderly people with dementia-related psychosis (having lost touch with reality due to confusion and memory loss) taking medicines like Vraylar are at an increased risk of death. Easily, Trump could be out of his itty-bitty mind and yet he continues to amuses me. I must say that sane Mike Pence as Prez wouldn't be any fun compared to silly old Trump.

Wouldn't it be smart to wait to impeach? Think about it. If Trump loses all his wrong doings will hit the courts where he'll surely lose tons of money in lawyer fees and fines. Jail is also on the table if dems win. No way the voters would allow for Trump to be pardoned.

Now, if he wins. On the day he is sworn in the dems hit him with impeachment. Anyway you look at it it's a win.

What was the Resolution number which started this Impeachment Investigation?

The House Resolution number, or the Judiciary Committee Resolution number?

It must have been 26 July or sooner, since this thread announced it on that day.

I'll point out for the dummies here that the Mueller investigation revolved around a foreign country helping Trump in the election by providing dirt on Trumps opponent. It further revealed Trump tried to cover it up. Lies, no collusion said Trump.

Here we go again. Trump trying to blackmail Ukraine into colluding with him in the upcoming elections by providing dirt on one of Trumps opponents. We are further learning that Trump has been trying to cover it up.

You can't make this shit up folks.

The only problem with this story is the lack of motive.

Trump doesn't need any dirt on any one of these clowns.

Not only can't any of them provide a message that the people want to hear, but amidst the 24/7 bashing Trump has received by the MSM for 3 years now, his approval rating is exactly where Obama's was 8 years ago.

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-approval-rating-higher-obama-1460076

Quote:

President Donald Trump's job approval rating this week averaged across major polls surpassed that of his predecessor President Barack Obama at the same time eight years ago, giving some actual good news to Trump who is known to cite only conservative-leaning polls to bolster his image.

Trump's approval rating on Wednesday was 44.3 percent, according to a Real Clear Politics average of more than a half-dozen major polls. That is higher than Obama's average approval rating of 43.9 percent on September 18, 2011, by the same measure.

The 45th president's average approval rating surpassed that of his predecessor on Monday and stayed on top for the next two days. Trump's average approval rating on Monday was 44.1 percent compared to Obama's 43.9 percent on September 16, 2011, and 44 percent on Tuesday compared to Obama's 43.8 percent on September 17, 2011.

Why would Trump want to blackmail any of them?

I'd be more concerned, if I were you, that everybody up on that Primary stage is working for Trump.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

PELOSI TELLS NADLER TO GIVE UP ON HIS OBSSESSION ABOUT IMPEACHMENT

Quote:

Feel free to leak this': Inside the Pelosi-Nadler impeachment schism

The longtime allies are increasingly in conflict over the push to oust President Donald Trump.

By SARAH FERRIS, HEATHER CAYGLE and JOHN BRESNAHAN

In a closed-door meeting last week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stunned lawmakers and aides with a swipe at Democratic staff on the House Judiciary Committee.

Pelosi criticized the panel’s handling of impeachment in harsh terms, complaining committee aides have advanced the push for ousting President Donald Trump far beyond where the House Democratic Caucus stands. Democrats simply don’t have the votes on the floor to impeach Trump, Pelosi said.

“And you can feel free to leak this,” Pelosi added, according to multiple people in the room. Pelosi’s office declined to comment on the meeting.

It was the latest sign of the widening schism between Pelosi and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, two longtime allies who are increasingly in conflict over where to guide the party at one of its most critical moments.

Both Pelosi and Nadler, who have served in the House together for more than 25 years, insist their relationship remains strong. But their rift over impeachment is getting harder and harder to paper over amid Democrats’ flailing messaging on the topic and a growing divide in the caucus.

Whether the two veteran lawmakers can get on the same page will determine whether the party avoids a rupture that threatens its chances of holding on to the House majority and beating Trump in 2020.

“I think the speaker wants to be careful of all the different members of the caucus,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a vocal impeachment advocate. “She doesn’t always want to use the word ‘impeachment’ but believe me, she signed off on every piece of what has been put forward.”

Yet the gap between Pelosi and Nadler has been on full display lately.

The Judiciary Committee held what it billed as its first “impeachment hearing” on Tuesday with former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, whose outright refusal to answer questions only bolstered Democrats’ impeachment investigation, Nadler said.

But at the very same moment, Pelosi was stressing in a private meeting with moderate Democrats that the caucus would be cautious as it approaches whether to move forward on impeachment, according to multiple attendees.

“Nadler is talking about law, Pelosi is talking about politics,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, when asked about the divide between the two senior Democrats. “Nadler is looking at high crimes and misdemeanors, and we are inundated with them in the Judiciary Committee. But Pelosi is looking at the political side of it.”

Raskin, though, insisted the Pelosi-Nadler split isn’t hurting Democrats.

“I think it is fully, comprehensively representing the divergent opinion in the country what we need to do, and it’s too early to tell,” Raskin said. “Everyone wants to jump to the end, to say, ‘What’s the end of the story?' But we’re just in the middle of it.”

Nadler, one of the most aggressive impeachment backers among senior Democrats, has been careful not to clash directly with Pelosi since the start of his committee’s probe.

Yet the New York Democrat has ramped up his rhetoric over the summer, declaring that the House is in “formal impeachment proceedings” even as Pelosi has maintained her own careful message that the House is only weighing the possibility. At a news conference last week, she refused to even utter the “I-word.”

Nadler has made clear where he stands: Trump should be impeached. Now.

“Personally, I think the president ought to be impeached,” Nadler told WNYC’s Brian Lehrer on Monday in his strongest comments to date backing impeachment. But Nadler also acknowledged Democrats “cannot impeach the president against the will of the American people,” reiterating the point Pelosi has hammered again and again since she returned to the speakership in January.

A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday shows 37 percent of voters support beginning impeachment proceedings, while 50 percent oppose doing so; 12 percent are undecided.

Pelosi has also expressed skepticism with the notion of impeaching Trump in the House only for him to be acquitted in a Senate trial — and then surely claim exoneration on the campaign trail.

Several Democrats have speculated that Nadler’s hard line on impeachment is partly driven by concerns with his political standing on the left in his New York City district as he faces his toughest primary challenge in decades. Nadler has also come under intense pressure from Trump’s fiercest critics on the Judiciary Committee who have actively lobbied for impeachment for months.

Meanwhile, Nadler’s allies blame Pelosi for the messaging stumbles, pointing to a hard-to-read strategy that has irked liberals by refusing to definitively say if the House is in an impeachment inquiry.

In a statement to POLITICO, a Nadler spokesman said Pelosi has been “fully supportive of our investigative work,” from court filings to hearing procedures.

“There is no disagreement in the investigative work we have before us and we will continue to work closely with leadership as we move forward,” Nadler spokesman Daniel Schwarz added.

Pelosi aides added that Nadler has coordinated with her office on investigations, legal strategy and messaging. Pelosi has signed off on all the Judiciary Committee’s court filings targeting the Trump administration, which is where the caucus first formally signaled it was engaged in an impeachment investigation.

“Speaker Pelosi has repeatedly said she supports Chairman Nadler and House Judiciary’s investigation to determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment, its procedures and efforts to uncover the truth for the American people,” spokeswoman Ashley Etienne wrote in a statement.

Yet privately, Pelosi has voiced frustrations with Nadler’s committee, and not just that staff has been moving ahead as though the House were already in formal impeachment proceedings. She was also concerned with reports that Judiciary staff were lobbying at least one of the panel’s members who had not yet come out for a formal impeachment inquiry, according to a source familiar with her frustrations.

Pelosi and Nadler have long been hurtling down this path — clashing behind closed doors even as they tried to maintain a united front for the cameras.

Nadler was deferential to Pelosi for months, refusing to even say publicly whether he supported opening an impeachment inquiry. Privately, Nadler was petitioning Pelosi to greenlight a formal impeachment investigation within his committee, arguing it would streamline House Democrats’ sprawling Trump-related probes across multiple panels.

But Nadler was rebuffed repeatedly by Pelosi, who went so far as to say she’d rather see Trump “in prison” before she moved forward with impeachment during one particularly tense meeting in June.

Pelosi has also agreed to specific language regarding impeachment that her allies say Nadler has blown past.

“She signed off on that, that’s where Nadler should have stayed,” one aide familiar with Pelosi’s thinking said.

The clash underscores a simple reality of the caucus: a vocal progressive wing is growing frustrated with inaction, while vulnerable moderates are begging to be shielded from the glare of impeachment.

Nadler has become the driving force for the first group, just as Pelosi protects the second.

“They have different jobs,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), adding that Pelosi is trying to appease both factions.

“This role she’s playing is going to be very important to protect the caucus, and the majority, and a lot of the new members,” he said, “while also allowing the running room for people like Mr. Nadler and the Judiciary Committee to proceed.”

Indeed.

One important point in the story is that 50% of voters do NOT want Trump impeached, 12% haven't decided, and only 37% want impeachment. That 37% represents most, but not even all registered Democrats (40%). Obviously Dems need more than 37% to win an election. The problem is that this is silly-season (primaries) when Dems politicians wind up swinging waaaaaaay over to the left because they're only running against other Dems for registered Dem votes, so they have an extremely narrow agenda at the moment.

THE SAME GOES FOR REPUBLICANS.

I agree with JO, the two-party system has a pernicious effect on American politics, and policy. If there were truly open primaries then candidates would have to appeal to independents and even Democrats/ Republicans and we might see a more reasonable ticket emerge.

But it's not just the primaries. As I've been listening to The PBS Newshour (I can't bear to sit down and do nothing but watch it), Nadler - for example - is bending HIS role in the House to appease his PARTICULAR constituents which are the democrats in New York's 10th congressional district. Pelosi is bending HER role in the House to protect democrats in vulnerable districts. The democrat-controlled House is passing bill after bill without even the pretense of discussion and debate and bipartisanship. The Senate democrats are doing their best to be unnoticed political wallpaper.

NO DEMOCRATS in Congress are even pretending to do the people's business. And that's in the context of Trump's pretty good PR where he's at least talking about the issues that he campaigned on. Which is why I think Congressional democrats will continue to have no legitimacy with the generic voter.

BTW, I also think it's the difference between Obama's approval ratings over time v Trump's. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=63291 LOL Obama came in talking a good game about hope and change. But then he secretively backed away from ... Closing GITMO. Holding Wall Street financialists accountable. Transparency. Full disclosure of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and federal actions. Respecting everyday citizens' freedom from government surveillance. The public option. And on, and on, and on.

Obama was never going to win over republicans. But democrats and independents didn't so much rebuke Obama, as give up on him as just another shill full of empty campaign promises. Which is why his approval rating slowly slipped over time as people noticed he was very, very quiet about his campaign messages.

Trump isn't doing that.

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

Ok, this is deep in the weeds and far from impeachment, but Nadler is not running unopposed in his 10th District. He has a challenger (Lindsey Boylan) who is a bit further to the left than he is. He has to make a claim on SOMEthing, even if his only claim is Trump Derangement Syndrome.
