I agree about the Nooalf "spelling" problem ... it's inconsistent with well-known English language letter combinations and worse, it's inconsitent with itself.

Take the word "yirz". The "i" is Nooalf is used as a "short i" (iz), a "semi-long i" AND a "short i" in the same word! (riting), and ... even more confusingly ... a "long e" (yirz). While I think that Inglish shood bee fohnetik, Nooalf duzn't eevn kum klohs.

I think what possibly makes it hard is the limited character set afforded at FFF.net.

If you look at the NQaLF, or NOOALF site, there's a ton of characters that are used there that you're not going to find on a keyboard (and very doubtful that many of them are even in the ASCII set). It almost looks like the Cyrillic characters at a quick glance. So when JO's posting here, it's almost as if he's posting in a third hybrid language.

Interestingly though, when looking at the Poster on the PRoDUKS page, "W" is for Witch... spelled "WIC". I don't know how that would be spelled with the full arsenal of alternate characters available to you, but from what I can tell of that small picture of the poster, it seems to use only characters available in the English alphabet when showing the pronunciations of the words. "C" would be the "tch" sound both in witch and watch.

I'm assuming that the "O" in wocing is the "a" in watching, but I can't tell anything from that poster to confirm that. I do, however, see an "O" in Shark (SORK), and that leads me to more confusion in this issue.

If you look in any dikshunaree you'll see a pronunciation guide with all kinds of special characters like upside down "e" etc which tracks all of the sounds of the English language, so if you're going to resort to special characters why not just go with what's already been established?

BTW ... KIKI ... many people have said that phonetic language won't work because of the various accents around the world but ... how does that work with the pronunciation guides, then? Is there a different edition for Ozzie-speak than there is for Singapore-speak or Chicago-speak?

Anyway, alternatively, just like with other (phonetic) languages, you can use known letter combinations to indicate specific sounds, and that would be my preference since it wouldn't require a whole new typography and a whole new generation of teaching.

But as I just posted, JO's language is not only inconsistent with known English-language letter combinations, it's inconsistent with itself. (iz, riting, yirz). He recreates the same problem that he's trying to solve.

I don't think consonants are that bad when it comes to spelling. There's only a few that don't have good representations, like the g in judge, which is pronounced like a soft z. A ... whaaaaa ..?? It's not even a concept in English I ever ran across, though one other language that I know of has three different hardnesses of z all recognized in its alphabet (as a z, a z with one dot above it, and a z with two dots above it).

But the vowels. Ayyyy, those vowels!

As for accents and phonetics ... here's a joke, which was told as a true story. So a guy goes into a restaurant in the south and the waitress is trying to tell him what the potato side is, with no success. Exasperated he finally spells it out - do you mean you have b.a.l.l.e.d potatoes, or b.a.l.d. potatoes? And she says NO! they're B.O.I.L.E.D potatoes!

Anyway, European languages are phonetic and they still manage to have dialects and variable accents! I was at my local restaurant when a couple was speaking in some foreign language I really couldn't identify. I swear it sounded like some Slavic tongue. But it was New Orleans French. I know French somewhat, and I could NOT pick up a single word! but it was the accent that really threw me.

So, we've already decided what the correct pronunciations are (in the dictionary), but if we ever get around to phonetic spelling I don't think it's going to change anyone's accent too much. I'm guessing for them what we think of as phonetic spelling will just be some version of non-phonetic spelling that they'll just get accustomed to.

We already have good examples of that. Bostonians drop the last "r" - so car becomes cah, and chowder becomes chowdah - even though it clearly exists in the spelling and they can say that sound everywhere else!
