Belief is thinking that something is so despite lack of evidence, or (sometimes) in the face of evidence to the contrary. Some Xtians believe the earth is 6,000 years old DESPITE the evidence of layers laid down over millions of years and fossils of long=dead creatures embedded in them. Some people STILL believe the earth is flat despite routine circumnavigation, photos from space etc. People "believe" in god, or gods BECAUSE there is no evidence supporting it (them). If there were actual reliable evidence, "god" wouldn't be a "belief" it would be a fact, or at least a well-supported hypothesis.

Science is based on evidence.

Now, there are two assumptions behind science for which there is no evidence.
The first assumption is that we live in a real world. (Philosophically, you can't prove that there's a real world, this might all be a very complex dream ...)
The second part is that we come to know it through our senses (Once again, our senses COULD be fooling us; we might just be living in our dream, or even in someone else's.)

But if we accept that we do indeed live in a real world and that our senses tell us something about it (even if incompletely) then you can build a philosophy of science from that.

You guys sure about that? I mean, Nilbog claims to have only wasted 6 minutes digging up the thread I've been asking her to show me where I claimed the earth was flat and everybody on the board was trying to explain to me how it's not.

It took her a few weeks to find it, but she finally did. And it was just a conversation between her and I, with a few posts of JSF's thrown in there too. And, wouldn't you know it, I never once said that I believed that the earth was flat.

All I was saying was that I try to keep an open mind to all possibilities, and since Nilbog is already pretty much halfway there by giving her own beliefs over to the possibility of us living in a simulated reality, then there is no reason why the rules can't be changed every day and everything is up for grabs.

The point being, she remembered a fictionalized version of this exchange in her head all of this time, and even upon finding it again (and assuming that she actually read it again before posting it), she still is digging in her heels on the issue and claiming that the conversation is the fictionalized one she imagines in her head and not the actual conversation that took place.
