Trump use of military to quell protest could stop rebounding markets and economy in their tracks, warns influential economist

www.marketwatch.com/story/stocks-could-repeat-march-troubles-if-trump-
sends-in-the-military-warns-top-economist-2020-06-02

Our call of the day, from Tim Duy, an economics professor at the University of Oregon, warns that stocks may run into trouble if we see troops on the streets of America.

“The best-case scenario is that the riots soon revert to continuous, massive, but peaceful protests. The worse-case scenario is that President Donald Trump acts on his threat to use military force to end the riots,” writes Duy in his influential Fed Watch blog.

“Aside from the obvious additional damage to the nation’s social fabric, widespread use of military force domestically would I suspect inflame the situation further, worsen consumer activity, and slow the progress of recovery,” he says.

What’s more, Congress would divide further, possibly delaying the next fiscal support bill — analysts see another one coming by July. That is as large crowd gatherings and closed testing facilities have triggered concerns over a surge of COVID-19 cases in weeks to come, possibly hampering reopenings, he adds.

While more aid to counter the pandemic fallout, alongside continued supportive action by the Federal Reserve, offers a decent setup for financial markets, Duy says that story “feels more vulnerable this week.”

“Needless to say, widespread military action against U.S. citizens coupled with a resurgence in COVID-19 cases would be…bad. The psychology could turn against equities quickly, just as it did in March,” he says.

Seriously. You'd think 6ix would want more cops dead to help bring down over population - which he says is the real problem. Maybe when the military gets here in they can start mowing down protestors and cops until we reach some kind of population balance. If we don't start killing lots of people soon something bad is going to happen. Like maybe even milk shortages.

Foreign reporters Amelia Brace and Tim Myers with Australia’s 7NEWS were in the crowd covering the demonstration live on air when officers suddenly began to violently disperse the protesters to make room for President Donald Trump’s photo op in front of a nearby church.

In the live video footage of the scene, Brace, standing off-camera, tells her anchors back home that she and her camera operator Tim Myers had just been shot at with rubber bullets while trying to flee from the approaching officers, and that Myers had been hit. As she’s saying this, the crowd starts to run again: “Here we go, they’re moving through again!” she says, as officers in riot gear rush at the protesters.

As she’s describing the scene, an officer appears right in front of the camera, and seems to punch Myers in the face with his fist as Brace shouts “Media!” The camera drops to the ground and goes black for a few seconds as the anchors back in Australia shout, “Whoa!”

“Amelia, can you hear us?” one of the anchors asks. “Are you okay? Or your cameraman?” Neither Brace nor Myers respond, but the camera resumes filming the scene. “It looks like a policeman just punched our cameraman,” an anchor says.

Brace then appears back on screen. “You heard us yelling that we were media, but they don’t care,” Brace tells the anchors. “They’re being indiscriminate at the moment. They chased us down that street.”

“You really saw the way they dealt with my cameraman Tim there — quite violent. They don’t really care who they’re targeting at the moment,” Brace continues.

Videos of the incident immediately circulated online. Brett McGurk, Trump’s former top anti-ISIS diplomat — tweeted it as well, commenting, “Here’s how this scene was viewed live in Australia. One of America’s closest and most dependable allies.”

https://twitter.com/brett_mcgurk/status/1267662905383596032

Australia’s conservative Prime Minister Scott Morrison — who has been friendly to the Trump administration — told 7NEWS that the channel would have the government’s support should it want to file a formal complaint against the US government. He also called on the US Embassy in Australia to apologize for the violence — leading to a Twitter statement from Ambassador Arthur Culvahouse Jr. hours later.

Minneapolis Police Union President: “I’ve Been Involved in Three Shootings Myself, and Not a One of Them Has Bothered Me”

https://theintercept.com/2020/06/02/minneapolis-police-union-bob-kroll
-shootings
/

In an interview in April, Lt. Bob Kroll, head of Minneapolis’s police union, said that he and a majority of the Minneapolis Police Officers’ Federation’s board have been involved in police shootings. Kroll said that he and the officers on the union’s board were not bothered by the shootings, comparing themselves favorably to other officers.

“There’s been a big influx of PTSD,” Kroll said. “But I’ve been involved in three shootings myself, and not one of them has bothered me. Maybe I’m different.”

His comments underscore the rampant nature of police violence in the United States. The number of times police officers fire their weapons swamps the level of violence in most other countries, where authorities rely on nonlethal methods of coercion, persuasion, or control. Many police officers live with post-traumatic stress disorder induced by the violence associated with policing.

But not Kroll’s crew, he said. “Out of the 10 board members, over half of them have been involved in armed encounters, and several of us multiple. We don’t seem to have problems,” he said. “Certainly getting shot at and shooting people takes a different toll, but if you’re in this job and you’ve seen too much blood and gore and dead people then you’ve signed up for the wrong job.”

Kroll has been a central figure in the unfolding protests and riots following the killing of George Floyd by Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin.

Why extreme actions shouldn’t delegitimize a protest

It’s by now a well-worn script: faced with social injustices and unaddressed grievances, mass numbers of people mobilize to protest publicly, and sometimes that action spills over into acts of violence and vandalism. Government officials then pounce on the opportunity to denounce the protest movement as immoral and reprehensible, and cast protesters as rioters, extremists, even terrorists.

It can be tempting to idealize protests as peaceful, and civil disobedience as just that: civil. But an uncritical rejection of more forceful protest methods can obscure uncomfortable and complicated truths: for example, that state violence, whether in the form of institutionalized racism or the deployment of so-called “non-lethal” weapons like rubber bullets and tear gas, is normalized and accepted, whereas protesters are condemned as violent mobs as soon as a brick is hurled and a barricade burned. Governments often preach the value of “civility,” calling for calm dialogue over street clashes, without acknowledging its own repressive incivility. As the political philosopher Candice Delmas writes in her book A Duty to Resist, in which she makes a case for uncivil disobedience, “Incivility calls civility’s bluff.” And while protests can draw agent provocateurs and opportunistic looters, blaming all violence on outsiders conveniently ignores a more crucial question, as the journalist Masha Gessen notes in an article this week in the New Yorker: “Why would you expect protests against state-sanctioned racist murder to be peaceful?”

You never admitted that a multi-trillion dollar shutdown could have been avoided if Trump had taken responsibility. Taiwan, for one example, didn't have a lazy fool for President doing everything about Covid-19 slow or wrong. Taiwan, therefore, didn't need to shutdown its economy in order to keep the death toll very low.

When you have a fat, ignorant loudmouth like Trump in charge, there will be endless problems that could have been avoided if he had taken responsibility. Instead, he tweeted.

Long list of debunked protest videos and claims IN SOCIAL MEDIA.

selected examples:

Responding to a video suggesting bricks had been deliberately placed to escalate protests, San Francisco police said on Twitter "pallets are affiliated with a construction site and (we) have contacted the contractor to have them removed."

Another viral video from Fayetteville, North Carolina that has racked up over a million views shows a pile of bricks in the vicinity of protests as a man says there is "no construction" site in the area. We've been able to geolocate the video and found images from 24 May with the same pile of bricks in the same place, long before any protests took place.

The dramatic video shows a man being arrested then released by police once they'd checked his ID. The incident took place in June last year, when he was mistaken for a wanted man. The original post of the video on Instagram includes a caption which stated the video was from the year before, and contains no mention of the FBI.

This video claims to show a US police building on fire and was posted on 28 May. It's not only old - it's from 2015 - it was filmed in another country. It shows an explosion in the Chinese city of Tianjin.

There has been violence in such mid-sized/small cities as Rochester NY and Buffalo.

There seems to be a plan to keep the police off-balance by scattering the protests/riots at random, kinda like flashmobs.

The general experience seems to be that the protesters are local but the rioters are not. And the looters are prolly just opportunistic semi-locals ... you have to be close enough to get to where the protests are before the police get there, but I have seen (TV news from the air) looters peel off from a peaceful group of walking protesters to go in and grab stuff, and some literally drive up in cars. Then they scatter like cockroaches when they hear the sirens, drop their loot (if they can't run away fast enuf) and just walk away, acting casual.

LOOTERS ARE NOT PROTESTERS.

If you're going to organize a protest, you have to keep control of the group of people marching with you. Otherwise your protest will be drowned out by provocateurs and looters.

Interestingly, there was a 70% increase in gun sales in April and another 80% increase in sales during May in the US, both compared to numbers last year for those months. It's estimated that as many as 40% of the sales in the last two months are first time gun buyers.

I keep hearing from family about stores being looted and houses being robbed in cities I grew up in and around back in Illinois. All of them less than a 50 mile drive from where I am now.

Meanwhile, I live really close to Gary, IN and do about half of my shopping there and not a peep here. Nobody here is afraid.

Interesting.

I got an email from the White House with the title: "The Lying About Donald Trump is Now Completely Out of Control"

Why did Trump send that out? Because he is nuts and embarrassed:

Trump Now Says He Was Totally “Inspecting” the Bunker, Not Hiding in It

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/06/trump-fox-news-radio-kilme
ade-inspecting-bunker-not-hiding-protest.html

President Donald Trump called into Fox friend Brian Kilmeade’s Fox Radio show Wednesday morning to address reports that the Secret Service rushed him to an underground bunker Friday night as protests swelled outside the White House. Trump was reported to have spent approximately an hour in the secure location, where he was joined by his wife, Melania, and youngest son, Barron. The news that several thousand protesters on Pennsylvania Avenue forced such a retreat put a sizable limp in Trump’s tough guy swagger. To rectify the appearance that he was hiding out, Trump blasted his way through unarmed protesters Tuesday to St. John’s Church. But even that might not have been enough for the historically thin-skinned president. So he had to come up with something, and boy did he:

Trump says he went to the White House bunker for inspection! lol

“It was a false report. I wasn’t down,” Trump said. “I went down during the day, and I was there for a tiny, little short period of time, and it was much more for an inspection. There was no problem during the day.” Kilmeade asked Trump if he was “inspecting” the bunker because the Secret Service expressed concern for his safety? “Nope, they didn’t tell me that at all,” he said. “They said it would be a good time to go down, take a look, because maybe some time you’re going to need it.”

Trump is not brave. He's President Chicken.

The Republicans I know in Texas, going back to the 1960's, have always reacted exactly like you do. They are stressed out; they want a gun; they want police or military protection; they squawk. They act like chickens and The Chicken President. Humorously, the men think they are roosters, but they are fat capons.

SIX: If you live outside of a dozen or two of the largest and worst Democrat ran shitholes here, you're fine.
I'm literally a few miles away from one of the most crime ridden cities in the country historically and there has been no rioting there. Just some peaceful protesting that could have gotten ugly when they decided they were going to try to block the expressway and cops held their ground and used tear gas. The mayor then came out and actually managed to diffuse the situation and nothing is burning to the ground.
We're a conceal and carry state. Any potential criminals here are well aware of that fact and will step down any of their aspirations for the near future accordingly.

SIGNY: There has been violence in such mid-sized/small cities as Rochester NY and Buffalo.
That's one thing about the Gilets Jaunes in France: they were a self-disciplined group whose message was not overtaken by outside actors.

Interesting.

I'm not sure which states are considered Second Amendment states. By map, it looks like this is a county-by-county decision. By map, it looks like about 15 states consider CC to be a constitutional right, about another 26 have "shall issue" (must issue) policies, Hawaii; the CA counties of Imperial, LA, Santa Barbara, SF, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Marin; Delaware, New Jersey, and Long Island county "may issue" but in effect don't, most of the rest of the counties are "may issue" but in effect act as "shall issue".

SOME states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York) do not recognize concealed carry permits from other states.

There was a riot in Indianapolis, which is a concealed carry county? There were riots in Miami and West Palm Beach, and Florida supposedly has very generous gun laws (concealed carry, "stand your ground" and "castle doctrine") so I guess I would have to look into this ... were the targets of the riots and looting the kind you would expect to be protected by homeowners and storekeepers with weapons, or were they more "official" targets" like police HQ and city hall?

But what actually happened is Trump ran like a chicken to shelter.
Quote:

The facts are simply not under dispute. So, why would Trump describe it falsely to Fox?

Simple. There is nothing Trump hates more than weakness. And the image of him cowering in an underground bunker while protesters stood outside the gates of the White House is simply not something he can accept. This is a man who has been telling himself a story of his life -- one in which he is always the toughest, the smartest and the winner-est -- for, well, his entire adult life.

While his image of toughness and strength is deeply warped, it is all he has. It is the building block on which Trump has built a person and a career -- in and out of politics.

It's why he wanted to clear protesters out of Lafayette Park, stroll across H Street and hold up a Bible in front of the historic St. John's Church -- all the while flocked by a phalanx of law enforcement officials. It's why he tells governors that they need to "dominate" the streets against protesters and says things like "I am your President of law and order." And it's why he feels the need to suggest, within the friendly confines of Fox News, that he was really only going down to the bunker to "inspect" it.

He could have gone anytime, of course! It was just a coincidence he was down there amid the protests outside the White House! Just going down to make sure all the buttons worked! All the brass was sufficiently polished! And the like.

I mean, its farcical on its very face. Most people -- presidents or not -- wouldn't be able to pull off saying it with a straight face, knowing how ridiculous it would sound to, well, almost everyone.

Trump is, of course, not most people. Which is a fact that he reminds us of every single day he resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

How the fuck did Democrats get so fucking terrible in 2020 that I'm actually starting to change my mind about martial law? What the fuck are you idiots doing?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Even the Pentagon thinks you and Trump are nuts about martial law:

Pentagon chief breaking with Trump over protest response

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is on shaky ground with the White House after saying Wednesday that he does not support using active duty troops to quell the large-scale protests across the United States triggered by the death of George Floyd and those forces should only be used in a law enforcement role as a last resort.

Speaking from the Pentagon briefing room podium, Esper noted that "we are not in one of those situations now," distancing himself from President Donald Trump's recent threat to deploy the military to enforce order.

"The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act," he told reporters. Esper also distanced himself from a maligned photo-op outside St. John's Church.

Wednesday's press briefing by Esper went over poorly at the White House, where he was already viewed to be on shaky ground, multiple people familiar with the matter said.

Esper's comments Wednesday came after defense officials told CNN this week that there was deep and growing discomfort among some in the Pentagon even before Trump announced Monday that he is ready to deploy active duty forces if local leaders fail to ramp up enforcement efforts.

As tear gas wafted through the air in Lafayette Park across from the White House, Trump announced from the Rose Garden that if state or city leaders refuse "to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents," he will invoke the Insurrection Act, an 1807 law that allows a president to deploy the US military to suppress civil disorder.

Esper and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have faced a flurry of questions and criticism in the wake of Trump's comments, pressure that culminated in Esper's appearance in the Pentagon briefing room Wednesday where he attempted to distance himself from the President's rhetoric.

Republicans defend Esper

Outside the GOP lunch Wednesday, Republican Sen. Mitt Romney said that he hopes the President will listen to Esper's perspective, telling reporters: "I think Secretary Esper has the right to express his point of view, and the President does his, and I hope the President is willing to listen to the perspective of others and take that into account as he makes his decisions."

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, said she is "glad" Esper "made his views" on the Insurrection Act known.

The secretary of defense "needs to be able to express his opinion, which is what he did," she told reporters Wednesday.

Rep. Mac Thornberry, the top Republican on the House Armed Services said it would be appropriate for Esper and chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Mark Milley, to testify before the committee if the President followed through on his threat to invoke the Insurrection Act, a move that Esper made clear on Wednesday he did not believe was necessary at this time.

"I am concerned that in the current environment, it would be all too easy to put our men and women in uniform in the middle of a domestic political and cultural crisis. Discussions regarding the Insurrection Act could easily make them political pawns. The respect, trust, and support our troops have earned from their fellow citizens is the foundation of their strength and we must be careful not to erode that strength," he said in a statement.

The Democratic chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Adam Smith, said, "I have serious concerns about using military forces to respond to protestors. The role of the US military in domestic US law enforcement is limited by law. It must not be used in violation of those limits and I see little evidence that President Trump understands this fundamental premise."

6ix, you have it backwards or upside down. It's Trump who is the weirdo. The Officers are shocked by what an idiot Trump is doing. Military commanders are finally speaking out against Trump.

The first public outburst came on Tuesday, from retired Adm. Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who wrote in the Atlantic, “I have to date been reticent to speak out on issues surrounding President Trump’s leadership, but we are at an inflection point, and the events of the past few weeks have made it impossible to remain silent.”

Mullen wrote, Trump “laid bare his disdain for the rights of peaceful protest in this country, gave succor to the leaders of other countries who take comfort in our domestic strife, and risked further politicizing the men and women of our armed forces.”

Mullen wrote that he was confident that the men and women in uniform “will obey lawful orders. But,” he added, “I am less confident in the orders they will be given by this commander in chief.”

The admiral’s words followed similar commentary, mainly on Twitter, from retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, another former JCS chairman; retired Gen. Michael Hayden, former director of the CIA and NSA; and retired Gen. Tony Thomas, former head of Special Operations Command.

Active-duty officers are also beginning to speak out.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper—a former West Point cadet and Army infantry officer—may have been chastened not just by these statements but also by a letter from James Miller, a former undersecretary of defense, who on Tuesday resigned in protest as a leader of the Defense Science Board since 2014. In his resignation letter, which Miller sent to the Washington Post for publication, he wrote that, by accompanying Trump to St. John’s Church after nearby peaceful protesters were dispersed by tear gas, Esper had violated his oath of office to “support and defend the Constitution.” Miller continued, “Anyone who takes the oath of office must decide where he or she will draw the line. I must now ask: If last night’s blatant violations at the church do not cross the line for you, what will?… I hope this letter of resignation will encourage you to again contemplate the obligations you understood … as well as your obligations to the men and women in our military and other Americans whose lives may be at stake.”

Do Wrong, Be Wrong. :(

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis has kept his thoughts on President Donald Trump largely to himself since he resigned in December 2018. Until Wednesday, that is, when he unloaded on the president in a scathing public statement.

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us.”
— James Mattis

The retired Marine general said he’s “angry and appalled” by what he’s seen this week, as Trump has threatened a military crackdown on protests across the nation.

“The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values — our values as people and our values as a nation,” Mattis said. “Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict — a false conflict — between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part.

“When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens — much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

Mattis said that rather than being a uniter, Trump is actively trying to divide the country.

“We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort,” he said. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

“We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Square. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln’s ‘better angels,’ and listen to them, as we work to unite.”

Former President Jimmy Carter weighed in on the death of George Floyd:

Rosalynn and I are pained by the tragic racial injustices and consequent backlash across our nation in recent weeks. Our hearts are with the victims' families and all who feel hopeless in the face of pervasive racial discrimination and outright cruelty. We all must shine a spotlight on the immorality of racial discrimination. But violence, whether spontaneous or consciously incited, is not a solution.

As a white male of the South, I know all too well the impact of segregation and injustice to African Americans. As a politician, I felt a responsibility to bring equity to my state and our country. In my 1971 inaugural address as Georgia's governor, I said: "The time for racial discrimination is over." With great sorrow and disappointment, I repeat those words today, nearly five decades later. Dehumanizing people debases us all; humanity is beautifully and almost infinitely diverse. The bonds of our common humanity must overcome the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices.

Since leaving the White House in 1981, Rosalynn and I have strived to advance human rights in countries around the world. In this quest, we have seen that silence can be as deadly as violence. People of power, privilege, and moral conscience must stand up and say "no more" to a racially discriminatory police and justice system, immoral economic disparities between whites and blacks, and government actions that undermine our unified democracy. We are responsible for creating a world of peace and equality for ourselves and future generations.

We need a government as good as its people, and we are better than this.

Here are just a few of the long-overdue measures to effectively addressing this crisis:

• Police officers are often described as law enforcement professionals. But professions have standards that govern member conduct, and membership can be revoked for standards violations. Currently, officers fired for misconduct and brutality against innocent civilians can be hired by other departments. We need to establish a national database of officers terminated for misconduct and a decertification system that makes them ineligible to work elsewhere as a police officer.

• Every police killing of an unarmed suspect should be immediately transferred to an independent investigator for review and a special prosecutor for charging. Jurisdictions like New York and Minnesota have policies that allow for special prosecutors in some cases.

• If Floyd had been killed in New York City, we would not have learned about the 18 previous misconduct complaints made against Chauvin, because New York has a highly restrictive law shielding police officers’ misconduct records. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said that he would sign a bill to repeal the law, commonly referred to as 50a, which the state assembly will likely pass this week. Similar laws in other states should also be repealed.

• Police union contracts often contain several provisions that shield officers from accountability for misconduct, such as those protecting officers from questioning for days after an incident, including a killing, and those limiting misconduct-related discipline. Many union contracts also protect officers who witness misconduct by fellow officers from any obligation to report or intervene, perpetuating the “blue wall of silence.” City leaders must expend the political capital necessary to renegotiate provisions that contribute to officer impunity for misconduct.

• Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids federal funding of state and local programs that engage in racial discrimination. Yet, despite providing over $2 billion in grant funding to police jurisdictions around the country, the Department of Justice has never fully enforced this provision. Minneapolis has received nearly $7 million in DOJ grants since 2009. There must be an immediate review of all DOJ grant funding to police departments to ensure compliance with Title VI. Federal funds should be withheld from departments that hire officers previously fired for misconduct or those with suspicious levels of in-custody deaths or assaults. The House and Senate Judiciary Committees have oversight power over the DOJ—and must hold it accountable.

• Qualified immunity, a defense that shields officials from the unforeseeable consequences of their reasonable acts, has been interpreted by courts so expansively that it now provides near- impunity for police officers who engage in unconstitutional acts of violence. Civil rights legal groups, libertarian groups, and even some conservative judges oppose qualified immunity in its current form. The U.S. Supreme Court has several cert petitions pending before it right now requesting review of this judge-made doctrine—one that must be urgently fixed by the courts. But, Congress can also act to limit this defense.

• In Birmingham, Alabama the 115-year-old Confederate Soldiers and Sailors monument was removed from its pedestal on Monday night

• In Birmingham, Alabama a crowd of protesters tore down a statue of Confederate Navy captain Charles Linn last week

• In Montgomery, Alabama a statue of General Robert E Lee, the Commander of the Confederate Army in the Civil War, was toppled on Monday

Seriously, they are not my goons. If Trump murders them all, on TV, that will increase his charm with a certain kind of deranged voter. Trump will be giving his kind of people what they want. Maybe Trump will win reelection by a landslide bigger than any in history because he showed them the meanest, cruelest American President the world has ever seen!

Despite the fact that the M$M is doing it's best to "explain" why looting and rioting is justified, a LARGE MAJORITY of Americans approve of using the National Guard to quell looting and rioting.

As usual, SECOND, you blame everything on Trump, and yet the data shows that police killed just as many black people under Obama as they did under Trump.

There was some dumb black bimbo holding a signTHIS IS FOR THE LAST 400 YEARS

Really????

Huh, that's funny because I wasn't around 400 years ago, and neither was she. I'm not about to be guilt-tripped about something neither I, or my family, nor anyone alive today had anything to do with. You can protest modern-day discrimination (yes, it still exists), but to carry a grievance about something that old and musty and pointless is just stupid.

Anyway, I think this whole black/white thing is something of a sideshow. If people want to protest the REAL lack of equity, how about the difference between the 0,01% and ... well... "everybody else"? If you're going to be pissed off at something, why not be pissed off at today's cluster-fucked economy, and why not protest at The Fed's regional headquarters, and at the headquarters of every bank, and at Langley and the Pentagon?

It's easy to beat "white people" over the head for something that they may or may not have done, or may or may not have supported (especially with the media behind your cause) but protesting the REAL sources of power apparently takes too much huevos for these protesters.

And looting is just looting. Yeah, I know ... nobody ever got rich by working hard. You can't even make a decent living by working hard. And the ultra rich got rich by looting and pillaging our entire economy (thru rentier capitalism) not just the local Walgreens, and greed and thievery is handsomely rewarded here in this good ole USofA if you do it on a YUGE scale, but if you want to change the system you have to change the laws.

I guess that, it's just too much trouble to think about.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

And my god how people seem to be SO susceptible to cosmetic pandering! "We hear ya'!" If not one more cop killed not one more person of color ... OK, let me take this all the way to its conclusion ... if discrimination were to completely disappear tomorrow ... there STILL wouldn't be enough good jobs for everybody. The awful housing would still exist. The obscenely rich would still be obscenely rich. And the vast, vast majority of people who have to work for a living would still be getting screwed. There is nothing 'fair' about this system, even if every secret stain of bias was to be made snowy clean tomorrow.

We Crunched the Numbers: Police — Not Protesters — Are Overwhelmingly Responsible for Attacking Journalists

https://theintercept.com/2020/06/04/journalists-attacked-police-george
-floyd-protests
/

We are witnessing a truly unprecedented attack on press freedom in the United States, with journalists are being systematically targeted while covering the nationwide protests over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.

The scale of the attacks is so large, it can be hard to fathom. At the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, a project of Freedom of the Press Foundation and the Committee to Protect Journalists, we catalogued 150 press freedom violations in the United States in all of 2019. We are currently investigating 280 from just the last week.

The crisis has rightly generated international outrage. Some have pushed a narrative — fueled by commonly used phrases like “journalists are being attacked by police and protesters alike” — that police and protesters are attacking journalists at relatively equal rates.

Our data shows this is incorrect. Police are responsible for the vast majority of assaults on journalists: over 80 percent.

There was nothing fair about chattel slavery, but it worked fine for slave-owners until the 13th amendment ended it, at least until an alternative to chattel slavery was devised. In the alternative system, which looks like slaves being poorly paid and having permission to pick their masters and slave-drivers, the cotton pickers were still black, but now white cotton pickers could also be cruelly mistreated. That alternative did not go away, even after farming needed less labor. Instead, it moved to factories and mines and construction and even clerking. The 16th amendment on taxes took aim at the rich business owners in this alternative system, and the amendment worked for awhile, but the rich found a crooked way around that amendment, too, as they did with the 13th. The marginal tax rate has gone from 94% in 1945 to 91% in 1963 to 0% for Trump, as an example, but he is not the only rich person paying almost no income taxes. I’m one, for example, and I didn’t cheat, unlike Trump. I only used the unfair Republican tax code changes from 2017.

And we would still have thousands of H-bombs, too! But we don't need those H-bombs and yet Trump is cancelling every nuclear weapon treaty and spending $500 billion on more bombs. All those other problems you list could also be handled, except they cannot when Republicans in the Federal-level Senate or in state-level senates won't let the problems be solved. It is like the difference between Herbert Hoover and FDR. One of them never saw a problem that didn't have a solution. The other never had solutions. But aren't you the one who can't understand the tremendous psychological difference between Hoover and FDR? Or Eisenhower and LBJ? Or D's and R's?
