It will be on Biden's desk a month too late for 18 million unemployed Americans.

Conduct that poll again once 18 million Americans don't get their unemployment check next week because Congress didn't act in time and had something more important to do.

Be sure you tell them about how federal employees get $1,400 per week for up to $21,000 too while they couldn't get a $100 boost in their current benefits.

lol

That's not a countdown you should be looking forward to.

By election day, nobody is going to remember the 1.9 Trillion. The stimmy checks will be spent by the end of March, and unemployment runs out for 18 million Americans more than a year before the election.

Meanwhile, a nearly unchecked "progressive" agenda is going to backfire, and power will shift in the mid-terms just as it almost always does.

What a dumb article.

2 months and a day after inauguration, Biden still hasn't done a solo press conference. If this keeps up, his will be the least transparent administration since Howdy Doody.

They're also trying REALLY hard to keep a media blackout about the border.

THIS is a problem:

That's a nice blanket though. I bought one at a Tom Petty concert back in the late 90's and I still use it all the time today. Exact same color and pattern too. Insanely well made for the price I paid for it.

ETA: Seems Google isn't going to provide this time, but that blanket makes an appearance in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie too. It's not in the movie long, but it is used as a throw cover on the seats in one of their cars.

I always get a kick when I see that blanket pop up over the years. There are no tags on it, but I'm assuming that it was made in China or whichever 3rd world country we were exploiting for cheap labor at the time of production.

It would be pretty funny if mine actually was made in Mexico in the late 90s, but the ones that the Mexicans pictured trying to illegally cross the border got theirs made in China in 2021.

Exclusive photos from inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporary overflow facility in Donna, Texas, reveal the crowded, makeshift conditions at the border as the government's longer-term child shelters and family detention centers fill up.

Why it matters: Each of eight "pods" in the so-called soft-sided facility has a 260-person occupancy, said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), who provided the photos to Axios to raise awareness about the situation. But as of Sunday, he said, one pod held more than 400 unaccompanied male minors.

Because the Biden administration has restricted media coverage at housing facilities, images like these offer a rare window into conditions.
Cuellar, who recently visited a shelter for children, did not tour the Donna facility or take the photos himself. He said the photos were taken over the weekend.

What they're saying: Cuellar described the setting as "terrible conditions for the children" and said they need to be moved more rapidly into the care of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Border Patrol agents are "doing the best they can under the circumstances" but are "not equipped to care for kids" and "need help from the administration," he said.
"We have to stop kids and families from making the dangerous trek across Mexico to come to the United States. We have to work with Mexico and Central American countries to have them apply for asylum in their countries."

“I have said repeatedly from the very outset a Border Patrol station is no place for a child," DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told CNN on Sunday. "That is why we are working around the clock to move these children out of the Border Patrol facilities into the care and custody of the Department of Health and Human Services that shelters them.”

On MSNBC, he compared the administration's actions to those of the Trump administration,"We are not expelling children, girls, 5, 7, 9 years old back into the desert of Mexico, back into the hands of traffickers.”

The bottom line: Facilities are at capacity under coronavirus protocols, and the Rio Grande Valley sector — which includes Donna — has far exceeded even its non-pandemic limits.

As of Saturday, there were 10,000 migrants in CBP custody overall. Nearly half were unaccompanied minors — thousands of whom had been waiting for more than 3 days in border patrol facilities, according to government data provided to Axios by another source.

Yanno, we can't even house our own homeless, heal our own sick, educate our own inner city youth, and provide jobs for the jobless. What makes anyone think we should take in a million more?

But the Dems attitude seems to be that if you jump the border you're entitled to food and water, shelter, and medical care. We treat them better than we treat our own citizens.

How about this?: If we don't fuck up their countries in the first place, then we have no moral responsibility to provide a safety valve for their own governments. So let's leave them alone ... no sanctions, no "interventions", no political cover for authoritarian governments, and require them to solve their own problems.

It would cost about $20 billion per year for the government to effectively eliminate homelessness in the United States, a Housing and Urban Development official told the New York Times on Monday. That’s just slightly less money than Americans spend on Christmas decorations, according to an analysis from ThinkProgress. Nearly 634,000 people were homeless last year, according to HUD.

On average, refugees who arrived before they turned 14 finished high school and went to college at the same rates as their native-born peers. As for those who come to the US as refugees as adults, most struggled with low employment rates and reliance on government assistance at first. But in only six years in their new country, the same group of refugees surpassed native-born Americans it came to employment and their reliance on welfare or food stamps. According to this study, refugees aren't quite the drain on society that some lawmakers have painted them to be.

Study finds refugees actually pay the US government thousands more than they get from it

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

If you look at NZ's immigration laws, or Australia's immigration laws, or even Canada's immigration laws, they're EXTREMELY tough on would-be immigrants. A US citizen would be extremely lucky to find a place in any of those countries, no matter how long they were willing to wait.

And while NZ and Australia don't have to deal with hoards of border-jumpers - being islands with many days worth of sea-crossing to even get there - Canada doesn't mind shutting its doors entirely. You go to Canada illegally and get caught? You get sent back to your last known country of residence, no questions asked - unless you go to jail first AND/OR get hit with a heavy fine. You are completely at the mercy of whoever you appear before, and whether they've had a good night's sleep or are grumpy for some reason. You get no second chances, no alternate choices. AND you lose ALL hope of immigrating legally into Canada, ever again.

Why people think the US should be different from their own country is a mystery to me.

In the meantime, let's divert briefly to 'skilled' immigrants. They're allowed in for one reason - to pressure high-paid wages down (along with H-1b visa holders). They don't help anyone except the businesses who want to get more for less. And American workers who aren't willing to work for peanuts are left without jobs.

Now, back to those border-jumpers. For some strange reason the US provides better care and services for them than it does for its own citizens. They get free medical exams, free medical treatment, free legal advice ... IF they come through the system, they get put on a roster of asylum claims to be considered, and then they're allowed to disappear into the woodwork, never to be seen again.

And whether they come through the system OR are totally undocumented, once in the US they get free public schools through HS, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, treatment at county hospitals, and so on.

Living in an illegal-immigrant heavy area of the country, I can tell you a many have no intention of assimilating. They have no loyalty to the citizens they live among, to the laws, or the country. They're here to game the system and get as much as they can get.

Why we should allow border-jumpers in, and allow them to stay, is beyond me. It certainly doesn't benefit us citizens who have every legal claim and moral expectation that our government should be looking out for us, its citizens, first, before any other consideration.

Now you're whining that the rich don't pay high wages to the people on the bottom 50% of the economic ladder. If you want Ebenezer Scrooge to pay more, you could deport most of his labor force made up of illegal Bob Cratchits, or you could have the government (the Ghost of Christmas Future) scare Scrooge into paying more. Making rich Scrooges fearful will work instantaneously, without shrinking the economy by getting rid of the poor Cratchits and Tiny Tims on crutches. Scrooge can pay more thanks to the heavily skewed wealth distribution, but he doesn't feel like paying more.

Half of the good jobs are already shipped out of the country, with more going that way all the time.

And half the US citizens on the bottom are left fighting illegal immigrants who don't belong here in the first place for the shitty jobs that they can't ship overseas.

I'd have to go dig it back out but elsewhere I posted the government figures, which were percentage slices for ALL annual wages. Of course the government reports out mean and median. But using its own figures, the MODE of annual US wages is less than $1000 per year. No wonder they don't report that.

6ix, you seem to be under the impression that poor people own their jobs, not the rich people who pay the poor. Since the poor own almost nothing, nothing is how much say they have in who will do the job and where. On the other hand, the government (or even unions) can scare the living hell out of rich people, making the rich jump and do tricks or else lose their wealth. That is very obvious to the wealthy, who have taken steps so that is unlikely to happen. As for the poor, they have taken no steps and have no understanding about what the hell is happening and are extremely unlikely to ever expend energy or take intelligent risks to change things, which is exactly why they are poor in the first place.

Fortunately, we still have a nominal democracy. The question is, will people use their vote-power?

No poor person even needs to take any risk at all. Al they need to do is vote for people who will represent them. And the vote will have power at least until the vote loses its anonymity and guards with machine guns enforce who will vote and who will be voted for.

Democracy smells like ... freedom.

GDP figures are meaningless to the average person because of its heavily skewed distribution.

SECONDRATE: Now you're whining that the rich don't pay high wages to the people on the bottom 50% of the economic ladder.

I'm complaining that the wealthy import cheap illegal labor that they can exploit.

It's clear to anyone who's been scanning your posts for any length of time that you love illegals. For some reason, you have allegiance to people from other nations, but you hate Americans.

Were your parents border jumpers? I can't account for your hatred of America, and Americans, any other way. If so, you would be a prime example of why border jumpers should not be allowed to reside here.

Fortunately, we still have a nominal democracy. The question is, will people use their vote-power?
Quote:

On the other hand, the government (or even unions) can scare the living hell out of rich people, making the rich jump and do tricks or else lose their wealth. That is very obvious to the wealthy, who have taken steps so that is unlikely to happen.
Up until Trump, that is.
Quote:

As for the poor, they have taken no steps and have no understanding about what the hell is happening and are extremely unlikely to ever expend energy or take intelligent risks to change things, which is exactly why they are poor in the first place.
No poor person even needs to take any risk at all. Al they need to do is vote for people who will represent them. And the vote will have power at least until the vote loses its anonymity and guards with machine guns enforce who will vote and who will be voted for.

Democracy smells like ... freedom.

If you had started at the bottom of the economic ladder, like I did, and rose to top rung (that is me, again) you won't be writing bromides about how to raise the living standards of the bottom 50%. For now the American government will only move things like the minimum wage upwards a tiny bit because almost nobody who earns in the region of the minimum wage will act unfailingly sensible about it. The poor won't confront their boss for a raise because of fear of being fired. The poor won't join a union to confront the boss because they fear union bosses. The poor won't vote out a politician who doesn't support $15/hour.

Democracy does not work well when half the voters are paralyzed with fear of real world confrontation (not just confrontations that go on in secret ballots cast once every four years) and are obviously chickens: fearful of their bosses and the rich and running around in circles squawking endlessly, accomplishing nothing more than watching a great deal of TV and posting on fff.net.

I've noticed at work that when given a new task, Trumptards' minds go blank unless the task is similar to what they are familiar with, while Libtards understand after being told once. Why are Trumptards like that? It is not a mystery, but a Trumptard cannot be enlightened and cannot accept warnings to avoid the dead end paths their minds habitually follow. So sad for them and so annoying for their co-workers who take up the slack left by the Trumptards.

Oh, SECONDRATE has flat-out posted that he hates Americans, more than once. Haven't you noticed?

And he ALWAYS defends illegal aliens* over American citizens. They work harder, produce more money (for him), are more honest (except, of course, when then jump the border) and are more deserving in every way than Americans, who are lazy, stupid, entitled, dishonest, and must be fired because he doesn't like them and their opinions. At least. according to SECONDRATE.

*BTW, "illegal aliens" is a legal term, not a pejorative one. "Refugee" is ALSO a legal term with a specific meaning. I just love how SECONDRATE tried to present one as the other.
Thanks for lying, SECONDRATE! It's nice to know there are some things we can always count on!

I have noticed that Signym has written that many times, but Sig didn't get that from me, unless Sig thinks Trumptards are the only real Americans. Trumptards, at least in Texas, are gullible fools. I've always had disdain for fools going back to the Vietnam War where I was the fool for volunteering. There is reason to believe, looking at the entire nation, that all Trumptards are as easily fooled as they are in Texas:

Some Republican voters said their party supported policies like expanding Medicaid, which it has opposed. Winter notes that this dynamic has been around for some time:

This is a long-running trend, of voters, especially Republican voters, denying the extremism of the positions that the party holds on questions of political economy. Matthew Yglesias, formerly of Vox, terms this phenomenon “the politics of incredulity.” For him, such voters are a major reason why these conditions persist. He argues “voters find [the Republican Party’s position on economic issues] so outlandishly bad that they’ll only believe someone espouses them if you can convince them first that the person in question is a heartless monster.”

For Republican voters in particular, Yglesias adds: “Consequently, people who align with Republicans on broad values themes — whether opposition to abortion rights, love of guns, patriotism, or panic at the thought of a diversifying country — find it simply not credible that their champions are actually running on a politically toxic agenda that would clearly lose elections.”

I feel like trolling the Trumptards. Biden is positively for gun control. All the Trumptards I know are positively against. The Onion has remarks:

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

BOULDER, CO — In the hours following a violent rampage in Colorado in which a lone attacker killed 10 individuals and injured several others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Monday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place. “This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said Kansas resident Andrew Thompson, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. “It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this individual from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what they really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past eight years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

For every rich person there are 99 poor people. Or, maybe a better way is to explain is that for every 2,000,000 rich there are 198,000,000 poor. BUT THE POOR REFUSE TO ACT TOGETHER, EVEN THOUGH THEY VASTLY OUTNUMBER THE RICH. Obviously the rich understand how to signal to one another what is best for themselves. And the rich know how to form alliances to protect their wealth. The poor haven't even started to master either skill, most likely because a poor person who understands the skills uses what he knows to join the rich while the rest of the poor are satisfied by watching a lot of TV and playing on their phones.

SLOPPY still seems to think that Republicans aren't Americans.

Also, he despises poor and working Americans as well.

At times, he's extended his hatred to "Americans" in general, such as "Americans want war but don't know how to win one" or "Americans are racist".

Can Joe Biden Pass Anything More This Year? by Kevin Drum
March 23, 2021 – 12:11 pm

As far as I know, the following two things are true:

1) Democrats don't have the votes to break a Republican filibuster.
2) Democrats don't have the votes to eliminate the filibuster.

Biden has zero chance of passing a huge spending bill that includes huge tax increases. He has zero chance of passing a huge new voting law. He has zero chance of passing anything. And yet the conversation surrounding these bills continues to have a sort of fairy-land tone that, hey, maybe Biden can negotiate with good-for-nothing Republicans to get some of this stuff passed.

If Biden* gets nothing else gets passed, it means democracy is working. And that's a good thing. Nothing SHOULD get passed based on 50% of the people.

And by the numbers, the US population is divided about 50/50. The Senate is divided 50/50. The House is divided about 50/50.

Stalemate is a fair democratic outcome here.
