Take a lesson from history:

Look at the Spanish Inquisition: torture, murder, all in the name of God.

Or Libya: A functioning nation with a high living standard, turned into an open air slave market all in the name of freedom.

The riot was not an attempted "coup" no matter how much you try and spin it. In order for a coup to be successful, you need to take over the main media and communication centers, plus you need the military and police on your side.

Trump did not incite a riot, no matter how hard you try to spin THAT.

Trump supporters in Congress should not be purged, (like they used to do in Stalinist Russia) because they were duly elected representatives, no matter how much you disagree with them and the people who voted for them.

Trump should not be impeached, and Nancy Pelosi frothing about "nuclear codes" should be seen for what it is: An attempt to lie and bully Trump out of office ahead of time on a wave of deliberately invoked hysteria.

Nonetheless, I view the rioters about the same way that I view previous DC rioters, like those who stormed the Supreme Court doors or set fire the St Mark's church: they should be tried and convicted with equal levels of punishment, depending on the severity of the crime committed.
