September 1st in Canada has been declared a day of remembrance for the survivors of the residential school system in Canada. Two former schools have been declared heritage sites. These were chosen after 2 Indigenous communities came forward. The first site is in Portage la Prairie Manitoba and the other is in Shubenacadie Nova Scotia.

What does it mean to be a survivor of a residential school, Brenda?

My definition of a survivor is a person who has managed to have a career or a good job and raise a family. Who hopefully managed to avoid the pitfalls of substance abuse as well.

Now, everyone who you could talk to about this subject in Canada and the US is going to look at it differently. We're talking about generations of abuse and cultural destruction.

Oh... Well... Not really a lot of survivors here in the good ol USA either.

We're still teaching all of our kids to be mentally retarded in 2020's global economy by refusing to teach the Metric System.

US schools aren't made for any other purpose than to churn out worker bees.

That is why I recommend that the people of Puerto Rico do not allow themselves to be suckered into becoming the 51st state with the temptation of more Government money.

In a generation they will lose their culture and it won't be long until Disney San Juan opens up.

I will try to answer the question about Residential Schools, although my answer will surely be incomplete, and hopefully not too wrong.

Brenda has mentioned or discussed in at least 2 threads about residential schools. The most recent here:
http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=2&tid=63700

I think they were in both USA (or territories) and Canada. They were either a government operation, or a Church operation, not sure if they were Catholic or other Christian Denomination.
One motto attributed to the organizers/perpetrators is something like "remove/beat out the Indian to save the Man." This likely meant something like they thought the Indians were savages, uncivilized, and they hoped that there were "useful" men and women beneath the surface, but they needed to eliminate the surface Indian/native persona to reveal that underlying gem. Unfortunately, this seems to have meant that all of the culture, customs, livelihood of the tribal way of life was scraped away. The children were taken away from their families, perhaps forcibly much of the time. The children were not very willing, and much violence was applied to the victims, beyond corporal punishment.

What you are talking about is a choice that the Puerto Rican people can make.

Residential schools in the US and Canada were NOT a choice. These places were forced onto my ancestors and the Indigenous people in Canada.

JSF, the schools were in the US and Canada. I have talked about my own grandmother and her brother and sisters being raised in one in Montana.

Shitty doesn't begin to cover what was done to peoples like the Haida, Dene, Inuit, Metis, Tlingit, Cree, Mohawk, Oneida, Iroquois. Just to name a few from Canada.

Shitty doesn't begin to cover what was done to peoples like Pullayup, Shoshoni, Mandan, Hidasta, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Omaha, Apache, Dakota, Seminole, Cherokee. These are names from the US.

Shitty is what I'd use to describe all the shitty things that have happened to anyone in history.

I'm not sure what you're looking from here from me, personally, Brenda.

I'm not going to be emotionally manipulated into apologizing to you or anybody else about it, so I do hope that's not what you're looking for. I had no part in it.

I also love my country, and I'm not going to be emotionally manipulated into not loving my country either.

I'm sorry that shitty things happen to people. I'm sorry that the more people try to pretend that things have changed, they're pretty much exactly the same today and shitty things will continue to happen to people.

I mean, Apple literally has to put up nets surrounding the buildings where everyone's iPhones are made in China to catch people who try to jump and kill themselves. Meanwhile, everyone here in the West pretends they give a shit about global warming but they continue to buy all the cheap Chinese made shit that is creating just as much pollution and global warming as it ever did, but they can pretend it's not happening anymore because it's not their streets that are so perpetually polluted that you can't see more than 4 feet in front of your face.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

No, Jack. I don't want an apology from you or for you to stop loving your country.

I guess what I want and would be better to get from your government officials is an formal acknowledgement that the same system that happened in Canada happened in the US. And it destroyed cultures and lives.

You've told me yourself in another thread that until I brought up the subject, you didn't know what it was.

I know things haven't changed. Hollywood and the Oscars has only got bullied into changing criteria for best picture catergory.

About 215 bodies of children were located in an unmarked mass grave in/at Kamloops. These are believed to be from Residential Schools.

If somebody wants to post a linky to the story, that would be great.

The bodies were found on the grounds of that particular school. There were over 10 such schools that ran in BC.

Are the other sites also being checked for mass graves?

Were these all different nations/tribes, or were they primarily one nation at Kamloops?

Vancouver Island had 5 such schools and a member of one of the tribes there started a "Go Fund Me" page to raise money for ground penetrating radar equipment to see if there are any graves.

At Kamloops the bodies would be from the Kamloops First Nations and Nations in that area.

International Criminal Court called on to investigate Kamloops residential school findings

More than a dozen lawyers from across Canada have formally requested the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigate the Canadian government and the Vatican for crimes against humanity following preliminary reports that the remains of an estimated 215 children were discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Fifteen lawyers, headed by Calgary counsel, have made the request to the ICC's chief prosecutor Karim Khan.

If it happens, the investigation could lead to the prosecution of "employees, agents and actors" of the Catholic Church and Government of Canada who were involved in either the creation and/or coverup of the burial grounds, said Calgary lawyer Brendan Miller.

"We don't know the names of these children. They were intended to be erased," Miller said.

"It has taken this event to shame people into action — the time for gestures is over."

Crimes against humanity

The ICC, which prosecutes cases only when countries are unwilling or unable to do so, has the power to compel involved parties to disclose all documents and information related to the investigation.

The lawyers say the deaths, graves and treatment of children who were under government and church care is evidence of crimes against humanity and they want the ICC to "do whatever it takes to unearth the facts."

Located in The Hague, the ICC has jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute four types of crimes — one of which being crimes against humanity — which are "serious violations committed as part of a large-scale attack against any civilian population."

Included in the 15 types of crimes against humanity are murder, rape, imprisonment, enforced disappearances and enslavement – particularly of women and children.

1 in 50 children died at school

The Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation said last Thursday that preliminary findings from a survey of the grounds conducted by a 'specialist in ground-penetrating radar' indicated the remains of an estimated 215 children were on site.

The Truth and Reconcilliation Commission (TRC) previously recorded and published the names of more than 60 children who died at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, but Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc Kukpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir has said the remains are "undocumented deaths."

More than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were placed in residential schools between the 1870s and 1990s.

At least 4,100 students — more than one in 50 — died while attending such schools. The TRC estimates the actual number could be 6,000 or higher.

'An obligation not felt'

The TRC released 94 calls to action six years ago, making six recommendations specific to missing children and burial grounds at residential schools including that the Government of Canada and the Vatican assist in uncovering the details.

"Thus far, neither the federal government nor the Vatican has taken the actions required to respond to these expectations," reads a statement sent on behalf of the coalition of lawyers.

The group has invited other lawyers across the country to endorse the application to the ICC.

"An obligation not felt is not an obligation," wrote Donna Kennedy-Glans, a former member of Alberta's Legislative Assembly who now works as a lawyer in Indigenous communities across the province.

'Justice … must be seen to be done'

Former Alberta justice minister Jonathan Denis said there's a need for an independent investigation, "with a view to the public's confidence in the justice system."

"It is often said that justice must not only be done, but also must be seen to be done," Denis said.

At one time the Kamloops Indian Residential School, which operated from 1890 to 1978, was the largest of its kind in Canada.

Although the Rome Statute — the court's founding treaty — only gives the ICC jurisdiction to investigate crimes which took place on or after 2002, ongoing coverup beyond that date could make the Kamloops discovery eligible for investigation.

If the ICC agrees to look into the matter, it would first conduct a preliminary examination before an investigation would take place.

According to the ICC's website, the Office of the Prosecutor would have to determine there is "sufficient evidence of crimes of sufficient gravity falling within the ICC's jurisdiction, whether there are genuine national proceedings, and whether opening an investigation would serve the interests of justice and of the victims."

I didn't catch if this was an actual mass grave, or many individual graves, or several mass graves. Have not seen details of cause of deaths. If all together, maybe a bad illness or disease swept the area. Or, eveidence of violence.

Neither should be excused, but the details should not be hidden.

And other sites are waiting for ground penetrating RADAR to look. I keep seeing this equipment used at archeological sites on TV all the time, like from universities. What on earth could be the hold-up?

They haven't said if it is a mass site or individual burials. The site hasn't been excavated yet. Some maybe illness, some maybe malnutrition and some abuse.

This has just been started and as I stated it will be a long process.

For the love of God, JSF. Use your brain. This was standard practice across Canada and any investigation into this is going to take time. Any charges that can be filed some will have to be filed postumastly as the perpatrators are long dead.

Trudeau has tried at least twice with this new pope to get the Catholic church to admit what it did over here but the pope won't discuss it.

Various Bishops in BC have apologized for what was done and maybe some across Canada.

And by the way welcome to world of systemic racism in Canada.

Oh, by the way have a look at my other post. The USA is NOT innocent in this area.

I'm glad that I could show you something about the US's history towards my ancestors.

That list included 2 schools in Montana

Fort Shaw Indian School

Bond's Mission School or Montana Industrial School for Indians run by Unitarians, Crow Indian Reservation near Custer Station Montana 1886-97.

My grandmother and her siblings could have been placed in either one.

I wonder if this story would be as big today if not for that episode of FBI: MW from last year.

Or even if that ground penetrating RADAR would have become available.

First Nations people across Canada have spoken of graves and the abuse suffered by children at these schools. The survivors have told all levels of government for years.

It's a big story as the ground penetrating RADAR has now provided the physical evidence to what the communities have been saying.

I was just reminded of your OP for this thread.
Where Canada officially recognized the problem.
I don't know whether that had greater impact, of the America TV show on the subject, or a combination of the 2. And I don't know which came first.
Clearly, for generations peoples have been reporting about it, it was started more than 100 years ago.

But this news has suddenly happened now. Ground penetrating RADAR is not a new invention. I was wondering what was the sudden catalyst.

Ottawa started a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2008 as part of the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement.

So after the report was delivered in around September of 2012, Ottawa officially began trying to fill its obligations as set out in the report.

Apparently work was being done on the Kamloops Residential School site when the initial discovery was made by the Nation's Language and Culture Department of the Kamloops First Nation. They had funding from a provincial program called Pathway to Healing.

This process has been going on for a decade now and had nothing to do with an American tv show. IF anything the tv show probably picked the idea up from the 2 Cree actors.

JSF understand though First Nations, Inuit and Metis are more visible in Canada, they have still been ignored.

And this applies to the US as well.

Conservative politicians in Canada are as big of idiots as they are in the US.

The resolution may go through at some point. Just have to see.

Rebel media which mainstream media people normally label as 'biased' but its alt media based in Canada, They show a media photo and I actually find the pix of kids shoes laid next to sites cvery disturbing, the Rebel media say they are unsure if this is a crime scene mass grave site or perhaps an unmarked grave site from conditions that happened to be brutally cruel and linked to the admin / authority over a longer period of time, they mention living conditions, maybe accidents took place or there was a lack of medical supplies, the Rebel media they accuse the Canadian government of playing politics.

I was reading that, regardless of cause of death, the administrators of these schools (read: bureaucrat) as late as 1942 did not think there was any requirement to notify or report any death of these children. So they might have been simple deaths from illness.
But they still should have been returned to family or tribe for burial or ritual.
Bureaucracy always allows humans to be separated from their humanity.

It will take exhuming the site and carefully examining the remains to see what happened.

Read the Churches who ran these places didn't really care what happened to the children. They were being paid by the Feds and that is all that mattered.

Jayneztown, if you would bother to look at regular media outlets in Canada they have all showed pictures from residential schools and film footage as well. They have covered all the places the children's shoes have been placed on residential school grounds and all drumming and healing circles that have happened since the discovery.

They have spoken to survivors and gotten their stories.

And the shoes are meant to be disturbing to non-Indigenous Canadians and for First Nations to remember.

I have cried for all the children that were lost because of these places and I have cried for my own family and the children who were lost in the US.

I thought I heard local Indians mention that they did that in America, starting in recent years. Do you know if that is true?
Or is it different than what Canada will do? I don't know the details.

What I am was talking about is that instead of an Anglo name being used on a passport for travel to Europe or anywhere outside of North America, a person from say the Cree nation as an example can now put their Cree given name on their passport.

Canadian and American Indians can move fairly freely across the border between Canada and the US as long as you have documents like a Status card from Canada or Identification card from the US stating what tribe you are from and state and such in the US.

For someone who is mixed blood meaning half-Indian/ half-white you need papers signed from your family, from your tribe proving you are on the rolls and also listing how much Indian blood you have.

I couldn't find anything about names on passports for outside North America for the US, so I would guess that Native Americans must use European names on US passports.
