Webb space telescope nearing destination a million miles away

Thirty days outbound from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope will slip into its parking orbit nearly a million miles away on Monday, an ideal spot to scan the heavens in search of faint infrared light from the first generation of stars and galaxies.

But getting there — and successfully deploying a giant sunshade, mirrors and other appendages along the way — was just half the fun.

Scientists and engineers now have to turn the $10 billion Webb into a functioning telescope, precisely aligning its 18 primary mirror segments so they work together as a single 21.3-foot-wide mirror, by far the largest ever launched

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The world’s biggest, most powerful space telescope arrived at its observation post 1 million miles from Earth on Monday, a month after it lifted off on a quest to behold the dawn of the universe.

On command, the James Webb Space Telescope fired its rocket thrusters for nearly five minutes to go into orbit around the sun at its designated location, and NASA confirmed the operation went as planned.

The mirrors on the $10 billion observatory still must be meticulously aligned, the infrared detectors sufficiently chilled and the scientific instruments calibrated before observations can begin in June.

But flight controllers in Baltimore were euphoric after chalking up another success.

"We’re one step closer to uncovering the mysteries of the universe. And I can’t wait to see Webb’s first new views of the universe this summer!” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement.

The telescope will enable astronomers to peer back further in time than ever before, all the way back to when the first stars and galaxies were forming 13.7 billion years ago. That's a mere 100 million years from the Big Bang, when the universe was created.

Besides making stellar observations, Webb will scan the atmospheres of alien worlds for possible signs of life.

“Webb is officially on station," said Keith Parrish, a manager on the project. “This is just capping off just a remarkable 30 days."

NASA Is Going to Plunge the International Space Station Into the Pacific Ocean

The International Space Station is being retired in 2030, after spending more than 30 years orbiting Earth. At the end of its service, NASA will crash the ISS into the Pacific Ocean in January 2031. Don’t worry, though; they are sending the station, which is roughly the size of a football field, to a very remote part of the ocean.

According to plans released by NASA, the ISS will be sunk into Point Nemo, a region in the South Pacific Ocean, also known as the South Pacific Oceanic Uninhabited Area. Point Nemo is a part of the ocean farthest from any land and has been used to crash other spacecraft. According to CNN, a total of 263 pieces of space debris have been sunk into Point Nemo since 1971.

Since its launch in 1998, more than 200 astronauts from 19 countries have been aboard the ISS. In the next eight years, before the hub is brought down, NASA plans on continuing to conduct big missions on the station.

“The International Space Station is entering its third and most productive decade as a groundbreaking scientific platform in microgravity,” said Robyn Gatens, director of the International Space Station at NASA Headquarters, in a press release. “This third decade is one of results, building on our successful global partnership to verify exploration and human research technologies to support deep space exploration, continue to return medical and environmental benefits to humanity, and lay the groundwork for a commercial future in low-Earth orbit.”

After the ISS is retired, NASA plans on partnering with private companies to create space stations, which will serve both private-sector space missions and government-run missions.

For us down on Earth, we should definitely try avoiding Point Nemo in early 2031, I suppose.

Mega Comet Arriving From the Oort Cloud Is 85 Miles Wide

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein is currently inbound from the Oort Cloud, a distant region of the solar system known for packing billions and possibly trillions of icy objects. The comet will make its closest approach to Earth in 2031, when it will come to within 11 au of the Sun (1 billion miles), in which 1 au is the average distance from Earth to the Sun. The comet, coming no closer than Saturn, won’t likely be visible to the unaided eye, but astronomers will be keeping a close watch, as it’s turning out to be a rather extraordinary object.

Since his appointment in 2009, Martin has tracked NASA's development of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft.

Martin said that the operational costs alone for a single Artemis launch—for just the rocket, Orion spacecraft, and ground systems—will total $4.1 billion. This is, he said, "a price tag that strikes us as unsustainable." With this comment, Martin essentially threw down his gauntlet and said NASA cannot have a meaningful exploration program based around SLS and Orion at this cost.

What is striking about these costs is that they do not include the tens of billions of dollars that NASA has already spent developing the Orion spacecraft since 2005 and the Space Launch System rocket since 2011. If one were to amortize development costs over 10 flights of the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, the $4.1 billion figure cited by Martin would easily double.

That figure is far higher than NASA might have hoped. Five years ago, a senior NASA official told Ars that the space agency would like to get its operational costs for a single mission a year down to $2 billion or less. Another source at the time said the internal goal was $1.5 billion.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/03/nasa-inspector-general-says-sl
s-costs-are-unsustainable

What you get for $4.1 billion (or $8.2 billion if development cost included):

Why are Most Meteorites Found in Antarctica?

What is a Meteorite?

Meteorites fall all over the Earth every year. A meteorite is a “space rock” or meteoroid that has traveled through our atmosphere and landed on the surface of the Earth.

The speed and force at which a meteoroid travels through the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in most of the rock burning off. Most meteoroids completely burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Of those that do survive, less than 5% of the original rock remains after impact with the ground. Meteorites on average, can range in size from dust grains to a small rock the size of a human fist.
How Many Meteorites Have Been Found?

To date, more than 69,000 meteorites have been found so far.
Where Have Meteorites Been Found?

Of the 69,268 recorded meteorites in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, 62.6% of meteorites have been retrieved from Antarctica.

Why are More Meteorites Recovered in Antarctica?

Antarctica leads the continents in the number of recovered meteorites for several reasons. One reason is not because more meteorites land in Antarctica. Statistically, meteorites can land anywhere on Earth. Most fall into the ocean due to the fact that the world’s oceans cover 70% of the world’s surface.

Meteorites also fall in other locations on Earth. Some have fallen in suburban and urban areas and damaged buildings. Others have left large indentations in the Earth’s surface known as impact craters. Others fall in remote areas of the world and leave no sign of their presence.

Meteorites in Antarctica are more visible because the environmental conditions are favorable for the preservation and retrieval of these space rocks. The arid and cold Antarctic environment helps to preserve these rocks.

The lack of rocks and the contract with ice makes spotting meteorites much easier.

A new space telescope JWST continues to take great data and pictures from the universe, Hubble still works but Musk Starlink satellites are blocking its photos
I think Europe and Japan might still do something, India said it would do some manned flight and Space is one of the few places where Russia and the USA still communicate and they plan to put an ISS type station around the Moon?

NASA launched a new big rocket but the public seems mostly uninspired. Space Launch System or SLS launched, Bush junior, the George W. Bush goal of Moon and Mars maybe the vision for the Moon and Mars was conceived as a response to the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, Obama and Trump added their own modification, some say it was originally like the Initiative was a 1989 a public policy by Bush senior, the George H. W. Bush administration.
It was not without critics.
Buzz Aldrin voiced criticism for NASA's vision and objectives, stating that the goal of sending astronauts back to the Moon was "more like reaching for past glory than striving for new triumphs".

We had an ongoing PirateNews gossip thread New NASA Rocket can't fly but that was a slightly different era, Shuttle derived Ares V formerly known as the Cargo Launch Vehicle or CaLV

in the mean time, all these visions for NASA a new guy Musk came along and his rockets started to work

NASA has a big rocket that finally works and I'm not sure why it does not inspire, maybe its the Moon, been there done that or maybe they lack talkers and leaders, JFK, von Braun showing off his Moon base and Mars base models.

China has passed Russia's tech by a lot, it is probably the only other nation / group that could one day do everything NASA can but Elon Musk has show another commercial way to grow the private industry.

They say Rockets might one day be 3-d printed and maybe Robotic people and AI will conquer before man

'Look out, Starship! China is Building a Massive Reusable Rocket!'

For years, China has been dropping hints about its Long March 9 (CZ-9) rocket, a three-stage super-heavy variant of the Long March family. This launch vehicle will reportedly be capable of transporting up to 150,000 kg (165 tons) to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and 54,000 kg (59.5 tons) to a trans-lunar injection. On March 2nd, the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) announced (via the Chinese social media platform Weixin) that it had finished building the first propellant tank for the CZ-9.
The news was accompanied by pictures that showed the finished tank and the many components that went into making it – and they are massive!

The Biden / Trump military wing called 'Space Force' now has a budget bigger than NASA's entire budget

Space Force Requests $30 Billion for FY2024, Embracing Resilient Architectures

DOD’s FY2024 budget request includes $30 billion for the U.S. Space Force, about $4 billion more than FY2023. The request supports the Space Force’s embrace of profilerated constellations of many small satellites in various low and medium orbits instead of a few large satellites in geostationary orbit that are easier for adversaries to target — what DOD officials call a “resilient architecture.”

NASA's budget was $24.04 billion for fiscal year (FY) 2022

China has carried out the first test of a Stirling Engine in space. NASA too is investigating Stirling Engines, which may be used to power deep space exploration or Lunar/Martian bases

https://phys.org/news/2023-04-china-stirling-orbit.html

Stirling engines aren't new tech. They were invented in Scotland in 1816.

A Stirling engine is a heat engine operating by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas, the "working fluid", at different temperature levels such that there is a net conversion of heat to mechanical work

Their big advantage is that they are among the most efficient engines, in some design approaching the maximum efficiency possible. The downside is that they are complex with many moving parts. NASA has been investigating them as part of a Radioisotope Power System. These use the heat generated by the radioactive decay of elements like plutonium.

It would be interesting to know what China is developing them for. The two likeliest possibilities are engines for deep space exploration or China's proposed Lunar Base.
