And how many fake Ukrainian ships have been shot down in this fake war so far?

I wasn't old enough to remember how the military and Media beefed up the numbers of dead Vietnamese soldiers by having guys like Second go right on ahead and murder women and children by a few hundred thousand, but they made a lot of movies about it after the fact.

An "invincible" Russian tank equipped with exploding armour and a smokescreen to defend against laser-guided missiles has been destroyed by Ukrainian forces, British intelligence has confirmed.

Russia debut its T-90M tank 'Breakthrough-3' in combat for the first time during its invasion of Ukraine but analysts are underwhelmed.

"At least one T-90M, Russia's most advanced tank, has been destroyed in fighting," the Ministry of Defence said. "The system’s upgraded armour, designed to counter anti-tank weaponry, remains vulnerable if unsupported by other force elements."

Russia has already suffered enormous losses on the battlefield, with many estimating the army has lost about 460 tanks alone.

Many have been destroyed by British-made Nlaw anti-tank missiles as well as armoured drones.

The loss of a T-90M heaps further embarrassment on the Kremlin, not least because each unit is reported to cost about £4 million.

With Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine stalling, the Kremlin has tried to inject more urgency and fight by deploying its most feared units and kit, including the T-90M which is considered to be the most technologically-advanced tank in the Russian army.

Analysts said that it had been held back until the end of April and had only been deployed in the Kremlin's push to capture the Donbas region.

The T-90M is an updated version of the T-90 and is kitted out with the latest Russian military equipment. Ukrainian soldiers have destroyed hundreds of Russian tanks with shoulder-mounted missiles, including NLAWs supplied by Britain, but the T-90M was supposed to be impregnable because of its exploding armour.

It also carries a self-deploying smokescreen that triggers if it detects that a laser beam has been fired at it, a net across its turret to deflect missiles and "slat armour" on its rear to defend against grenades.

The T-90M has a crew of three — a commander, a driver and a gunner — and is armed with a two machineguns and a main canon that can fire shells against enemy tanks and helicopters up to three miles away. It carries 43 shells and is designed to attack in a "hunter-killer" style.

"Approximately 100 T-90M tanks are currently in service amongst Russia's best equipped units, including those fighting in Ukraine," the Ministry of Defence said. "The conflict in Ukraine is taking a heavy toll on some of Russia’s most capable units and most advanced capabilities. It will take considerable time and expense for Russia to reconstitute its armed forces following this conflict."

Ukrainian media had reported that the T-90M tank had been destroyed on May 4 in a village in the Kharkiv region of northern Ukraine but the battlefield success had not been confirmed by Western intelligence until now.

In a video posted on the Telegram social media channel, a man inspects the burnt-out shell of a tank which appears to be the T-90M. It is unclear, though, how the tank was destroyed.

Ukraine has scored some major battlefield success since the war began on Feb. 24. Not only has it destroyed hundreds of Russian tanks, mainly deployed without infantry to defend their flanks, but last month it also hit the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet with its new Neptune surface-to-sea missiles. The Moskva was the largest battleship to sink in battle since the Second World War.

Downed Russian fighter jets are being found with basic GPS 'taped to the dashboards,' UK defense minister says

Russia is taping basic GPS systems to the dashboards of Su-34 fighter jets, the UK defense minister said.

Ben Wallace said this was due to "the poor quality" of Russia's own navigation systems.

Russia's military hardware, much of which is outdated, is being tested as the invasion drags on.

Wrecked Russian fighter jets are being found with rudimentary GPS receivers "taped to the dashboards" in Ukraine because their inbuilt navigation systems are so bad, the UK defense minister said.

Signym, do you believe Russians writing about Russia?

For Vladimir Putin, the sinister cult of victory is all that is left
by Kirill Martynov

Today, on Russia’s Victory Day, reimagined by Vladimir Putin as a showcase for his regime, the Guardian and other European outlets are publishing articles by the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which has suspended publication in Russia because of censorship over the Ukraine war

Vladimir Putin was born seven years after the end of the second world war, and raised on the Brezhnev-era myth of the great victory. A man of no great education, he loved to quote Soviet films and old stories. The history books portrayed the “great patriotic war” as a magical fable in which the hero – the Russian people – vanquishes a monster, to the envy of the whole world. In this myth there was no room for many of the actual facts of war, such as the Molotov–Ribbentrop pact, the war with Finland, the occupation of the Baltics. The myth ignores the deportation of millions of Poles. It glosses over the Rzhev campaign of the winter of 1942-43, in which the Soviet army sustained terrible losses, preferring to dwell on the storied victories of Moscow and Stalingrad.

The myth, celebrated today on Russia’s Victory Day, has become the essential narrative underpinning Putin’s plan to rule Russia eternally.

There came a point when Putin resolved to stay in power indefinitely. Elections would come and go, and he would lie that they would be his last, that he had no intention of changing Russia’s 1993-era constitution, which provides for a maximum of two consecutive terms. His first strategy for eternal rule was to allow citizens to become wealthy, as the country became richer than it had ever been in the second half of the 2000s. But when growth stopped, with much of the wealth captured in a few hands, he had to turn to propaganda. He began to invoke a sense of “traditional values” to augment the notion of his paramount importance to Russia – the indispensable leader who was the only defence for Russians against westernisation and dissolution in the sea of European peoples.

And Putin came to believe his own propaganda – that he now had a special historic mission to create a Greater Russia. Not quite a new USSR, because no one was about to rebuild Communism, or invent some new ideology or recolonise Central Asia so as to secure nice cheap labour for the Russian economy. Greater Russia fancied itself as the world’s third big power (along with the US and China). And if the rival US had the EU as its satellite then Greater Russia would need its own sphere of influence. Putin’s “traditional values” essentially boiled down to homophobia and the cult of military victory. It quickly became clear that persecuting gay people didn’t really amount to a durable strategy for the eternal rule of a strong leader. The cult of victory was all that was left.

The picture slowly took shape. The operetta of Russian militarism grew out of TV propaganda, where numerous “experts” began to speak of how we were the strongest in the world, no one could order us around, our rockets could circle the world several times and destroy anyone we wanted. It was ridiculous, but Putin’s speeches slowly began to sound more and more like those of the late neofascist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. He spoke less and less about dull things like economic development, but really lit up when talking about new “unparalleled” types of weapons. “We can do it again,” became the main slogan of Putin’s Russia, a clear reference to the fact that Russians defeated Nazism in the second world war, and believe they can do it again.

Putin has won four presidential elections, but a fifth is looming in 2024. Covid took a heavy toll in Russia and the economy has slumped, so Putin’s options are few. In his mind, his best way to hold on to power is a repeat of the great victory. A symbolic march-past on 9 May would not be enough; they’d need to fill the image with blood.

And so they tried to “do it again”, orchestrating Europe’s biggest tragedy since 1945. The war is the world’s first to have been directly invented by TV. It also feels like the moment when the Soviet Union truly fell apart, because Russia, as heir to that empire, cannot come through this crisis with all those Soviet myths about victory still intact. We shouldn’t be surprised that most Russians have bought into this and are indifferent to the military crimes being committed in Ukraine. It’s not just that they don’t get the full picture because of the obliteration of journalism and social media. It’s that if you stop believing the propaganda, then you no longer can believe in a Russia of traditional values, a victory-day hero nation. All that is left is a wild person wandering through the ruins of a militarised kleptocracy, carrying a nuclear suitcase in his hand. And who wants to believe in that?

Who are we, and how did we let this happen? It’s scary to answer this question. Russians will hold on to their myths until the very last. In the meantime, they have their military parade, their victory day swoon, the opiate of the masses.

One of these days you'll have to bring some "evidence" for the "truth" of your "facts" about Russia, Signym. The Duran's bloviating doesn't count.

In the meantime, maybe Ukraine will kill enough Russian soldiers to defeat Putin. It only took 58,220 dead Americans to defeat Eisenhower/Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon/Ford in Vietnam. Putin might be getting close to his magic number that signals defeat in Ukraine. I hope it doesn't take 27,000,000 dead that signaled Stalin's "victory". Who knows how high the number of dead needed to get before Stalin would admit he lost? Maybe as little as 1 but only if the one was Stalin. Or one dead Putin.

As many as 27 million Soviets lost their lives, with as many as 11.4 million military deaths joined by up to 10 million civilian deaths due to military activity and an additional 8 million to 9 million deaths due to famine and disease.

First, since information is usually secondhand, I consider the source.

Sources which have a history of lying persistently, repeatedly, and blatantly go pretty far down the list. That's why I shitcan M$N, NGOs, Kiev's, SECOND's and THUGR's info almost immediately... bc they've lied too often in the past..

I apply "qui bono". A source which has to admit negative news is more trustworthy.

Along the same lines: follow the money. Who is getting paid by whom.

Apply logic. Sources that say one thing one day, and contradict the next day (or the next post) are not trustworthy. Same with a post or publication that contains internal contradictions.

Sources that use one-sided arguments (i.e. that are applied only to some people, parties, events, or nations) or that attempt to use strong emotions, that mix editirialization in with news, or sources that simply attack others are not reliable.

Look at news selection and timing. Out of the tens of thousands of news items that could be published, why these, and why now? Why do some stories disappear? And why do they all use the same words and phrases and get on the same bandwagon?

Is what someone is claiming even POSSIBLE in the real world? (That takes some knowledge of science and history, and some real-world experience.)

As in science, data that can be seen from all sides is more reliable.

****

Just, for fucks sake, use common sense when parsing info. If at all possible.

Your loss of $4.79 per gallon of gasoline is somebody's gain. That somebody is the CEO of the oil company refining your gasoline, not Biden. Take your complaint to the CEO, not to the voting booth, although the vote would work if you could get your Republican Senator to stomp the hell of the CEO, but that is not gonna happen because the Republican and the CEO are friends. A Democratic Senator would be pleased to stomp the CEO for you and get prices lowered. The Senate needs at least 62 Democratic Senators for the stomping to begin. Because of the filibuster, the number is theoretically only 60 Democratic Senators, but Senators Manchin of W. Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona are CEO friendly Democrats.

For a while, Solar Winds was popularly blamed on China. The reality is, nobody knows who hacked Solar Winds. But let me throw another hat into the ring- another nation with a long and extremely capable history of building and using (and selling) hacking tools: Israel, including hacking into Iran's nuclear processing centrifuges and destroying them. No mean feat, since the center wasn't connected to the inet and the hack required detailed knowledge of the exact Sieman's drivers for the centrifuges.

AFA the power grid is concerned, why go thru all of the trouble to take control of a power grid and then NOT USE IT? The longer the malware sits there, the more likely it is to be discovered. This began around 2015, when Russia really could have used leverage against the USA. Maybe this was just a false flag, planted by the NSA so they could blame Russia at will? Anyway, it makes no sense to plant malware that gives you ultimate controland justlet it sit there.

You really don't understand how malware works, and you definitely don't understand how fcked Putin is. I guess it's good the Russian people can endure almost endless deprivation? Hard to see that as a consolation, but go ahead.

Nation's Power System Reveals Cyber Attacks on Hundreds of Small Contractors
Source: WSJ - Rebecca Smith and Rob Barry
Posted on January 11, 2019

The cyberattack on the 15-person company near Salem, Ore., which works with utilities and government agencies, was an early thrust in the worst known hack by a foreign government into the nation’s electric grid. It set off so many alarms that U.S. officials took the unusual step in early 2018 of publicly blaming the Russian government.

A reconstruction of the hack reveals a glaring vulnerability at the heart of the country’s electric system. Rather than strike the utilities head on, the hackers went after the system’s unprotected underbelly—hundreds of contractors and subcontractors like All-Ways who had no reason to be on high alert against foreign agents. From these tiny footholds, the hackers worked their way up the supply chain. Some experts believe two dozen or more utilities ultimately were breached.

The scheme’s success came less from its technical prowess—though the attackers did use some clever tactics—than in how it exploited trusted business relationships using impersonation and trickery.

The hackers planted malware on sites of online publications frequently read by utility engineers. They sent out fake résumés with tainted attachments, pretending to be job seekers. Once they had computer-network credentials, they slipped through hidden portals used by utility technicians, in some cases getting into computer systems that monitor and control electricity flows.

The Wall Street Journal pieced together this account of how the attack unfolded through documents, computer records and interviews with people at the affected companies, current and former government officials and security-industry investigators.

The U.S. government hasn’t named the utilities or other companies that were targeted. The Journal identified small businesses such as Commercial Contractors Inc., in Ridgefield, Wash., and Carlson Testing Inc., in Tigard, Ore., along with big utilities such as the federally owned Bonneville Power Administration and Berkshire Hathaway’s PacifiCorp. Two of the energy companies targeted build systems that supply emergency power to Army bases.

The Russian campaign triggered an effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security to retrace the steps of the attackers and notify possible victims. Some companies were unaware they had been compromised until government investigators came calling, and others didn’t know they had been targeted until contacted by the Journal.

“What Russia has done is prepare the battlefield without pulling the trigger,” says Robert P. Silvers, former assistant secretary for cyber policy at Homeland Security and now a law partner at Paul Hastings LLP.

The press office at the Russian Embassy in Washington didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment. Russia has previously denied targeting critical infrastructure.

In the summer of 2016, U.S. intelligence officials saw signs of a campaign to hack American utilities, says Jeanette Manfra, assistant secretary of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity and communications program. The tools and tactics suggested the perpetrators were Russian. Intelligence agencies notified Homeland Security, Ms. Manfra says.

Uh huh.

US officials also claimed that Trump was peed on in a Moscow hotel, which made him Putin's slave, even there was no evidence behind it, and it turned out to be a complete fabrication.

US officials also claimed that DNC server files were hacked from abroad, altho examination of the metadata (fast transfer rate, timestamps all ending in even numbers) clearly indicates that it was xfeted locally to a USB stick.

US officials blame a lot of people for a lot of things without any credible evidence whatsoever.

*****

By the end of this year, Russia will have acquired a large portion of Ukraine and our economy will be on the ropes (and the EU even worse), all of your bullshit, rah-rah-ism and propaganda notwithstanding. Or we (most of the planet) will be a great smoking ruin. And we can thank the neocons for that. That's my prediction, anyway

Yup. And those same US Officials are trying to control what is information and what is disinformation.

Meanwhile, the idiots on the Left cheer this on because they're hearing what they want to hear.

No doubting what their opinion will be on this when the pendulum swings far enough the other way and the Trump Administration has control over what is information and disinformation in 2024.

My advice to anybody who gives a shit about freedom on either side would to be loud about dismantling that agency before it ever really gets a chance to take off.

Unlike the hypocrites on the Left, I wouldn't want Trump to have control of that any more than Ted would.

How Politics Poisoned the Evangelical Church. (1)

Riveting.

Now some Evangelicals are converting to Putin’s church. (2)

That’s something I learned reading in Tuesday’s issue of Heather Cox Richardson’s always excellent newsletter. (3)

2. https://www.npr.org/2022/05/10/1096741988/orthodox-christian-churches-
are-drawing-in-far-right-american-converts

Why had a group of conservative American Christians converted to Russian Orthodoxy? These converts had grown disillusioned with social and demographic change in the United States.

3. https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/may-10-2022?s=r
. . . insistence that “we truly are losing our country to the radical left.” But the argument is not only racial and economic. American evangelicals are converting to the Russian Orthodox Church out of support for its nativism, white nationalism, rejection of LGBTQ rights and abortion, and support for authoritarian Russian president Vladimir Putin. Like him, they object to the diversity inherent in democracy.

The battlefield facts are that Ukraine is winning the war. A brutal and incompetent Russian military has suffered terrible losses; its reserves consist largely of untrained men who would draw on stocks of weapons and ammunition that have been badly maintained or rotted out by corruption. Its generals have proved unable to orchestrate a campaign to gain air superiority or launch concentrated thrusts into Ukrainian territory. And it has acted with unspeakable barbarity in the matters of pillage, deportation, rape, and murder — activities that carry with them the curse of indiscipline as well as criminality.

The Ukrainians are less outnumbered than one might think — they may very well, for example, have more tanks in the theater than the Russians do, in part because of captures. In theory, drawing as they can on a population of 40 million, they can put large armies in the field. Unlike the Russians, they have weapons not likely to be disrupted by sanctions or sheer inefficiency. They also have far more extensive methods for collecting and analyzing intelligence than the Russians enjoy. Their combat motivation is unquestionably higher, and they have shown far greater ingenuity and combat skill than a Russian army that still relies on vast volumes of artillery fire, laying down devastation through which indifferently trained and maintained tanks and infantry-fighting vehicles advance.

As the Ukrainians accumulate more battlefield successes, they will raise their sights. The Russian army, having suffered tens of thousands of casualties and lost much of its frontline equipment, is making what might be its final, convulsive efforts at destroying Ukrainian forces in the south and east of that country. Like their previous efforts, these too will probably fail, and the possibility will open up of Russian routs along their 300-mile-long front line.

The withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kharkiv Oblast is a tacit recognition of Russia’s inability to capture key Ukrainian cities where they expected limited resistance from the population.

The Ministry says the withdrawn forces "will likely deploy to the eastern bank of the Siverskyi Donets River, forming a blocking force to protect the western flank of Russia’s main force concentration and main supply routes for operations in the vicinity of Izyum."

Security footage shows Russian troops shooting 2 Ukrainian civilians in the back

In additional video footage, the Russian troops can be seen inside the building, shooting into rooms and looking through cupboards. One of the Russians can be seen helping himself to a drink in one of the offices — unaware that he's being filmed until another notices the camera and hits it with the butt of his rifle.

In CCTV video obtained by the BBC, a group of Russian soldiers can be seen approaching the gate of a building along a Kyiv highway. An unarmed Ukrainian security guard, identified by BBC reporter Sarah Rainsford as Leonid Pliats, then approaches the gate, apparently striking up a conversation with the Russians and smoking cigarettes together.

The video shows Russian troops then leaving the area, only for two of them to suddenly turn back and approach the gate again while raising their guns. BBC producer Tony Brown reported that the troops then shot Pliats and his boss "in their backs."

The BBC reported that Pliats' boss was immediately killed in the shooting, but Pliats was able to limp back to an office to hide and call for help.

Two Ukrainian volunteer firefighters eventually arrived and tried to save Pliats, but he died from his wounds, the BBC reported. The firefighters, identified as Sasha and Kostya, told the BBC that they had to wait out the Russians before they could reach Pliats.

Pliats daughter, Yulia Androshchuk, told the BBC that her father "was not a military man at all. They killed a 65-year-old. What for?" she said. "I'm not so much furious as full of grief - and fear. These damn Russians are so out of control, I'm afraid of what they might do next."
