International Attitudes Toward the U.S., NATO and Russia in a Time of Crisis
Most say U.S. is reliable partner, and ratings for Biden are mostly positive – although down significantly from last year

Ratings for Russia, which were already negative in most of the nations surveyed, have plummeted further following the invasion. In 10 countries, 10% or less of those polled express a favorable opinion of Russia. Positive views of Russian President Vladimir Putin are in single digits in more than half of the nations polled.

Ratings for U.S. President Joe Biden have slipped since 2021, with confidence in the American leader dropping significantly in 13 countries, including declines of 20 percentage points or more in Italy, Greece, Spain, Singapore and France. Despite these shifts, attitudes toward Biden remain mostly positive, with a median of 60% across the nations polled expressing confidence in him to do the right thing in world affairs. Biden gets his highest marks in Poland (82% confidence) and his lowest in Greece (41%).

'Twelve of Putin's officers killed' in Ukrainian strike on Russia

Twelve Russian officers are thought to have been killed in a single rocket strike as Ukraine's armed forces inflict punishing losses with American-supplied weapons. The attack targeted a command post in at Chornobaivka Airport, near the occupied southern city of Kherson, and is rumored to have killed at least one general and one colonel. It is thought to have been carried out using US HIMARS rockets.

Putin Thinks He’s Winning

by Tatiana Stanovaya. Ms. Stanovaya is a nonresident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She writes about Russian domestic politics and foreign policy.

Everything is going according to plan.

That’s the line from President Vladimir Putin. The war in Ukraine, in its fifth month and with no end in sight, may be grueling. But senior Kremlin officials keep repeating that Russia, gaining the upper hand in Ukraine’s east, will achieve all its goals.

In one to two years, by which point the Kremlin expects Ukraine to be exhausted by the war, unable to function normally and profoundly demoralized, the conditions for capitulation will ripen. At that stage, the Kremlin’s calculation appears to be, the elite will split and an opposition seeking to end the war will coalesce to oust the Zelensky administration. There’d be no need for Russia to capture Kyiv militarily; it would fall of its own accord. Mr. Putin apparently sees nothing that could prevent it.

Mr. Putin’s strategic goal in the war against Ukraine, and the most geopolitically important of them all: building a new world order.

We are used to thinking that Mr. Putin sees the West as a hostile force that aims to destroy Russia. But I believe that for Mr. Putin there are two Wests: a bad one and a good one. The “bad West” is represented by the traditional political elites that currently rule Western countries: Mr. Putin appears to view them as narrow-minded slaves of the electoral cycle who overlook genuine national interests and are incapable of strategic thinking. The “good West” consists of ordinary Europeans and Americans who, he believes, want to have normal relations with Russia, and businesses who are eager to profit from close cooperation with their Russian counterparts.

In Mr. Putin’s thinking, apparently, the bad West is declining and doomed while the good West is slowly challenging the status quo with a raft of nationally oriented leaders, such as Viktor Orban in Hungary, Marine Le Pen in France and even Donald Trump in the United States, ready to break with the old order and fashion a new one. Mr. Putin believes that the war against Ukraine and all its consequences, such as high inflation and soaring energy prices, will nourish the good West and help people rise up against the traditional political establishment.

Mr. Putin’s wager appears to be that the fundamental political shifts in Western countries will in time bring about a transformed, friendly West. Russia will then be able to return to all the security demands it set out in its December ultimatum to the United States and NATO. This may seem wishful to the point of impossible. But that doesn’t stop it from being what Mr. Putin expects to happen. Putin’s ultimatum is described at https://en.desk-russie.eu/2021/12/30/what-does-the-russian-ultimatum.h
tml

There is some good news. The very fact that the plan seems realistic to him should, in the short term, prevent any nuclear escalation. But the bad news is that sooner or later, Mr. Putin will face reality. It is in that moment, when his plans are stymied and his disappointment high, that he is likely to be most dangerous.

For the West avoid a catastrophic clash, it needs to truly understand what it’s really dealing with when it comes to Mr. Putin.

Killing a few hundred Russians per day will not change Putin's goals. Quoting Stalin: a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic. 28 million Russians died in the Great Patriotic War, so I am sure Putin will easily tolerate hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers in the next two years in order to reach his ultimate goal. What goal?

Before Russia will end the war in Ukraine, it has made a large number of demands it wants the EU, UK, USA, and NATO to satisfy. If Russia is not satisfied, it has made specific threats against the EU, UK, USA, and NATO.

https://en.desk-russie.eu/2021/12/30/what-does-the-russian-ultimatum.h
tml

An article in the digital newspaper Svpressa eloquently titled “Putin’s ultimatum: Russia, if you will, will bury all of Europe and two-thirds of the United States in 30 minutes” dots the i’s: “The Kremlin will have to prove its position with deeds. It is probably only possible to force the “partners” (EU, UK, USA, and NATO) to sit at the negotiating table by coercion. Economically, the Russian Federation cannot compete with the West. There remains war.” Military expert Konstantin Sivkov believes that “to bring the United States and NATO to the negotiating table, some kind of super weapon is needed. For the moment, Russia does not show this potential to its adversaries. But it exists. Russia has the capability to use superpowered munitions with a capacity of up to 100 megatons. […] We must repeat that we are not interested in a world without Russia, as Putin once said, and demonstrate our determination to strike if NATO expands. After that, I can assure you that they [the West] will be afraid. Nothing else can stop them. […] It is naive to rely on diplomatic procedures. […] Russia’s move is a signal that already radical measures are going to be taken. You refused, so you will have yourselves to blame…”

What is at stake?

Reading the Western press, one is under the impression that nothing is happening. Westerners do not seem to understand what is at stake. They think that only the fate of Ukraine is being decided, which is of less concern to them than that of Armenia, judging by the pilgrimages of our presidential candidates. Many French officials find it normal that Russia should claim a sphere of influence. They resemble those who in 1939 believed that Hitler’s demands would be limited to Danzig. However, one only has to look at the texts proposed by Moscow to understand that the stakes are quite different.

The Russian ultimatum demands that “the following be legally established: the renunciation of any enlargement of NATO [to the east], the cessation of military cooperation with post-Soviet countries, the withdrawal of American nuclear weapons from Europe and the withdrawal of NATO armed forces to the borders of 1997”. Russia and the United States commit themselves not to deploy nuclear weapons abroad and to withdraw those already deployed, as well as to eliminate nuclear weapons deployment infrastructure outside their territory. Article 4 states, in part, that “the Russian Federation and all participants which were, as of 27 May 1997, member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, shall not deploy their armed forces and armaments on the territory of any other European state in addition to the forces stationed on that territory as of 27 May 1997.” And Article 7 specifies that “the participants, which are Member States of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, shall refrain from conducting any military activities on the territory of Ukraine, as well as of the other States of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.”

This includes the fourteen Eastern European and Balkan states that have become members of NATO in the last twenty-four years: “Thus, in addition to the post-Soviet space, the Moscow initiative includes a wide range of countries located between Western Europe and Russia — mainly Poland and the Baltic States, which are targeted because additional forces of the North Atlantic Alliance have been deployed there as decided at the NATO summit in Warsaw in 2016.” In short, “the Russian initiative could help the Americans to quietly leave Central and Eastern Europe,” according to the headline of an article posted by the very official think tank Russtrat. But it is not only that: “the link established between the concept of ‘fundamental security interests’ (which is introduced for the first time) and the range of missiles obliges the United States to refrain from entering our seas (mainly the Black Sea, but also those of the north: the Baltic, Barents, Okhotsk), and to stop the flights of American bombers (taking into account the real range of ‘Tomahawks’ of about 1800 km), practically over the whole of Europe and most of Asia. The same is true of Japan, for which acceptance of the Treaty clauses means the de-occupation and liquidation of American bases…”

Russia Says It’s Losing Because Ukraine Has Experimental Mutant Troops Created in Secret Biolabs

Nearly five months into its senseless war against Ukraine, Russia has concocted a wild new explanation for why the Kremlin’s plans for a quick takeover fell apart so spectacularly—because Ukrainian troops were turned into superhuman killing machines during “secret experiments” in American-run biolabs, of course.

Konstantin Kosachev, the deputy speaker of Russia’s Federation Council, and Irina Yarovaya, deputy chair of the State Duma, touted what they described as bombshell findings from the “investigation.”

Testing of Ukrainian POWs’ blood, they claimed, uncovered “a range of diseases” that suggest they were secretly experimented on “for military purposes.”

“And we see: the cruelty and barbarity with which the military personnel of Ukraine behave, the crimes that they commit against the civilian population, those monstrous crimes that they commit against prisoners of war, confirm that this system for the control and creation of a cruel murder machine was implemented under the management of the United States,” Yarovaya was quoted telling reporters.

“And those performance enhancing drugs that they are still given in order to completely neutralize the last traces of human consciousness and turn them into the most cruel and deadly monsters also confirm this,” she claimed.

Bizarrely, she also claimed that the presence of Hepatitis A antibodies in Ukrainian prisoners’ blood was proof of an American biolabs conspiracy, since a former health minister for Ukraine was a dual Ukrainian-American citizen who had worked to acquire drugs for the treatment of hepatitis in the country.

“It is quite possible that this was about testing these drugs on military personnel,” Yarovaya said.

The claims appeared to be a new take on the biolabs conspiracy theory that Russia’s Defense Ministry has routinely rolled out to try and justify the war.

While the conspiracy theory dates all the way back to the Soviet Union, it has been amplified more frequently by Kremlin figures after the Feb. 24 invasion . . .

If Democrats were limited to doing one thing, I'd have Biden ordering the IRS to collect Trump's unpaid taxes. The IRS, as far as anybody knows, has one part-time, junior IRS auditor who graduated from a 2-year junior college with a degree in bookkeeping looking at Trump's taxes, but that auditor is stymied by a dozen Trump-paid tax lawyers, each with decades of experience in tax evasion. Trump will never pay his taxes voluntarily. The IRS will never overcome the delays from Trump's lawyers. Biden will never pressure the IRS to finish Trump's audit and send Trump the bill. All those "nevers" need to be changed to "it is happening immediately", not at some unspecified time in the far future.

Yeah. We know you would because you're a psychopath and you're obsessed with Trump.

Of course if YOU were the one to decide the single thing that Democrats could do from now until the Democratic Party dies in November, you'd pick something that wouldn't keep the Democratic Party from dying.

Unfortunately, there are some topics our establishment media - and that includes "5 eyes" and German media, since they're locked into ours- lies about RELIABLY:

American foreign policy, especially now about Russia but about... anybody, really: Iraq, China, Venezuela, Iran ... the fickle finger of fate decides!

American domestic political movements: "white supremacy" being the biggest threat since global terrorism, Antifa/BLM/CRT, LGBTQX+/gender identity etc.

Also, opinion polls.

Non-establishment politicians of any party or any figure that rises up in the news, if they become influential: Bernie Sanders, Rand Paul, Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump. Kyle Rittenhouse. Nick Sandmann.

Any crisis- real, imagined, or exaggerated - that can drive centralized authoritarianism and/ or allow the DOJ to politically persecute: collusion! terrorism! Gun violence! Covid! The heat death of the planet! Russia!

Our economy, which they constantly conflate with financialism (stock market, real estate) and speculation (commodities, cryptocurrencies, forex) and diddle the numbers (inflation, unemployment).

Non-establishment media: anything anybody tweets, posts on FB or YT that doesn't get the blue (DNC) checkmark of "truthiness"

That doesn't leave much, does it? But when I think about HOW MUCH of the "news" I have to quarantine/shitcan until it's verified, it's an indication of how smothering and all-encompassing the "official narrative"/propaganda has become. It's hard not to get your brain infested with fake news when it's all around you.

Hmmm... well, at least they get the "man bites dog" local stories correct. Usually.

Give a few examples of "verified" news about the Ukraine war. Who does verification good enough for Signym?

I do the verification, SHITCAN.

I broaden my sources and bang different reports together. I read/listen outside of the bubble.

Sometimes, given enough time, they even say the same thing. (Like "Putin entirely too healthy", or- eventually, the position of the frontline in Ukraine.)

I READ CAREFULLY. For example, Russians are NOT accused of "shooting down" MH17.

I LOOK FOR EVIDENCE. That DOESN'T mean gossip or allegations, it means verifiable fact, like file metadata, written documents, etc

I PAY ATTENTION TO WHO HAS LIED ABOUT WHAT IN THE PAST.

I parse for cui bono.

I look for patterns ... when does a "news item" become part of a daily drumbeat? When does it disappear? I look for "moving goalposts" or efforts to change the narrative or memory-hole a topic.

I look for efforts to play on emotion: Name-calling. Shocking allegtions. Dehumanization. Demonization. Fear-mongering.

Whenever some claims that "someone" is trying to do "something" I ask "HOW?". Because, in the real world, there will always be a trail of HOW. That's why I knew that Jan 6 wasn't an attempted coup or even an insurrection: There as no plan by which it could have come about, no assembled people, no asembled materiel. That's how I knew Iraq didn't have WMD. That's how I knew that Trump wasn't "colluding" with Russia: There was no "How are they doing that"?

I look beyond out-of-context snippets. I watched an entire 2 hours of a videotape of the Covington students waiting for their bus. It was crystal clear that the "respected Native Elder" waded into the students, confrontationally. Not the other way around.

I check to see if it contradicts itself, or if it makes sense. (For example, does it makes sense to say that Russia lost as many, or more, soldiers in Ukraine than Kiev did? No, it doesn't.)

I compare it to basics: where is the energy (I mean energy as in physics, not emotional agitation) flowing? Who is producing what? I talk to friends who do the same thing, more insightfully.

NOT YOU, OF COURSE.
You post topics that contradict each other, sometimes one right after another. When you get your ass handed to you on one topic, you trail a red herring across it. You name-call. You splatter the board with anything you can find, whether it makes sense or not. You insinuate devious motives in others. You try and associate a person (Trump, Putin.me) with irrelevant others (Confederate generals, Hitler, Stalin, Putin etc)

If somone REALLY gets under your skin, you threaten them in a backhand way, or wish them ill.

Shit, son, you have SUCH an extensive history of lying I don't even read thru your posts anymore. They're 99.9% hate-driven pointless garbage.

It's clear you hate Americans and you hate anyone who loves America.

Nobody could be THIS obtuse, SECOND, unless they wre being stupid on purpose or unless they were really REALLY moronic.
So, which is it?
Moronic?
Or lying?

NOBODY. I have posted so many times in so many ways I don't trust ANY news source. UNLIKE YOU, I don't turn my judgment over to some clearly biased party with an agenda. And, they ALL have n agenda.

But SOME news sources have proven so mendacious, so far off the mark from reality, I barely look at them. And then, usually only to inform myself what they're lying about THIS time.

That's how I view your posts, and THUGR's, and CAPON's. Why go to the M$M when I can get a distillation of all the warped thinking, rationalizations, lies, jingoism, authoritarianism, fascism, paranoia, and fear-mongering right here?

There you go again, Signym, praising yourself rather than giving examples of Ukraine stories you trust.

Signym, test your methods on a story from today:

Russia Hits Ukraine's Black Sea Port Despite Grain Deal

Russian missiles have struck Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa just hours after Moscow and Kyiv signed deals to allow grain exports to resume from there.

https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2022-07-23/russia-ukraine-t
rade-missile-strikes-on-wars-150th-day

Tell me, Signym, which part of the story is true, which false?

1) True or false: Russian missiles struck Odessa

2) True or false: Russia signed a deal to allow grain exports from there.

3) True or false: This is a tricky question. Is Russia's behavior inconsistent with signing a deal? If 1) or 2) are false in your mind, Signym, then it not tricky at all, but if 1) and 2) are both true, then a tricky lawyer could argue that 3) is still false.

Personally I think all three are true. What is your version of the story, Signym, after you use your unique mental powers on it?

I DON'T TRUST UKRAINE STORIES.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO POST THAT?

Russia wants to look like it's winning. It wants it's people on side (as the Brits say.)

Ukraine wants to look like it's winning. It wants to keep the EU, NATO, and the USA on side. All of that money! Somebody in Ukraine is getting rich!

The USA wants to paint Russia as both dangerously evil and, at the same time, clownishly incompetent. Seems like a recipe for cognitive dissonance, but brainwashed people don't suffer from that bc you need some cognition for that dissonance.

As a result, what I have found is that Russia admits losses slowly, if at all. But if they say they've done something, they're usually truthful bc eventually Ukraine and the west have to admit the front line has moved, or that Ukraine is suffering heavy losses.

Kiev? Tells BIG FAT JUICY WHOPPERS that are eventually discredited. The Ghost of Kiev. The brave soldiers of Snakes Island. Mass rapes by Russian soldiers. Offensives that are going to happen, any day now! "Million man army". It's gotten to the point I shitcan anything coming out of Kiev.

The USA has its muddled message. We're supporting democracy in Ukraine! No, weren't weakening Russia to cause regime change! Russia is a clusterfuck! But it's so powerful it has caused both the global food crisis AND the energy crisis! And if course the whoopers: Putin is dying. Shoigu had a heart attack. Gerasimov has been fired. Russia is running out of missiles. The stuff that doesn't cancel itself often belongs in the shitcan, too. WHY the neocons have such a hardon for Russia, I don't know. It's as bad as JO753"s paranoia that Russia might do "something" "somehow", altho he can't say what, or how.

What I get out of the welter of propaganda sloshing around is that Russia's actions are explained by security issues, and America's actions are explained by aggression.

When the neocons tried to topple Syria, Russia sent ships from Sebastopol athwart the Syrian coast. A lightbulb went on in the neocons' heads Oh yeah! Sebastopol'. After that, they made it their mission to acquire Russia's only warm water naval base.

The neocons have also had this fixation about creating a cordon sanitaire, and eventually breaking up Russia for a resource grab. So NATO expanded inexorably east, and NATO missiles went into Poland and Romania, and it looked like Ukraine might be next

Go back to Putin's Security Council speech of 2007. I think you'll find it all there.

All of the rest is just window-dressing, IMHO .
