Rail companies have been cutting costs for years. The lines are in terrible shape. Maintenance is non-existent

Did you know that the switches and lines STILL haven't been repaired after Superstorm Sandy, causing all trains to go slow? And that was in 2012!

BTW the cause of this particular derailment was bad wheel bearings. There is a video online... I'll see if I can find it... of the undercarriage of one of the railcars literally on fire at least 20 miles before the derailment.

So it wasn't the rail bed, it was a specific rail car. If at some point all or most if the bearings seize, I can imagine that car jumping the tracks and causing a huge pileup behind it.
